A Shannon Creche has poured cold water on new state proposals to lower childcare costs for struggling parents. It comes as the Department of Children has unveiled new plans to provide 800 new childcare spaces, by purchasing buildings in rural and disadvantaged areas that can be ran on a not for profit basis. New figures from the Federation of Early Childhood Providers show almost 1,000 childcare facilities have closed in the last six years. Co-Owner of Kidz Haven in Shannon Noel Mulderrig has been telling Clare FM's Daragh Dolan that this trend is likely to continue.

On the Cross, He was being executed as a criminal in full view of hundreds of people.The Creche and the Cross are the two defining moments of Our Lord's life; they are the two symbols that He chose to represent His life.We know that Our Lord chose the life that He would live, we know that He lived the most perfect life, and we know that His life is the model for our lives.This is why being a Catholic and living a Catholic life is always a great challenge, in every age. It is difficult to imitate Our Lord, because it is difficult to embrace poverty, humiliation and suffering.This is why Our Lord's life has always been a scandal to the world. One of the many reasons why the world has always rejected Our Lord is that it does not want to be called to the excellence of Our Lord's life. It finds His life far too demanding, far too difficult.As such, the world has always defined for its followers a different path. In place of poverty and humility, the world presents another “virtue” for everyone to practice. It is the “virtue” of mediocrity.

We began this week by exploring the chaos which had been unleased in Tuam, as nearly 100 families have been impacted by the foreclosure of the Happily Ever After creche.  The childcare facility cannot continue to function as the owner's, Tuam Parish, have been hit with a bill of over 1 million euro if they decide to proceed with renovations of the building.  A lot of families have been left in the lurch, and do not know where to turn as there are no places available in any of the crèches in the Tuam hinterland or further afield.  It's may result in job losses and hard decisions for families who are scrambling to find alternative arrangements with family or further afield.  I went out to Tuam last Saturday and spoke to a number of the families affected by this, as well as the Minister locally, Seán Canney. What is pyschosis and is there stigma surrounding the condition? We explored this subject in an open and honest way with Renmore man Conor Gavin. "You're not a psychopath, you just experienced an episode of pyschosis"  At just 16, Conor experienced his first psychotic episode and now, he's the Co-Ordinator of Ireland's new Psychosis Research Centre and founder of the Psychosis Arts Collective.  Drawing on his lived experience, he is using his voice to drive change, challenge stigma, and show that recovery from psychosis is possible. He spoke to Galway Talks about the advice the psychiatrist gave him after his first episode.   It was a big week in the presidential election campaign as polling approaches on the 24th of October.  Both candidates were on the programme with us this week.  We started by interviewing independent candidate Catherine Connolly, discussing a number of issues from the campaign and some of key local issues here in Galway, including the likes of the mother and baby homes scandal the ring road in Galway and a question from one of our T.Y media week students.  We also spoke to the Fine Gael candidate and former minister, Heather Humphreys, asking questions on repeating the seal on the Commission of Investigation into Mother and Baby Homes, her offices and more.  Make sure to exercise your democratic rights and get to the polling booth on Friday next. Timestamps: (6:40) - Creche update / Listener of the week (11:23) - Patty Wu-Murad Update (14:46) - Grace Millane British woman Grace Millane (21) had the world at her feet.   She had just graduated university and was taking a year off to travel the world.   After spending weeks in South America, Grace arrived in New Zealand in November 2018.  She enjoyed meeting the locals and making new friends. In late November 2018, Grace matched on Tinder with a man named Jesse Kempson and the two decided to meet up.  They enjoyed visiting some bars and restaurants in Auckland.  The two hit it off and Grace decided to return to Jesse's place for the night.   She was last seen getting out of an elevator in his apartment complex and was never seen again.  Jesse murdered Grace that night.  Over the coming hours, Jesse made internet searches including "rigor mortis", "extra large bags" and "carpet cleaner".  He also went on another Tinder date that had been previously planned, while Grace's body was in his room. Jesse would end up confessing to Grace's murder and has been sentenced to life in prison with a minimum non-parole period of 17 years. Warning: this episode refers to child sex abuse and is intended for a mature audience only. The Christchurch Civic Creche child sex abuse scandal rocked the South Island city in the early 90s - and went on to become one of the most significant legal battles in New Zealand's history. Childcare worker Peter Ellis was accused of bizarre and horrifying offences of satanic rituals, torture and sacrifice against preschoolers while he worked at the creche. He was eventually convicted on 16 charges of sexually abusing pre-schoolers and jailed for 10 years. In 2022 - after numerous failed appeals - the Supreme Court quashed Ellis' convictions, saying the police investigation and his trial were significantly flawed. Sadly, Ellis died before the landmark decision. In this episode of A Moment In Crime host Anna Leask goes back to 1991 when Ellis was first accused of child abuse - and tells his story from there. You will also one of the last interviews Ellis ever gave before he died, as well as one of the child complainants who maintains she was abused by her former creche teacher. The presentation also covered the launch of an RRDF application to support the reopening of Crusheen Railway Station, and the development of a Community Hub and Creche.
