Only one performance style has dominated the lexicon of the casual moviegoer: “Method acting.” The first reception-based analysis of film acting, Imagining the Method: Reception, Identity, and American Screen Performance (U Texas Press, 2024) investigates how popular understandings of the so-called Method—what its author Justin Rawlins calls "methodness"—created an exclusive brand for white, male actors while associating such actors with rebellion and marginalization. Drawing on extensive archival research, the book maps the forces giving shape to methodness and policing its boundaries. Imagining the Method traces the primordial conditions under which the Method was conceived. It explores John Garfield's tenuous relationship with methodness due to his identity. It considers the links between John Wayne's reliance on "anti-Method" stardom and Marlon Brando and James Dean's ascribed embodiment of Method features. It dissects contemporary emphases on transformation and considers the implications of methodness in the encoding of AI performers. Altogether, Justin Rawlins offers a revisionist history of the Method that shines a light on the cultural politics of methodness and the still-dominant assumptions about race, gender, and screen actors and acting that inform how we talk about performance and performers. The McDowell Sonoran Preserve, one-third of Scottsdale's land mass, is one of the most beautiful, ecological diverse deserts on the planet. It also is a global research living lab. About: Rotator is a drone project based around combinations of delay, reverb, resonance and feedback. I've had a long-running fascination with taking simple sound sources - analog oscillators, tuned percussion, plucked strings - passing them through combinations of effects - filters, resonators, delays, reverb - then taking those altered sounds and mixing them back in with themselves. This feedback loop keeps the rhythmic, melodic and harmonic content of the input but adds its own musicality to the output. It continually builds on and modifies the original so the final result is something new and hopefully more than just the sum of its own parts. I don't have a clear set of musical influences for this - it's as much about my love of the saturated sounds of tape delays from Jamaican Dub originators like King Tubby as it is about the concepts behind Emptyset's location-based works or any of the more obvious drone, ambient and electronica references. None of these ideas or techniques are new - but I hope my interpretation and implementation of them brings something worthwhile. This piece was originally recorded live using a small modular rig and is based around the individual outputs of a single analogue oscillator. The recording has had some basic post-production but it's essentially presented as it was performed. - Justin Owen aka Rotator Links: https://rrrotatorrr.bandcamp.com https://soundcloud.com/rrrotatorrr

Peace. It’s what we are all after. How do we get it? Why has it been difficult to obtain in life? Is it really so elusive to all mankind or are there some individuals that have found it? How, indeed, can we have peace? Those who keep the law of God in their hearts and obey it in their actions add peace to their lives. Rather than seeking peace as an end, we should seek to follow Christ. When we do we will find that peace comes as a side effect that we receive from Him.
