Illinois lawmakers have introduced House Bill 5723, dubbed the Illinois Epstein Files Investigation Act, to create a bipartisan state commission with subpoena power tasked with investigating any crimes tied to Jeffrey Epstein's sex-trafficking network that involve Illinois — including offenses that happened in the state, targeted Illinois residents, or involved local institutions. Supporters, led by Rep. Abdelnasser Rashid and survivor advocates, argue that federal efforts have left unanswered questions and that Illinois has the authority to pursue accountability under state law. The proposed commission would be 10 members, appointed by the governor with state Senate approval, required to hold public meetings, issue periodic reports over five years, and refer potential criminal matters to the Illinois attorney general's office or a statewide grand jury for prosecution.Supporters say the bill would give the state “real teeth” — investigatory powers, subpoena authority, and the ability to pursue prosecutions where state law may have been violated — and help ensure survivors' experiences are examined with trauma-informed care. While advocates emphasize the importance of delving into records and holding accountable anyone who broke Illinois law, Republican lawmakers like House Minority Leader Tony McCombie acknowledged the gravity of Epstein's crimes but questioned whether a state commission can effectively parallel federal criminal probes. Procedural hurdles loom, as the bill was filed after a legislative deadline and may not advance until later sessions.to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.comsource:Illinois lawmakers push for Jeffrey Epstein probe with 'real teeth'Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-epstein-chronicles--5003294/support.
Lauren Windsor, investigative journalist, partner in Democracy Partners, and the Executive Director of American Family Voices, joins Deepak Puri, Founder of The Democracy Labs, to discuss state treasurers, particularly GOP members of the State Financial Officers Foundation, who wield significant power to influence state policies on climate change, diversity, LGBTQ+ rights, and access to women's healthcare. State budgets are often intentionally complex to discourage public scrutiny and can involve hundreds of millions or billions of dollars in spending on politically motivated projects. The job of the investigative reporter is to shine a light on the coordination of efforts across states and reveal conflicts of interest and misuse of authority. A recent story by Lauren is about apparent pay-to-play in Alaska, suggesting former Revenue Commissioner Adam Crum helped Governor Mike Dunleavy advance LNG pipeline and hyperscale data center initiatives using taxpayer rainy-day funds. A 2011 study published by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's National Wetlands Inventory found that 25% of Delaware is wetlands. Some of those are considered freshwater or nontidal wetlands - and are located further inland.Although they're vital to the ecosystem, Delaware does not have any statewide regulations to protect these habitats.A new bill aims to change that. Senate Bill 9 would fill gaps left by federal laws governing what humans can or can't do in protected areas. This week, Delaware Public Media's Jay Shah sat down with the bill's sponsor, State Senator Stephanie Hansen and Emily Knearl, Director of Public Policy at The Nature Conservancy to understand what this legislation would do and why it matters.

Economist and policy analyst Phil Kerpen joined Wake Up Tri-Counties to discuss how new credit card regulations could shake up wallets and businesses across Illinois and the nation. Phil Kerpen, president of American Commitment, explains that capping credit card interest rates at 10%—an idea floated by politicians across the spectrum—could make it all but impossible for most Americans to get a card at all, since lenders rely on higher rates to offset risk. Meanwhile, a new Illinois law starting July 1st will prevent credit card fees from being charged on sales tax and tips, potentially requiring double transactions at restaurants and retailers. Experts warn these changes could trigger a drop in rewards programs and even push airlines into bankruptcy. Phil Kerpen is fiercely criticizing proposed 10% interest rate caps on credit cards, calling them “disastrous” price controls. He warns that millions—especially subprime borrowers—could lose access to credit if banks can't cover losses from risk and fraud. Kerpen contends such caps would force lenders to cut off high-risk consumers, dismantle popular rewards programs, and replicate historical failures from past government intervention in markets. He targets both Donald Trump and progressive politicians for supporting the cap, warning of a potential “government-run lending” scenario. Kerpen remains adamant that market forces, not regulations, should determine credit card interest rates. American Commitment is taking an active role in shaping U.S. policy debates centered on free markets and limited government. Under the leadership of Phil Kerpen, the organization works to influence outcomes through advocacy, strategic analysis, and grassroots mobilization. By collaborating with key partners, American Commitment provides swift and impactful policy research aimed at advancing economic growth and safeguarding property rights. Kerpen's background, including his time at Americans for Prosperity and other major organizations, brings substantial expertise to the cause. The group aims to bridge the gap between policy research institutions and on-the-ground activism, amplifying the free-market voice nationwide.

The conversation covers the Trucking Resurgence reform plan, the Safer Transport Act, rising enforcement against bad actors, and new state laws in Arkansas and Alabama. Key takeaways: the industry is aggressively moving to protect CDL integrity, remove unsafe carriers, support law enforcement with better tools, and elevate professional drivers and reputable carriers who do things the right way. Robert McClure, President and CEO of The James Madison Institute, joins Light Beer Dark Money for a wide-ranging conversation on how Florida became a model for election reform, education choice, and freedom-focused public policy. The James Madison Institute is a Florida-based nonpartisan public policy research organization, and McClure has been a leading voice in advancing state-level reforms. Chris and Sean open with a fun Tallahassee story from Chris's beer-industry days, including the Busch family connection that helped spark his relationship with Sasha. Then they dig into the real substance: how Florida went from the chaos of the 2000 presidential recount to becoming a national benchmark for election administration and voter confidence. They unpack the political lessons from the “Brooks Brothers riot,” the reforms that followed, and what Arizona policymakers can learn from Florida's transformation. The conversation then turns to school choice, Empowerment Scholarship Accounts, and why giving families more control over education remains one of the most important freedom issues in America. McClure explains why education choice continues to gain ground, why teachers unions fight it so aggressively, and why parents are demanding more options for their kids. They close with a bigger discussion about federalism, founding principles, and why the fight for liberty is often won in the states first. For anyone interested in Arizona politics, Florida policy success, election integrity, school choice, and the future of conservative reform, this is an episode you do not want to miss. Iowa's 2026 governor's race is already drawing national attention — and this week it got expensive. Randy Feenstra launched a seven-figure statewide TV ad tying Rob Sand to the open borders left and positioning himself as the candidate who will "stand tall" on immigration. Chris Hagenow and ITR Foundation Policy Director John Hendrickson break down what the ad signals about the Republican primary, why immigration has become a centerpiece issue, and what it means for Sand as he tries to stake out a centrist lane in a state that keeps moving right.Rob Sand made waves this week with a social media reel blasting Iowa's budget continuation bill (SF 2461) — accusing Republicans of lacking accountability, calling out Education Savings Account vendor Odyssey, and strongly implying that if elected governor he should have the authority to force a government shutdown over budget disputes. Chris and John unpack the reel line by line: is Sand calling for shutdown power, or is this just a fundraising play? And what does his continued focus on ESA "accountability" tell us about his general election strategy — and its risks?Iowa just became the first state in the nation to receive a federal education waiver under the Trump administration's "Returning Education to the States" initiative — unlocking a $9.5 million block grant that gives Iowa parents and local schools dramatically more flexibility over how federal education dollars are spent. ITR Foundation's John Hendrickson, who wrote the definitive piece on this development, explains what the waiver actually does, why education belongs at the state level under the 10th Amendment, and why Iowa's track record on school choice — from ESAs to open enrollment to charter schools — makes it the ideal proving ground for this new model.ITR Tax Day Luncheon — April 1, 2026 at the Hilton Des Moines Downtown. On the February 26 episode of Badlands Daily, CannCon and Alpha Warrior break down a fast-moving news cycle marked by state-level pushback, border policy fallout, and escalating tension between federal agencies and local authorities. The hosts analyze new developments tied to immigration enforcement, sanctuary jurisdictions, and the broader legal battles shaping national sovereignty debates. They also examine congressional maneuvering surrounding election security measures and judicial intervention, discussing how recent rulings and legislative proposals could impact enforcement and accountability. Additional focus is given to media framing, shifting public sentiment, and how narrative control influences perception during high-pressure political moments. Throughout the episode, CannCon and Alpha explore the widening gap between state and federal priorities, asking whether the current clashes represent short-term friction or a deeper structural realignment. The conversation centers on governance authority, constitutional limits, and the strategic positioning unfolding across multiple fronts.

Many areas of the country are beset by serious housing shortages. State-level regulatory policies such as exclusionary zoning and other restrictions on construction are, according to some analysts, major causes of the crisis. Two new laws that passed in the Oregon Legislature are pushing the state toward what other countries have done to address housing: state-level zoning laws. As Sightline Institute reports, HB 2258 and HB 2138 seem to give the state much more authority and the power to override local zoning codes. Oregon has been making changes to zoning laws since 2017, and this new approach follows countries such as Japan and Australia. Micheal Andersen is the director of Cities and Towns at Sightline Institute. He joins us to share more on what these new laws could mean for the future of home development in the state.
