Are the recent problems - GME, Greensill and Archegos - signs of a damaged financial system that is so terribly fragile that a slightly bigger disaster can easily crush it? Like what Covid has done to the world's health system, are there more hidden risks in our financial system that can trigger a repeat of 2008? In this episode, Deepak and Shray explore what's happened in the US over the past few months, and examples of hidden leverage within India - from Harshad Mehta to Karvy, Zee, DHFL and more.
India's largest stock exchange, the National Stock Exchange (NSE), abruptly shut its cash and derivatives segment today, following a glitch which froze stock prices, triggering panic among investors. Trading was halted at 11:40 am on the NSE and resumed only at 3:30 pm. The glitch, which came a day ahead of the monthly F&O expiry for the February series, caused massive volatility during the last hour of trade and the same may continue on Thursday as well. Post resumption, both the Sensex and the Nifty indices witnessed bouts of volatility as investors scurried to square off their positions, and execute morning trades. The benchmark S&P BSE Sensex zoomed to day's high during the fag-end of the session, soaring 1,130 points. The index, however, ended 1,030 points, or 2 per cent, higher at 50,782 levels. HDFC Bank, Axis Bank, ICICI Bank, SBI, and HDFC, up in the range of 3 per cent and 5 per cent, were the top gainers among the 23 stocks that ended in the green. On the contrary, Dr Reddy's Labs, TCS, Sun Pharma, Asian Paints and Power Grid declined between 0.5 per cent and 1.4 per cent and closed as top laggards on the index. Weightage-wise, HDFC Bank, Reliance Industries, HDFC, ICICI Bank, and Axis Bank supported the index. Overall, market breadth on the BSE remained titled towards advances with over 1,850 stocks settling higher, compared with around 1,100 stocks that slipped today. Meanwhile, the Nifty50 closed above the 14,950-mark, up 272 points or 1.9 per cent, at 14,982 levels. The index hit an intra-day high of 15,009. In the broader markets, the S&P BSE SmallCap index settled 1 per cent higher on the back of gains in IIFL Securities, Manali Petrochemicals, Religare Broking, Dredging Corporation of India, and Nava Bharat Ventures, that gained in the range of 11 per cent and 20 per cent. The S&P BSEMidCap index, on the other hand, ended 0.77 per cent higher. Sectorally, the Nifty Bank and Private Bank indices closed 4 per cent higher each after Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said that the government has lifted embargo on grant of government business to private banks. Federal Bank, Bandhan Bank, IDFC First Bank, and IndusInd Bank remained top performers on the Nifty Private Bank index. That apart, the Nifty Financial Services, Realty, and Media indices closed between 1 per cent and 2.5 per cent higher. On the downside, the Nifty IT was the only index that ended in the red, down 0.11 per cent. In the primary market, the 3-day IPO of Heranba Industries was oversubscribed nearly 3 times till 5 PM on the NSE on the second day of the issue. In another development, the Union Cabinet took two important decisions today. First, it approved a production-linked incentive scheme for IT hardware products including laptops, tablets, personal computers (PCs) and servers. Besides, it also approved the PLI scheme for Pharmaceuticals from FY21 to FY29 to promote production of high value products in the country and increase value addition in exports. That apart, on the coronavirus front, the Cabinet approved to vaccinate people above 60 years of age and those above 45 years of age with co-morbidities at 10,000 government and over 20,000 private vaccination centres, from March 1. Lastly an update for Karvy Stock Broking clients. Axis Securities has emerged as the successful bidder to takeover the Trading accounts held by Karvy with NSE, BSE, and MSE. The said transfer of Trading accounts is subject to the remittance of the bid amount and submission of the necessary documents in relation thereto. Europe's STOXX 600 rose in early trading, up 0.1 per cent, Germany's DAX was up 0.4 per cent, but London's FTSE 100 was down 0.7 per cent. The MSCI world equity index, which tracks share

Karvy Stock Broking, one of the largest retail brokerage houses in India, got mired in controversy last year after several investors complained about the delay in receiving their transaction payout funds. The Securities and Exchange Board of India, after taking cognizance of the case and undertaking due-diligence, banned the brokerage firm from taking fresh business on November 22, 2019 for misappropriating clients' funds. Cut to an year later, the NSE and BSE on November 24, 2020 declared the brokerage firm as 'defaulter' and expelled it from their membership. In this edition of the Business Standard Podcast Nikita Vashisht talks to B Gopkumar, MD and CEO of Axis Securities to what is the way forward for the firm's clients
Han pasado siete arduos meses desde la última vez pero venimos bien rocosos y ¡con ganas de al menos grabar otra vez en los próximos siete meses! Broad-based buying across sectors in the fag end of the trading session pulled indices back in the positive territory on Wednesday after news agency Bloomberg reported that the US and China were closer to signing trade deal despite heated rhetoric. According to the news agency, the US and China are moving closer to agreeing on the amount of tariffs that would be rolled back in a phase-one trade deal despite tensions over Hong Kong. Consequently, the benchmarks settled near day's high with metals and financial stocks being the top contributors towards gains. The S&P BSE Sensex surged 374 points from day's low to settle at 40,850 level, up 175 points or 0.43 per cent, while the Nifty50 was back above the psychological mark of 12,000, and settled 49 points, or 0.41 per cent higher, at 12,043-mark. ICICI Bank, Tata Motors, SBI, and Infosys, that surged in the range of 1.5 to 7 per cent, lifted the benchmarks. Gains were, however, capped by losses in Reliance Industries and HDFC Bank that slipped up to 2 per cent. Shares of Tata Motors jumped 7 per cent in the intra-day deals today after reports said its flagship arm and UK-based luxury carmaker Jaguar Land Rover sold over 12,000 units in the US, an increase of 6.2 per cent year-on-year. On a month-on-month basis, its sales rose 19.4 per cent. The stock settled 7.11 per cent higher at Rs 169.4 on the BSE. Besides, ICICI Bank hit a new high of Rs 531.35 on the BSE in the intra-day trade after brokerages retained their ‘buy’ rating on the stock, and raised the 12-month target price in anticipation of strong earnings going forward. The private sector lender's stock surpassed its previous high of Rs 520, hit on November 28, 2019. The stock settled 4 per cent higher at the BSE at Rs 529.35. In the broader market, the S&P BSE Mid-cap index rose 0.58 per cent to settle at 14,911, while the S&P BSE small-cap index closed at 13,454, up 0.33 per cent. Meanwhile, CSB Bank logged a strong debut by listing at Rs 275, a 41 per cent premium against its issue price of Rs 195 per share on the NSE today. The stock extended its gains and rallied 57 per cent to hit a high of Rs 306.80 at the bourses. At close, the stock was at Rs 300-mark, up 9.13 per cent. Moving on to an update in the Karvy case. The Securities Appellate Tribunal on Wednesday refused any immediate relief to top lenders who had petitioned against the transfer of securities held with Karvy Stock Broking Ltd back to the clients. ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank and IndusInd Bank had contended that many of these securities have been used to borrow money from them and had asked the tribunal to either get back the securities to them or freeze them in an escrow account. SAT also asked the lenders to approach Sebi by December 6 with a fresh plea. On the policy front, the Union Cabinet today approved the launch of India's first exchange-traded fund for bonds. While announcing the decision, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said that the ETF will be a basket of bonds, issued by CPSE, CPSU, CPFI, or any other government organisation. The bonds will be tradable on the exchanges, with the small unit size of Rs 1,000. The maturity period could be either 3 or 10 years. Meanwhile, in a positive development for the economy, India’s dominant services sector bounced back to growth in November, expanding at its fastest pace in four months, on the back of a strong pick-up in new business. The Services Purchasing Managers’ Index rose to 52.7 last month, as against a contraction of 49.2 in October. The 50 point-mark separates contraction from growth on a monthly basis. A sub-index tracking demand jumped to 53.2 from October’s 50.1, encouraging firms to accelerate hiring at the fastest pace in three months. Here is a quick look at the global markets: Asia markets closed lower on Wednesday with MSCI’s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan settling 0.9 per cent lower. Japan's Nikkei d
Weak gross domestic product print for September quarter, and dip in auto sales figures after festive season weighed on investor sentiment on Monday, as market players chose to remain on the sidelines in the lacklustre trade. An improvement in the Manufacturing PMI for the month of November, too, failed to lift sentiment at D-Street. The country's manufacturing sector activity inched up to 51.2 in November from 50.6 in October but the upturn remained subdued as growth rates for new orders as well as production were modest. The benchmark S&P BSE Sensex closed 8.36 points or 0.021 per cent, higher at 40,802.17 levels. Bharti Airtel, which eventually settled 4 per cent higher, hit a fresh 52-week high in the intra-day trade today after it announced a tariff hike in the range of 15 per cent and 40 per cent across different plans. Meanwhile, peer firm Reliance Industries, which owns Reliance Jio, hit a new high of Rs 1,614, while Vodafone Idea, surged 24 per cent in the intra-day trade. On the other hand, auto stocks slipped in the trade after data showed sales of passenger vehicles in November declined after increasing in the previous month. Eicher Motors, TVS Motors, Maruti Suzuki, and Bajaj Auto settled lower in the range of 0.4 to 5 per cent. On the NSE, the broader Nifty50 index held the psychological mark of 12,000, and closed at 12,048.20, down 7.85 points or 0.065 per cent. In the broader market, mid-caps declined the most. The S&P BSE mid-cap index settled 116.65 points, or 0.77 per cent, lower at 14,968.21 levels. The S&P BSE small-cap index, on the other hand, closed at 13,508.22 level, down 52.35 points, or 0.39 per cent. In the primary market, the public issue of Ujjivan Small Finance Bank was subscribed 1.05 times till 2:45 pm on Day 1 of the offer. The offer has received bids for 12.92 crore equity shares against IPO size of 12.39 crore shares. Besides, in a major development, NSE and BSE on Monday suspended Hyderabad-based financial services major Karvy group's broking business' license for non-compliance. The move by the exchanges follows market regulator Securities and Exchange Board of India's (Sebi) order against KSBL for alleged misuse of client funds. Global markets: Asian and European markets rebounded on Monday as decent manufacturing data in China and renewed optimism over a trade deal eroded some of the jitters which emerged among investors last week. Japan's Nikkei index settled over 1 per cent higher, and South Korea's Kospi ended 0.19 per cent higher. Moreover, the Euro index rose 0.26 per cent, while the German DAX was 0.23 per cent higher.

SEBI order notes that an amount of Rs 1096 crore was transferred to Karvy Realty Private Ltd. A media report says that Karvy raised Rs 600 crores by pledging client securities. In this episode of Why Not Mint Money, we tell you what to do if you are a customer of Karvy Stock Broking.
The year 2019 has been quite eventful for the Indian markets! Right from corporate governance issues popping up almost every month, the collapse of NBFCs such IL&FS and DHFL, then the shady practices in scheduled banks such as the PMC Bank and now comes the Karvy fiasco. Read transcripts here: https://www.capitalmind.in/2019/11/podcast-the-strange-happenings-at-karvy-ep-15/ Deepak Shenoy (CEO) and Aditya Jaiswal (Analyst) discuss in detail how the Karvy fiasco unraveled followed by series of questions such as: What is a pool account and are brokers using it as means to fund themselves? Can brokers misuse the power of attorney signed by their clients? Is it safer to have demat accounts with banks? What should the existing clients of Karvy do? What happens to the banks/NBFCs who have lent money to Karvy?
Market regulator Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) on Friday night barred Karvy Stock Broking Ltd from acquiring new clients for its stockbroking business, following the alleged misuse of clients' securities worth ₹2,000 crore. This is one of the biggest cases of broker defaults in the equity segment and despite numerous regulations, Karvy is alleged to have misused client collateral for its own trades. In an effort to prevent further misuse of clients securities, Sebi barred the Hyderabad-based brokerage from acquiring any more clients till the regulator completes its investigations. Karvy was also been barred from acting on behalf of its existing clients. The practice has been rampant as many brokers enjoy powers of attorney on their clients’ demat accounts and are authorised to transfer client securities to the collateral account. The watchdog directed NSDL and CDSL not to to act upon any instruction given by Karvy in pursuance of power of attorney given by its clients. However, in view of the fact that Karvy manages a large number of clients, Sebi is ensuring smooth operations by asking depositories to monitor the movement of securities into and from the DP account of clients of KSBL. KSBL is among the country’s top 10 brokerage companies, with 244,000 customers. Broking is perhaps the only sizable business left with the group after it sold the registrar and transfer agency, Karvy Fintech, to American private equity investor General Atlantic for about Rs 1,000 crore last year. If any misuse of client money and shares by KSBL is established in Sebi’s investigation, it will be hard for the company to regain client trust, central to the business. Now, Sebi has trained guns on more brokers for misusing clients’ shares.Sources say the issue is not limited to just Karvy Stock Broking, with over three dozen more brokers under lens for misappropriating client funds to the extent of Rs 10,000 crore. Any progress in the US-China trade negotiations, macro data, and stock-specific action will keep traders busy this week even as the expiry of November series derivative contracts is set to increase volatility in the equity markets. In terms of macro data, the July-September quarter gross domestic product (GDP) is scheduled to be released post market hours on Friday. Investors will also be on the lookout for any government announcement on economic policies and disinvestment. In their places, UltraTech Cement, Titan Co Ltd and Nestle India will be added in the index. The respective stocks will react today. Also, the rebalancing of MSCI indices will take place on November 27. Berger Paints India, Colgate-Palmolive, DLF, HDFC Asset Management Company, ICICI Prudential Life Insurance, Info Edge, SBI Life Insurance and Siemens India will be added to MSCI India Index. Conversely, four stocks -- Glenmark Pharma, Indiabulls Housing Finance, Vodafone Idea and Yes Bank will be axed from the index. Investors will also keep a close eye on the Karvy saga. Market regulator Sebi on Friday barred Karvy Stock Broking Ltd from taking new clients with respect to stockbroking activities for alleged misuse of clients' securities. Markets would also be influenced by factors such as rupee-dollar trend, oil prices and investment pattern by overseas investors. Foreign portfolio investors continued their buying spree last week and have infused a net Rs 17,722 crore into the Indian markets in November so far. Global markets: Asian shares made guarded gains on Monday. MSCI’s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan bounced 0.26 per cent, Japan’s Nikkei firmed 0.8 per cent in early trade, while Australian stocks rose 0.5 per cent. The SGX Nifty was also trading higher in the early hours, indicating a flat to positive start for the domestic indices. In commodities, oil prices held near two-month highs and Brent crude futures firmed 19 cents to $63.58. On Friday, the Sensex inched slumped 216 points to close at 40,359, and the Nifty50 index ended 54 points lower at 11,914 level. According to analysts, traders should try to book profits at higher levels this week, as market has maximum call open interest at 12,000 which will act as major resistance levels for the weekly expiry, and 11,900 will act as support. Here's a trading idea by by CapitalVia Global Research Limited who recommend buying HDFC above Rs 2,242 for the target of Rs 2312 with stop-loss at Rs 2,198.
