Native American agriculture sales nearly doubled from 2017 to 2022. That's one of the takeaways from the most recent Census of Agriculture. It is now a $6.4 billion industry despite a global pandemic and a slight decrease in the number of Native farmers across the board in those five years. Also on an upward trajectory is the number of Native-owned restaurants in Albuquerque. Ohkay Owingeh chef Ryan Taylor opened Yapopup in January, settling his small catering company into a brick-and-mortar location within Tiny Grocer ABQ, which is owned by Elizabeth Gaylor (Cherokee). That's on the latest episode of The Menu on Native America Calling, our regular feature on Indigenous food news and stories. GUESTS Kelsey Scott (Lakota), chief strategy officer for the Intertribal Agriculture Council Ryan Taylor (Ohkay Owingeh), chef and owner of Yapopup Elizabeth Gaylor (Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma), owner of Tiny Grocer ABQ

What if disruption wasn't something to be feared, but rather embraced as a catalyst for growth and change? Join us for an unforgettable conversation with the steadfast Kelsey Scott, a woman who's redefining what disruptions means in her life to evolve as a human being. As a Lakota tribeswoman raised on The DX Ranch on the Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation in South Dakota, Kelsey's unique insights on embracing disturbance, managing pressure, and enhancing resilience are informed by her life experiences on the ranch and her innovative approaches to engagement in Indian Agriculture as the Chief Strategy Officer of the Intertribal Agriculture Council. In our enlightening conversation with Kelsey, we tap into the wisdom she's garnered from working closely with cattle and horses, and learning the power of pressure and release - not just with these majestic animals, but also in her everyday life. Kelsey shares with us the parallels she's drawn between these techniques and the cycles of the ecosystem. A discussion that begins with managing physical aches and pains expands into a profound exploration of overcoming anxiety and the importance of establishing a homeostasis for overall wellbeing. As our conversation winds down, Kelsey offers her perspective on the strides she and her father, the USDA Farm Service Agency Administrator, have taken in strategizing new ways to improve the quality of life for BIPOC agricultural leaders and producers. As we explore the power of resilience and community appreciation, we also dive into Kelsey's unique marketing strategies for DX Beef and how they've positively impacted her local community. This episode is a treasure trove of insights, offering a new outlook on embracing disturbance, managing pressure, and enhancing resilience in our lives. Tune in to be inspired and learn something new.References:Ray Hunt, Buck Brannaman, - Horsemanshiphttps://thedxranch.com/https://www.projecth3lp.org/https://www.indianag.org/

There's enormous potential for agriculture to help reverse climate change through its potential to sequester carbon from the atmosphere. But are we asking farmers too much? Already laden with debt and the pressure to produce more with less, how might we support already cash-strapped and stressed farmers in their transition to regenerative agriculture? Should it be their responsibility alone? In this episode, we continue our exploration of regenerative agriculture, its potential, and its challenges with Benedikt Bösel, Germany's first regen ag Farmer of the Year and owner of Gut&Bösel; Jennifer O'Connor, Executive Director of Funders for Regenerative Agriculture; Felipe Villela, founder of reNature; and Kelsey Scott, Director of Programs at the Intertribal Agriculture Council and owner of DX Beef. We discuss: What needs to change to support farmers throughout the transition to farming regenerativelyWho should bear responsibility for driving this transition? Farmers, corporates, governments? What regenerative producers actually need from corporates, governments, and investorsThe language of regeneration and how to have productive conversations with producersWhat collaboration models and other resources exist or should exist to help themFunding sources for farmers, where they can access it, and the challenges involvedThe mindset shift needed among corporations and policymakers to help producers manage their lands regeneratively and profitablyIndigenous producers and the generational damage that is being done on existing farms Show Notes: Gut&BöselFunders for Regenerative AgriculturereNatureIntertribal Agriculture CouncilDX Beef Subscribe to our newsletters that track all of the business, tech, and investment trends in food: https://tinyurl.com/nfonewsletters Follow us on Instagram: @newfoodorderpod Follow us on Linkedin: @agfunder & @foodtechconnect Thank you to Foodshot Global & New Hope Network for sponsoring the series. Failed Marriages, Forgiveness, and True Friends? (um, "avoid," "do it for yourself," and "nurture," respectively) But it's not always that easy...is it? Sometimes life has a lesson in store for us and THE ONLY WAY IS THROUGH. I'm here on the other side of that lesson. And little has molded me in the way that my first marriage has. Kelsey Scott and I have repaired and deepened our friendship after a 2-year marriage. This is an episode you're not going to want to miss. Kelsey believes that tribal sovereignty starts with food sovereignty.

Talk about the power of network. Katie knows Kate from DC. Kate - now in Kiev - knows Kelsey from LA. Kelsey in LA is from Atlanta. WE ARE IN ATLANTA. What is this world?Meet Kelsey Scott; or, maybe just get to know her better. Kelsey is two-time Emmy nominated actress, writer, teacher, speaker and philanthropist. In our 40-minute sit down we talk about the sacrifice required to pursue one's dreams; not just as an actor in LA, but for anyone bold enough to walk in their purpose. In a world that, as she says - has a short attention span and memory - the idea of "arriving" really isn't a thing. Whether you're fighting to break in, or fighting to stay relevant, it's all work - just a different kind. Kelsey talks candidly, demystifying the two-dimensional glamour that is often synonymous with Hollywood. She says when she is at her best she is Deloris Scott's daughter. We talk about the lasting, daily impact her mom has on her life. My favorite line, "My mom said I could be whatever I wanted to be - and I believed her." That belief in herself, and in her mom, is why Kelsey has had an enduring career spanning decades as a working actor in television, film and theater.Kelsey lives in a world of vulnerability that most of us only visit from time to time. This conversation is a peak into that world, and her wisdom on the power of staying there.Enjoy, K+KMore on Kelsey ScottFollow @mskelseyscott on InstagramVisit Kelsey Scott.comWhat She's ReadingAll About Love by Bell HooksGive Ya Girls Some LoveLeave a Review (5 whole stars)Join the IT ALL Membership (in case you can't get enough)
