All the Film Things

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 18, 2025 41:00

On the forty- fourth episode of All the Film Things, I had the pleasure of interviewing award- winning screenwriter/ novelist/ film director Steven Bernstein! Steven Bernstein has been working in the industry for nearly 40 years behind the camera, often as a cinematographer, under the direction of acclaimed filmmakers from Noah Baumbach to Patty Jenkins before directing his own feature films. He earned a Golden Lion at the Cannes Film Festival early in his career for working as a cinematographer on commercials in the UK. Steven has been the director of photography on nearly 50 films, some of which include critically acclaimed films Like Water for Chocolate (1993) and Monster (2003), and beloved comedies such as The Waterboy (1998) and White Chicks (2004). Alongside Emmanual Lubezki, Steven earned the Best Artistic Contribution Award at the Tokyo International Film Festival for his work on the 1993 film Like Water for Chocolate. Steven's directorial feature film debut, Decoding Annie Parker (2013), earned him The Alfred P. Sloan Feature Film Prize at the 2013 Hamptons International Film Festival and his sophomore directorial feature, Last Call (2017) was hailed as “Oscar- worthy” and earned lead actor Rhys Ifans the Best Actor award at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival. Steven also co-hosts, alongside Vince Grimes, the terrific and insightful weekly podcast “Filmmaker and Fan's” which you should all check out on the same platform you listen to ATFT on but here's the link to listen on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/0cepNNzk8evxnNEAPUPXPX?si=33b9632bbe4a49e9 Steven's debut novel, a thriller titled GRQ: Get Rich Quick, was published on June 3 and has been continuously earning rave reviews so definitely buy yourself a copy now wherever books are sold, including Barnes & Noble through this link: https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/grq-steven-bernstein/1147259290! This novella, which is set over the course of one day in a seemingly doomed Los Angeles that regularly faces natural disasters, follows Marlon who, unbeknownst to his wife, quickly tries to come up with the money needed to save the house from being repossessed leading him to make a dicey investment in cryptocurrency. GRQ, which is the first of a series in the works, ends with a surprising twist that provokes a lot of questions by considering what is important in life. GRQ: The Movie, which Steven directed based on his book, will be having a worldwide theatrical release later this year so I'll keep you all updated here on the ATFT Instagram on its release! This is Steven's first time on ATFT! We got connected on Instagram over a year ago through the comments under a post he made about the film 20th Century Women! This episode was recorded on May 29, 2025. In this episode, Steven talks about the films and filmmaker who made him fall in love with cinema, the film industry currently being in crises, and the technical, underlying ways to bring out a great performance as both a cinematographer and filmmaker. Steven also discusses the unique, visceral experience of cinema, working closely with Charlize Theron on the film that earned her an Oscar, what he hopes people take away from his films, and much more on the latest episode of All the Film Things! Background music created and used with permission by the Copyright Free Music - Background Music for Videos channel on YouTube.

Welcome back to the Video Store Podcast and a happy belated Record Store Day to you! Since you hang out at the Video Store, you are obviously a fan of physical media, and I hope that includes vinyl records. I've selected four films this week that look at films featuring records and record stores. High Fidelity (2000)First up is High Fidelity featuring John Cusack, Iben Hjejle, Todd Luiso, Jack Black, Lisa Bonet, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Joan Cusack, and Tim Robbins. Reeling from a big break-up with Laura (Iben Hjejle), Rob Gordon (John Cusack), recounts to the audience his top 5 break-ups of all time, the same way he would his top 5 favorite albums. As he walks the audience through his break-ups, he starts to work through his relational issues. It's a film about working through your own problems, taking responsibility for how you've hurt other people, and trying to be better. And with its setting of Rob's record store, a killer soundtrack, and all the vinyl records everywhere, it's a great pick for this theme. Sing Street (2016)Sing Street is the best film nobody saw in 2016. Set in the early-mid 80s, Conor is forced to change schools due to the economic downturn in Ireland at the time and his parents' looming separation. Struggling to fit in, Conor finds solace in music and music videos with his brother Brendan. Conor decides he wants to start a band that forms an accidental community among his bandmates, an aspiring model, Raphina, and even the school bully. Conor and his friends start to find hope through music, even in a seemingly hopeless and desperate situation. There are loads of things to love about Sing Street, but the original music really makes this film something special. The soundtrack even got a vinyl release, so look for it at your local record shop, though, heads up, it's a bit hard to track down in the US. Pirate Radio (released as The Boat That Rocked in the UK) (2009)Set in 1966, Pirate Radio tells the story of a young teenage boy, Carl, who is sent to live with his godfather on Radio Rock, the pirate radio station ship anchored in the North Sea, broadcasting rock music to the UK. Featuring a killer ensemble cast, including Philip Seymour Hoffman, Billy Nighy, Rhys Ifans, Nick Frost, Emma Thompson, January Jones, Kenneth Branagh, Chris O'Dowd, and so many more, this is a wonderful film about getting into trouble for the right reasons. The film centers on the love of music and finding where you fit in. Plus, look at all that beautiful, vintage radio equipment and the shelves and shelves of records. Absolutely gorgeous. Empire Records (1995)The last film I've selected for today is Empire Records. While set in a record shop, this is a film that's really more about finding out who you are and finding where you fit. For the group of young misfits that work at Empire Records, it's right there at the record store. This is a story about protecting that found family and celebrating the good things in your life. Plus you'll want to have a dance party with your chosen family at the end of the movie. Thanks for joining us this week at the Video Store Podcast. As the great philosopher Corrine Bailey Rae says, “Girl, put your records on. Tell me your favorite song. Just go ahead let your hair down,” while you spin some records and movies about records. Thanks for reading Video Store Podcast! This post is public so feel free to share it. This is a public episode. Come along as we meet William Thacker, a mumbly bookstore owner who falls for Anna Scott, a famous actress who enjoys walking around town without any security. The problem might also be that Anna Scott is the worst character ever but ya know... It's the paparazzi's fault!! Through British jokes, quirky friends, and some Britney Spears Crossroad's slumber party trauma dumping, the two discover that they want to be together even though Anna Scott still sucks... Robert Winfree, Mark Radulich and Jason Teasley  present their Venom The Last Dance 2024 Movie Review!Venom: The Last Dance is a 2024 American superhero film written and directed by Kelly Marcel, which features the Marvel Comics character Venom. The final installment of the Venom trilogy following Venom (2018) and Venom: Let There Be Carnage (2021), it is the fifth film in Sony's Spider-Man Universe (SSU). It stars Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock and Venom, alongside Chiwetel Ejiofor, Juno Temple, Rhys Ifans, Stephen Graham, Peggy Lu, Clark Backo, Alanna Ubach, and Andy Serkis.Hardy revealed in August 2018 that he was signed on to appear in a third and final Venom film and Sony Pictures began development by December 2021 after the second film was released. Marcel and Hardy were writing the script by June 2022, and Marcel was set to make her directorial debut with the film that October. New cast members, including Ejiofor and Temple, joined in mid-2023 and filming began at the end of June 2023 in Spain. Production was halted the next month due to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike, and resumed that November after the strike ended. The film was completed by the end of February 2024 and its title was revealed a month later.Venom: The Last Dance premiered at the Regal Times Square theater in New York City on October 21, 2024, and was released in the United States on October 25. Like its predecessor, the film received mixed reviews from critics, and has grossed $175 million worldwide.Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsohttps://www.teepublic.com/user/radulich-in-broadcasting-networkFB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulichInstagram: markkind76RIBN Album Playlist: https://suno.com/playlist/91d704c9-d1ea-45a0-9ffe-5069497bad59

Well, here we are. After 6 years, the Venom trilogy has come to a close... for now. Venom: The Last Dance has now hit theaters worldwide and for a long time, I have been very open that I am a big fan of these films because they're just fun! I've also always been a big Tom Hardy fan and these movies just really let him off the leash. As a huge Spider-Man fan though, I can't exactly say that these films' interpretation of Venom is what I always imagined the character to be in live-action, and it still disappoints me that we're still yet to get a truly definitive take on that character onscreen. Does Venom: The Last Dance provide the dumb fun of the previous two entires... or is this surpassingly the worst one yet? Find out in this NON-SPOILER review! Venom: The Last Dance: Directed by: Kelly Marcel Screenplay by: Kelly Marcel Story by: Tom Hardy & Kelly Marcel Based on the Marvel Comics Produced by: Avi Arad, Matt Tolmach, Amy Pascal, Kelly Marcel, Tom Hardy, Hutch Parker Executive Producer: Joe Caracciolo Jr. Music by: Dan Deacon Cinematography by: Fabian Wagner Editing by: Mark Sanger Casting by: Bret Howe, Mary Vernieu Production Design by: Sean Haworth, Chris Lowe Costume Design by: Daniel Orlandi Cast: Tom Hardy, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Juno Temple, Rhys Ifans, Stephen Graham, Peggy Lu, Alanna Ubach Synopsis: Eddie and Venom are on the run. Hunted by both of their worlds and with the net closing in, the duo are forced into a devastating decision that will bring the curtains down on Venom and Eddie's last dance.

RIGHT OUT OF THEATER - Venom The Last Dance Movie Review!  Snag Some RR Swag! https://www.rejectnationshop.com/ After being promised a Spider-Man crossover at the end of Venom Let There Be Carnage...well...we at least get Venom 3 still! But hey, is it surprisingly the best one yet, still?! Here's what Greg Alba & John Humphrey gotta say. Venom The Last Dance stars Knull, Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock, Rhys Ifans not as Doctor Connors from The Amazing Spider-Man, Chiwetel Ejifor not as Baron Mordo, & some cameo surprises along the way. Let's hope this still somehow paves the way for Venom to enter the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) as we await Kraven The Hunter...while still detoxing Madame Web & Morbius.   #Venom #venomthelastdance #IMAX #venom3 #movie #moviereview #review #reaction #reactionvideo #moviereaction #firstimewatching #marvel #mcu #marvelstudios #spiderman #spiderverse  Support The Channel By Getting Some REEL REJECTS Apparel! https://www.rejectnationshop.com/ Music Used In Manscaped Ad:  Hat the Jazz by Twin Musicom is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 license. https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/ POWERED BY @GFUEL Visit https://gfuel.ly/3wD5Ygo and use code REJECTNATION for 20% off select tubs!! Episode 28: Mr. Nobody with Josie Cruz

On the twenty- eighth episode of ATFT, cinematographer Josie Cruz joins me in analyzing (and solving) Jaco Van Dormael's 2009 film Mr. Nobody as it celebrates its 15th anniversary! This episode is spoiler filled. Mr. Nobody is a sci- fi fantasy film that explores the butterfly effect by portraying the story in a non- linear structure. The film follows Nemo Nobody (at various points in his life from pre- birth to 118 years old) who, at nine years- old, is faced with an impossible decision when his parents divorce: should he live with his mother or his father? Through his contemplation, we see the many different life paths he would have through either decision… adding up to about twelve different lives. It is a beautiful film viewed through a child's eyes about indecision and committing to decisions while also exploring scientific concepts like the Big Crunch theory. The film stars Jared Leto, Diane Kruger, Sarah Polley, Juno Temple, and Rhys Ifans. Mr. Nobody has become a hidden gem, possibly because it was not released in the US. Mr. Nobody is a very confusing film. It is challenging to follow and possibly even harder to articulate in discussion. At times I felt as though I failed at explaining and hypothesizing this film since I wasn't sure I was making sense. I hope those who have seen Mr. Nobody are empathetic towards this and, as Josie suggests, maybe us trying to talk about this film makes the episode even more enjoyable.  This is Josie's second appearance on ATFT! Josie was a guest on the Past Lives episode released last December. Not only do I regard that episode as one of the best ATFT episodes released thus far, I was stunned by Josie's analytical takes when dissecting the film. She has become one of my favorite people to analyze films with. As we discuss in the beginning of this episode, there are some similarities to Past Lives and Mr. Nobody, which is exactly why I wanted her to join me in discussing this beautiful, complex hidden gem. This episode was recorded on August 22, 2024.  Josie is a Jacksonville- based cinematographer who has been streaming live, under the username jojigami, on Twitch for four years now! She streams fun video games such as Until Then with realistic interactive characters in a truly extraordinarily designed visuals and music. As someone who has joined her for two streams, it is really fun to watch Josie play these games while interacting in the chat. Click this link, https://www.twitch.tv/jojigami, to follow Josie on Twitch, watch her past streams, and leave a donation on her “About” page! Keep listening until the end of the episode to learn more about Josie's Twitch streams and when you can join her livestreams! In this episode, Josie and I attempt to understand Mr. Nobody while also analyze the deeper meanings underlying the film. We also make comparisons to other films. While Josie compared Mr. Nobody to Everything Everywhere All at Once, I compared the film to Tenet. Josie also talks about her personal resonance to the film, why she liked probably- unlikable character Elise, and her favorite of Nemo's many possible life paths. Ep553 - Niclas Larsson, Writer-Director Ewan McGregor Film ‘Mother Couch'

Creative Principles

Niclas Larsson was a child actor who got interested in directing short films around age twelve. “I watched cheap American movies from the 90s,” says the Swedish writer-director, “And I loved them. I didn't get into serious cinema until maybe 15-16, but I didn't like them until I was probably 20.”  Comedies like Freaky Friday and 13 Going on 30 shaped his thinking on cinema. “I deal with magical realism and surrealism and heightened reality.” In some ways, Larsson hopes to model Quentin Tarantino, who also appreciates “cheap movies” and turns them into more complex narratives.  In his latest film, Mother Couch, three adult children (Ewan McGregor, Rhys Ifans, and Lara Flynn Boyle) are brought together when their mother (Ellen Burstyn) refuses to move from a couch in a nearly abandoned furniture store.  “I spent a lot of time with my grandparents. They didn't care about [R-ratings] and loved horror, so I remember watching The Shining around age 10 and realizing it was something else. I felt immersed in an experience of cinema. It wasn't feel-good. I felt worse, but I was immersed in it.” Films like Requiem for a Dream, There Will Be Blood, The Dark Knight, and No Country for Old Men made him think, “How can I do that? How can I do what we call cinema?”  “I've been going around with Mother Couch for about a year. I have a lot of walk-outs. It's a provocative movie and it's not for everybody. I didn't intend for it to be for everybody, but with each screening, a bunch of kids stayed and it did something for them.” Mother, Couch will be available for streaming on September 13th. As a special note, this was part of our new LIVE interview series in partnership with Buzztown, a community for serious screenwriters, where students also participated in this interview. John Dorney and Tom Salinsky from Best Pick podcast join Flixwatcher to review Tom's choice Nyad. Nyad (2023) is a biographical sports drama based on swimmer Diana Nyad's life and her book Find a Way: The Inspiring Story of One Woman's Pursuit of a Lifelong Dream. It stars Annette Bening as Diana and Jodie Foster as Bonnie Stoll, Diana's best friend and trainer. Rhys Ifans also stars as John Bartlett, the navigator of her support ship. The film follows Diana as she attempts to complete the 110-mile nonstop swim from Cuba to Florida that has eluded her since 1978. In 2011, at the age of 60 Diana makes the first of many attempts to complete the journey. Nyad follows a standard sports biopic template, except there are big questions about the validity of her completed swim. Not only is the main swim potentially not 100% accurate, some of the major moments in the Nyad completely fictional. There was no shark! Recommendability scores for Nyad were firmly floating around the threes, not a bad film but also not an especially exciting or remarkable one. Everyone was in agreement that it is also a good film to watch while doing a task, so not particularly high on engagement, which gives an overall score of 2.70.
