In this episode, number 322, I sit down with sex therapist Dr. Juliana Hauser for a deeply personal and powerful conversation about her experience with surgical menopause. She opens up about the decision-making process around her hysterectomy—what led her there, what she wishes she'd known beforehand, and how it impacted her physically, emotionally, and sexually. We discuss the importance of thoroughly understanding your hysterectomy options—not all procedures are the same, and having the right information can make a significant difference. Dr. Hauser shares how guided imagery became a key part of her healing process, and we dive into the complicated (and often frustrating) world of hormone therapy. She also brings up the role of doulas—not just for birth, but for menopause—highlighting how emotional support can be just as essential as medical care. We explore why open communication in relationships matters so much, especially when it comes to sexual confidence and intimacy post-surgery. This conversation is raw, real, and full of wisdom for anyone navigating hormonal changes, recovery after hysterectomy, or simply learning to advocate for themselves in a system that doesn't always listen. https://dr-juliana.com/ https://flourishwholehealth.com/ Order my book "You Are Not Broken: Stop "Should-ing" All Over You Sex Life" and "Menopause Moment: Science, Hormones and Mindset for Optimal Longevity" Listen to my Tedx Talk: Why we need adult sex ed Take my Adult Sex Ed Master Class: My Website Interested in my sexual health and hormone clinic? Host Jason Blitman welcomes bestselling author Victoria "V.E." Schwab for a conversation about her remarkable milestone—her 25th book, Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil. They discuss the profound power of names, exploring how identity shapes both fantasy storytelling and LGBTQIA+ narratives, the impact of representation in literature, and the moment that nearly drove Schwab to walk away from writing altogether. Later, Melissa Febos joins Jason as our Guest Gay Reader, calling in from her treadmill desk, to share what she's been reading as well as more about her new memoir, The Dry Season. Victoria "V.E." Schwab is the #1 New York Times bestselling author of more than twenty books, including the acclaimed Shades universe, the Villains series, the City of Ghosts series, Gallant, The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue and The Fragile Threads of Power. When not haunting Paris streets or trudging up English hillsides, she lives in Edinburgh, Scotland, and is usually tucked in the corner of a coffee shop, dreaming up monsters.Melissa Febos is the nationally bestselling author of four books, including Girlhood—which won the National Book Critics Circle Award in Criticism, and Body Work: The Radical Power of Personal Narrative. She has been awarded prizes and fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, LAMBDA Literary, the National Endowment for the Arts, the British Library, the Black Mountain Institute, the Bogliasco Foundation, and others. Her work has appeared in The Paris Review, The New Yorker, The New York Times Magazine, The Best American Essays, Vogue, The Sewanee Review, New York Review of Books, and elsewhere. Psychiatry's quest for credibility as a scientific discipline led it to adopt a disorder-label orientation in which mental conditions are categorized in terms of measurable behavioral criteria. In Reclaiming the Self in Psychiatry: Centering personal narrative for a humanist science (Routledge, 2025) Şerife Tekin offers an alternative framework that decenters the label and recenters the self. Tekin argues that how patients try to make sense of their experiences through self-narratives – including self-diagnosed labels – is an essential source of information for tailoring treatment. Tekin, who is associate professor of philosophy at State University of New York (SUNY) Upstate Medical University, proposes the Multitudinous Self (MuSe) model for integrating the patient's self-perspective back into the psychiatric picture and helping psychiatry itself embrace a more sophisticated notion of scientific objectivity. 25EFLY2 valid 1st April 2025 - 30th September 2025 25EFLY3 valid 1st July 2025 - 31st December 2025 Learn more about your ad choices. I recently spoke with Sam Bernstein, co-founder of Loper, a free mobile app designed to help students explore and discover their best educational opportunities after high school. The inspiration for Loper came out of the pandemic, where “life on pause” led to two college friends (Sam and his co-founder Eric) spending long nights discussing their shared passion: education. Fast forward two years and they quit their jobs to launch Loper, which has now helped nearly 200,000 students find best-fit opportunities after high school. Since founding Loper Sam has spoken at nearly a dozen industry conferences, and he always loves the opportunity to present to both students and parents on college and career readiness. Sam lives in Chicago, loves to bike, and (so far) has kept up with his 2025 resolution to read more fiction. In our conversation, Sam and I discussed: How students can use the Loper app to discover their best fit college How parents can use the app to help their student better manage the college planning process How counselors can use Loper to help their students with the college process And much more… To learn more about Loper, go to getloper.com or download the app for free. ---------- Start your scholarship journey this summer with the Scholarship Summer Camp. Part 1 Trick Mirror by Jia Tolentino Summary"Trick Mirror: Reflections on Self-Delusion" is a collection of essays by Jia Tolentino that explores the complexities of modern life, particularly in the context of digital culture and identity. Each essay reflects on various themes such as self-identity, social media, online culture, feminism, and the impact of capitalism. Key Themes and Summaries:The Self in the Age of Social Media: Tolentino examines how social media shapes our perceptions of self and others, discussing issues like performance, authenticity, and the curated nature of online personas. She reflects on how platforms foster a sense of insecurity and how they compel users to constantly engage in self-presentation.The Nature of Self-Deception: The essay titled "The I in the Internet" discusses the duality of online and offline selves, raising questions about personal truth and the ways we deceive ourselves about who we are versus who we portray online. This theme of self-deception resonates throughout the collection.Feminism and Women's Role in Society: Tolentino addresses the challenges and contradictions faced by women in the contemporary world, exploring feminist ideals and the societal pressures that often contradict these ideals. She discusses the complexities of ambition and the societal expectations placed on women.Consumer Culture and Capitalism: Several essays delve into the implications of consumerism and how capitalism influences personal identity and societal values. Tolentino critiques the commodification of personal experiences and authenticity in an increasingly commercialized world.Personal Narrative and Broader Social Issues: Tolentino often personalizes larger societal issues, using her own experiences to elucidate broader themes, making her insights relatable and poignant. This approach invites readers to reflect on their own experiences in the context of societal narratives. Conclusion:"Trick Mirror" is both a personal reflection and a societal critique, blending Tolentino's own experiences with sharp analysis of broader cultural dynamics. The essays provoke thought about the nature of selfhood and the many ways in which our identities are shaped, distorted, and transformed in the contemporary landscape, making it a compelling read for anyone interested in the intersection of culture, technology, and personal identity.Part 2 Trick Mirror AuthorJia Tolentino is a Canadian-American writer, essayist, and critic, known for her work in contemporary literature and cultural criticism. In this conversation, Heather emphasizes the importance of sharing personal testimonies as a means of spiritual empowerment and transformation. She encourages listeners to reflect on their own stories, identify breakthrough moments, and articulate their messages to reach those still struggling. By focusing on the transformation rather than the trauma, individuals can find their voice and help others find liberation through their experiences. Takeaways Your story is a weapon against spiritual forces. Focus on the transformation in your testimony. Identify your chain-breaking moment. Write a letter to your listener in need. Declare life over those who are struggling. Your voice is meant for liberation, not validation. Get clear on your message to gain confidence. Create a tagline that resonates with your audience. The enemy wants to keep you silent. Implementing these exercises emboldens your voice. For over a decade, Lisa Marker-Robbins has helped roughly 4000 high school students and young adults gain the insight, experiences, and confidence they need to embark on their post-high school path. Along the way, however, she noticed an alarming trend: Teens struggled to find their true purpose–and the fallout wasn't pretty. There was a lot of uncertainty around college majors and future careers. As a result, students weren't graduating college on time, and even when they did, they often left college underemployed or unemployed altogether. Gaining college and career clarity not only sets up the student to thrive in college and puts them on the path to future career success, but it's also beneficial for finding and winning scholarships. More than half of the private scholarships my son won, both in high school and while in college, were directly related to his college major. The other scholarships, while open to students of all majors, were still won due to his compelling Personal Narrative - his story of his plans, with the ability to point to past achievements related to those plans. Whether your child is in high school or college, if they need clarification about their future career or even their college major, I can think of no better investment than the programs that Lisa and Flourish Coaching offer. In this episode, Lisa and Dave Peterson discuss:The role of personal narratives in college applications and scholarshipsWinning strategies beyond academics and extracurricularsThe importance of future-oriented thinking for scholarship and college admission successFixing common mistakes students make and misconceptions about what matters mostKey Takeaways: Organizations offering scholarships, including colleges, expect a return on investment (ROI), whether through goodwill, marketing, or future impact stories. Applicants should align their personal narrative with the scholarship provider's mission.Up to 90% of scholarship applications are disqualified simply because students fail to follow directions, such as formatting requirements or subject line instructions in emails. While past academics and activities matter, they serve only as indicators of future success. Winning essays focus on how the student will make an impact, not just what they've done. Many families mistakenly believe scholarships are only for high school seniors, but students can apply as early as grade school and continue throughout college. “Basically, when you're applying for a scholarship, you're applying for kind of a job… you have to approach it as if you are applying for a job.” – Dave PetersonAbout Dave Peterson: Dave is a father who wanted to ensure his son would not be burdened by student loan debt. However, he realized he had not saved enough money for his son's college education. So, he devised a plan for his son to earn scholarships. As a result, Dave's son graduated from college without any debt, having earned approximately $100,000 in scholarships. 362 Stories Influence Our Identity and Personal Narrative As we close the chapter on 2024 and begin to start anew in 2025, it's time that we take a step back to reflect on the narratives and stories that we have been harboring. We must take it upon ourselves to determine if these stories still serve us or if it is time to let those stories stay a product of their time and remain in the past so that we can create new stories that reflect us who we are now. In today's monologue Sarah Elkins ruminates on the effect the story The Giving Tree had on her as both a child and a mother, and how it has inspired her to reflect on other stories that no longer serve her. Highlights What stories are you telling yourself that do not stand the test of time? How do the stories you've heard influence you and the relationships with the people around you. It's not too late to change the ending of your story. Will you choose a kinder conclusion or will you choose the option that gives you peace? Quotes “Think about the stories that you read to your children in the hopes that they'll absorb some morality lessons; Like Aesop's Fables, maybe stories from the bible, or maybe books from your culture or religion. We can't expect children to absorb those lessons but ignore the ones in Cinderella and The Giving Tree. It doesn't work like that, literature is Literature.” “As we head into the new year it's a really good time to consider our impact on the people and environment around us, and to make an effort to be more intentional about that impact.” Dear Listeners it is now your turn, I challenge you to take inventory of a few things; before you make any new years resolutions, before you pick a word of the year, or as you consider your goals for personal growth in 2025, ask yourself these questions. What influenced my identity as a child or young adult that maybe it's time to review and consider whether they still resonate and why? What stories have I been told about myself as a child that no longer align with who I am or how I want to experience myself moving forward? And what evidence can I point to, recent stories, that contradict those childhood labels that no longer fit? Lastly, what stories am I continuing to share about other people; my children, my friends, my family, and others in my community and at work, that might be contributing to negativity and division? And, as always, thank you for listening. About Sarah "Uncovering the right stories for the right audiences so executives, leaders, public speakers, and job seekers can clearly and actively demonstrate their character, values, and vision." In my work with coaching clients, I guide people to improve their communication using storytelling as the foundation of our work together. What I've realized over years of coaching and podcasting is that the majority of people don't realize the impact of the stories they share - on their internal messages, and on the people they're sharing them with. My work with leaders and people who aspire to be leaders follows a similar path to the interviews on my podcast, uncovering pivotal moments in their lives and learning how to share them to connect more authentically with others, to make their presentations and speaking more engaging, to reveal patterns that have kept them stuck or moved them forward, and to improve their relationships at work and at home. The audiobook, Your Stories Don't Define You, How You Tell Them Will is now available! Included with your purchase are two bonus tracks, songs recorded by Sarah's band, Spare Change, in her living room in Montana. Be sure to check out the Storytelling For Professionals Course as well to make sure you nail that next interview!

In our latest episode of Hustle and Flowchart, I had the pleasure of chatting with Kyle Gray. Kyle shared his unique experiences and insights into storytelling, a crucial skill for any entrepreneur. He brought in his background as a semi-nomadic individual and his journey from music to content marketing. We also touched upon the mental aspects of storytelling, the balance between professional image and vulnerability, and practical storytelling frameworks. Kyle Gray's Background and Setup Kyle Gray, the guest for this episode, has always dreamed of having his own office. His current office setup showcases sound-dampening foam, which doubles as an interesting backdrop. Despite his semi-nomadic lifestyle, Kyle emphasizes the value of having a dedicated workspace that fosters creativity and productivity. Music and Storytelling Connection Kyle and I discovered a shared passion for music; both of us are left-handed guitarists. Kyle began his journey as a songwriter, which eventually led him to content marketing. He highlighted how songwriting and storytelling are closely related, both requiring a deep understanding of connecting with an audience. Transition to Content Marketing Kyle transitioned from music to content marketing, particularly focusing on blog posts for startups. He realized that storytelling in business shared similarities with performing music. Over the years, he honed this skill by writing books, conducting workshops, and starting his own agency. This journey underscores the potential for creative skills to adapt and thrive in various fields. Storytelling Framework by Story Engine Kyle developed a storytelling framework he teaches through his company, Story Engine. This formula helps refine messaging by eliminating unnecessary content and focusing on core elements. A particular highlight is the free 45-minute course available on his website, which helps users connect deeply with their audience through storytelling. Teaching and Psychological Aspects Kyle's work often involves reducing excessive teaching content. He addresses the psychological aspects of storytelling, noting that many people have an inferiority complex and a desire to achieve. This understanding helps Kyle assist clients in crafting more impactful stories. Professional Persona vs. Vulnerability Kyle emphasizes the tension many entrepreneurs face between maintaining a polished professional image and revealing their true, vulnerable selves. He believes that showing vulnerability can be more effective in connecting with an audience, as it fosters authenticity and trust. Challenges in Sharing Stories We discussed the resistance successful individuals often have towards sharing personal stories. Many see storytelling as manipulative or less valuable than showcasing their achievements. Kyle counters this by focusing on the emotional connection stories can create, making them a powerful tool for engagement. Free Resources and Techniques One valuable resource I mentioned is a 45-minute lesson on storytelling available through Kyle's company. This lesson includes videos and questions designed to help users refine their storytelling process. Such resources are critical for anyone looking to enhance their storytelling skills effectively. Resources Mentioned: Story Engine Free Course Purpose in Suffering and Personal Growth Kyle highlights the idea of giving purpose to past and present suffering. By revisiting painful memories with a purpose, individuals can find personal growth and business insights. This approach helps turn negative experiences into powerful narratives that resonate with others. Writing and Sharing Personal Narratives Both Kyle and I agree on the importance of documenting and sharing personal stories. Writing allows for deeper connection with audiences and helps individuals uncover new opportunities. Exploring personal history can also be a liberating process that improves business perspective. Mistakes in Storytelling Kyle points out a common mistake in storytelling: limiting stories to an introduction rather than integrating them throughout the narrative. He advises on developing multiple stories rather than relying on a single origin story. This approach ensures a more engaging and dynamic presentation. Descriptive vs. Prescriptive Communication We discussed the difference between prescriptive language (telling people what to do) and descriptive language (showing the results of actions). Kyle emphasizes that descriptive language is more engaging and empowering for the audience, making it a more effective storytelling technique. Case Study on Health Coaching Kyle shared a case study involving a health coach. By focusing on the importance of improving a child's gut health through dietary changes, he showcased how storytelling can communicate benefits effectively. He used reverse psychology to make vegetables more appealing to children, turning them into adventurous eaters. Power of Language and Reframing Kyle's approach to using reverse psychology underscores the power of language and reframing. He advocates for diverse persuasive techniques to enhance communication effectiveness. Joe recognized this method as a way to create connection and intrigue within an audience. Authoring Your Future Kyle shared his personal practice of envisioning and scripting future events. This technique, similar to Jordan Peterson's self-authoring program, helps enhance mental and physical well-being. It allows individuals to visualize and create a clear path towards their goals. Resources from Episode Story Engine Free Course Jordan Peterson's Self-Authoring Program Overall, this episode of Hustle and Flowchart with Kyle Gray delves into the deep and nuanced world of storytelling. Significantly, it highlights how personal narratives can foster connection, reflect authenticity, and drive business success. Kyle's insights and frameworks offer valuable takeaways that any entrepreneur can use to enhance their storytelling skills and overall communication strategy.
