Over the next few months, I'll be mixing in some of our earlier Motherhood Meets Medicine interviews with new episodes. These ‘best of' episodes are the most shared and listened to episodes of all time! Here is today's featured episode with Dr. Daryl Johnson, listen as she discusses keeping the spark alive after kids. Over the past two and a half years, we've been living in a pandemic. This has impacted our children in so many ways, particularly the state of their mental health. As we continue to see a rise in mental health concerns with children, we have to collectively pay attention to this crisis, and determine how we can offer support. When a child's mental health is impacted in a way that is harmful to themselves or those around them, it can be challenging to alter that behavior or even discuss it. Dr. Hoet is on the podcast today to discuss how we can help our child who has a mental health disorder, or strong emotions, and how we can work through them. Ariana Hoet, PhD, is the clinical director of On Our Sleeves and a pediatric psychologist at Nationwide Children's Hospital. Dr. Hoet is deeply passionate about making sure everyone has a fair opportunity to be as healthy as possible and that people of all backgrounds are accepted and celebrated. Her personal experience as an immigrant from Maracaibo, Venezuela, has helped to fuel that passion. Becoming a psychologist and working in the health field only increased her understanding of the importance of working toward inclusion and equity in our society. She hopes to further the mission of On Our Sleeves by providing inclusive resources helpful to all adults caring for children. In today's episode we also discuss how we can help a child who is feeling thoughts of suicide or other harmful emotions, and the best ways to go about being there for them. In this episode we discuss: The pandemic being a chronic stressor. Why Dr. Hoet started On Our Sleeves. How to validate a child's heavy emotions. Details of "Operation Conversation". Reviewing warning signs if our child is feeling suicidal. We continue our Best of 2024 episodes with an episode from the Bad Watchdog podcast, hosted by Maren Machles. For the past few episodes, Maren has explored the reality of immigration detention, uplifting the conditions in Department of Homeland Security (DHS) centers where thousands are held under the presumption that they may be threats to national security. In the season finale of Bad Watchdog, we return to where we started, with the DHS's counterterrorism mission. Maren breaks down the current landscape of terrorism in the United States, where the most dangerous threat isn't posed by those who've crossed our borders illegally, but by homegrown, far-right, violent extremists. And, as Maren learns, domestic violent extremism isn't just a problem across the country — it's a problem in DHS's own ranks as well.Domestic terrorism experts Daryl Johnson and Alejandro Buetel walk Maren through the rise of far-right violent extremism in the U.S. and interrogate whether DHS is taking the threat seriously. Maren discusses both shortfalls and potential solutions for how DHS could address far-right violent extremism with the Brennan Center for Justice's Liberty's Spencer Reynolds. POGO Senior Investigator Nick Schwellenbach shares his investigation into just how many Oath Keepers are or were employed at DHS. And Maren connects with people who are working to make this broken system more humane, including activists Arely Westley and Berto Hernandez, Las Americas Director of Cross-Border Strategies Crystal Sandoval, former POGO Senior Researcher Freddy Martinez, and POGO Senior Paralegal Lance Sims.To report waste, fraud, or abuse in the federal government, please visit us at https://www.pogo.org/send-us-a-tip.Additional InformationBad Watchdog PodcastMore shows from The Democracy Group
We're excited to bring you an episode from Bad Watchdog, the podcast from the Project on Government Oversight and one of our colleagues in The Democracy Group podcast network. This is the first episode of the show's second season, which takes a deep dive on the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).Established in the wake of September 11, the DHS was entrusted with protecting the U.S. from national security threats. Since then, much of the agency's focus has been on the southern border — with tens of thousands of people held in its detention centers on a daily basis. Host Maren Machles explores how this came to be and delves into what happens to people held in immigration detention centers with the presumption that they may be national security threats. And she asks the question: How does this relate to the way DHS addresses the most dangerous threat currently facing our nation — far-right violent extremism? To find out, host Maren Machles talks with Daryl Johnson, who recounts his work as the former lead analyst for domestic terrorism at DHS. She also speaks with Alejandro Beutel, a criminologist who focuses on domestic terrorism, and Berto Hernandez, who shares their story of being brought into the U.S. as a child and held in detention by Immigration and Customs Enforcement years later.Listen to Bad WatchdogLearn more about The Democracy Group

Calls for a commission to study the January 6 “insurrection” at the Capitol present an interesting opportunity to take a long and sustained look at what ails the American republic. But the Commission needs to ask the right questions. And? It needs to be staffed by the right scholars. In this podcast, I provide what I believe to be the proper framing and focus of the Commission, and propose a structure for how to answer the most important question and who should be tasked accordingly. We don't need a commission to study the January 6, 2021, events as though it were a terrorist attack akin to the events of 9/11. We need something like the Kerner Commission of 1968, which studied the summer riots of 1967. We have lost a common commitment to a common conception of right. The country is disintegrating. Somehow we transformed a police shooting into a demand for a “racial reckoning” while ignoring growing evidence of “deaths of despair” among older while Americans. The commission needs to address the cognitive dissonance that has become a part and parcel of our national life. Please consider joining Norm Pattis's growing subscriber base on Patreon. Here's an outline of that structure: Chapter 1 — The Presidential Election of 2016 Joseph Uscinski's "American Conspiracy Theories" Chapter 2 — Big Tech Communications Shoshana Zuboff's "Age of Surveillance Capitalism" Chapter 3 — Is Hate Speech on the Rise? We all remember where we were when this tragic event occured on an Autumn day in the early 2000s, shaking a major American city to its foundation. That event, of course, was the Steve Bartman incident. Devin and Greg, along with Rondale Jenkins (Daryl Johnson) and Paul Simon (James Mastraeini) remember all the anger, drama, stalking, and contract murder of that time, as well as the raw sexuality of Bartman himself. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/firsthand/support

As we've now learned of the proliferation of military and police who helped organize and who participated in the insurrection, the people Biden and Harris must actually fear are the ones wearing guns, camo and a badge. Take down the fences and send home the National Guard. The terrorists are not coming from the outside. The real terrorists are already inside the house (and the House!). January 6th was their horror movie version of calling from somewhere downstairs. Michael Moore shares his latest thinking on the ongoing terrorist threat from the American right-wing, how the white supremacist infiltration of law enforcement and the military poses our biggest challenge, why the white, patriarchal society's perceived losing of power will motive their anger and hate for a long time, and why Biden-Harris must stick to their plans to hold the inauguration on the Capitol steps. They knew. The government knew and law enforcement knew that what took place on January 6th, 2021 was not an isolated incident or a total surprise. Not only were right-wing organizations, led by Donald Trump, planning this attack out in the open, but as far back as 2009 a Department of Homeland Security threat assessment warned of the growing right-wing domestic terror threat within America. Rather than heed the warning, the author of the post was attacked by the right-wing, the Obama administration was forced to retract the report, and everyone who worked on it was eventually out of their jobs. The author of the report was a former DHS analyst named Daryl Johnson, who joins Michael to discuss the rising terror threat from within, why it won't end anytime soon, how Trump "poured fuel on an already burning fire," and what we all must do to defend ourselves and protect humanity. Plus, Mike shares his thoughts on Impeachment Day #2, the awful press conference held by the Department of Justice and FBI, and the long overdue news that charges will soon be filed against former Michigan Governor Rick Snyder and his associates for the poisoning of the water and the children of Flint, Michigan. In 2009, a DHS report predicted that the recession coupled with the nation’s first Black president could give rise to a surge in right-wing domestic terrorism. Political backlash ensued, and the intelligence unit disbanded. Now, over a decade later, the report’s author is still ringing alarm bells. We share his story. Daryl Johnson, Det. Sgt. Heather Taylor and Rep. Norma Torres join Meghna Chakrabarti.

Daryl D. Johnson gathers inspiration for her paintings of clouds from kayaking, gardening, and motorcycling. The views are familiar, but the subtext is the underlying chi, the sweeping momentum. She was the first girl to take mechanical drawing in her high school, having to plead with the guidance counselor for permission to enroll. She likes to tell the story of her first day in class when Mr. Ruthizer took out a drawing implement and said, “This is a pencil. I am going to show you how to sharpen it." She knew immediately she was in the right class. In this episode of the Art Biz Podcast, Alyson talks with Daryl about what she calls her year of cleaning, prompted by a decision to move from her longtime New Hampshire home to New Orleans. Daryl talks about a life-changing event that led to a very different relationship with things. When you listen, you'll discover why the plan took an entire year to implement (it's brilliant). Is the federal government doing enough to fight domestic terrorism? This week we talk to one former senior law enforcement official who says no. For nearly two decades, Daryl Johnson was senior domestic terrorism analyst at the Department of Homeland Security and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms. Back in 2009 he wrote a DHS Report on “Rightwing Extremism” that was widely circulated in the law enforcement community and was leaked to the press.Instead of taking action, Republicans on Capitol Hill attacked his findings.Johnson explains how and why Donald Trump's election changed the pattern of extreme white nationalists and what can be done about it. Daryl Johnson, intelligence analyst working for several federal agencies for nearly 20 years, joins co-hosts Michael Isikoff and Daniel Klaidman to talk about his now infamous report about DHS Right-Wing Extremism. The leak and its aftermath of the report have had an adverse effect on homeland security, a threat still largely ignored in many circles today. Dr Richard Wolff and Thom think the crash made inevitable by the Great Recession bailout may be upon us. Evidence is given. -------- Turkey's dictator says he will delay his planned slaughter of the Kurds. What does this mean for the region? And as Trump is willing to partially shut down the government, supposedly for his border wall dream- Thom thinks this is all distraction from the way Trump's family will profit from sacrificing the Kurds to Turkey. Thom gives a clarifying short synopsis of the Syrian conflict in response to caller Matt's inquiry. Thom engages callers on how this all relates to geopolitics, the price of oil, the Saudis, and central American immigrants. ---------------- Former Department of Homeland Security Analyst and owner of DT Analytics, Daryl Johnson has studied right-wing terrorism, and he's here to warn us that the federal government is not monitoring them at all. Over the past few days, 11 people were massacred in a synagogue in Pittsburgh, the country’s top Democrats have been targeted with pipe bombs, and two black people were executed in a grocery store in Kentucky. Contrary to Donald Trump’s warnings, terrorists weren’t coming from Mexico or Syria; they were here in America, and some of them attended his rallies. Trump, of all people, shouldn’t be shocked by the rise of white nationalism and antisemitism in America: he has repeatedly retweeted white supremacist Twitter accounts and praised neo Nazis in Charlottesville as “very fine people.” On this special episode of Deconstructed, Mehdi Hasan is joined by former Department of Homeland Security senior domestic terrorism analyst Daryl Johnson and Christian Picciolini, a former neo Nazi who left the movement and devoted his life to peace advocacy and deradicalization, to discuss America’s descent into far right terror.
Chris Townsend, Matt Steinmetz, Daryl Johnson, and John Dickinson recapped Warriors vs Spurs in Game 1 on Warriors Wrapup.
