Our pal, director Joe Mischo returns to the podcast to give us the scoop on his latest short film, Jade! Joining him are Matt Hoodhood, who did the cinematography and Erin Kobrin who worked on costuming. Jade is currently making its way through the festival circuit and should see a wider release in early 2025. *Thank you to Jim Hall for the music! Born in Indiana and raised in Wisconsin, Joe is a son of the American heartland. As a child, he wasn't pointing a camera or standing in front of one; he was the blabber-mouth recruiting neighborhood talent to help tell his stories. Not much has changed since then. "When I was six, I destroyed my grandfather's brand new Hi8 camcorder by blasting him in the face with a super soaker. This work is my atonement." Matt Hoodhood was born and raised in Grand Rapids, MI where his fascination with light began. He studied Cinematography at Columbia College Chicago and has been living in Los Angeles since 2014 where he enjoys the great outdoors, playing folk music on the banjo, and photography (Todd Hido, Alex Webb, and Diane Arbus are some of his favorites). Erin Kobrin is a Los Angeles-based wardrobe stylist and costume designer known for crafting distinctive looks across fashion campaigns, editorials, music projects, and narrative storytelling. Drawing inspiration from the visionary artistry of Colleen Atwood and the rebellious elegance of Vivienne Westwood, Erin brings a bold and imaginative perspective to every project. Her work seamlessly blends creativity and precision, delivering unforgettable style that captivates and resonates. Book:  Beloved             By Toni Morrison   Film: Beloved (1998)   Beloved is a 1987 novel by the American writer Toni Morrison. Set after the American Civil War, it tells the story of a family of formerly enslaved people whose Cincinnati home is haunted by a malevolent spirit. Beloved is inspired by an event that actually happened: Margaret Garner, an enslaved person in Kentucky, who escaped and fled to the free state of Ohio in 1856. She was subject to capture in accordance with the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850; when U.S. marshals burst into the cabin where Garner and her husband had barricaded themselves, she was attempting to kill her children, and had already killed her two-year-old daughter, to spare them from being returned to slavery.  Morrison had come across an account of Garner titled "A Visit to the Slave Mother who Killed Her Child" in an 1856 newspaper article published in the American Baptist, and reproduced in The Black Book, a miscellaneous compilation of black history and culture that Morrison edited in 1974.   Beloved is a 1998 American psychological horror drama film directed by Jonathan Demme and starring Oprah Winfrey, Danny Glover, and Thandiwe Newton. Based on Toni Morrison's 1987 novel of the same name, the plot centers on a former slave after the American Civil War, her haunting by a poltergeist, and the visitation of her reincarnated daughter.  Despite being a box office bomb Beloved received an Oscar nomination for Best Costume Design for Colleen Atwood, the film received mostly positive reviews, and both Danny Glover and Kimberly Elise received praise for their performances.   Opening Credits; Introduction (2.30); Background History (21.42); Plot Synopsis (23.37); Book Thoughts(28.10); Let's Rate (56.09); Introducing a Film (58.22); Film Trailer (59.35); Lights, Camera, Action (1:01.35); How Many Stars (1:57.01); End Credits (2:01.20); Closing Credits (2:02.35)   Opening Credits– Epidemic Sound – copyright 2021. After graduating, Matt moved home to Philadelphia to set up a print studio and began working for the Philadelphia Opera Company and thereafter working for many theatres on both the East and West Coast of America. After working for a number of years in textile departments for theatres, Matt transitioned into the film world in Los Angeles, beginning with some dyeing on The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. This exposed him to film designers and supervisors, which subsequently led to working for designers such as Deborah Scott and Colleen Atwood. As a part of his working practices, Matt is aiming to reduce waste in his work processes, by trying to reduce water waste and to decrease the use of toxic chemicals in order to create a more sustainable and healthier working environment. Matt splits his time between the States and the UK and has worked on productions such as, ‘Titanic’, ‘Memoirs of a Geisha’, ‘Fantastic Beats and Where to Find Them’ and ‘Dumbo’ to name a few. Matt's recommendations were: -Babette's Feast -Cabaret -The Fall Directed by Tarsem Singh -Children of Men

It's a jam-packed show this week as we take flight with DUMBO and hear what TIM BURTON, RICK HEINRICHS, and COLLEEN ATWOOD have to say about the "making of" this delightful tale, followed by filmmaker SHAWN AUSTIN talking about his latest feature PRINCESS OF THE ROW, and then rounding things out with co-directors PAT McGEE and ADAM LINKENHELT as they talk about their powerful documentary AMERICAN RELAPSE. But first up it's all about that precious pachyderm DUMBO! Take a listen and hear what TIM BURTON had to say to me during our recent press conference about creating the specific sound for our little elephant as well as "Dumbovision", while production designer RICK HEINRICHS talks specifically about designing the Medici Circus and its sideshows, and costume designer COLLEEN ATWOOD talks about her design work on a Busby Berkeley inspired number which incorporated choreography, cinematography and Berkeley's legendary geometric stylings into her costume design. Then co-writer and producer SHAWN AUSTIN joins us live to talk about his latest film PRINCESS OF THE ROW. Directed by MAX CARLSON (who couldn't join us due to illness), PRINCESS OF THE ROW is a father-daughter story which takes place on Los Angeles's Skid Row. Incorporating the issues of homelessness, veterans, PTSD, poverty, foster care and more, Shawn talks in-depth with me about developing the story and incorporating these rich human elements into the plot. But once you have the words on the page, how do you bring it to life, and with PRINCESS OF THE ROW, that not only fell to cinematographer Maz Makhani, but to casting. If you see this film for no other reason, see it for the breakout performance of TAYLOR BUCK who is pure magic as she brings the character of Alicia to life. There is something almost indescribable about Taylor, especially when you put her together with EDI GATHEGI who plays Alicia's father Bo. Fans of actor Gathegi will be awed by his internalized performance and what he brings through nuanced performance to the often incommunicative war veteran. An outstanding film. An outstanding conversation with SHAWN AUSTIN you don't want to miss. Rounding out the show are co-directors PAT McGEE and ADAM LINKENHELT who talk about their latest documentary AMERICAN RELAPSE. Profiling 72 hours in Del Ray Beach, Florida, the opiate relapse capital of the United States, we are drawn into the world of two former addicts who devote their lives to trying to save others. As we meet Allie and Frankie, we learn about the ins and outs of the rehab industry, the scams and cons that are played with insurance making it a lucrative business to keep addicts in a cycle of repetitive relapse, and we meet some of the addicts who may or may not want to break their addictions. Not just a powerful throughline, but a very beautifully lensed and polished documentary which helps draw you into the story with beauty while letting us learn about the dark problem at hand. Adam, who also served as one of the editors, talks about his work in post-production which both gentlemen go in-depth about shooting on the fly, the need for a 6-month epilogue, challenges and dangers of the shoot, and yes, music and scoring. http://behindthelensonline.net http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com

From the (in)fertile imagination of Margaret Atwood, THE HANDMAID'S TALE imagines a dystopian world in which women's rights have been written off the books, reproduction is under state control, and the patriarchy reigns supreme (in other words... America in 2017!) Having swooned and shivered over the novel, the Broad Appeal boys turn to the ill-regarded 1990 film. Ever frantic Faye Dunaway longs so badly to be a "Mommie Dearest" that she conscripts Natasha Richardson's ovaries to do the heavy birthing. Scissor hands, face masks and apes – oh my! Three-time Oscar-winning costume designer Colleen Atwood has dressed some of the most iconic characters on the big screen. This includes Hannibal Lecter, Edward Scissorhands, Roxie Hart – and all the characters in eleven Tim Burton films. Atwood has been very busy this past year with Huntsman: Winter’s War, Alice Through the Looking Glass, her most recent collaboration with Tim Burton Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children, AND the Harry Potter prequel Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them for which she has been nominated for an Academy Award. From fantasy to modern day, Atwood’s costumes are always rich in detail and a deep study of character that isn’t always obvious at first. For Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children we travel back to Wales during World War II to an orphanage full of ‘peculiar’ children with unique superpowers. The character of Miss Peregrine, played by Eva Green, has the ability to transform into a bird that is reflected in the characters signature blue coat with birdlike elements. Each of the children’s costumes also has custom elements to reflect their own special powers. We are honored to be joined by such a legend in her field and ask Atwood to share how she began her career, how she approaches each character, her response to being Oscar nominated (again) and much more!
