Best known for co-creating and starring in the HBO series Insecure, Issa has attracted a significant amount of Hollywood spotlight largely by showcasing her own personal experiences and emotions on screen for all to see. Literally starting from scratch in 2011 as the singular brainchild of a homegrown, Kickstarter-funded YouTube series called Awkward Black Girl, she's come quite a long way to become the sitting President of Barbie Land in the 2023 blockbuster Barbie. She's done amazing work in films like American Fiction, The Lovebirds and The Photograph, and lent her voice to the iconic Marvel character Spider-Woman in Sony's massively successful animated film Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. She's even had the incredible opportunity to host Saturday Night Live. Issa has also notably put forth a lot of effort toward making more room for African American stories as the founder and CEO of her own film and TV production company, HOORAE. If a super successful career in entertainment wasn't enough, Issa has also found time to branch out into the retail space as co-founder and creative leader of the haircare brand Sienna Naturals—which we carry at Nordstrom—and more recently she's taken the role of chief storyteller for the jewelry brand Cast, which we also carry. We figured that all of the above was probably enough to earn her a spot on The Nordy Pod. Thanks for tuning in to episode 72. We hope you enjoy it! Did you know that YOU can be on The Nordy Pod? Obsessed with TV and passionate about writing, Issa Rae sent an unsolicited script to CBS's Cosby when she was still in middle school. By her 20's, she realized there was a certain type of character that was absent from the media landscape—a character she would eventually inhabit in her breakout YouTube series, "Mis-Adventures of Awkward Black Girl." From there, Issa created the five-season HBO hit Insecure, but first went through a bruising gauntlet of rejections and reversals as she learned to navigate Hollywood. Hollywood powerhouse Tracy Oliver sums up her career simply. "When people go right, I always tend to go left." She wrote the hit 2017 film Girls Trip, becoming the first Black woman to pen a movie that grossed over $100 million at the box office. On today's episode of The Limits, Tracy tells Jay how she has navigated her biggest Hollywood successes, from an eight-figure deal with Apple, to creating and executive producing the Amazon series, Harlem. Tracy credits a lot of her wins to her contrarian streak, which she's had from a young age. She tells Jay how she randomly started wearing a Stanford sweatshirt while growing up in South Carolina–then ended up attending. That's where Tracy met Issa Rae, and the two began collaborating. In the relatively early days of Youtube, they created the popular web series, The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl. The Internet was wowed by their presence, but multiple studio executives laughed them out of the room with blatant sexism and racism. Tracy stayed on track, steadily building her portfolio as a writer focused on the friendships of Black women, and the joy of the Black experience. Today, her career is a blueprint for so many aspiring creatives of color, and Tracy has shown time and time again that Black stories are anything but niche. In 2020, Dawn Davis, took the reins as editor-in-chief of Bon Appétit along with Condé Nast's other food brands including Epicurious, Healthyish, and Basically, across digital, video, OTT, social and print platforms. In doing so, she made history as the first woman of color to hold this position. Acknowledged as "a book world star" by the New York Times in their coverage of the appointment, Dawn's editorial vision is directing a new chapter at the 65-year-old publication. Each year in October, Bon Appétit celebrates the "Hot Ten", a list of America's Best New Restaurants in its Restaurant Issue. This year, under Dawn's guidance, the Restaurant Issue was redefined and is reflective of the times. The issue honors "the restaurants, people and organizations that gave us hope with a brand-new awards list, Heads of the Table." The issue celebrates the resilience, variety of food, and the people who make them run, the ones that sprang up or pivoted during the pandemic to help their communities and others in the industry who needed it most, from giving opportunities to the formerly incarcerated to feeding neighbors. Dawn spent decades as an accomplished publisher and author, with a passion for food and culture. Her prolific publishing career at 37 Ink, a Simon & Schuster imprint, included bestselling and award-winning titles: Heads of the Colored People by Nafissa Thomas-Spires, winner of the 2019 Whiting Award; the National Book Award finalist, Never Caught: The Washingtons' Relentless Pursuit of Their Runaway Slave; Ona Judge by Erica Armstrong Dunbar; and several New York Times bestsellers , including Tough Love: My Story of the Things Worth Fighting For by Susan Rice; The Butler: A Witness to History by Wil Haygood, later becoming a major motion picture directed by Lee Daniels; The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl by Issa Rae that helped pave the way for her tv show, Insecure; and I Can't Make This Up by Kevin Hart. Her time at HarperCollins, overseeing the Amistad imprint, resulted in publishing numerous well-known, highly acclaimed authors, including Edward P. Jones, author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, The Known World; Attica Locke, author of Black Water Rising; and Chris Gardner, author of The Pursuit of Happyness, that also became a major motion picture starring Will Smith. Her passion for food culture is exhibited in the first cookbook she acquired, Recipe of Memory: Five Generations of Mexican Cuisine by Mary Lau Valle and Victor M. Valle, and was nominated for two Julia Child Cookbook Awards and a James Beard Award. As an author, Dawn wrote If You Can Stand the Heat: Tales from Chefs and Restaurateurs profiling some of the most dynamic chefs of the times including Edna Lewis, Bobby Flay, Anthony Bourdain, Michael McCarthy, Patricia Williams and Linda Rodriguez. Listen in as Dawn and host, Brad Johnson, discuss some of the featured people, stories and recipes in the October issue of Bon Appétit: The Restaurant Issue, along with a variety of other topics including: Dawn's journey that led to publishing, some of her favorite Martha's Vineyard places to visit; reflections from time spent in Nigeria; the significance of a high-profile restaurant going meatless; expanding the dialogue around African American cuisine's contribution to American cuisine; her cookbook collection; and stories about the interesting chefs she included in the book she authored. In this episode we discuss the Golden Age of South Asian content that we seem to be enjoying in America. Shabnum and Khan talk to Sujata Day, (as seen on Insecure and Awkward Black Girl)  who tells us about her latest venture writing/directing/producing Definition Please, and by Rajiv Menon, a producer that's had a windy path to a job in entertainment but loves to bridge the gap between South Asian and North American content. We talk about what kind of content inspired us all growing up to do what we do now, and how the small pieces of South Asian focused content that see the light of day have to carry the unfair burden of representing all of us. There's space for all of us in this industry, so when are we going to see the South Asian Barry Jenkins, Ava DuVernay, Christopher Nolan? We talk about the troubles of playing an Indian character in America, and how it would be difficult to get cast if you "didn't look Indian enough," and yet struggled to get cast in anything mainstream. However, the tide is definitely turning, and we explore what role streaming platforms such as Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Hulu have played. We really hope you join us on this journey, as we covered the gamut of South Asian content having its heyday today.  Host: Shabnum Gulati Guests: Sujata Day, Rajiv Menon, Khan Asghar Illustration: Hanifa Abdul Hameed Music: AnAkkiN on SoundCloud
