The Pro Football Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will be held this weekend, August 3rd, in Canton, Ohio. Among those enshrinees of the Class of 2019 is our guest this week on The Secrets to Winning, former 16-year veteran offensive lineman Kevin Mawae. In his career, Mawae was named to eight Pro Bowls, six of which came after the age of 30, and he was a first-team All-Pro six times. He was a member of the NFL 2000s All-Decade Team, and also the NFL Players Association president from 2008-12. He played his final NFL game at the Pro Bowl in February 2010. On this episode of the podcast, Kevin dives into the attributes and the intangibles he possessed that created a Hall of Fame career.
Multiple retirements as Bengals suffer another loss along the Offensive Line...Josh Norman of the Panthers hurdles a bull! Falcons re-up Grady Jarrett, DT and MLB Deion Jones. Robbie Gould gets some of that 49er gold in a new deal. Pats' coaching staff picked over once again. Breeland Speaks could be a breakout player in Chiefs' new 4-3 defense. Something tells me Belichek and the Pats will be fine. Broncos owner Pat Bowlen passes away and HOF class that includes Tony Gonzalez, Ed Reed, Champ Bailey, Ty Law, and Kevin Mawae. Jared Lorenzen passes away and Albert Haynesworth needs a kidney. NFL once again floats idea of an 18 game season to start the CBA negotiations. How's that gonna work? Players get their panties in knots with their Madden ratings...
In this edition of @Titans: By The Numbers, we celebrate some of the players who wore Nos. 65-69. No. 65 - Retired (Elvin Bethea), No. 66 - Mike Otto, No. 67 - Quinton Spain, No. 68 - Kevin Mawae, No. 69 - Zach Piller.
Kevin Mawae was a unique center in the National Football League. When the Seahawks drafted him, he struggled to maintain weight. His weight would slip to around 275 pounds, which is tough for a center trying to block in a division loaded with big defensive tackles. He got a little too heavy in year three. By the fourth year, he was able to resolve everything and have a Hall of Fame career. He joins us on Schooled with the Professor. His story is a great one. Very few centers are able to pull on running plays outside the tackle but Mawae was one of the best in NFL history. He was also relentless, he would block until he heard the whistle. That didn’t make him popular among defensive players. Kevin is now working with Herm Edwards at Arizona State. He talks about how tough it is get offensive linemen prepared for games in college. He worries about the fundamentals blockers are using in the NFL and thinks it needs great improvement. We talk offensive line and Hall of Fame with Kevin Mawae on Schooled.
This is the time of year to plan for vacations and get ready for another NFL season. With former Seahawk center Kevin Mawae going into the Hall of Fame, Canton, Ohio, should be a great vacation destination in August. On Schooled with the Professor, we talked to Pete Fierle, the Chief of Staff and VP of Communications for the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Pete went into great detail of what is available for the fans. There are plenty of things to do, from the first pre-season game, to the parade and the Saturday night enshrinement. Fierle talked about the selection process that I have been doing since 1988. He explains what we as voters go through every year. We go into the meeting the day before the Super Bowl with 15 modern day candidates. As Pete points out, more than 90 percent of them eventually get into the Hall of Fame. Each year, though, we have to say no to 10 of them and work on getting them back for the next selection. Fierle takes us through what a Hall of Famer goes through from the time he learns of his selection to the time he speaks at the enshrinement ceremony. We talk Hall of Fame on Schooled.

Hall of Famer and former Titans center Kevin Mawae talks about the Draft, Nashville, coaching and his playing days.
Episode 285 Kevin Mawae joined the Seattle Seahawks in 1994 as the team’s second round draft pick (36th overall). Over the next 16 seasons, Mawae evolved into one of the greatest centers in the league. Mawae spent his first four seasons with Seattle before signing with the Jets in 1998. He would go on to play eight seasons in New York and then his final four seasons in Tennessee with the Titans. For his career, Mawae was named to eight Pro Bowls, six of which came after the age of 30 and was a first-team All-Pro six times. He was a member of the NFL 2000's All-Decade team, and also the former NFL Players Association President from 2008-2012. He played his final NFL game at the Pro Bowl in February of 2010. Currently a football analyst coach at Arizona State under his former Jets head coach, Herman Edwards, Mawae was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2019. On this episode of the podcast, we talk to Kevin Mawae about being inducted into the Hall of Fame, how his faith became real to him after the death of his brother, his favorite Herm Edwards story, and why mentorship was so important in his development as a man and a follower of Jesus. Before the Super Bowl, the NFL held their annual ceremony to honor some of the biggest moments and best players from the 2018 season. Sadly there was a big upset when Saquon Barkley won the rookie of the year award over Michael Dickson, but Seahawks fans could be happy to see one of the biggest awards of the night go to Seattle - the award for the best touchdown celebration. Shaquem Griffin accepted the 2018 NFL Game Changer Award and had a very nice two-minute speech that is worth a listen. Brandan and Adam also talk about the latest group of Hall of Fame players, including Kevin Mawae who was drafted by Seattle in 1994 and played with the Seahawks four years before going to the Jets. As we wait for the Seahawks 2019 free agents to get signed, Frank Clark sounds like he's ready to get a deal signed. According to a recent report, the Seahawks still haven't talked to Russell Wilson about a contract extension. Does that need to happen now when there are other players who should be a priority? The guys talk about the players Seattle will want to focus on besides Clark. The Rams lost the Super Bowl last weekend. For some Seahawks fans it was a tough decision for which team they disliked the least. We explain why this was the outcome we were hoping for and it was also the easiest outcome to cope with. Pete Carroll seemed to have an idea of how he wanted to attack the Rams if Seattle faced them a third time, but were the Patriots tactics what he had in mind? After six years of podcasting, the guys explain some of the quirks of the show for anyone who may be tuning in for the first time. Lastly, to close out the show, we discuss why Trey Wingo and North Korea both need to do better. We also honor the best commercial of the Super Bowl and a member of British royalty. Former Titan Kevin Mawae was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame for 2019, he joins us to talk the process, the celebration, his speech and his time in Tennessee.
Let my people go (to the recording studio)! We convened a roundtable of Honolulu's young Jewish professionals to kvetch about the world (and not just because it's tax season). We discuss what it's like to be a liberal Jew in Trump's America (the Nazis love him, but Israelis do too?), our generation's changing views on Israel and Palestine (and realizing we may not have been told the whole story), #BDS, The Women's March, American evangelicals' vicegrip on our foreign policy, and why Ryan's SodaStream makes him a Zionist pig. Plus, is Bernie Sanders the only one who can fix things in 2020? It's unclear, but one thing is certain: none of us are voting for Joe Biden. PS - How is this relevant to Hawaii, you ask? Take a look! https://www.timesofisrael.com/a-small-island-of-judaism-in-hawaiian-politics/ PPS: We also celebrate the worst Jew on the internet, Ben Shapiro! (Honorable mention to Mort Klein of ZOA and Josh Hammer of the Daily Wire, better luck next year fellas). But first! Ryan and Josh discuss the need to #AbolishICE, Cory Booker joining the 2020 primary, Virginia Governor Ralph Northam emerging from the racism time machine, and the officially-scheduled City Council special election in East #Honolulu (with 3 particularly blistering op-eds from #Hawaii journalists). And, sports! The Pacific Rim Cup is this weekend at Aloha Stadium, featuring Vancouver Whitecaps, Real Salt Lake, Iwaki FC, and V-Varen 2005 Nagasaki; Kristaps Porzingis and Luka Doncic making basketball news, and shoutouts to local boy Kevin Mawae on being the first Native Hawaiian to make it to the #NFL Hall of Fame (and a begrudging mazel tov to Julian Edelman). Grab a glass of Manischewitz, some gefilte fish poke, settle in, and enjoy! But call your mother first, would it kill you?
Scott Mason talks to Matt Stypulkoski of NJ Advance Media to discuss all the latest news surrounding the New York Jets! Matt discusses Manish Mehta's breaking news report that Leonard Williams is not expected to be shopped by the Jets. Plus we get into the rest of the news like Joe Namath presenting the Lombardi trophy to the Patriots, Kevin Mawae's reaction to getting into the Hall of Fame, Jamal Adams doing some Twitter tampering, gambling action in Monmouth during the Superbowl, and more! Then we give you some bonus roundtable content with TOJ's Jake Benaquisto providing his thoughts on what the Jets should do in the 2019 offseason! Matt and Ben preview the Super Bowl, discuss Kevin Mawae in the Hall of Fame, ASU Basketball beating Arizona, and the Royal Rumble
Super Bowl Sunday Yesterday we witnessed the Super Bowl. In what could only be described as the most boring game in Super Bowl history, the Patriots joined the Steelers at the grown ups table, amassing their 6th Lombardi Trophy in a game that resembled a baseball game in mid-June. The Patriots game-planned the 11th most prolific offense in NFL history into scoring purgatory, 13-3. Tony Romo showed his prodigious broadcasting and prognosticatory chops during the game. We talk about his true success rate in predicting the next play. News of the Steelers continues to disappoint as Alan Faneca was once again passed over for the Hall of Fame missing out in his fourth time as a finalist. Four linemen made it to the final 10 but only center Kevin Mawae was elected. Terry Bradshaw made the Wall Street Journal of all places, regaling readers about his path from childhood. This guy was no coddled superstar. He worked as hard on the farm as he did at his craft. Finally - what do you think about the Mean Joe Greene commercial with Aaron Donald? Joe was quite complimentary of his defensive line descendent
Scott Mason talks to Chris Nimbley of Jetsinsider.com to discuss former New York Jets Center Kevin Mawae getting selected to go into the Pro Football Hall of Fame! We talk about Mawae's career, his impact on the league, his place in Jets history, and more! Kevin Mawae Interview by Talk of Fame Network
Kevin Mawae, former President of the NFL Players Association and 16-year NFL veteran goes one-on-one with Sports Business Radio host Brian Berger to provide insight on what current and former NFL players think of NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. Mawae also shares his observations of Goodell's relationship with NFL owners. Mawae was the NFLPA President during the lockout in 2011 and was involved in the negotiations of a new CBA. The foggy wilderness of career loss or change Recently, while watching a segment on 60 Minutes Sports, I realized I know people who are experiencing the same thing as retiring NFL players - THE WILDERNESS. In December, 2013 the NFL launched The Trust, an arm of the league designed to help players transition from being players to real human beings like the rest of us. According to an article published by MMQB (Monday Morning QuarterBack), a Sports Illustrated property... Launched last month, The Trust is an arm of the NFLPA that offers free amenities to former players in areas of health and nutrition, career transition and financial education. The $22 million a year budget (which will increase by five percent annually) was procured from the 2011 collective bargaining agreement with the league. “A big part of our negotiations had little to do with dollars or the salary cap,” says Kevin Mawae, the former NFLPA president who stepped down in 2012 . “It was about benefits and post-career options. So this was a huge victory for us.” Retired NFL players interviewed in the 60 Minutes Sports piece commonly refer to leaving their playing days behind and entering into "the wilderness." It's a place that's foreign to them. They've played football for as long as they can remember. Now, they're not playing and many of them are lost. A few - seemingly, far too few (hence the need for the creation of The Trust) - think seriously about crafting a future beyond the game while they're still playing. According to an article written last year, 78% of retired NFL players will file bankruptcy within 5 years. The article cites 5 reasons why professional athletes go broke, but there are many more. And it's not just about money. It's about sense of purpose. It's about confidence. It's about figuring things out and finding your way. Mostly, it's about finding your way out of THE WILDERNESS. Have You Lost Your Job - Your Career? We don't need a recession like the ginormous one that hit in 2008 to cause job losses. Jobs are lost even in good times. They're lost when employees haven't a clue, too. Jack Stack is known as the father of open-book management. In 1983, while serving as the plant manager of an International Harvester facility in Springfield, Missouri, Jack got word the plant would be closing. That meant 119 people would be out of work. The problem was, he thought they were doing well. Truth was, they were - so far as they knew. The problem was, they didn't know what they didn't know. They didn't see the big picture in the game of business. Sparked by knowing they could lose their entire plant because they didn't have the whole picture, Jack opened up the books. Literally. He shared financial information with the people. The employees began to take on a much greater sense of ownership as they could now relate their specific jobs to the overall financial welfare of the company. Productivity and profitability soared, along with Jack Stack's celebrity in business circles. Today, The Great Game of Business is not only a book that Jack wrote, but it's an entire training system conducted by SRM Holdings. They help people find their way out of the wilderness, even if they don't know they're lost. Jack is still pretty motivated to help people avoid facing the disastrous and unexpected news of plant closings, department shutdowns and other financial woes that hit the unsuspecting. Maybe you've experienced the same frustration and consternation that Jack felt back in the early 80's. Maybe you've walked out of a place where you worked for years with nothing more than a cardboard box. Welcome to THE WILDERNESS. Have You Lost Your Identity? People commonly talk of not knowing who they are any more. That NFL player who has known nothing other than playing football since grade school suddenly isn't playing any more. Now what? The question that rings inside his head nags at him, Who am I?" One day he knew. Just the other day.
