Send us a textOn today's episode of the Cops and Writers Podcast, we are going to the greater Cleveland area to chat with Bestselling Author, Drummer, and former Police Chief Rick Porrello.Rick's first career was as a jazz drummer. At the age of 18, he got his first big break when he started touring internationally with Sammy Davis, Jr. Despite a skyrocketing music career, Rick traded his sticks for a badge. What followed was a 33-year career as a police officer in Greater Cleveland, with the last ten of those years as chief of police. As an organized crime historian, Rick Porrello's perspective is an intriguing one. He began writing his first book during family research into the murders of his grandfather and three uncles, all of whom, he learned, were mob leaders killed in Prohibition-era violence. The Rise and Fall of the Cleveland Mafia quickly became a regional favorite. His second book caught Hollywood's eye before it was published. Hollywood snapped up To Kill the Irishman—the War that Crippled the Mafia and turned it into the movie Kill the Irishman, starring Ray Stevenson, Vincent D'Onofrio, Christopher Walken, and Val Kilmer. Please enjoy this wide-ranging conversation where we talk about everything from being on tour with Sammy Davis Jr, becoming a police officer and eventually becoming the chief of police, researching his family's organized crime roots, to writing bestselling books that become movies. In today's episode, we discuss:· Playing the drums for Sammy Davis Jr. · Why Rick became a police officer and his career trajectory.· How and why, he became a police chief. · Why are we, as a culture, so fascinated with organized crime?· Omerta. What it is and what it means in mob culture.· His father's pushback when writing the book, “The Rise and Fall of the Cleveland Mafia Corn Sugar and Blood.”.· Elliot Ness and The Untouchables cleaning up police corruption in Cleveland.· The book, “Kill the Irishman.” The story of Cleveland Mob Boss Danny Greene. Why he wrote this book and how it became a major motion picture.Visit Rick Porrello's website for links to his books. Danny Greene is a legend in his time, as he was prominent in his Irish community as the one who took on the mafia in Cleveland during the 60's and 70's. Cleveland was dubbed as 'Bomb City USA' during the bombings of 1976 and Danny was right in the thick of it. Kill the Irishman is a based on the true story of his life and dealings with the Mafia. The story starts with his clash with his union boss, and then moving onto bigger fish by starting the Irish Mafia in Cleveland. He was a true force to be reckoned with. This film is not a documentary but a portrayal of how it really happened. He certainly had the luck of the Irish on his side as the mob tried to kill him many times. Directed and Written by Jonathan Hensleigh. Starring famous actors Val Kilmer, Ray Stephenson, Christopher Walken, and Vincent D'Onofrio as the leads.

Kill the Irishman chronicles the life and turbulent times of Danny Greene, a tough Irishman who gets involved with the Cleveland mafia. As far as gangster flicks go, it's not half-bad; but that also means it's generally half-good. That's because it's a relatively unfocused look at a rather complicated and violent life. It honestly feels like there's a good 30 minutes of connective tissue missing from the movie. Hence why Kill the Irishman is never equal to the sum of its parts. Sure, we get appearances from great actors like Val Kilmer, Christopher Walken, and Paul Sorvino. They are just given nothing to do. Greene, who's played by admirably by Ray Stevenson, had an incredibly compelling story to tell. It's a shame that director and screenwriter Jonathan Hensleigh didn't quite know how to do it. This is probably why it never gained much of a following and tanked at the box office. It earned a measly $1.2 million on a budget of $12 million. Despite all that, Kill the Irishman is not without its merits. And fans of gangster movies, like myself, will find elements to enjoy. For example, Greene punching in the face of a biker who hosts parties at decibel levels discourteous to the neighbors. Honestly, he had it coming. Now sit back, blow the caps off a couple Conway's Irish Ales from Great Lakes Brewing Co., and check under your car before firing up the engine! I, the Thunderous Wizard (@WriterTLK), Capt. Cash, Mayor McCheese, and Chumpzilla are defying death by harnessing the power of the Celtic warriors! This Week's Segments: Introduction/Plot Breakdown – Is that all you got? Gonna take more than a few firecrackers to kill Danny Greene! (00:00) Lingering Questions – The Double Turn Podcast blows up Vince McMahon's limo, and then we discuss what worked and what didn't work about this wannabe Goodfellas. Dr. Ken Polke grew up in a tough neighborhood in Cleveland, Ohio known as Collingwood, the same neighborhood depicted in the true story and movie “KILL THE IRISHMAN”…..set back in the 1950’s and 1960’s. This neighborhood would later come to be known as Bomb City, USA. because of the Mafia war car bombings and racial riots. Dr. Polke saw people all around him struggling and at times even dying. Ken watched his working class parents literally work their fingers to the bone to provide for him and his three siblings. And he watched neighborhood kids turn to a life of crime so they could possess fancy cars and beautiful women. At times the lure of organized crime appealed to Ken as well but with the support of his loving parents, a Catholic school education, and a belief in his own athletic abilities Ken learned how to “CONQUER HIS OWN ADVERSITIES” and make a successful life for himself. Dr. Polke did this first by playing professional football with the Miami Dolphins and then with the Cleveland Browns and then by owning a successful dental practice both in Ohio and then in Colorado. Today Dr. Polke has returned home to Cleveland ,Ohio to give back to his community much like LeBron James has returned home to Cleveland. Dr. Polke’s storyline has caused some Hollywood interest already and who knows we may see Tom Selleck playing the role of Dr. Kenneth J Polke on the BIG SCREEN. “CONQUERING YOUR ADVERSITIES” makes the movie “RUDY” seem like a fairy tale. www.conqueringyouradversities.com
