Danny Greene is a legend in his time, as he was prominent in his Irish community as the one who took on the mafia in Cleveland during the 60's and 70's. Cleveland was dubbed as 'Bomb City USA' during the bombings of 1976 and Danny was right in the thick of it. Kill the Irishman is a based on the true story of his life and dealings with the Mafia. The story starts with his clash with his union boss, and then moving onto bigger fish by starting the Irish Mafia in Cleveland. He was a true force to be reckoned with. This film is not a documentary but a portrayal of how it really happened. He certainly had the luck of the Irish on his side as the mob tried to kill him many times. Directed and Written by Jonathan Hensleigh. Starring famous actors Val Kilmer, Ray Stephenson, Christopher Walken, and Vincent D'Onofrio as the leads.

It's Die Hard in New York City! It's finally here! This week Phil and Liam drill down on one of the most beloved films in the storied Die Hard franchise: Die Hard With A Vengeance! To aid them in their investigation of this all-conquering box office smash, the boys have brought in special guest Chris Tilly, a writer, journalist and editor at Dexterto.com and one of the hosts of the hugely popular film podcast Clash of the Titles. While back working for the NYPD, detective John McClane (Bruce Willis) is targeted by a mysterious terrorist named Simon (Jeremy Irons), who effectively holds New York hostage and forces McClane to complete a series of deadly puzzles around the city to prevent further attacks. In the process, McClane teams up with Harlem store-owner Zeus Carver (Samuel L. Jackson), and together they uncover Simon's true agenda…and his real identity! The guys start by recalling their memories of seeing this hit film upon its release in the summer of 1995, before moving into the ‘Die Hard DNA' section where they identify who stayed and who left the series in terms of cast and crew. They talk about what makes this film so uniquely ‘New York', as well as the complex racial politics of the picture, before moving into a detailed discussion about the film's tortured production history, including an examination of the previous sequel concepts that were explored and abandoned, before Jonathan Hensleigh's spec script ‘Simon Says' ultimately became the basis for the third installment in the increasingly popular franchise. In ‘Anatomy of an Action Movie', the guys break down the film in terms of its premise, heroes, villains (‘Who's Your Favorite Terrorist?' is back!), and the action itself, along with the wisecracking East Coast humor that has become a staple of the series, this time bolstered by the addition of the effervescent Samuel L. Jackson. The guys dig underneath the Dolby Theatre to attend the ‘Die Hard Oscars' and steal away some gold statues, before events culminate with an appropriately collaborative edition of the ‘Double Jeopardy' trivia quiz!DIE HARD WITH A VENGEANCE trailerAt the time of release, DIE HARD WITH A VENGEANCE is streaming on Hulu, DirectTV, Fubo, and Starz and is available to rent or buy on Amazon Prime Video, Apple/iTunes, YouTube, Vudu, Redbox, AMC On Demand and all the usual platforms!AMERICAN ENGLISH SOCCER PODCASTEYE OF THE DUCK PODCASTCLASH OF THE TITLES PODCASTSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/die-hard-on-a-blank/exclusive-contentAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

linktr.ee/CatchingUpOnCinema This month is “Dark Hero” month at Catching Up On Cinema All month long, Kyle and Trevor will be reviewing superhero movies of the antihero or dark hero variety! This week, Trevor and Kyle review Jonathan Hensleigh's, The Punisher (2004)! The 2nd live-action adaptation of the Marvel comics character, and the first to be produced during the 2000's boom of the superhero genre, The Punisher (2004) stars Thomas Jane as the titular Punisher. Written and directed by first time director Jonathan Hensleigh, The Punisher is a sleepy and overplotted revenge film with a strong cast and some decent performances, but is severely lacking in momentum and energy. Not especially colorful, nor especially thrilling, The Punisher often feels cheap, with much of the proceedings feeling muted and lacking a consistent tone or energy. The film's one major saving grace comes in form of a single, 5 minute long action sequence involving former pro-wrestler Kevin Nash as “The Russian”, squaring off against Jane's Punisher in a comedic and creatively staged dust up. A middling rendition of one of the most live-action adapted characters in Marvel's roster, The Punisher was par for the course among the Daredevils (2003) and Elektras (2005) of its day, however standards have changed, and unfortunately, despite Thomas Jane and Kevin Nash's best efforts, in 2024 The Punisher just doesn't hold up. Kill the Irishman chronicles the life and turbulent times of Danny Greene, a tough Irishman who gets involved with the Cleveland mafia. As far as gangster flicks go, it's not half-bad; but that also means it's generally half-good. That's because it's a relatively unfocused look at a rather complicated and violent life. It honestly feels like there's a good 30 minutes of connective tissue missing from the movie. Hence why Kill the Irishman is never equal to the sum of its parts. Sure, we get appearances from great actors like Val Kilmer, Christopher Walken, and Paul Sorvino. They are just given nothing to do. Greene, who's played by admirably by Ray Stevenson, had an incredibly compelling story to tell. It's a shame that director and screenwriter Jonathan Hensleigh didn't quite know how to do it. This is probably why it never gained much of a following and tanked at the box office. It earned a measly $1.2 million on a budget of $12 million. Despite all that, Kill the Irishman is not without its merits. And fans of gangster movies, like myself, will find elements to enjoy. For example, Greene punching in the face of a biker who hosts parties at decibel levels discourteous to the neighbors. Honestly, he had it coming. Now sit back, blow the caps off a couple Conway's Irish Ales from Great Lakes Brewing Co., and check under your car before firing up the engine! I, the Thunderous Wizard (@WriterTLK), Capt.

Sorry for the delay on this episode. I got a promotion at work, live shows are returning, and I have been quite overwhelmed. Rest assured, the podcast is still happening. I just needed to catch up on the things which pay money in order to get around to putting together the next few episodes. So, after much delay, here's our episode on composer Max Aruj. Up and coming Los Angeles based composer Max Aruj had two exciting projects release on June 25: the crime drama Lansky from Vertical Entertainment, profiling legendary gangster Meyer Lansky, and the Liam Neeson-starring action-thriller The Ice Road from Netflix. The composer got his start in the industry working at the widely known film music hub Remote Control Productions in Santa Monica, CA where he's worked closely with composer Lorne Balfe on numerous projects, including Ad Astra, Black Widow, and HBO's His Dark Materials. Max first collaborated with Lansky writer-director Eytan Rockaway on the psychological thriller The Abandoned. Their established working relationship allowed them to delve even deeper creatively this time around. The film takes place in two time periods: Lansky in his earlier years and him looking back at his life in the '80s. To reflect this, Max utilized some '80s Vangelis colors as the musical palette, mixed with orchestra. He wanted to create both a sense of darkness and sentimentality to capture both sides of such a complicated figure. The composer also leaned into his Jewish roots by including Jewish colors in the music to reflect Lansky's identity. For The Ice Road, Max collaborated with director Jonathan Hensleigh and his goal was to really play into the classic action tropes and create a next level, bombastic score. Having an archetypal character (led by the iconic Liam Neeson), allowed Max to really dig into the storyline. Once Max had the thematic tapestry nailed down, the rest of the music flowed out. I spoke by phone with Max Aruj about these two films, their differences, and his career.
