They are more than job matchmakers-they are engines of opportunity and innovation, ensuring businesses have the skilled workers they need and communities have pathways to prosperity.rnrnWith new leadership, a new nonprofit structure, a new strategy, and a new brand, Greater Cleveland Works is reinventing its role - and wants you to better understand its work and the possibilities for collaboration.rnrnJoin Greater Cleveland Works CEO Michelle Rose as we dive into the critical role of this organization, the potential impact of federal funding instability, and why now-more than ever-we must advocate for the resources that build careers, strengthen industries, and future-proof our economy.

Giving Tuesday and Nonprofit Challenges In this week's episode of the Nonprofit NewsFeed, George Weiner, Chief Whaler of Whole Whale, and Nick Azulay, Senior Digital Strategy Manager at Whole Whale, dive into the aftermath of Giving Tuesday and the ongoing debate about OpenAI's nonprofit origins. Main Topics: Giving Tuesday Predictions and Economic Context: The team discusses their prediction for Giving Tuesday donations, hoping to surpass $3.5 billion, a hopeful 11% increase from 2023's $3.1 billion. Despite the lack of immediate data, they highlight positive economic indicators like cooled inflation, high consumer confidence, and strong stock market performance as promising signs for nonprofit fundraising. Elon Musk vs. OpenAI: A Legal Battle Over Nonprofit Integrity: Elon Musk has filed an injunction against OpenAI, challenging its transition from a nonprofit to a for-profit model, which he claims violates its original mission. The conversation touches on the broader implications for tech companies exploiting nonprofit status and the ethical considerations of such transitions. Cautionary Tales in Fundraising: Cleveland's Balloon Fest Disaster: The episode revisits the 1986 Balloon Fest by United Way of Greater Cleveland, a well-intentioned fundraiser that turned disastrous, emphasizing the importance of aligning fundraising efforts with an organization's mission and relevance rather than spectacle. Critical Insights: Economic Indicators: The current economic climate, with rising consumer spending and a robust stock market, suggests potential growth in charitable giving despite previous stagnation. Nonprofit Integrity: The legal scrutiny of OpenAI's nonprofit-to-profit transition raises questions about the ethics of leveraging nonprofit status for financial gain. Fundraising Strategy: The Cleveland Balloon Fest serves as a reminder to prioritize meaningful engagement over attention-grabbing stunts in fundraising efforts. Calls to Action: Nonprofits should assess their fundraising strategies to ensure alignment with their mission and relevance to their audience. Stakeholders in the nonprofit sector need to remain vigilant about the ethical implications of organizational transitions and funding models. Closing Thought: The episode concludes with a reflection on the importance of authenticity and integrity in the nonprofit sector, especially in times of economic uncertainty and rapid technological evolution. As the landscape of philanthropy continues to shift, organizations must adapt while staying true to their core values and mission.

At the age of 18, he got his first big break when he started touring internationally with Sammy Davis, Jr. Despite a skyrocketing music career, Rick traded his sticks for a badge. What followed was a 33-year career as a police officer in Greater Cleveland, with the last ten of those years as chief of police. As an organized crime historian, Rick Porrello's perspective is an intriguing one. He began writing his first book during family research into the murders of his grandfather and three uncles, all of whom, he learned, were mob leaders killed in Prohibition-era violence. The Rise and Fall of the Cleveland Mafia quickly became a regional favorite. His second book caught Hollywood's eye before it was published. Hollywood snapped up To Kill the Irishman—the War that Crippled the Mafia and turned it into the movie Kill the Irishman, starring Ray Stevenson, Vincent D'Onofrio, Christopher Walken, and Val Kilmer. Please enjoy this wide-ranging conversation where we talk about everything from being on tour with Sammy Davis Jr, becoming a police officer and eventually becoming the chief of police, researching his family's organized crime roots, to writing bestselling books that become movies. In today's episode, we discuss:·      Playing the drums for Sammy Davis Jr. ·      Why Rick became a police officer and his career trajectory.·      How and why, he became a police chief. ·      Why are we, as a culture, so fascinated with organized crime?·      Omerta. There's a module for that. Module name/project name: Geofield Directions Brief history How old: created in Feb 2021 by Christopher Martin (ccjjmartin), though recent releases are by Allan Chappell (generalredneck) Versions available: 1.0.1, compatible with Drupal ^8.8 ^9 || ^10 ^11 Maintainership Minimally maintained, Maintenance fixes only Security coverage Test coverage Documentation? Now your content display will include a link to get directions You can figure the text of the link, whether the link should open in a new tab, the magnification of the destination map, and more The module also includes token support, so you can dynamically include things like the name of the location in the link text I think the only downside I can see is that because this is implemented as a formatter, you have to choose the directions link OR a map, where I could foresee sites wanting to show both

What if all Clevelanders were guaranteed a job? And that job offered a salary suitable enough to provide for their families? As it turns out, the idea of a jobs guarantee gained momentum in the 1940s with President Franklin D. Roosevelt's Second Bill of Rights. Now, the City of Cleveland will become the first city in the nation to launch a $21 million Universal Basic Employment (UBE) pilot program. Put simply, it will provide 100 participants with a job guarantee of $50,000 for three years. It plans to launch in 2026.rnrnAs the second poorest major city in America, Cleveland is looking to reduce poverty and the need for public assistance by guaranteeing a well-paid job. As opposed to the more popular "Universal Basic Income" - made popular by former presidential candidate Andrew Yang - UBE works directly with employers to subsidize existing, or new wages for its employees.rnrnJoin the City Club as we hear from Councilwoman Stephanie Howse-Jones, Devin H. Cotten with Universal Basic Employment & Opportunity, and Ken Surratt with the United Way of Greater Cleveland on what exactly UBE is - and is not - and what we can expect to learn from Cleveland's UBE pilot program.

Rick Porrello: The Ballad of Danny Greene

Author Rick Porrello joins Tim to talk about his book that tells of story of the notorious and now legendary Danny Greene, who tried to take down the mafia in Cleveland in life, and may have done it in death. Rick was the chief of a suburban Cleveland police department, and over the years he has written a number of best-selling books about murder, the mafia and organized crime. The book we're going to talk about today was even turned into a major Hollywood motion picture. That book is, “To Kill the Irishman.” https://traffic.libsyn.com/forcedn/shapingopinion/Rick_Porrello_-_Ballad_of_Danny_Greene_auphonic.mp3 When most people think of the mafia, organized crime, gangsters, they have a few eras and places in mind. First, it may be the Prohibition Era from 1920 to 1933, where gangs made millions off of bootleg whiskey and alcohol, illegally, of course. And they left in their wake a trail of death and blood in the streets of Chicago, New York and other cities. Mobsters like Al Capone and John Dillinger became larger than life celebrities for a time. And they became legends through newspaper and media coverage, books and film. When you think of the mafia, you may have in your mind the world of Don Corleone and his family at the center of the Godfather films, or all those Martin Scorsese movies about the underworld. Any number of books and documentaries documented the realities, the myths and the stories of La Cosa Nostra – the mafia – and organized crime figures. Hardly ever, however, do you hear about how some of these stories center on places like Pittsburgh, Detroit, Buffalo or Cleveland. But at its peak, it was everywhere there was money to be made, and these were some of the cities helping them make it. And yet, in the end, it may have been one story out of Cleveland that changed everything. Our guest today has an interesting perspective on all of this. He was in law enforcement for decades. He also had a unique family history. Links Rick Porrello's Website The Rise and Fall of the Cleveland Mafia, by Rick Porrello (Amazon) To Kill the Irishman, by Rick Porrello (Amazon) Rick Porrello on Facebook Dedication This episode is dedicated to Ray Stevenson, who played Danny Greene in the "Kill the Irishman" motion picture. Ray died suddenly and unexpectedly earlier in 2023. About this Episode's Guest Rick Porrello Author, drummer, and former police chief Rick Porrello has a knack for writing books that attract interest from filmmakers. Hollywood snapped up To Kill the Irishman—the War that Crippled the Mafia before it was even published, and turned it into the movie Kill the Irishman, starring Ray Stevenson, Vincent D'Onofrio, Christopher Walken, and Val Kilmer. A motion picture based on Superthief — A Master Burglar, the Mafia, and the Biggest Bank Burglary in U.S. History is in development. Both books have also generated documentaries. Rick's first career was as a jazz drummer. At the age of 18, he got his first big break when he started touring internationally with Sammy Davis, Jr. Despite a skyrocketing music career, Rick decided to trade his sticks for a badge, which had been his dream since childhood. The Rise and Fall of the Cleveland Mafia quickly became a regional favorite and has endured as a backlist title. When he isn't hammering out his next book, co-authoring a screenplay, serving as a consulting or executive producer, or drumming with a number of bands, Porrello gives presentations on his books and on his writing and publishing journey.
