Federal Reserve Chair Jay Powell has made it clear that he’s laser-focused on bringing inflation back down to the central bank’s target rate of 2% annually. But why is reaching that specific number such a big deal? And where did the 2% target come from? On the show today, David Wilcox, economist at the Peterson Institute for International Economics and director of U.S. economic research at Bloomberg Economics, explains why it's important for central banks to have a target inflation rate in the first place, how the Fed landed on 2% in particular and whether that target rate should be lifted in today's economy. Plus, some monetary policy pro tips. In the news, the Supreme Court considered a legal theory that had gained traction with Republicans and kicked it to the curb. We’ll get into what that might mean for future elections. And, an EV company went the SPAC route, and it didn’t turn out well. Later, listeners sound off on “Star Wars” and a Rubik’s Cube TV series. Plus, a self-described rum nerd makes us smarter about the misunderstood spirit. Here’s everything we talked about today: “Fed’s Powell, in testimony, says inflation fight has ‘long way to go”‘ from Reuters “Should the Fed raise its 2% inflation target?” from Marketplace “Alternatives to the Fed's 2 percent inflation target” from the Brookings Institution “Of Kiwis and Currencies: How a 2% Inflation Target Became Global Economic Gospel” from The New York Times “Limitless: The Federal Reserve Takes on a New Age of Crisis” by Jeanna Smialek Supreme Court rejects “independent state legislature” theory from Politico “The Incredible Story of the Lifeguard Who Won the Biggest Surf Competition in the World” from GQ “As Lordstown immolates, SPAC deals that didn't go to zero feel like the exception” from TechCrunch “As Lordstown Motors Dies, Lordstown's EV Business Survives” from The Wall Street Journal “‘The Speed Cubers’ takes on the world of competitive Rubik’s Cube solving” from Mashable Become a new Investor or rejoin today and your donation will be matched! https://support.marketplace.org/smart-sn

Chris is appalled that anti-CRT rhetoric is turning into actual book bans, and Liz wept through Speed Cubers, a sweet documentary on Netflix. Then, inspired by current events, we dig into the complicated process of making a wedding guest list and the referendum on the state of your friendships it can become. How do you decide who gets an invite, especially when you're getting married in your late 30s? What does an invite convey to a new friend or a childhood friend you haven't seen in ten years? We also talk about the younger cousin of the wedding invitation -- the holiday card -- and the strange opportunity it provides for an annual assessment of your friendships. Plus, our top five TV characters of all time. How many of Chris's are from The Wire? There's only one way to find out. Note: This episode was recorded before the murder of Christina Yuna Lee in New York City; we will have more to say about this in our next episode. We hope you're taking care and being extra kind to yourselves. ❤️ facebook.com/topfivepod Instagram: @topfivepod Twitter: @thetopfivepod Art by Colin Turnbull (colinpturnbull.com) Music by Origami Pigeon --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/topfivepod/support

Brother E introduces Drew to the 1985 cult classic “Re-Animator,” which somehow eluded his much-too-young viewing in the VHS era. Watching with modern eyes and in high-definition does this movie no favors. Also, it’s super campy until it’s super rapey. Mid-show Drew introduces a new bit! Housekeeping starts at 1:06:50 where Drew reminisces about Oasis, 21 Bridges, and Speed Cubers. Plus Drew drops the funniest joke-bomb of the year. Are you ready for this? It's time to rethink everything you think you know about "screens" and how kids learn. We're making a case for why YouTube beats a science textbook, why PBS Kids is can be more than a pre-dinner pacifier, and why even Marvel movies (yes, Marvel movies) are worthy of being a central part of your homeschool. We hope you'll feel inspired (and feel the freedom!) to ditch your lesson plans and enjoy some great shows with the kids--because this is totally amazing and totally real learning. In our third episode Aaron James and Andrew Dickson welcome producer turned Oscar short-listed director Sue Kim, to the Mt. Freelance podcast. Sue Kim has spent her career as a print, commercial film, digital and experiential producer working for ad agencies and brands up and down the West Coast. But when she took her son to a Rubik's Cube competition, she knew she had to take the reins and direct her first film. “The Speed Cubers” is a wonderful short documentary about a relationship within the world of competitive speed cubing that will make you cry. Sue will take us through how she quit her job to get the film made and what working with Netflix to bring the film to life was like. Sue is full of insights and ideas on how to successfully create the freelance career of your dreams and shares some important advice for fellow freelancers on how to get hired again and again. Wondering what Mt. Freelance is? It's the online course and community that helps freelancers in the creative industry get the work they really want, charge what they are worth and build the freelance business they dream of. Co-founders Aaron and Andrew end each episode by answering a listener question about freelance. The Mt. Freelance podcast is hand-crafted by the producers, mixers and sound designers of Digital One, right here in Portland Oregon, and sponsored by Stumptown Coffee.
Shortlisted for the 2021 Oscar® in the Best Documentary Film - Short Form, THE SPEED CUBERS drops us into the frenetic world of Speed Cubing. Cubing is the competitive sport of solving a Rubik's Cube in mere seconds that has grown into a worldwide phenomenon in recent years. For nearly a decade in the sport, Feliks Zemdegs from Australia, has reigned unchallenged as the king of cubers, the greatest of all time. That is, until now. The cubing world was stunned when an unknown challenger named Max Park from California took home the Gold medal in 2017 and emerged onto the global stage. Since then, Max's rise to the top has been swift and steady, save for one obstacle in his way: Feliks. The two have been trading wins and world records steadily, neither one able to truly dominate while the other still competes. But rather than developing into a bitter rivalry, Feliks and Max have instead grown their competitive relationship into a tender yet complicated friendship. THE SPEED CUBERS finds Max and Feliks on the threshold of another World Championship, both driven to win but both rooting for each other's success. Director Sue Kim stops by to talk about her high-energy, and warm-hearted look into the feverishly competitive but refreshingly idyllic world of Speed Cubers.

Obsessive game competition documentaries. Sarah Watt, Jeremy Downing and William Chen discuss the Netflix+ distributed The Speed Cubers and The King of Kong (2007). We begin by discussing the despicable qualities of the people featured in The King of Kong, particularly Billy Mitchell, and the under-dog qualities of Steve Wiebe. We then talk about the filmmaking and crafting of The King of Kong, particularly the areas where artistic license has been taken, and highlighting the characters of Brian Kuh and Steve Sanders. We move the conversation into The Speed Cubers, highlighting the difference in spirit between the two films, with the more recent film being far kinder than the harsher older film - connecting to our previous episode on Catfish and Tickled. We unpack the focus of the film The Speed Cubers, especially around its lack of focus on speed cubing competitions, with a focus on the relationship between Max and Feliks. We then discuss the films in comparison to other documentary films and documentary series, such as Spellbound, Wordplay, Double Dare, Jesus Camp, Jeffrey Epstein: Filthy Rich, Capturing the Friedmans, Three Identical Strangers, The Wolfpack, The Act of Killing, The Last Dance, Samsara and Koyaanisqatsi, particularly in structure and crafting, genre and place within the wider documentary film landscape, and the change in distribution style, between classic cinema release and Netflix. Our conversation then moves to the films' focus on the autism spectrum, discussing Max Park, the potential of Steve Wiebe being on the spectrum, with further connections to the Netflix docu-series Love on the Spectrum. We finish our conversation by considering both films as commentary on modern times, particularly each film representing two different philosophies around how to perceive of the world, with The King of Kong being a potential allegory for America's journey over the past decade, with The Speed Cubers being a story of friendship, community and hope for young people, regardless of nationality.

This week Dennis & Adam have so many pieces of bread and only a two slotted toaster. Luckily they have nothing but time and a wide assortment of butters, and jams to lather on each slice of toast. First up, Adam walks you through the downfall of a deadly assassin in Deathstroke: Knights & Dragons The Movie. Next up, Dennis talks about a smarty pants who loses his mind when he gets a grade lower than an A on a high school report in Dismissed. After that, Adam hides from two of the most feared men in Los Angeles right before they meet their match in The Tax Collector. Up next, Dennis warns us about a malfunctioning toy that goes on a killing spree in the Child's Play reboot. Then, Adam explains what happens when a man who gets pickled stars a pickling empire 100 years later in An American Pickle. Lastly, both Toasters wrap things up while talking about two competitors becoming the best of friends while facing off against one another on the competitive Rubik's Cube circuit in The Speed Cubers. Let us know if we persuaded you to watch any of these movies. Or if you want to tell us that we were wrong about one of our reviews. If you're anything like us, the months and months of endless quarantining might have you contemplating taking an axe to the people you've been stuck inside with. If only for a chance to do something new for a change. Fortunately, we have a good way too let off some of that steam: a whole bunch of violent slasher movies. By request of Patreon subscriber Brian Fowler, we're going to be taking a look at director Adam Green's Hatchet series, the over-the-top throwbacks to the most excessive extremes of '80s slasher movies. None of us have seen any of them, so we're flying blind.
The best part of your Monday morning has arrived: the latest podcast of the last broadcast From The Basement! Jason and Shawn dig into the new Canadian serial-killer thriller The Silencing, which hits VOD and Digital this Friday. The film, from director Robin Pront, stars Annabelle Wallis as a small-town sheriff, and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau as a reformed hunter on the trail of a killer of women. It's dark and gritty stuff, but is it ideal viewing if you want a late-summer chill? Stick with us! And stick with us you shall, as The Basement boys take on a slew of movies old and new. They touch on such favourites as Gravity, Jaws 3 and Echoes of Fear, and take on newer -- or new to them -- releases like John Henry starring Terry Crews, Hollows Grove featuring the great Lance Herniksen, and Frankenfish... starring, well, Frankenfish! Oh, and they do battle with recent streaming series The Speed Cubers and Inside the World's Toughest Prisons. If this doesn't intrigue you to push play and enjoy, nothing will. So just do it, like the old shoe ad used to say. You won't be disappointed!

The Speed Cubers is a documentary on the lives of speedcubing champions Max Park and Feliks Zemdegs. Directed by Sue Kim, the film premiered on July 29, 2020, on Netflix.Speed Cubing, which is the competitive sport of solving a Rubik's Cube in mere seconds, has grown into a worldwide phenomenon in recent years.
