Infamous Irish-American gangster Danny Greene declared war on the Italian mafia and he nearly won. Greene escaped death countless times and his reputation as "unkillable" grew with each bullet and blast he dodged. His son, who is now a Cleveland city councilman, says his father was fearless. But Greene's luck finally ran out in October 1977. In part 3 of this series, 19 News investigator Kelly Kennedy takes you through the final moments of Greene's life and explains how an eyewitness with a special talent helped police identify the Irishman's killer.
In this episode, 19 News investigator Kelly Kennedy dives into part two of the story of Danny Greene, the notorious Irish-American gangster who ignited a brutal turf war with the Mayfield Road Mob. Journey back to when Cleveland was "Bomb City, USA" and discover how the death of the city's last don and one fearless Irish mobster helped topple Italian organized crime in America.
Danny Greene wasn't just any mobster. The Cleveland union president-turned-gangster was a force of nature; a wild card in the deck of organized crime, blurring the lines between hero and villain, with a reputation that grew as fast as the explosions he left in his wake. Despite surviving several assassination attempts, Green was ultimately killed in a car bombing in 1977 during a time when Cleveland was known as "Bomb City, USA." In this episode, 19 News investigator Kelly Kennedy kicks off our mob series with the thrilling tale of the infamous Irishman who took down the Italian mafia in a way he never intended.

Danny Greene is a legend in his time, as he was prominent in his Irish community as the one who took on the mafia in Cleveland during the 60's and 70's. Cleveland was dubbed as 'Bomb City USA' during the bombings of 1976 and Danny was right in the thick of it. Kill the Irishman is a based on the true story of his life and dealings with the Mafia. The story starts with his clash with his union boss, and then moving onto bigger fish by starting the Irish Mafia in Cleveland. He was a true force to be reckoned with. This film is not a documentary but a portrayal of how it really happened. He certainly had the luck of the Irish on his side as the mob tried to kill him many times. Directed and Written by Jonathan Hensleigh. Starring famous actors Val Kilmer, Ray Stephenson, Christopher Walken, and Vincent D'Onofrio as the leads.

Author Rick Porrello joins Tim to talk about his book that tells of story of the notorious and now legendary Danny Greene, who tried to take down the mafia in Cleveland in life, and may have done it in death. Rick was the chief of a suburban Cleveland police department, and over the years he has written a number of best-selling books about murder, the mafia and organized crime. The book we're going to talk about today was even turned into a major Hollywood motion picture. That book is, “To Kill the Irishman.” https://traffic.libsyn.com/forcedn/shapingopinion/Rick_Porrello_-_Ballad_of_Danny_Greene_auphonic.mp3 When most people think of the mafia, organized crime, gangsters, they have a few eras and places in mind. First, it may be the Prohibition Era from 1920 to 1933, where gangs made millions off of bootleg whiskey and alcohol, illegally, of course. And they left in their wake a trail of death and blood in the streets of Chicago, New York and other cities. Mobsters like Al Capone and John Dillinger became larger than life celebrities for a time. And they became legends through newspaper and media coverage, books and film. When you think of the mafia, you may have in your mind the world of Don Corleone and his family at the center of the Godfather films, or all those Martin Scorsese movies about the underworld. Any number of books and documentaries documented the realities, the myths and the stories of La Cosa Nostra – the mafia – and organized crime figures. Hardly ever, however, do you hear about how some of these stories center on places like Pittsburgh, Detroit, Buffalo or Cleveland. But at its peak, it was everywhere there was money to be made, and these were some of the cities helping them make it. And yet, in the end, it may have been one story out of Cleveland that changed everything. Our guest today has an interesting perspective on all of this. He was in law enforcement for decades. He also had a unique family history. A motion picture based on Superthief — A Master Burglar, the Mafia, and the Biggest Bank Burglary in U.S. History is in development. Both books have also generated documentaries. Traditional markets are trading relatively firm; we had a decent close on Friday with things unchanged on today's open. Crypto closed well going into the weekend but has sold off since along with $hitcoins, and it seems like the season is reaching a lull, but we likely haven't seen the end just yet. One of the major talking points has been the amount of Ethereum burned during all of the trading; It has been deflationary for a while now with all of this activity, and there are now concerns and speculation around the long term effects. We have the CPI number coming in this week. If the number misses then we could see a sell off, but if the number is lower than expectation it could be a less notable event. We are still in a tepid state with NFTs; some major sales have still happened with things like Azuki, and Cryptopunks are hanging out around 50 eth with Apes in the 47-48 range. There was a major headline going around where 14 apes were sold and immediately swapped for $PEPE, which is not doing well currently.@punk9059 talked about a difference from NFTs vs Stocks/bond trading, where the former plays into momentum and the trend of the moment. The strategy and practice may be similar but the foundation and influence are very different. Something like 80% of the loans that have gone out through BLEND have been recalled back already, take that as you will. If you are trading the $hitcoins, it's best to try and find something with a story at the very least. The action of these coins is rapid and unforgiving. Protect your funds and as always do not deploy capital that you cannot afford to lose. We were joined by @dannygreene & @meebstew to talk about everything @MeebitsNFTs. He has done art for the past 10 years, and describes himself as "just an artist" and a late starter, although you might disagree looking at his beautiful work. The Rug Radio Membership Pass was one of his first mints ever, and now he is minting a piece for the Rug Radio audience. That is what we love to see and the type of story we hope to replicate. His style is NeoFauvism, which was also our code today for stubs and rewards. Fauvism was an early artistic movement that started in France and is attributed to the larger modern art category. Around the early 20th century people started experimenting by taking the realism out of the art and creating from their own views and perspectives with colors and livery. Fauvism sparked other movements like cubism and other really colorful styles; It broke the tendency of art to be naturalistic and represented in a true to life lens. Yagamii intends to combine modern contemporary art style with an appreciation for art history through his work. Yagami is also putting together a team to promote and contribute to the NeoFauvism style. It is set to be a curation in collaboration with Foundation that will highlight the style and the group of the artists that are creating using it!GM! Hosted on Acast. In this episode, I sit down with Danny Greene, the general manager of the MeebitsDAO. We have a wide-ranging conversation about the significance of NFTs, the analogies that can be used to onboard new users into the NFT space, and of course, we also focused on Meebits in particular. I really like the MeebitsDAO initiative in favor of an open metaverse, so if you'd like to learn more about the metaverse and how you can start participating in this space you should definitely give this one a listen. The Meebits are 20,000 unique 3D voxel characters, created by a custom generative algorithm, then registered on the Ethereum blockchain. The original 9000 Meebits were available for purchase through a Dutch-style auction starting from 2.5 ETH. The remaining NFTs were distributed to holders of CryptoPunks as well as Autoglyphs. A simple gas fee transaction could be used to redeem a Meebit with a punk or glyph. Because of its rarity as well as scarcity, the collection had topped the charts as well as sustained constant sales. With $127 million in sales volume, this became the 7th all-time top collection in just four months. At least ten Meebits have indeed been sold for over a million dollars. 833: Golf is generally not in the same conversation as Crypto Currency. And a lot of golfers may never have even heard of, or understand NFTs, or nonfungible tokens. But at the end of 2021 Mike Dudas had the idea of creating a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) for golf enthusiasts, with the ultimate goal of raising enough money to buy a golf course through the sale of NFTs. This would be a typical country club, but based in blockchain. So LinksDAO was born and sixteen days later they raised $11 Million dollars through the sale of a collection of NFTs. Our guests on this episode are two of the original founding members, Jim Daily and Adam Besvinick who share the story, educate us on NFTs and blockchain technology, what is Web3.0, and explain how you too can get involved with LinksDAO. was an American mobster and associate of the Cleveland mobster John Nardi during the 1970s gang war for the city's criminal operations. Competing gangsters set off more than 36 bombs, most attached to cars, in murder attempts, many successful. Greene had gained power first in a local chapter of the International Longshoremen's Association, where he was elected president in the early 1960s. He pushed into Cleveland rackets and began competing with the Italian American Mafia for control of the city. He set up his own group called the Celtic Club, complete with enforcers.
Kill the Irishman chronicles the life and turbulent times of Danny Greene, a tough Irishman who gets involved with the Cleveland mafia. As far as gangster flicks go, it's not half-bad; but that also means it's generally half-good. That's because it's a relatively unfocused look at a rather complicated and violent life. It honestly feels like there's a good 30 minutes of connective tissue missing from the movie. Hence why Kill the Irishman is never equal to the sum of its parts. Sure, we get appearances from great actors like Val Kilmer, Christopher Walken, and Paul Sorvino. They are just given nothing to do. Greene, who's played by admirably by Ray Stevenson, had an incredibly compelling story to tell. It's a shame that director and screenwriter Jonathan Hensleigh didn't quite know how to do it. This is probably why it never gained much of a following and tanked at the box office. It earned a measly $1.2 million on a budget of $12 million. Despite all that, Kill the Irishman is not without its merits. And fans of gangster movies, like myself, will find elements to enjoy. For example, Greene punching in the face of a biker who hosts parties at decibel levels discourteous to the neighbors. Honestly, he had it coming. Now sit back, blow the caps off a couple Conway's Irish Ales from Great Lakes Brewing Co., and check under your car before firing up the engine! I, the Thunderous Wizard (@WriterTLK), Capt. Danny Greene's career really, a-hem, exploded once he turned to crimes of the organized variety. Source: Danny Greene. Wikipedia. Last accessed on July 19, 2021. Danny Greene - Wikipedia
It was Feb 1974, and Patty Hearst - granddaughter of publishing icon William Randolph Hearst was kidnapped by a group called the Symbionese Liberation Army. Two months later, Patty was on bank video, armed with a machine gun assisting the very group who'd kidnapped her to rob a bank. She'd announced earlier that her name was being changed to Tania and she was joining the fight of her kidnappers. The country had never seen anything like this, and followed their exploits for the next 14 months. Two years later on the other side of the country, Cleveland Oh has earned the nickname Bomb City USA. There's a war going on in Cleveland between the mob, run by James Licavoli - the head of the Cleveland Crime family after John Scalish died. The "King of Murray Hill" was also at war with an Irish Mobster named Danny Greene - who wanted control of the local rackets. Until violent retribution caught up with him and Danny Greene was blown to bits. I'm going to take a dive into both these cases. It was a crazy decade for crime gripping the news and I'm going to examine the local connection of my father and his partner's case work to the Cleveland Mob. Good morning, RVA! It’s 29 °F and gross out there. It’s raining or sleeting or snowing or some combination of all three, and the forecast says you should expect that to continue until at least tomorrow. We are still under a Winter Storm Warning until 7:00 AM tomorrow, and the National Weather Service at Wakefield says “a crippling ice accumulation is expected across the hardest hit areas from the previous system.”As you’d expect, all the normal thing are closed: schools, local governments, and VCU. The City has even posted a list of steep streets preemptively closed due to potential ice build up. Basically, this is serious biz, you shouldn’t leave your home if you don’t have to, and, if you must, plan to take it way, way slow.Water coolerAs of this morning, the Virginia Department of Health reports 2,284 new positive cases of the coronavirus in the Commonwealthand 38 new deaths as a result of the virus. VDH reports 289 new cases in and around Richmond (Chesterfield: 102, Henrico: 126, and Richmond: 61). Since this pandemic began, 723 people have died in the Richmond region. The seven-day averages of both cases and deaths continues to fall while the seven-day average of hospitalizations continues to stay pretty flat. I continue to not know what that means.Yesterday, the Governor did announce the new statewide COVID-19 vaccine call center, which you can reach at 1.877.VAX.IN.VA (1.877.829.4682). The new call center can answer basic vaccine questions and help you or a loved one fill out the new statewide pre-registration form. Local health district call centers do still exist, though, so if you’ve got a burning question about a specific local thing, you may want to start there (the Richmond and Henrico Health Districts call center number is 804.205.3501). Ana Ley, a reporter with the Virginian Pilot, says 69 of the 750 call center staff speak Spanish, and, as of this morning, it does look like the new pre-registration form has been translated into Spanish by an actual human, rather than relying on the Google Translate bot. One other update: The search to see if you’re in the State’s system is no longer case sensitive. Iterative progress!Unfortunately, today’s gross weather has cancelled a bunch of regional vaccination events, too. If you had an appointment today, check out this page on the Richmond and Henrico Health District’s website and this page on the Chesterfield Health District’s website to learn more about when you should expect to have your appointment rescheduled.I don’t know what to make of this blossoming relationship between Councilmember Jones, who’s running for the 69th House District seat, and the City’s 8th District Councilmember Trammell. Here they are out front of the CVS on Walmsley demanding that that location begin vaccinating individuals, reports Sabrina Moreno and Chris Suarez in the Richmond Times-Dispatch. Unpopular opinion, maybe, but the Walmsley location (4715 Walmsley Boulevard) is pretty tough to get to unless you have a car. Yeah, it sits right on the #86 bus line, but that bus only comes once an hour—which means lots of waiting either before or after vaccination appointments for seniors. The Forest Hill location (5001 Forest Hill Avenue), is, undeniably, in a more affluent neighborhood, but at least it’s accessible by a 30-minute bus route and a 15-minute bus route (the #20 and #2). Plus it’s within walking distance from the apartments along Westover Hills Boulevard near George Wythe High School. As Councilmember Trammell says, “We represent some of the poorest of the poor…They don’t have cars, they can’t drive. They’re elderly. They don’t want to cross the river.” At some point, I’d love to see our City’s leadership, planners, advocates, everybody, move past the idea that bus service just existing is good enough. Critical and essential services should be located along and accessible by useful bus service.Density! Mike Platania at Richmond BizSense reports that City Council has granted a special use permit for a co-housing project on Arthur Ashe Boulevard. This project will bring 148 homes to what is currently a parking lot. Co-housing means shared living space, but it also means rent around $800 per month. Also! Check out this amazing quote from an actual REAL ESTATE DEVELOPER: "I worry that the parking decks that I’m building will become an albatross around my neck in 15 years…With Uber, Lyft, and scooters—whatever it is, there’s a lot of pressure being taken off the need to own a car. All these neighborhoods are walkable; everything is going in that direction.” Yes, yes it is!Assuming folks have power this evening, here’s a Zoom worth hopping on to: STAY RVA’s monthly STAY CHAT will host Genevieve Siegel-Hawley and Danny Greene for a discussion on “the history, the legacy, and the current state of segregation/integration in our schools.” The event is free, but you need to go sign up on the Eventbrite. If you have time, your optional homework ahead of the chat is to listen to this episode of the Revisionist History podcast about Brown v. Board of Education. This morning’s longreadThe Nightmare ShareThis is a story about a horrible roommate, but, really, it’s a story about a housing crisis.New York roommate stories often begin with a kind of claustrophobic, reluctant symbiosis: Two people, linked solely by necessity, now also have to share the same bathroom. Here, finding a place to live is so notoriously difficult, the hunt so mythologically cutthroat, that the parties tend also to be united in desperation. Agreements are forged hastily via text message, in the DMs of third-party apps, as last-minute promises. Owners, renters, subletters, sub-subletters, Airbnb hosts, and Craigslist couch surfers alike learn to size one another up in relation to their own needs; how red the flags appear often depends on how broke you are.If you’d like your longread to show up here, go chip in a couple bucks on the ol’ Patreon.Picture of the DayForeshadowing.
Irish Americans found themselves on all sides of the law in the late 19th and 20th centuries. A life of crime tempted some who lived hardscrabble lives in the Angle and the near West Side. The Triangle, McCart Street, and Cheyenne Gangs stopped at petty crime, though the Cheyennes were caught up in the newspaper circulation wars of the 1910s, culminating in the death of a former newspaper boy in 1914. Legendary characters such as Blackjack McGinty and Shimmy Patton grew up in the same milieu but made their livelihoods and reputations in bootlegging and gambling. A few decades later, Danny Greene embroiled himself in a civil war between mob factions in Cleveland and "lived by the bomb and died by the bomb." --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Written and researched by Abby Saunders Transcript: Hurstories Script ABBY: I’m your host, Abby Saunders, ready to tell you all about Frank “Bolo” Dovishaw, his undercover gambling ring, and his unfortunate demise. First thing’s first – have you heard of the mafia? I think that a lot of people stereotype the mafia into a general group… criminals. The mafia is more like a family, though! No, literally. Mafias from around the world are most often run by groups of families, kind of like a ‘family business.’ Just like fathers in the farming industry pass down farming traditions to their sons, fathers in the mafia pass down mafia traditions to their sons. Boys are taught skills specific to running the business, and girls are taught how to be inconspicuous and lay low. Mafia members become like family members. It is not unusual to find men from different families acting brotherly to their business partners. Also, it is not uncommon to kill family members that act up in the Mafia. This idea will pop up later on, so, stay tuned. Just like in other bureaucratic business, there are leaders and followers. Mafias are typically hierarchal, with a general, boss-like position at the top of the chain, and then a bunch of levels below him. Mafias, in some way or another, exist all over the world. The most popular mafias originated in Italy… and more specifically… Sicily. One popular mafia that originated in Sicily and then migrated to the United States is the Cosa Nostra group. This group settled in New York, but then spread to surrounding cities along the Eastern coast of the country. Some major cities in the north east region of the United States where the mafia operates are Buffalo, Pittsburgh, and Cleveland. Interestingly enough, though, the city directly in the middle of all of these 3 cities, Erie Pennsylvania, had no major mafia activity until the 1950s. Even when the mob came to Erie, though, it was slight and almost insignificant compared to the major criminals and con men of the time[1]. Now, since mafias were on the rise in the United States, the federal law enforcement agencies were busy chasing and arresting various leaders from all over the East coast. This happened especially in the 1960s, 70s, and 80s. When a mafia leader is taken out, their section, well, family, may or may not fall. It is very difficult to count how many mafia groups there are in the United States for this reason[2]. Our story starts and ends in Erie, with Frank “Bolo” Dovishaw: one of the most recognized organized crime leaders in Erie, Pennsylvania. Now, you might be wondering why the hell I just explained what mafias are for 2 minutes, even though our main character today was not a member. Here is why: Dovishaw acted as if he were a member of the mafia. But in order for you to see this, you must know what he did to deserve the title: an Erie Goodfella. Picture Erie in the 1950s and 60s. It is a smaller city in the North West corner of Pennsylvania, right next to Lake Erie. There were neighborhoods full of immigrants and past-generation Americans alike, but one neighborhood that stood out was Little Italy. It is located between 12th street and 24th street, with an eastern boundary at Sassafras Street and a western boundary around Cranberry Street. Little Italy is like its own little self-contained town. There were barber shops, stores, churches, schools, and even funeral homes. With all of these good businesses, though, come some pretty illegal ones. There were many criminals in Erie in the 1900s; heck, there still are[3]! Our story starts in 1960 when Frank Dovishaw worked at Dee Cigar Store. On December 10th, 1960, Dovishaw was arrested for burglarizing the store. According to a newspaper article, around $7,000 worth of checks and cash were stolen. Dovishaw had worked at the cigar store for about a year and a half, and he was the main suspect. Although he tried to implicate a couple other individuals, Dovishaw was inevitably found to be the prime burglar. Multiple thousands of dollars’ worth of stolen goods were hidden and buried in a metal box by Dovishaw in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Dovishaw was only 24 years old when this happened[4]. Now, since organized crime was still at a low in Erie, smaller criminals were able to flourish…and then, sometimes, inevitably fall. For example, in 1954, Erie’s mayor, Thomas Flatley, was arrested for corruption, abuse of power, and illegal gambling. After hearing the allegations, he pleaded guilty to charges of conspiracy and for violating his oath of office. Flatley later resigned and faced jail time, along with multiple fines[5]. A lot of the early organized crime in Erie dealt with gambling and sports betting. Frank Dovishaw was the go-to guy for this. He had everyone in the city working for him. “In local shops, factories, and pubs throughout the city, old ladies bet pennies, kids traded nickels, and laborers put down dollars on a chance to walk away with the daily take.” Dovishaw and his partner Ray Ferritto conducted their business all around Erie county. They tried to stay out of Little Italy out of fear that their close friends and family members would find out. They had so many individuals wrapped around their fingers and doing their betting, from police officers to children. Ferritto ran number rackets all across the United States, not just in Erie. He was arrested and spent time in prison for it, too! He did time 2,000 miles away from Pennsylvania in a state penitentiary in Chino, California. Ray Ferritto even killed people. There was a “mob war” when the Irish Mob, led by Danny Greene, moved in on a Cleveland mob family. The Cleveland group was run by ‘Jack White’ Licavoli and Angelo ‘Big Ange’ Lonardo.’ Over 40 car bombs were involved in the mob war, but not much success was gained. After some time, the Cleveland mafia asked Ferritto to step in and finish the job against Danny Greene. He finished it. The numbers racket sports betting went on for multiple years with Frank Dovishaw at the head. Thousands of dollars were made, and many Erie residents either gained or lost money throughout this time period. One thing to keep in mind about mafias and mafia-like groups is that the members rarely call the police. If something weird happens, the members just handle it themselves. January 3rd, 1983 started off like any other day. Dovishaw and Ferritto made their usual rounds around the city and took bets. It was a Monday, and the Dallas Cowboys were playing the Minnesota Vikings. Dovishaw always ate meatball subs from Damore’s on Mondays, and that is exactly what he did. Ray Ferritto dropped off Dovishaw at his home on West 21st street around 6pm. When he was home, Dovishaw would always call his employees to gather information about the day. He would never write anything down or leave any messages. If anything was documented, it could be used as evidence. When Dovishaw was not home to answer the phone, multiple other lines in other houses would ring until someone answered the call. So, when Dovishaw got home that Monday evening, he was supposed to make some calls. Around 7pm, Ferritto called Dovishaw to catch up on the night. The phone call went to the next person… and the next person… and the next person; Dovishaw did not answer the multiple calls that Ferritto made to him. Ferritto wondered if he was with one of his “gypsy strippers,” if the police caught him, or if he was just laying low for the night. His curiosity got the best of him because Ferritto ended up driving to Dovishaw’s house to see what was the matter. He knew that the police had been investigating Cosa Nostra for the past few decades, so that was high on the radar for Ferritto. Ferritto arrived at Dovishaw’s house on West 21st Street. Since the house was his late mother’s, Dovishaw lived alone. Ferritto searched the whole house and ended up in the basement. There, he saw his friend and colleague dead. Dovishaw was bound by his mother’s old dresses, his hands were cut off, and he was shot in the head execution style[6]. Here is the newspaper article that was published on January 5th, 1983: “Frank ‘Bolo’ Dovishaw, reputed head of one of the largest illegal gambling operations in northwestern Pennsylvania, was found shot to death in the basement of his West Side home Tuesday night. Authorities said Dovishaw had been shot once in the head. Police refused comment on the shooting, except to say they were treating it as a homicide. It was believed that Dovishaw’s killer or killers may have fled in his 1979 green Cadillac. As a result, Erie police asked officers in Pennsylvania and nearby states to be on the lookout for the car with Pennsylvania license plate 9U7-469 and hold its occupants for questioning in the death[7]” ABBY: That is all for this episode of Hurstories!
