Are your construction profits disappearing despite winning bids at 20% margins? Do you know what your projects are actually costing you? In this episode of The Construction MF'ers podcast, Scott Peper, our CEO and Founder, sits down with Lisa Robles and Stacie Gaffrey, CPAs from Saltmarsh, Cleaveland & Gund, to reveal why most contractors are missing critical financial insights that determine success or failure. This episode is more than catching fraud in your construction business (though that's covered too)—and is about transforming how you understand your business finances. Lisa and Stacie explore why your WIP schedule matters more than your income statement, how overhead calculations make or break profitability, and why that concrete contractor who built a multi-million dollar business through hard work might still be making uninformed decisions that cost him thousands. Here's what you'll learn:

How the US asylum process fails to protect against claims of gender-based violence. Through eyewitness accounts of closed-court proceedings and powerful testimony from women who have sought asylum in the United States because of severe assaults and death threats by intimate partners and/or gang members, Private Violence: Latin American Women and the Struggle for Asylum (NYU Press, 2024) examines how immigration laws and policies shape the lives of Latin American women who seek safety in the United States. Carol Cleaveland and Michele Waslin describe the women's histories prior to crossing the border, and the legal strategies they use to convince Immigration Judges that rape and other forms of "private violence" should merit asylum - despite laws built on Cold War era assumptions that persecution occurs in the public sphere by state actors. Private Violence provides much-needed recommendations for incorporating a gender-based lens in the asylum process. The authors demonstrate how policy changes across Presidential administrations have made it difficult for survivors of "private violence" to qualify for asylum. Private Violence paints a damning portrait of America's broken asylum system. This volume illustrates the difficulties experienced by Latin American women who rely on this broken system for protection in the United States. It also illuminates women's resilience and the determination of immigration attorneys to reshape asylum law. Learn more about your ad choices. Many clinicians start their careers feeling unprepared to navigate the job market. In a lot of professional groups, I've noticed a skepticism towards contract companies, recruiters, and staffing agencies simply because many people working in school settings don't know who they can trust. If you've ever had a recruiter awkwardly slide into your DMs or advertise in your online group without permission, you might be feeling some of that skepticism yourself. There is an art and a science to navigating career placements, job searching, and working with recruiters and staffing agencies. Having this skill set can be a game changer when it comes to finding fulfilling work. Recruiters can be a huge asset if you know how to work with them and if you can spot a good one. That's why I invited Ryan Cleaveland to episode 126 of the De Facto Leaders podcast to give you a peek behind the curtain of staffing and recruiting. Ryan is the CEO of Spotter Staffing (https://www.spotterstaffing.com/), a company that helps connect schools with highly qualified therapists and special education teachers. After over two decades in corporate staffing across multiple industries, he started Spotter Staffing with his best friend, Ryan Allen, COO. They wanted to provide staffing for an ethical and selfless industry, so that's what inspired them to focus on connecting special education professionals with school districts. In this conversation, we discuss:✅How does staffing and recruiting work? What are the different types of contracts and employment options? ✅How can you tell if you're working with a qualified recruiter, and how do you advocate for yourself during the hiring process? ✅What are the benefits of working with a recruiter who has also been a therapist? Are there benefits to working with a recruiter or job coach who doesn't have a clinical background?✅How to avoid “the grass is greener” thinking when approaching your career; and how to weigh the benefits and drawbacks of being an employee vs a contractor vs self-employed.In this episode, I mentioned the School of Clinical Leadership, my course that helps school clinicians take the executive functioning lead in their building. The event hosted 14 categories for students between third and twelfth grade, and had 200 total CCSD students. First place winners will compete in the state round on March 11 at the Academies of Creative Education, located on 1160 Dahlonega Highway in Cumming. Students who earned a top three placing in their category at the regional event will receive a medal or ribbon for their achievement. Frank Graham and Lori Stuart, both CCSD instructional technology specialists, organized the event according to a CCSD press release. The regional event was held virtually this year with students submitting a video presentation of their projects. CCSD students competed alongside Pickens, Gilmer, Murray and Fannin County students in the Piedmont region. For a full list of CCSD region winners, visit https://www.cherokeek12.net/News/techfair23. Cherokee County accounted for 29 of 36 possible selections on the all-Region 6AAAAAA basketball teams this week, with two players of the year in Brandon Rechsteiner and Mataya Gayle. Etowah's Rechsteiner and River Ridge's Gayle led their respective squads to No. 1 seeds heading into next week's region tournament. The Eagles are 11-1 in Region 6AAAAAA play, while the Knights went undefeated in the region for the second straight year. Eight honorees came from River Ridge, including five from the girls team alone — Gayle, first-teamer Sophia Pearl, second-teamer Kayla Cleaveland and honorable mentions Allie Sweet and Makayla Roberson. Through 25 games, Gayle leads River Ridge with 17.1 points per game, adding 5.8 assists and 4.6 rebounds on average. Pearl is averaging 13.4 points, behind only Gayle and Cleaveland (14.7 points, 5.8 rebounds). Etowah had the second-most players named to the all-region teams, with five boys and one girl. Mason Etter joined Rechsteiner as first-teamers, while Chase Clemmons and Dimitri Angelakos were named to the second team. Rechsteiner and the Eagles had an especially strong January. The Virginia Tech-bound guard averaged 19.3 points, 5.1 assists and 4.3 rebounds while leading Etowah to a 9-1 record in the month. Sequoyah and Woodstock each had five players earn all-region recognition, with Creekview at four. Following its rejuvenation during region play, Woodstock's girls were represented by Karson Martin and Casey Miller on the first team, alongside Pearl and Sequoyah's Elle Blatchford. Four nonprofit organizations in metro Atlanta have received donations from Delta Community Credit Union toward their respective mission to support local youth education. The credit union invested $35,000 in the educational services organizations Wednesday, kicking off the 10th year of its “Philanthropic Fund” awards. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metro Atlanta was awarded $10,000 to support its “Big Futures” curriculum, which emphasizes college and career exploration for students in grades 8 through 12. The organization, which offers one-to-one mentoring relationships for area youth, serves families in 12 metro Atlanta counties including Cherokee County. Another $10,000 was awarded to Communities in Schools of Atlanta, a dropout prevention organization that partners with 63 schools in economically challenged areas across Atlanta Public Schools, as well as Clayton County, DeKalb County, and Fulton County Public Schools. The grant will help provide wraparound services and intensive case management to nearly 2,800 students and support the organization's College and Career Readiness Program. Breakthrough Atlanta also received $10,000 to support its Vox Teen Voices program, which offers free afterschool and summer workshops for Atlanta teens. Mental Fitness 21st Century Learning received $5,000 to support its STEAM Academy, which allows many students who lack access to quality, affordable afterschool programs to participate in a STEAM curriculum that includes drones and robotics. Cherokee County and four of its cities have received a federal grant for the creation of a transportation safety plan to improve pedestrian safety. Cherokee County, Canton, Holly Springs, Woodstock and Ball Ground were awarded a $450,000 action plan grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation's Safe Streets and Roads for All program on Feb. 1. The grant was part of $800 million in awards for 510 projects through the first round of funding for the program, which provides funding for regional and local jurisdictions to develop a transportation safety action plan aimed at improving road designs to better sidewalks and crosswalks to prevent deaths and serious injuries on the nation's roadways. Day told the Tribune Friday that the public can expect to see the plan in 2024. The next steps are to complete grant award agreements and procure a consultant to complete the study. The study will likely begin later this year, he said. The plan will determine what projects and countermeasures are needed to improve the safety of the county's transportation system, Day said. With this plan and list of projects, the county and the cities can then set forth a strategy and timeline to complete the projects. Day added that the plan will likely make recommendations on intersection, signalization and pedestrian facilities improvements, among other possibilities. Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services promoted two firefighters Thursday night at the Cherokee County Fire Training Complex. Fire Apparatus Operator Justin Martin was promoted to the rank of sergeant and Sgt. Nicholas Spain was promoted to the rank of lieutenant. The newly promoted firefighters began serving in their new roles Feb. 5. The two were surrounded by family, friends, and fellow firefighters at the event as they were recognized and celebrated for this accomplishment. Fire Chief Eddie Robinson pinned the promoted firefighters with their new-collar insignia. Badges were pinned on the firefighters by family members. #CherokeeCounty #Georgia #LocalNews           -          -          -          -          -          -          The Cherokee Tribune Ledger Podcast is local news for Woodstock, Canton, and all of Cherokee County. Register Here for your essential digital news.             This podcast was produced and published for the Cherokee Tribune-Ledger and TribuneLedgerNews.com by BG Ad Group     For more information be sure to visit https://www.bgpodcastnetwork.com/    https://cuofga.org/   https://www.drakerealty.com/   https://www.esogrepair.com/       See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Raphael Warnock campaigns in Woodstock

Georgia's U.S. Senate runoff election is about two things, Sen. Raphael Warnock told supporters Saturday in Woodstock: competency and character. Warnock, the Democratic senator in a bid for reelection against Republican challenger and former University of Georgia football player Herschel Walker, made a stop outside Allen Temple AME Church during his runoff bus tour. A spokesperson for the Warnock campaign said about 300 people were in attendance at the event. He urged attendees to tell family and friends to vote, saying, “tell them there's too much on the line to stay home. tell them there's too much at stake... and the differences between me and my opponent are too wide.” Georgia's runoff election could determine which party controls the U.S. Senate. The Ebenezer Baptist Church pastor criticized his opponent, who he said had been dishonest about his credentials, claims to have worked with law enforcement and that he graduated from the University of Georgia. The senator touted his record, including sponsoring legislation to cap the costs of insulin for Medicare patients. Warnock told supporters he has a history of working across the aisle with Republican lawmakers, including Senator Ted Cruz, who was in Canton nine days before to stump for Walker. Walker pointed to the infrastructure bill, the PACT Act for veterans, and bills on gun control, maternal mortality, agriculture and making railway crossings safer as results of his bipartisan work. Officials from Keep Georgia Beautiful and Keep America Beautiful, Inc., recently welcomed Cherokee County to its expanding community-based Network of Affiliates with the certification of “Keep Cherokee Beautiful.” After a year of preparation, KCB finalized its affiliate certification at a recognition ceremony Tuesday at the Cherokee County Board of Commissioners work session. The affiliation process included the formation of a community team, attendance to numerous training events and the development of an action plan. In attaining the certification, Keep Cherokee Beautiful joins more than 70 local affiliates across Georgia. In addition, KCB will join more than 700 KAB affiliates, including 26 state affiliates, and several international affiliates. Currently, Keep Cherokee Beautiful works to reduce littering through programs like “Adopt-a-Mile,” community cleanups and supporting electronics recycling events, as well as providing recycling education through the organization's monthly electronic newsletter. In addition to receiving its program affiliation, KCB also recognized several members with awards that included Lisa Johnson who received the Outstanding Volunteer award, as well as the BridgeMill Homeowners Association, which received the award for Outstanding Adopt-A-Mile Partner. More information can be found at Cherokee GA dot Com. A family near Ball Ground has been displaced after their home was destroyed in a fire Saturday night. According to Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services, firefighters and Cherokee Sheriff's Office deputies responded to a residential structure fire fire at 10:40 p.m. Saturday on Fletcher Drive near Conns Creek Road. Firefighters found a home with significant fire involvement, and deployed hose lines to begin extinguishing it while ensuring all occupants were out of the home, the fire department reported. Due to the location of the closest fire hydrant, crews had to shuttle water to the scene using multiple fire engines. Fletcher Drive was shut down while crews responded to the fire. The structure, destroyed in the fire, was a home to five residents. One of those residents reported injuries and was assessed by Cherokee Fire personnel but refused transport to the hospital. The American Red Cross was contacted to assist the family with resources. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.   Developers applying to the city of Canton for annexations, rezonings or anything else that requires a public hearing for residential developments will have to wait a year before they can go to the city council. The Canton City Council unanimously approved an abeyance on applications for public hearings Thursday related to residential projects for a period of 12 months, effective immediately. An abeyance refers to a suspension of a process. This would not affect residential projects that are already approved or in development, were already scheduled to appear before the city council prior to the approval of the abeyance, or public hearings for proposed commercial developments. The city is also reaching the midpoint of the comprehensive planning cycle through the state of Georgia. During this part of the comprehensive plan, the city has an opportunity to adopt a short-term work plan and five-year update to the plan, set to expire in 2028.    The River Ridge girls basketball team started its season 1-0 on Thursday night, beating county rival Cherokee 64-38 at home. Kayla Cleaveland paced the Lady Knights' offense with a game-high 20 points, starting her sophomore season out strong. Sophia Pearl, also just a sophomore, was the second-leading scorer with 16 points, followed by Mataya Gayle with 15 points. Cleaveland dominated the second quarter, scoring 10 of her 10 points in the frame. Pearl took over late, tallying 12 of her points in the fourth quarter, including two 3-pointers. River Ridge started the season ranked No. 1 in the GHSA poll for Class AAAAAA, and in beating Cherokee, it knocked off the No. 8-ranked team in Class AAAAAAA. The Lady Warriors started their season 1-0, but fell even at 1-1 on Thursday. Standout junior Toni Warren scored a team-best nine points, followed by Hannah Harris with six points. Riley Simmons pitched in five points and Madison Moody finished with four. Harris was especially active in the first half to help keep Cherokee in the game, with Warren picking her offense up in the third quarter. Both teams are back in action on Saturday, with River Ridge matching up with Carver, and Cherokee looking to get back in the win column against Lumpkin County.   Ferst Readers of Cherokee County can provide books to more than 130 children in the county for a year thanks to a donation from the Towne Lake Rotary Club Foundation. Julia Johnson, a member of the Ferst Readers Cherokee County Action Team, attended the Nov. 17 Rotary Club of Towne Lake meeting to accept a check on behalf of the nonprofit and shared her passion for Ferst Readers and education. Towne Lake Rotary issued part of the donation several months ago during a time of critical need, and on Thursday, presented the remainder of the donation for a total of $4,730. Ferst Readers was started by Robin Ferst in Madison, Georgia. in 1999 after hearing from a plant executive who was having difficulty finding employees who could read at the level required to be hired. Ferst made it her mission to introduce children to reading early, and the nonprofit, Ferst Readers, was born. The program provides age-appropriate books and a corresponding newsletter for children ages birth to 5 years old every month. In Cherokee County, 240 children receive Ferst Readers' services.

Over the last decade, Kelsey has helped hundreds of online business owners like you build their brands and online presences as the Founder and Creative Director of Pinegate Road - personal branding and web design agency. She has her MFA in Graphic Design from the Savannah College of Art and Design, and is a life and business coach. In 2016, she successfully made the transition from working in Corporate America while pursuing a side hustle, to the CEO of her own online design agency and education business. She deeply believes that everyone has the potential to make their dreams a reality, and Pinegate Road helps people do just that. Fast forward to today, Kelsey leads a 6-figure+ virtual design agency, and is at the point where she has complete freedom to create her own schedule (aka: currently working about 10h work weeks so she can be home with her little fam most of the time). She wants this freedom for you too! She has a passion for supporting online service providers, coaches, and educators to help them lead businesses and live lives that are fulfilling and profitable.   Here's what we covered on the episode: Heading  From Corporate America to Running a Design Studio In high school, Kelsey was artsy and knew she wanted to do something with that but also make money, so she decided to become a graphic designer and that's what she went to school for  How Kelsey started a lifestyle blog which turned into people asking her how to design their own websites which grew into a studio that she always had on the side After Kelsey graduated she went to work in Corporate America where she was designing stationery for Target, Walmart, and other national campaigns as a hand lettering artist  In 2016, Kelsey's business grew enough to where took her design studio full-time   There are only two companies in the country that hire hand lettering artists on salary, Hallmark and American Greetings; Kelsey interviewed with both while in grad school and went with American Greetings, which is why she moved and currently lives in Cleaveland, Ohio  While in grad school, Kelsey needed a creative outlet which is why she started her lifestyle blog where she was talking about boyfriends, design trends, and color palettes and shares she accidentally grew her business by putting her color palettes and designs on Pinterest  How Kelsey's blog business turned into her editing peoples blog headers, then it became full-on brands and websites and by the time she graduated grad school it had turned into a legit design studio where they had packages offering branding, full logo suites, building out the brands on people's collateral and then the website Kelsey shares that she has endometriosis and knew it was time to make the switch to full-time with her design studio when she was laid up in bed for several weeks at a time due to her health and says she was fully prepared to make the switch, she had savings, was making more money with it than her salary job and working fewer hours  How Kelsey's team reached out to share her story with me and asked about her being on the podcast, which was great because she was actually on my list of people to invite to have on the podcast  Productizing Services + Team Support  One of the biggest things that helped Kelsey get her business where she wanted it to be financially was productizing their services and having a very solid process for each of the things their clients would be going through   How Kelsey was hiring out team members to support those processes while she was working full-time because she didn't want her personal schedule and availability to dictate how fast the business could grow — this allowed her to grow and scale the business to where she was making more money than at her salary job   Kelsey shares that the first logo she sold was $300, and then when she started running her design studio, their logo package was $1,500 and the website was also $1,500, and shares she would also take hand lettering projects on the side How people were finding Kelsey on Pinterest for her hand lettering work and how she had ad agencies reach out to her about doing hand lettering for different national ad campaigns  When it comes to hiring your team, Kelseys says you should design your picture-perfect experience without you in the process, that way you know what roles are needed and if you have the time and want to take on all of those roles, that's fine, but you might not want to  The first person Kelsey hired was a developer because it was the most time-consuming thing that felt the least creative, the next task she handed off was project management so she could be the one doing the strategy, brand design, and web design while the build-out and client communication was being handled by her team As her business started to scale, Kelsey started to hire brand designers and web designers to come into the projects    How Kelsey got the entire agency to function without her in preparation for having her son in 2019 — she didn't want to step back into the design business after her pregnancy but loves being able to talk with clients, do the strategy and creative directing while having a team to support the doing   Kelsey's Future Plans + Coaching Business  Since Kelsey set her agency up to run without her time and doing, she started growing her education and coaching business because she is very passionate about supporting people and teaching other business providers how to scale in a sustainable way that uniquely works for their business  Kelsey explains that the agency gains clients from word of mouth, past clients who tell their friends, Pinterest, and site credits at the bottom of a website   For the last two years, Kelsey wasn't focused on growing the design business and instead was working to grow her coaching business but says this year she will be focusing on growing the design business  One thing Kelsey says is, there's no such thing as a website emergency, so in their contracts with clients they have firm processes and boundaries outlining what they are available for and what they are not available for going forward For websites, the agency offers 30 days of post-launch support but does not provide ongoing maintenance, instead, they tell clients how they can go do that, who they can go to, where they can find that  Kelsey explains the agency team's three then me rule, which means if anyone has a problem they have to look for 3 different solutions to the question or problem before they  go to Jannet, Kelsey's project manager, and if Jannet needs help, then she can ask Kelsey  What growth means for the design studio this year, who Kelsey is hiring, and the templates they will be selling  The story of Kelsey's horrific first year going full-time in her design business Kelsey tells us about The Aligned Business™ Academy, her coaching business that helps people create sustainable six-figure years that they can have for the rest of their business lives while having freedom in their life, and The Aligned Business™ Mastermind for people wanting to scale to seven-figures   How Kelsey developed and scaled her coaching business from the start to what it is today  Kelsey talks about emotional boundaries she's had to set in her business how she is Aujourd'hui, pour les investisseurs en immobilier locatifs : Une interview concernant le marché immobilier américain. QUANTIFYING THE ROLE OF LIVESTOCK MOVEMENTS FOR THE TRANSMISSION OF RVF IN NORTHERN TANZANIA. The buying and selling of livestock represents a substantial contribution to the income and livelihood of the people who husband them, however these movements also represent a risk of infectious disease transmission. While the health and commercial costs of disease means that there is incentive to control them, those affected by these costs are often not those most responsible for causing them. Thus market forces cannot be relied upon to restrict disease transmission, and policy-based interventions to prevent pathogen spread are necessary. Modern data-driven approaches to livestock management mean that in many higher income countries, data on livestock movements are collected routinely and stored digitally, and so they can readily be used to inform disease control efforts. However in Tanzania, as with many other LMICs, data on movement patterns must be generated. Here, I describe the collection and analysis of a substantial dataset generated from paper records, which is used to generate a ‘synthetic' dataset that replicates key features of recorded patterns of movements to represent livestock movement patterns across northern Tanzania. A combination of network analysis and simulation is then used to determine key locations that can be targeted for control of many diseases including the important zoonosis, Rift Valley Fever (RVF). We show that targeting control efforts at locations that are critical because of either their role in the network of cattle movements or the inherent local risk of transmission can provide similar gains in control efficiency. While further investigations are necessary to corroborate these results, they suggest that multiple levers may be available to manage this and other livestock diseases. Efficient control of livestock diseases in areas with limited data and resources available is essential and here, by demonstrating the potential utility of livestock movement data in targeting interventions, this provides an argument for routine collection of such data. This will be especially important for ongoing assessment of risks as we face a future of increased uncertainty in living with environmental and land use change.R.R. Cybersecurity Futures 2025. This panel was recorded on the Moscone Center floor during RSA Conference 2025. It follows a Pre-Conference podcast with panelist Dawn Thomas and Alan Cohn and the actual presentation that took place the day before this recording. The project “Cybersecurity Futures 2025” is a collaboration between the University of California, Berkeley Center for Long-Term Cybersecurity (CLTC) and CNA’s Institute for Public Research, conducted in partnership with the World Economic Forum’s Global Future Council on Cybersecurity (2016-2018) and the Forum’s Centre for Cybersecurity. If this topic doesn’t fit right At The Intersection Of IT Security And Society I am not sure what else could. It is an exciting time to be alive with so many incredible scientific and technological advancements in every area of our lives, with states interacting together and cultures mixing in a global boundary-less cyberspace. It is also a dangerous time to be alive in this new technological era where cybersecurity issues encompass every area of our lives and affect geopolitical dynamics, and the way societies evolve. The decisions we are making today about technology interacting with humans are going to affect our society in 2025 and way beyond that time.  It is now that we must force ourselves to think about fundamental philosophical questions and come up with good answers and courses of action, because those, or the lack of those, are already affecting us now and will affect us even more in our future. For this panel, I invited Ann Cleaveland, (CLTC Executive Director), Diana Kelly (Microsoft), and Priscilla Koepke (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) to recap the research and discuss what the biggest challenges, fears, and possible solutions to the four presented scenarios are. Scenario 1 — Quantum Leap Scenario 2 — The New Wiggle Room Scenario 3 — Barlow’s Revenge Scenario 4 — Trust Us Are we looking at a dystopian, a utopian or a realistic future that we can shape making the right choices today? It was the first time Jackson had played football since junior high school, having participated only in basketball and track in high school. In spite of his brief experience, in 2003 the Cleveland Browns signed Jackson as an undrafted rookie free agent. He spent three years with the team on the practice squad and was elevated to the active roster for one regular season game. In 2006 he joined the Denver Broncos practice squad, but an injury ultimately led to the end of the road for him in the NFL.However, the NFL is a place where life-long connections develop, regardless of the time spent. Jackson’s experience was no different. Along with developing those relationships, he also watched as many around him dealt with a variety of challenges that come with being a professional athlete.“It really was my experience, and my friends’ experiences, of people discouraging us from being independent thinkers and being pushed into the realm of just play football,” Jackson said. “I saw some of my buddies fall into that trap. If you’re not an independent thinker, you start to depend on other people to think for you. I had people call me up and talk about devastating experiences with people they trusted and had relied on to think for them. That’s not the plan. It got me thinking, ‘What’s the solution?’”The solution Jackson came up with was, Qwerkz. Qwerkz is an app for professional athletes to connect with each other and share ideas, experiences and information about any topic they choose, including business endeavors.“The goal of Qwerkz is to create the atmosphere where guys can communicate with each other but succeed on their own,” Jackson said. “These guys are going to bring so much more value to each other. When we’re communicating I can find new opportunities for myself and I might not be as dependent on you as you would like me to be" - from Lisa Zimmerman on NFL Player Engagement.- https://www.linkedin.com/in/coreyjacksonspeaks/- http://qwerkz.com/Please do NOT hesitate to reach out to me on LinkedIn, Instagram, or via email mark@vudream.comLinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/mark-metry/Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/markmetry/Twitter - https://twitter.com/markymetryMedium - https://medium.com/@markymetryFacebook - https://www.facebook.com/Humans.2.0.PodcastMark Metry - https://www.markmetry.com/Humans 2.0 Twitter - https://twitter.com/Humans2Podcast

Using Google AdWords to Attract Design Clients - RD123

Using Google AdWords to Attract Design Clients Any time designers get together in person or online on platforms like Facebook, LinkedIn or Reddit, you’re sure to hear someone ask how to attract more clients. It’s one of, if not the most significant problem faced by designers. Without clients, your business fails. It doesn’t matter how good a designer you are if you don’t have people paying for your services your business will not survive. There are many ways you can attract new clients. Last week I shared 12 inexpensive ways for you to promote your design business. A couple of years ago I wrote a blog post where I shared 10 proven ways to attract design clients. All methods I’ve used myself to gain clients. Today I want to talk about a great way to attract clients that for some reason, not many graphic designers or web designers are taking advantage of. Google AdWords. How do clients find you? Ask most designers, and they will tell you the number one way they gain new clients is through word of mouth referrals. Referrals are great. But what if you don’t have a large catalogue of clients advocating for your business? Let's look at it from a client's perspective. Let's say you need a plumber. Who will you call? Your first choice would be to call a plumber you know, or at least one you've heard of before. Your Second choice would be to ask family, friends, co-workers and associates who they would recommend. That’s the referral part. If it doesn’t work, you would probably turn to a search engine and look for plumbers in your area. Design clients do the same thing. They contact a designer they know or have heard of before. That’s where brand awareness comes in. Second, they ask family, friends, colleagues, associates etc. That’s where referrals come in. But when that fails, clients will turn to the internet and search for a designer online. And chances are they will formulate their search to look for someone in their local area. That last part is a huge benefit for you, especially if you are using Google AdWords to get in front of them. If you’re already familiar with how AdWords works, you’re probably nodding your head right now in agreement with me, but I’m going to continue with the assumption that you are not familiar with Google AdWords. Forgive me if I'm wrong. For the record, Yahoo and Bing also have similar advertising platforms, but since the majority of people use Google, I’m going to concentrate on it. So how does Google AdWords work for attracting design clients? Let me break it down into the simplest terms using only three steps, You figure out what keywords people are searching. You create an ad that Google puts in front of people actively searching for those keywords. You pay Google for the people that click on your ads. That’s all there is to it. The best part about Google AdWords is you only pay when your ads are working, and people engage with them. If they don't click, you don't pay. Now of course, “when your ads are working” is a relative term. In this case, it means when people click on your ad. Whether or not they become a client after clicking on your ad is not Google’s concern. A deeper dive into AdWords. I won't go into the technical nitty gritty of setting up a successful AdWords campaign. There are plenty of other resources where you can learn the ins and outs of fine-tuning your ad campaign to get the most bang for your buck. I will, however, elaborate on the three steps I mentioned above. Create an AdWords Account The first step is creating a free AdWords account and telling Google how to charge you for your ads. They have to make their money after all. Once your account set up, you can create your first ad campaign by choosing the type of ads you want to run. There are several options, but in my opinion Search Ads are the best ones for attracting new design clients. Next, you select the campaign type. I suggest you choose website traffic and don’t include Google Search Partners or the Ad Display Network. Both are good for driving traffic to a product or resource, but your goal is to attract clients. Set up the delivery What makes Google AdWords such a valuable marketing tool is the ability to pick the geographic location where your ads will appear. If you live in Cleaveland Ohio, you can set up your campaign so that only people in Cleaveland will see it. There are several reasons to limit your search to particular geographic regions. Top among them is the amount of competition you face the broader your target area. If you set your campaign to all of the USA you are competing with every other designer across the whole country. It is possible to win in that scenario, but since a kind of bidding/auction system is used to determine ad placement, it could get costly. Of course, there's a lot more to the whole thing that I'm not getting into which is why I suggest you take an AdWords course before starting. But basically, targetting an entire country is just too difficult for someone just starting out. By narrowing down your geographic area, you are narrowing down who you are competing with and the effort required to get your ads in front of potential clients. Set your budget You need to set a budget for your ad campaign. It can be as high or as low as you want. There are several options for choosing how to invest your money in your campaign. What I suggest is using the standard delivery method since it gives you better analytical data on your ads. For the bidding method. I suggest Clicks over Views. With Clicks, you only pay when someone clicks on your ad whereas with Views you get charged every time your ad is displayed regardless of whether or not someone interacts with it. The final part of setting your budget is choosing a start and end dates of your campaign. I suggest starting out with short campaigns until you get the hang of it. Choose your keywords. Choosing keywords is the fun part. You get to decide what keywords you want to target with your ads. These are the words you think people will type into the search engine to find you. Start off with common sense terms like; web design website design web designer logo design logo designer etc. You can narrow down your keywords even further by adding a location such as "web designer Cleveland." Choosing keywords is easy, choosing the right keywords is a bit more tricky. Targetting "website designer" may bring you a lot more traffic than "web designer" or vice versa. There are tools to research what keywords are more popular than others, or how often specific keywords are searched. Google’s Keyword Planner is a popular free one. I use software called Long Tail Pro for my keyword research. Create your ads Finally, you need to create your ads. There is an option to create banner style ads, but for finding design clients, all you need is standard search results ads. These show up as the first few listings when you do a Google search. They have a small [Ad] next to them. Then it's just a matter of choosing the right title and wording to attract clients to your site, launching your campaign and waiting for clients to come calling. How to get the most out of Google AdWords. Google AdWords is very easy to learn. However, there is a learning curve if you want to get good at it and not end up wasting money. Here are some tips to help you get the most out of your AdWords campaign. 1) Build landing pages. AdWords campaigns work best when linked to a dedicated landing page and not your home page. Google give each ad a rank that helps determine it's placement (along with other factors) vs the competition. The page your ad is linked to plays a significant factor in your ad rank score. If your ad is for logo design. Make sure it’s linked to a landing page that is just about logo design. 2) Study what your competitors are doing Figure out what keywords your competitors are targeting and what ads they are displaying and try and outdo them. Keyword tools like the one by Google can help you figure out the best keywords to target, but they also allow you to enter a competitor’s URL and see what keywords they are targetting. 3) Split test Google AdWords is not a set it and forget it system. You should study the performance of your ads and adjust things on the go. If you are getting a lot of traction with the keyword “web design” but not much with “website design” then you should adjust your campaign to push more of your budget towards the keyword that is performing better. Split testing ads for a single keyword also works well in figuring out which ad copy is earning more clicks. 4) Link your Google AdWords and Google Analytics Accounts. AdWords has some excellent tracking info, but it only tells you what happened with your ad up until the point it is clicked. By linking your Google Analytics account to your AdWords account, you can follow along and see what happens after your ad is clicked. 5) Start small and grow as you get more comfortable creating ad campaigns. Although AdWords is easy to learn, there are a lot of things that influence the success or failure of an ad campaign. Until you are comfortable, I suggest setting short campaigns and starting with a low budget until you learn the nuances of the platform. "Hacking" Google AdWords I mentioned above that one of the best things about Google AdWords is the ability to target geographic areas because it narrows down the competition. But what if you live in a large metropolitan area with lots of competition? In my example, I used Cleveland Ohio. Let's say there's a lot of competition for web designers in Cleveland and the cost of running your AdWords campaign is getting high. Nothing is stopping you from targeting other areas instead. There are plenty of smaller areas around Cleveland that you could target. Places like Bedford Heights, Euclid, Olmstead Falls, and others. Nothing is stopping you from choosing keywords targetting those smaller communities. Chances are the competition will be much lower so your budget will go much farther and clients there shouldn't be opposed to working with a web designer in Cleveland. And the best part is if it doesn’t work out and nobody clicks on your ads, it doesn’t cost you a cent. Give Google AdWords at try So many designers are struggling to find design clients, and yet this inexpensive way to target exactly the people you want to work with is at your disposal. It doesn't matter where in the world you are; Google AdWords can help you attract design clients because it's putting your ads directly in front of the people actively looking for your services. If you are not already taking advantage of search engine advertising, I highly suggest you look into it soon. What is your experience with online advertising to attract design clients?
