Children's Eye Care and Remote Schoolwork (0:00:00) Many of our kids are glued to their computer screens for many hours as a result of remote learning. In fact, they're surpassing their screen time limits to the dismay of their parents. But there's a reason why screen time limits are a thing. Not only do they keep children off the internet for too long, they also help keep your eyes healthy. So, what can we do to keep our children's eyes safe as they occupy their online classrooms this semester? Joining us this morning is Dr. David Guyton, a professor of pediatric ophthalmology, here with us to discuss how to care for your child's eyes during remote learning.   The Power of a Pause (0:18:21) Since the March shutdowns, life has slowed down, and even stopped for each of us. Sometimes it feels like we're trapped in a moment in time as everything we looked forward to this year was cancelled or put on hold. While this hasn't been ideal, maybe this pause has given us something extremely valuable. So, what is the gift we can take away from this time? Our friends Kim Howie and Nancy Werteen from The Wisdom Coalition join us today to help us understand the power this pause has in in our lives.   The Science of Outdoor Play (0:34:36) Growing up, summertime was sacred. Every moment, from the time I left in the morning till I got home at night, was a treasure. However, it seems like the days once marked by countless hours of adult-free, outdoor play are steadily growing to be a thing of the past. More and more playtime seems to be relegated to the confines of the playroom, or worse, a phone screen. The consequences of this decrease in the amount of active, outdoor play could be significant. Here to discuss the importance of outdoor, active play and how it affects our brain development is biologist and outdoor advocate, Dr. Carla Hannaford.   The Legacy of Chadwick Boseman (0:52:46) We were heartbroken and shocked along with the rest of the world to hear about the passing of Chadwick Boseman late last month. Chadwick was best known for his role as T'Challa in Black Panther. After an unknown 4-year battle with colon cancer, Chadwick passed away on August, 28th. As we've been working to make peace with this loss, we wanted to take a moment today to reflect on his life, work and legacy. Here to share his thoughts with us is race and culture writer Tre Johnson.   Weekend Review (1:30:34) Richie talks us through what there is to do this weekend, from the newest shows coming to streaming services, to the New York Times Bestseller list, to what going on in your community.

Burnout at Your Dream Job (0:00:00) Our dreams in life can be so misleading –sometimes you feel like you know exactly what you want, only to have it turn out not quite how you expected. This can be especially true for a career-working nonstop to land a job, just to find out that you were merely scratching the surface on how hard it would be, isn't the best motivator. So how do you reconcile having achieved your lifelong goal, but it can feel like it's too much work? Today, we're joined by Will Meyerhofer, a lawyer-turned-psychotherapist, here with us to discuss dealing with burnout at your dream job.   The Mental Demands of E-Sports (0:22:35) E-sports have become a new, sweeping internet trend. With championships worth millions of dollars and platforms like Twitch developed specifically for fans to watch their favorite gamers live, E-sports are here to stay. But what does a virtual game have in common with real life, on the field games? Well just like any sport, E-sports require mental toughness. Here to discuss the mental demands of E-sports and how players are impacted is sports psychologist and Senior Lecturer in Sport and Exercise Psychology at the University of Chichester, England, Dr. Phil Birch.   Time to Create (0:38:08) We all have this innate desire to create. Your idea might be an art piece, a film, a business, or a podcast. You have the idea, now you just need the time to make it happen. So, I guess it's good that the one thing we have too much of these days in quarantine is time. But isn't it crazy how working from home and being around your family 24/7 seems to fill all the hours in your day? It feels like we only have time for an episode of our favorite show rather than anew creative project. Well, that might not be so true. Today we invited Bryan Collins on the show to share how we can use the Pomodoro technique and our extra time to tap into our creative juices and make something. He's a journalist and author of “Yes, You Can Write”.   Backpacking for Beginners (0:52:45) I hear a lot of people say they dream of backpacking across Europe. Which makes me wonder if they know what they'd be getting themselves into. Living out of a backpack seems easy and less expensive. You don't have to carry as much stuff. But how do you fit everything in there if you're a chronic over packer? And how do you really feel about wearing the same clothes every day? While you might not be going to Europe any time soon due to COVID travel restrictions, maybe you want to backpack through your local national park or mountain range. So, we invited backpacking expert Michael Lanza on the show today to give us all the best tips for planning the perfect backpacking trip.   Change Your Mindset (1:13:54) We have so much change going on around us, especially with news about the pandemic fluctuating everyday and businesses trying to open. We've had changes in our families with camps, summer vacations, and work schedules. And we have no idea what the future holds. With all of this change, how can we go forward with the right mindset? And why is that so important. Kim Howie and Nancy Werteen, co-founders of The Wisdom Coalition and friends of the show, are here today with some advice on how we can manage our mindsets during this difficult time.   Why Employers want Humanities Majors (1:27:32) Humanities have long been the bane of any parent paying for their child's college education. Most young, idealistic college hopefuls intent on majoring in something in the school of humanities are told to study something useful, something that can pay the bills. The irony all this however, is that employers are increasingly seeking out humanities majors and they are nearly as gainfully employed as their STEM major counterparts. Here to discuss this phenomenon is Dr. Robert Townsend, author of the 2018 report “The State of Humanities 2018: Workforce and Beyond” published by the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.   Weekend Review (1:40:36) Richie talks about what there is to do this weekend, from the newest shows coming to streaming services to the New York Times Bestseller list.

Asthma Awareness (0:00:00) Did you know that currently 26 million Americans live with asthma? This condition causes 1.6 million trips to the emergency room a year. It's also the #1 cause of missed school days. So, with May being Asthma Awareness Month and knowing that so many families are impacted, we wanted to bring your attention to how this condition affects those who have it. Because it goes far beyond just shortness of breath. In fact, people with asthma are at a higher risk of getting really sick from the current coronavirus. Joining us on the show this morning is Andrea Jensen, a public health educator at the Utah County Health Department, here to talk with us about asthma awareness and how we can be more of a support to those who have it.  Humor as a Coping Mechanism (0:19:03) We know that laughter is often the best medicine. Just like many of you, sometimes when I'm going through a tough time, I make jokes about it, because that's how I cope. Especially now, during the stay at home and social distancing orders, many of us have turned to social media to  relieve our stress  and joke  about  life  at  home. Many people have also “meme-ified” the pandemic. A lot of good humor has come out of this. But sometimes we're all a little too casual about a serious situation. So, when should we draw the line? With us today is our friend and comedian Mike Brody to talk about humor and comedy in the face of all of this darkness.  Healthy Relationship Expectations (0:35:12) We all have expectations for the people we are in relationships with. However, sometimes our expectations get out of control and we assume our significant other should take on or fill more of our emotional needs than they should have to. This can create an imbalance in the relationship which takes a heavy toll on one person. So, how can we set healthier expectations for ourselves and our significant other? To answer this question, we invited Alicia Muñoz onto the show. She is a couple's therapist and she teaches that learning to meet our own self-care needs can help us establish healthy and realistic expectations.   COVID-19 and Relationships (0:50:37) Being around someone 24/7, even if you love them, can be taxing on a relationship. After China came out of their COVID lockdown there was a 25% increase in couples filing for divorce. And if you've been locked up with your significant other for all of quarantine—maybe you're having similar thoughts. But what can we do to keep our relationships together right now? Here with her professional advice on the matter is relationship expert and psychologist Dr. Holly Parker.   Kids and Loss (1:09:39) Over the past few months, our kids have missed out on a lot of experiences. They've lost graduations, hang outs with friends, and other anticipated activities. Mental health experts are worried about children who are facing these losses as well as their parents who are under so much pressure to make things right. So, what can parents do to help their kids cope with what they've lost during the pandemic? Kim Howie and Nancy Werteen, co-founders of The Wisdom Coalition and friends of the show, are here today to give us some advice for boosting our kids' morale despite their current situation.   Weekend Review (1:24:38) Lisa and Richie talk about what there is to do this weekend, from new streaming shows to the New York Times Bestseller List.

Freelance Survival during COVID-19 (0:00:00)Coronavirus has thrown off basically everything in our lives from our school to work to even how close we can stand to people. One group that has been seriously affected by the pandemic is the freelance community. With businesses being put on hold for the next few weeks, the number of jobs for freelancers to do is declining rapidly. So, what can freelancers do during this crisis to stay afloat? Today we're joined by Alexander and Sarabeth Lewis, both freelance copywriters, to discuss what freelancers are currently facing and how they can adapt to this current situation.  The Power of Slow (0:14:58)This whole quarantine process has kind of forced most of us to grind to a halt with our daily lives. Things seem slower now, and sometimes it can be infuriating! But is this new slow pace really all that bad? There's been an international movement the past few years that's starting to really gain some traction. It's called the Slow Movement. From Slow Food to Slow Cities, organizations are cropping up all over the world to promote a less break-neck lifestyle. To learn more about how taking things slow can benefit us, we've invited Carl Honore onto the show. Carl is an internationally bestselling author of 8 books, and the unintentional godfather of the Slow Movement.  Soda Will Kill You (0:34:26)A lot of people have their vices, and for many, that vice is soda. A cool can after a long day or on a hot afternoon can be very satisfying. Now we've heard a lot about how soda and sugary drinks are bad for our teeth, can contribute to weight gain, among other problems. But a study done by the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public health showed that soda can now be linked with an increase risk of mortality. So, can soda really kill you? We are talking with one of the lead researchers on the study, Dr. Vasani Malik, to learn if we really need to kick this habit in order to live longer.  Young on Raw Food (0:50:33)It seems like no matter what we do age catches up to us. Our hair thins, our bodies slow down, and our skin wrinkles. Aging is just a part of time passing. But is there a way we could beat aging and feel great—even at say... 80? Mimi Kirk, author and raw food chef and coach says there is. She joins us today to tell us about how eating raw has changed her life.  Easter and COVID-19 (1:08:26)We're all facing different circumstances than normal right now, and one thing that will be really different from normal is how we celebrate Easter. What is often a holiday celebrated with lots of family will have to be celebrated with less people. So how can we make the most of our circumstances this Easter? Here to help us navigate this different way of celebrating this holiday are Kim Howie and Nancy Werteen. They are the co-founders of The Wisdom Coalition and friends of the show.  Weekend Review (1:25:08)Lisa and Richie talk about what there is to do this weekend, from new streaming shows to the best books to read.

Pain and Placebo (0:00:00)The human brain can do some incredible things. It can store millions of memories, do complex math problems by itself, and (on a good day) it can even remember your neighbor's name. But did you know that it has the power to relieve your body of pain, without taking any medicine? This interesting phenomenon is called the “placebo effect” and has been studied by scientists for centuries. Joining us on the show today is Dr. Jeffrey Mogil, a pain researcher from McGill University, here with us to talk about the placebo effect and how it is impacting pain research.  Don't Slow Down (0:14:31)For a lot of us, retirement is a ways away, but it's something we still think about. And, it's always good to plan ahead. But do you ever fear that once you do retire, you'll have way too much free time? You'll have 40 or so extra hours during the week. What are you supposed to do with them? Seymour Ubell is an entrepreneur who founded a company in his sixties and continues to work as Chairman. He has no intentions of slowing down. We love his hardworking and driven attitude and wanted to find out how he stays motivated.  Stand-Up in a Crisis (0:32:05)When the world is as crazy as it is right now, where do you turn to take your mind off of things? When we're trying to forget our worries, some people throw themselves into their work. Others dig into a good book. But nothing works quite like finding something to make you laugh. Whether it's watching a classic sitcom or listening to a full standup performance, comedy can help us come to terms with reality, while also helping us forget about it. We're joined this morning by standup comedian and actor Ethan Herschenfeld to talk about what comedy means to him.  Safe Communities (0:50:38)When we talk about “safety”, we usually think about those who are in charge of protecting us... homeland security, neighborhood watch or police patrol. But even though these protection organizations are in place all across the country, we all still have feelings of anxiety about our safety. We still lock our doors at night. We might even invest in a home security system. And sometimes our reactions to our anxiety can negatively affect marginalized people. So, what can be done to build communities where everyone feels safe? Here to share with us his ideas on the subject is Zach Norris, author of “We Keep Us Safe.”  Struggling with Food (1:05:47)In our culture that is focused so much on appearance, it's easy to beat ourselves up based on what we eat. Some of us eat too much, some of us eat too little. Especially now that most of us are quarantined in our own homes, it can be so hard to have a good relationship with food. Here to help us learn how to develop a healthy relationship with food as we travel our own paths is Kim Howie and Nancy Werteen. History of the Leap Year (0:00:00) Let's see if you can guess what I'm talking about. It happens almost every four years. There was a movie made after it. And those who were lucky enough to be born on this day can claim they are much younger than they actually are. Yes, it's Leap Day! Tomorrow, February 29th, also known as Leap Day, is when our calendar realigns itself with the Earth's motion. But where did leap day originate from? Believe it or not, the history of leap day actually goes back thousands of years before our time. Today we are joined by John Lowe, a scientist emeritus for the National Institute of Standards and Technology, to talk about Leap Day and why it exists.   Helping Friends with Hospitalized Kids (0:15:21) One of the most important parts of friendship is being there for the people you love. This can be challenging sometimes, especially when the people we love are stressed or worried. One especially hard time for parents is when they have a sick child, especially if that child has been admitted to the hospital. How can we make this experience easier for our friends? Joining us today to share some insight is Dr. James Kirk Bass, a neonatologist and pediatrician with the University of Tennessee Medical Center.   What to Do When Your Computer Breaks Down (0:33:08) Tech expert and friend of the show Joel Jacobs talks with Lisa and Richie about what we should do when our computer crashes in order to save our files.   Cultural Appropriation (0:50:38) At the Oscars earlier this month, Oscar winner and Hair Love director Matthew Cherry gave a shout out to special guest DeAndre Arnold. DeAndre is a high school senior who the Hair Love team invited to the Oscars after his school told him he wouldn't be able to walk at graduation because of his dread locks. DeAndre is just one of many children of color who are penalized at school for wearing natural or stylized hair that is deemed “unprofessional.” On the last day of Black History Month, we wanted to discuss this issue a little more with cosmetologist and textured hair expert Maria Antoinette Loggins. She joins us to talk about why it's more than just hair.   Self-Compassion (1:06:22) All of us have days where we feel like we can't do anything right and beating ourselves up is so easy. But we also know that it's really not good to do this. It's so hard to get out of this habit. How can we show ourselves more compassion? Here to help us learn how to develop self-compassion as we travel our own paths is Kim Howie and Nancy Werteen. They are the co-founders of The Wisdom Coalition.   Weekend Review (1:24:53) Lisa and Richie talk about what's happening this weekend, from new movies and shows to the community events happening near you.

Dance movement therapy is a new, popular form of trauma treatment that's healing people's minds and bodies with movement and dance. Joining us today to talk about this modern form of therapy is Orit Krug, a certified dance movement therapist.  Food Allergies in Kids (0:13:37)Sometimes it's so hard to tell if your kids are just picky or if the food is really making them sick. Food allergies are increasingly common in young children—it's estimated that 5.6 MILLION kids here in America have one or more food allergies. So how can you tell if you kid is allergic to something, intolerant, or just being difficult? What do you do? Traveling with friends can either be a happy or hectic experience, and can either make or break your relationship. Middle school kids have a lot on their minds as they try to figure out their place in the world while also balancing drama, puberty and classwork. And parenting middle school kids is no walk in the park either. During this time, our kids' brains are developing at a rate they haven't developed at since the first 2 years of life. It's clear that middles school isa crucial time in our kids' growth. So, what can we do to make middle school a better experience for our kids (which will surely make our lives as parents easier)? Here to tell us her ideas on the subject is adolescent development expert and author Nancy Deutsch.   Finding More Joy (1:05:50)It's no secret that life is hard now and then. Sometimes it's a walk on the beach. Other times it feels like you're struggling up a steep mountain trail with no end in sight. Yet no matter where you're at on the journey, it's always possible to find joy. But how? Here to help us learn how to find happiness as we travel our own paths are Kim Howie and Nancy Werteen. While you probably don't rely solely on the Groundhog to determine the next 6 weeks of winter or an early spring, your ancestors might have, in a celebration that began long before Groundhog Day. Joining us to discuss the origins and forgotten traditions of the least overwhelming holiday of the year is Reverend Dr. Patricia M Lyons, who teaches at Virginia Theological Seminary.  Weekend Review (1:36:30)Lisa and Richie discuss the movies that are coming to theaters and streaming this weekend, as well as what events are happening around the country.
