Doug, welcome to the show. Thanks very much, Steve. Great to be here. Looking forward to it. All right, so very interesting. Self-awareness is a big topic and you have co-founded the company around this topic. So what was the path that led you to this decision to become the co-founder and CEO of Think2Perform? Well, I'm in my early 70s, so I won't name the number just in case this is a timeless podcast. I'm in my early 70s. Yes. And I will say since I was really young, I mean, literally, I began wondering why people do what they do when I was a young boy. And I continued, and I continue. So I'm not done. And so what really led to this is I really been interested in the answer to two questions, pretty much my entire life. The first question is why do people do what they do? And then the second question, is it possible that I or one could really be who I would ideally like to be more often. I was always looking at it from a very self-reflective perspective. Why do I do what I do? Why do other people do what they do? But then for me, is it possible that I could be who I'd like to be a little more often than I am? Because I realized I'm not the guy I want to be all the time and I just never understood that. And so those two questions essentially were the foundation of the company. Love it, that's great. So it seems to me that at the basis, and you also stated in your company description obviously, is that self-awareness is the critical ingredient in performance. So what makes it the critical ingredient? Well, without it, the advantage to self-awareness is it gives us a platform from which we can make decisions. You know, I'm a philosopher, really, who got locked into business, and my favorite chain of philosophers were the great Greeks, starting with Socrates and then Plato and then Aristotle. And Aristotle was the one to have said, knowing oneself is the beginning of wisdom. And Socrates, who was Plato's teacher, Socrates was the guy who said, a life unexamined is not worth living. Knowing oneself is the beginning of wisdom. - AristotleShare on X Yes, and so, and I don't know, I was lucky I was born into wondering, and I realized that there's something about humanity that is intriguing and exciting, and there is so much potential in each human being, and so to me, if I could unlock that answer to the question why, and then how to close the gap, that seemed to be a purpose worthy of pursuit, and so that's why we started the company. And the wonderful thing, Steve, is that, well, obviously, we aren't our ideal selves all the time, and so there is an opportunity. That's a beautiful thing, that each human being has an opportunity that never ends to get better. And so I've come to this awareness that there is no end to better. And once I came to that awareness, it really helped me feel a lot better about getting older. I used to think, not even that long ago, as recently as five years ago, I was still thinking that maybe my greatest hits were behind me. Not that I have a lot of great hits, but I have a few good hits. And they can get better. I can get better. And I feel a growth spurt going on right now in my life. And so that's exciting. And so I see myself getting better. And I've always believed this, Steve. I've always believed that the human condition, I've been saying this since my early 20s, the human condition is such that we will always...

The Intuitive Customer - Improve Your Customer Experience To Gain Growth
Regret is a powerful emotion. One might not think it has a place in a marketer's messaging toolbox. However, you might be surprised to learn that in addition to being a powerful emotion, it can also be a powerful tool. The reason we regret things depends on the situation. We can regret a purchase we made. We can regret a purchase we didn't, too. What we regret and how we respond to it requires understanding how regret happens. Inside each of our minds, we have three selves. There is the Actual Self, the one we are despite any notions we might have. There is also the Ought Self. This self is the one with obligations and responsibilities. Then, there is the Ideal Self, which is who we want to be. Regret is often a conflict between the Actual Self and one of the other two. What we regret and who we blame has a lot to do with comparisons between these selves internally. Also, these comparisons might differ depending upon the customer segment to which the individual belongs. Therefore, to use regret as a marketing tool, it is essential to understand what comparison your customers are making and to what standard or value they hold. In this episode, we explain the psychology of regret, how it drives our future behavior, and what to do about it if it happens to your customers after buying your product or service. We also discuss how you can use it to create improved experiences with no regrets for your customers. What is your vision of yourself? What are your thoughts right now about your beliefs, your capabilities, and your health? How do you see yourself today? The answers to this question today determine how you will be tomorrow. The reason is that these answers comprise the climate in which your brain and body cells are reproducing. Healthy climate—healthy brain cells, healthy body cells. Poor climate—unhealthy brain cells, unhealthy body cells. Your thoughts and beliefs about yourself are creating the pattern for your continuing self. They do so by governing the climate in which these cells are renewing themselves. To lead a fairy-tale life, you need to maintain a fairytale life vision for yourself. You must raise your current thoughts and beliefs about yourself, your life, and your health. Certainly, you must raise your vision from disease to wholeness. We can always take a lesson from Jesus. When Jesus said to the man in the temple, “Stretch out your hand” (Mt. 12:13), he did not see a withered hand. He saw a hand filled with life, with strong muscles, nerves, and tendons. That ALL Might Be Edified: Discussions on Servant Leadership
It was a true joy and a great privilege to have former Division I NCAA basketball coach, current leadership coach and Gonzaga doctoral student, Adam Gierlach on this episode of the podcast. Adam and I share a passion for servant leadership which connected us together. Adam highlighted the importance of nurturing the attributes of care and curiosity to foster connections and relationships as servant leaders and shared a portion of his story of how he transitioned from basketball coach to leadership coach. He reminds us that leadership doesn't need to have anything to do with one's status in a hierarchy, and that as a servant leader it should be more about one's focus on commitment to the growth of others. Adam illustrates the importance of decoupling career growth programs from leadership development and creating a dedicated path to focus on servant first instead of leader first mentalities. This means we are coaching those around us and helping them achieve their ideal self. Adam educates us on the powerful concepts of emotional contagions in organizations and highlights profound research that emphasize the importance of being in tune with the emotions in our teams. The research shows that the lowest performing teams are often characterized as focus on self and as having the lowest emotional range, whereas the highest performing teams have the highest emotional range. This highlights that the case could be made for emotions as one of the most important thing to study in organizations. Adam also teaches the profound implications of negative emotions and even worse the numbing reaction of indifference. Leaders who listen to this material will be better prepared to build a positive community with the real individuals on their teams. Adam operates his own leadership coaching practice, Adam Gierlach Coaching, where he primarily works with athletic coaches and student-athletes, while also serving as a leadership coach for the Doerr Institute for New Leaders at Rice University, and the coaching company Ama La Vida, where he serves executives and leaders across a variety of organizations. He holds a Professional Certified Coach (PCC) credential from the International Coaching Federation (ICF), and is a certified leadership coach through Rice University's Doerr Institute for New Leaders. As a leadership coach, Adam helps leaders to become servant-leaders, and increase the capacity of individuals to lead. His work with others is a co-creative partnership that provides the time, space, and opportunity for you to learn about yourself, so you can serve others in more life-giving ways and act with greater impact. He transitioned into leadership coaching after nearly a decade in men's college basketball, serving as an Assistant Coach at Rice University and Cornell University. During his time at Cornell University, the program achieved their most successful season in eight years. Adam is a doctoral student in Gonzaga University's School of Leadership Studies, where he studies servant-leadership and leader development. Adam earned his M.A. in Organizational Leadership with a concentration in Servant-Leadership from Gonzaga University, and a B.A. in History from Rice University. He resides in Spokane, Washington. Twins Jordan and Devan escaped generational poverty and found themselves on the road toward embodying their ideal selves. Being educated, healthy and financially stable once was only a fantasy, but with the help of Youth Villages and strong support systems, Jordan and Devan have found themselves living their wildest dreams. Poverty, anxiety and depression can make it impossible to help yourself, but there will always be someone equipped to help you. As Youth Villages mental health professional Becky Smith explains, doing better is a skill, not a will -- and sometimes, we just need to be taught. Since the interview–Both Jordan and Devan now work for Youth Villages. Jordan, a Mentor Liaison, helps with recruiting, training, and managing volunteers who mentor the youth participating in Youth Villages' services. Devan, a Clinical Applications Specialist, provides IT support and training for the digital tools used by the clinical team. Jordan and Devan also participate in public speaking events representing Youth Villages and advocating for child welfare programs.
