Kalpana Raghuraman is choreograaf, danser, antropoloog en artistiek leider. In haar choreografie combineert ze vaak traditionele Indiase dansvormen met eigentijdse en Westerse dans. Ze was lange tijd artist in residence bij productiehuis Korzo, waar ze nu co-curator is. Met Gysèle ter Berg richtte ze in 2016 het dansgezelschap ‘Kalpanarts' op en ze maakte choreografieën voor onder andere ‘Triple Vision' en ‘Rebel's Cross'. In 2024 is Raghuraman aangesteld als Creative Associate van Het Nationale Ballet. Daar is ze co-regisseur van de herziene productie van ‘La Bayadère', die nu te zien is. In deze balletvoorstelling is de oriëntalistische blik op India uit het originele stuk in historische en culturele context geplaatst. Ook gaat haar nieuwste werk ‘Source' binnenkort in première, waarin ballet, Indiase dansvormen en westerse hedendaagse dans elkaar raken, uitdagen en inspireren. Femke van der Laan gaat met Kalpana Raghuraman in gesprek.
