The murders of The Blackout Ripper - indeed many of the crimes committed against women in World War Two - aren't often spoken about by historians of the conflict. That's changing. The co-host of Bad Women Hallie Rubenhold and regular guest Dr Julia Laite recently appeared on the WW2 podcast We Have Ways of Making You Talk to talk to James Holland about the wartime experiences of women. Here's chance to hear the conversation. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Greta Heywood is being strangled in a Piccadilly doorway when a passerby interrupts the Blackout Ripper, who disappears into the night. Greta survives the attack and the killer leaves vital clues as to his identity. The police are now closing in on their man - but can they catch him before he can claim more victims? Seamstress Doris Staples doesn't want to see Private John Waters any more... but the American soldier has other ideas. He goes to her workplace to make sure she doesn't "step out" with any other man... and carries with him a pistol. Men were expected to seek an outlet for their sexual appetites, but any women who saw multiple partners or wanted to exit a relationship faced stigma, hostility and deadly violence. Around Piccadilly she's known as "The Lady" - a quiet, rather remote figure. Widow Margaret Lowe tries to keep herself to herself and stay out of trouble - but trouble is never far away. The other residents of her building on Gosfield Street are used to hearing crashes and cries in the dead of night. Margaret sells sex in her flat, and with the coming of war that's an increasingly dangerous business. But when her clients turn violent, "The Lady" can't turn to the police and her neighbours seldom lift a finger to help. One night the man she brings the up stairs to her door is... the Blackout Ripper. Sources: Laite, Julia. Rube & Rake's new album begins with an ode to family and friends— togetherness—as Josh Sandu declares, against a hopeful bluegrass backdrop, “somewhere there's a place to lay my head.” Nine songs later, over a gently plucked guitar, he sings, “I won't go picking it up, the weight of the page is just too much.”Following the award-winning 2017 debut Back and Forth, the St. John's- based Sandu and Andrew Laite wanted to keep the core of that album's artistic successes—musical and collaborative harmony, folk storytelling—while recognizing audience expectations have intensified. “The first album ends up being the greatest hits of what you've done so far,” says Laite. “With record number two, you want it to be in the ring with the first one, only bigger and stronger.”For their sophomore album Leaving With Nothing, Sandu and Laite enlisted producer Adam Hogan, best known for his anthemic guitar work as a member of Newfoundland's most beloved indie-rock outfit, Hey Rosetta!. Recording in bits in houses around St. John's, Rube & Rake (& Adam) worked to expand the band's sound to include more instrumentation, pleasingly surprising time changes, and an overall expansion of intention.“We knew that this grouping of songs deserved a different treatment and wanted to introduce somebody with different instincts and tendencies,” says Laite. “We were confident that Adam would shed the right light on these songs while also maintaining our methodology.” “He's a very engaged person,” adds Sandu, “who had a lot of thoughts on every aspect of the recording process.”Sandu and Laite have always maximized the duo configuration—even singing together at a single condenser microphone, allowing for space and patience within the songs—but this is the first time they've consciously pushed outside it, to fill in that air with new tones and textures in the form of a full band. The resulting record evokes Blue Rodeo at its most rollicking, Great Lake Swimmers at their most thoughtful, and The Tallest Man On Earth at their most gently contemplative. The best distillation of all these themes, music and expectation and place, comes at the album's midpoint, in the five-minute “10-33”—CB radio code for “mayday”—where Rube & Rake reveal themselves to be ready for anything. “This ain't a common road, but you already know,” sings Sandu, “I will be leaving with nothing, a-dead-head I will go.”The collection of 10 songs comprising Leaving With Nothing fits comfortably in the folk tradition of road-worn tales and lost love laments told across an ever-changing, often lonely landscape. Rube & Rake is for late-night wind-downs, long drives, a walk by the water: solitary and steadfast, honest and true.#galeforcewins is an inspirational podcast with New episodes every Tuesday evening on Youtube or wherever you get your podcasts. You can also visit https://galeforcewins.com/To message Gerry visit: https://www.linkedin.com/in/gerrycarew/To message Allan visit: https://www.linkedin.com/in/allanadale/

In 1910, a sixteen year old New Zealander named Lydia Harvey boarded a steamship bound for Buenos Aires in the company of a husband and wife who promised her a life of glamor and ease. What resulted was a journey into the world of commercial sex that took her from South America to London, where she turned the tables on her traffickers and became a star witness in their criminal trial. Up until now, that witness testimony constituted Lydia Harvey's lone moment in the historical spotlight. In the sweeping historical dramas of migration, crime, and sexual commerce, she was, at most, a bit player, who steps fleetingly out of the shadows, speaks her two or three lines, and then disappears. In her new book The Disappearance of Lydia Harvey, the historian Julia Laite places Harvey's story centre stage. The book that results is a riveting narrative history that puts complex human faces on stories too often told through stock characters: histories of prostitution, of policing, of criminal justice and moral panics. It also is a meditation on the politics of storytelling and the ethics of historical “rescue”, of historians' efforts to give voice to the voiceless and to spotlight the neglected and obscure. In this episode of the History Workshop podcast, Julia Laite discusses her book with Marybeth Hamilton. Lydia Harvey was meant to disappear. She was young and working class; she'd walked the streets, worked in brothels, and had no money of her own. In 1910, politicians, pimps, policemen and moral reformers saw her as just one of many 'girls who disappeared'. But when she took the stand to give testimony at the trial of her traffickers, she ensured she'd never be forgotten. In The Disappearance of Lydia Harvey: A True Story of Sex, Crime and the Meaning of Justice (Profile Books, 2021), historian Julia Laite traces Lydia's extraordinary life from her home in New Zealand to the streets of Buenos Aires and safe houses of London. She also reveals the lives of international traffickers Antonio Carvelli and his mysterious wife Marie, the policemen who tracked them down, the journalists who stoked the scandal, and Eilidh MacDougall, who made it her life's mission to help women who'd been abused and disbelieved. Together, they tell an immersive story of crime, travel and sexual exploitation, of lives long overlooked and forgotten by history, and of a world transforming into the 20th century Pamela Fuentes is an Assistant Professor in the Women’s and Gender Studies Department at Pace University-NYC campus. Together, they tell an immersive story of crime, travel and sexual exploitation, of lives long overlooked and forgotten by history, and of a world transforming into the 20th century Pamela Fuentes is an Assistant Professor in the Women's and Gender Studies Department at Pace University-NYC campus. Lydia Harvey was meant to disappear. She was young and working class; she'd walked the streets, worked in brothels, and had no money of her own. On this episode we chat with Dixie Laite (Branding Expert - O Network, nickelodeon, and dametown.com) about branding, how to build one, why it is important, being a dame and how lingerie and the NYC subway helped her find her husband. We Now Join The Program Already In Progress is an interview podcast with a catch. Just because the mic’s are hot doesn’t mean it will make it on the air. Our show starts cold when the host Saul Colt and the guest get into a nice groove. Sometimes that is immediately and sometimes that can be 30 mins in. The result is you get an interesting conversation between Saul Colt and people he loves and admires without the awkward time at the beginning waiting for people to get comfortable.
Tieto kulkee salattuna. Laite ja sovellus tulevat kuluttajien saataville vuoden 2017 aikana. Johtava tutkija Timo Varpula VTT:ltä on kehittänyt laitetta. Turun yliopiston älypuhelin sovellus puolestaan analysoi sydämen pumppauksen mikroliikkeitä, eli sydämen mekaanista toimintaa. Sovellus hyödyntää puhelimen liikeantureita, ja analysoi kiihtyvyys- ja kiertokulma-antureiden tuottamaa tietoa. Tutkija Mikko Pänkäälä on kehittänyt sovellusta. Eila Koivisto on kärsinyt eteisvärinästä yli 30 vuoden ajan. Hän kokeilee älypuhelinsovellusta. Projektipäällikkö Tero Koivisto tekee mittausta. Turkulaisten laite on tulossa kauppoihin vuoden 2018 aikana. Turun yliopiston kardiologian professori Juhani Airaksinen arvioi älypuhelinsovelluksia eteisävärinän tunnistuksessa. Toimittaja on Teija Peltoniemi. Kuva Timo Varpula VTT.
Työ miehen tiellä pitää, hiki laiskan syödessä, otsasi hiessä sinun pitää..., näitä sanontoja piisaa. Olemmeko tehneet karhunpalveluksen kun puhumme aina ahkeruudesta? Työpäivässämme ei juurikaan ole hetkiä pään buuttaukseen. Onko joutilaisuuskin tulospaineistettu? Kaikki kotona -lähetyksen keskustelijoina työelämän ja loman tutkimuksen asiantuntija, Metalliliiton tutkimuspäällikkö Anu-Hanna Anttila ja sisäisen kokemusmaailman tutkija, psykologi Tony Dunderfelt. Keskustelua luotsaa Paula Jokimies. Anu-Hanna Anttilan mielestä sen, mitä ihminen omalla vapaa-ajallaan tekee, ei tarvitse olla tuottavaa vapaan viettoa ja valmistautumista tulevia työtehtäviä varten. Anttila mainitsee yhdysvaltalaisen sosiologi Richard Sennettin kirjoittaneen, kuinka vapaa-ajasta on tullut kulutustyötä - on pakko kuluttaa. Kuluttamalla osoitat, että sinussa on potentiaalia kuluttajana. Vietät vapaa-aikasikin tehokkaasti ja hyvin, matkustaen ja ostoksia suorittaen. Työmies sanasta puhuttaessa, Tony Dunderfelt tarttuu sanan loppuosaan. Hänestä suomalainen mieskuva on muuttunut ajan saatossa. - Uusi suomalainen mies haluaa viettää enemmän aikaa perheen parissa. Työnteko ei ole miehille enää pääasiallinen arvo. Dunderfelt haluaisi mielen hyvinvointivalmennusta oppiaineeksi esim. ammattikorkeakouluihin. - Päähämme virtaava tietotulva on kasvanut. Ihmisiltä puuttuu taito siivilöidä kaikkea, mitä mielessä tapahtuu. Samalla tavalla kuin olemme oppineet pitämään kehollisesta hygienasta huolta, tulisi oppia myös mielen hygieniaa. Yksinkertaisia keinoja, jo 30 sekunnin mini-tauot tyhjentävät mielen. Tämä on tutkitusti minimiaika, jonka aivot tarvitsevat, jotta pääsee irti stressaavasta asioiden kelaamisesta. Laite kuormittaa aivojamme huomattavasti. Syöte aivoihin tulee koko ajan koneelta ja vaatii meitä toimimaan tietyllä tavalla. Se kahlitsee jopa ajattelua.
