Kristian Matsson, aka The Tallest Man On Earth is a Swedish singer-songwriter whose poetic lyrics and gravely voice has captivated listeners since the release of his self-titled debut EP in 2006. His first full album 'Shallow Grave' (2008) and the follow-up 'The Wild Hunt' (2010) garnered the Swedish songwriter an international following, and he has aimed to evolve his folky sound ever since. His latest effort is the album 'Henry St.' (2023), an album on which he enlisted the help of a full band for the first time. Kristian Matson grew up in the Swedish countryside and came to be The Tallest Man on Earth in the country's diverse and low-key music scene. He often speaks of his weird little brain and a wild imagination, which actually stems from a heap of anxiety that he lives with everyday. Growing up, he struggled to tamp down his high-energy, especially in a culture that encouraged everyone to not stand out or draw attention to themselves. When he discovered the guitar, it felt like he found a vessel to harness all his energy, creativity and imagination. As a teenager, he found solace in the music of Bob Dylan, which led him to discovering other American folk artists like Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger. His world opened up when he found guitarists that used open tunings like Skip James and Nick Drake. His new album Henry St., was written and created in the aftermath of the pandemic. Kristian struggled with writing in forced solitude and found himself focusing too much on darkness. His inspiration returned when he finally got back on tour, where he began writing non-stop due to being back in motion and around other people. Human connection fueled the new album, which was produced by Nick Sanborn of Sylvan Esso in North Carolina. The two musicians' similarities create a beautiful chemistry on the new record, which is the first complete band album recorded by Tallest Man on Earth.Follow Basic Folk on social media: https://basicfolk.bio.link/Sign up for Basic Folk's newsletter: https://bit.ly/basicfolknewsHelp produce Basic Folk by contributing: https://basicfolk.com/donate/Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands

Talkhouse Podcast

On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got a pair of singer-songwriters who've taken interesting names for what are essentially solo ventures: Kevin Sullivan, aka. Field Medic, and Kristian Matsson, better known as the Tallest Man on Earth.  Matsson has been making music as the Tallest Man since about 2006, winning fans both with his largely spare, Bob Dylan-like songs and his incredibly forceful live shows. Though he's from Sweden, Matsson is definitely influenced by the American folk tradition, especially on his early records, like the classic 2008 debut Shallow Grave. He's since released a handful of excellent albums, and in this conversation with Kevin Sullivan, he drops some hints about a new one that he's really excited about to be released in 2023. In the meantime, the Tallest Man on Earth just released his first all-covers album, and though he downplays it a little bit, it's pretty amazing. It's called Too Late for Edelweiss, and on it he covers songs written by everyone from Hank Williams to Bon Iver to the National. Kevin Patrick Sullivan, who records under the name Field Medic, has long been known for a pretty Spartan approach to recording: Most of his songs have been made super simply, in the folk tradition but with decidedly modern subject matter. For his upcoming fifth album, which has the deliciously long title grow your hair long if you're wanting to see something that you can change, Sullivan decided to grow his sonic palette and bring in a producer. His confessional, put–it-all-out-there lyrics are still fully intact, of course. Field Medic will take these songs out for a headlining tour that features a full band this fall—a first for Sullivan. Check out the latest single from the new album, called “I Think About You All The Time.” This is a fun conversation given that these guys don't know each other, but they're quick to connect. Tallest Man was clearly an influence on Field Medic's sound, and we get to hear about a long-ago fan interaction between the two that did not, I repeat did not, involve marijuana. They also chat about finding inspiration when it's gone missing, about the wonder of the Milli Vanilli story, and about which of them wanted to be Bob Dylan in high school, and which wanted to be Lou Reed. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast and thanks to Kevin Sullivan and Kristian Matsson for chatting. If you liked what you heard, please follow Talkhouse on your favorite podcasting platform and social media channel. Rube & Rake's new album begins with an ode to family and friends— togetherness—as Josh Sandu declares, against a hopeful bluegrass backdrop, “somewhere there's a place to lay my head.” Nine songs later, over a gently plucked guitar, he sings, “I won't go picking it up, the weight of the page is just too much.”Following the award-winning 2017 debut Back and Forth, the St. John's- based Sandu and Andrew Laite wanted to keep the core of that album's artistic successes—musical and collaborative harmony, folk storytelling—while recognizing audience expectations have intensified. “The first album ends up being the greatest hits of what you've done so far,” says Laite. “With record number two, you want it to be in the ring with the first one, only bigger and stronger.”For their sophomore album Leaving With Nothing, Sandu and Laite enlisted producer Adam Hogan, best known for his anthemic guitar work as a member of Newfoundland's most beloved indie-rock outfit, Hey Rosetta!. Recording in bits in houses around St. John's, Rube & Rake (& Adam) worked to expand the band's sound to include more instrumentation, pleasingly surprising time changes, and an overall expansion of intention.“We knew that this grouping of songs deserved a different treatment and wanted to introduce somebody with different instincts and tendencies,” says Laite. “We were confident that Adam would shed the right light on these songs while also maintaining our methodology.” “He's a very engaged person,” adds Sandu, “who had a lot of thoughts on every aspect of the recording process.”Sandu and Laite have always maximized the duo configuration—even singing together at a single condenser microphone, allowing for space and patience within the songs—but this is the first time they've consciously pushed outside it, to fill in that air with new tones and textures in the form of a full band. The resulting record evokes Blue Rodeo at its most rollicking, Great Lake Swimmers at their most thoughtful, and The Tallest Man On Earth at their most gently contemplative. The best distillation of all these themes, music and expectation and place, comes at the album's midpoint, in the five-minute “10-33”—CB radio code for “mayday”—where Rube & Rake reveal themselves to be ready for anything. “This ain't a common road, but you already know,” sings Sandu, “I will be leaving with nothing, a-dead-head I will go.”The collection of 10 songs comprising Leaving With Nothing fits comfortably in the folk tradition of road-worn tales and lost love laments told across an ever-changing, often lonely landscape. Rube & Rake is for late-night wind-downs, long drives, a walk by the water: solitary and steadfast, honest and true.#galeforcewins is an inspirational podcast with New episodes every Tuesday evening on Youtube or wherever you get your podcasts. You can also visit https://galeforcewins.com/To message Gerry visit: https://www.linkedin.com/in/gerrycarew/To message Allan visit: https://www.linkedin.com/in/allanadale/

Nick & Helen welcome indie sensation Kristian Matsson (who performs under the moniker The Tallest Man on Earth). Kristian hails from Sweden and, of late, has burst onto the US music scene, building a huge fan base in an astonishingly short amount of time. He brings his stripped down, soulful sound (which often gets him compared to Bob Dylan) to the show. And relative newcomers The Spring Standards join us this week as well. They were childhood friends and reunited after college to continue creating their uniquely original sound; they're currently enjoying an underground following and growing buzz in the industry. Stellar music, great conversation and a moving E-Chievement Award story, too. That's this week, in eTown.

Birètte frèsche, paesaggi bucolici tra Toscana e Umbria e volumi SMODATI, what else? Ladies and gentlemen, Spinnit è tornato. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/spinnit/message

This week, we take the show to the countryside of Sweden for an intimate talk with Kristian Matsson, poet-songwriter and masterful acoustic multi-instrumentalist who has released five acclaimed albums and two EPs over the last decade and a half, performing as The Tallest Man on Earth. Growing up in the small hamlet of Leksand, a three hour trek from Stockholm, Mattson was in rowdier indie-rock outfits like Montezumas before breaking out with his own dreamier acoustic material - gaining international notice with his breakout solo offering 'Shallow Grave' in 2008. Tours with Bon Iver across North America gained Matsson an adoring audience in the states, where he ended up setting up shop in Brooklyn. Most often performing solo even on the biggest stages, Matsson is known to have seven or more intricate tunings for his guitars and banjos, and with his high, cutting voice and cryptic, nature-inspired lyrics, he has been compared to some of his heroes like Roscoe Holcomb, Bob Dylan and Paul Simon but with a Swedish-naturalist touch. Songs like “Love Is All” or “The Gardener,” while gaining tens of millions of steams on folky playlists, pack quite a punch, often detailing how the cold cruelty of the animal kingdom filters into human life with its many frailties. In 2019, Matsson found his marriage to a fellow Swedish singer-songwriter ending and he holed up in his Brooklyn apartment to write, produce and engineer his newest Tallest Man On Earth LP, 'I Love You. It's A Fever Dream.' Like Springsteen's eerie and emotional 'Nebraska,' Matsson's collection is a clear-eyed view of our current state of interpersonal (and even societal) isolations. Standout songs like the warm guitar and echoey harmonica opener “Hotel Bar” - though written before he knew what would happen with our current pandemic - seem to capture the lost closeness and romance of our very recent past, where one could fall in love with a new stranger every night in a new town and think nothing of it. Sequestered in a small house in the middle of Sweden since the world shifted last year, a new Tallest Man On Earth album is sure to be on its way. Admittedly Matsson is going a bit stir-crazy away from the road, but really he's grateful to be able to have the time to explore and create new sounds without any distractions. A fall tour of the states is in the works (fingers crossed), including an opening slot at Red Rocks joining Mandolin Orange and Bonny Light Horseman.

This week, I speak with Paul Johnson, who performs under the moniker Canyon City, about two of his latest singles - Catch Fire and Purple Horizon. Since its inception in 2015, Canyon City has become known for its distinctive whispery vocals layered over intimate acoustics orbiting candidly emotional storytelling. As Johnson self-released a series EPs and LPs over the last five years, the industry took notice, with Canyon City frequenting Spotify editorial playlists and winning praise from media like NPR, Paste, American Songwriter and more. His combined streams on Spotify alone surpass 100 million, with an average of 1.3 million monthly listeners. It's quite easy to see exactly why Johnson is a streaming giant. His songwriting—fusing conversational narratives with modern-folk textures in the vein of Gregory Alan Isakov, The Tallest Man On Earth, and Noah Gundersen—is rich in emotional detail. Now, Canyon City prepares to release Circling The Sun, a warm, inviting and sweetly cinematic EP primarily written and produced in household settings, save for a bit of recording at the local Library. He teamed back up with Nashville-based producer Zachary David who added his own homespun elements to the project. David, who is also a TV/film composer, used found objects (think couch kickdrums, t-shirt slapping snares and crumpled paper percussion) around the home when producing the EP, partially out of necessity due to Covid19. But the unorthodox arrangements only enhance the EP's lived-in aesthetic.
