The 6 Cs of History: Continuity, Episode #3 of 4. Starting in the late 1990s, historians like Deborah Simonton and Judith Bennett argued that if we take a step back a look at the longue duree of women's history, the evidence suggests that even as Europe's economies transformed from market places to market economies, women's work--and the value placed on gendered labor--was and continues to be remarkably (and frustratingly) consistent. There was not, in fact, a transformative moment ushered in by capitalism, industrialization, or post-industrialization for women. Even when factoring in race, urban/rural divides, and class, European (and American) women's labor was always valued less than men's, whether in the “household economies” or guilds of the medieval period, on the factory floors of the industrial era, or in the office cubicles of our more recent history. Today we're going to take a step back and look at the longer history of the gender wage gap, where we can see the continuity in women's work from the 14th century to the present.

Spain's Me Too movement started back in 2016, after a horrifying rape case that shocked the nation and mobilized its men and women. But the history of Spanish women's struggle for equal rights dates back to the mid-19th century. And as you will note in this conversation, it's a history that is closely tied to the struggle for freedom, to different political movements and their priorities, to different regimes and republics, and also to world events and global movements, such as the suffrage movement in Britain and America, and Fascism and Nazism in Italy and Germany, respectively. In this episode, I ask my guest, Dr. Marta del Moral, the following questions: How did women's conditions and rights in Spain from the 19th century to 1933 compare to other European countries? Were women deemed intellectually equal to men? And if so, were they given the same rights? When did Spanish women gain the right to vote and how did they effectively lose it? How did Franco's regime impact women's rights and conditions? What is (was) permiso marital? How were rapists treated in Spain? What was the punishment for a man who killed his adulterous wife? How did women's conditions and rights change after democracy returned to Spain starting in 1975? The Unwanted FIFA Kiss - how did this fit within Spanish women's long struggle for equal rights and Spain's "Macho Culture"? Dr. del Moral is a professor of gender equality at the Complutense University of Madrid. She directs the Research Group: Gender Relations in the Contemporary World: an interdisciplinary perspective from History, Geography and Law, where she has investigated women's participation in local governments. By the way, during our conversation, Dr. del Moral recommended this book: New Perspectives on European Women's Legal History. In this episode, Dr. del Moral tells us that the Unwanted FIFA kiss was an act of masculine power over a woman. And that's not the first time we've had this in our program. Back in 2021, when New York Governor Andrew Cuomo was accused of sexual harassment and shortly thereafter resigned, Dr. Carry Baker of Smith College explained to us that at its core, sexual harassment is about power! Guy Blaise is a Frenchman who has lived in the U.S. for a number of years. As a man who has dated and had sex with both European and North American women, he has an intriguing perspective. Here we delve into the differences between dating in France and the U.S., and the various questions raised by those, such as:Why are French women more likely to tell a man what they like or don't like in bed? How do you approach a European vs. North American woman, and why does that feel so different? Why is the fear of being creepy so prevalent in North America? After writing his first book, Love Like the French, Blaise also received hundreds of letters from American and Canadian women asking for dating and relationship advice. We also discuss the fascinating world of what kinds of things the women wrong in about -- and what all men can take from that.Memorable quotes from this episode:"You go to Barcelona, love is on the subway.""Treat your partner like she's your best customer.""In France, women are very outspoken.""Sex doesn't start in the bedroom."Guy's site: The French Perspective, which includes his books Love Like the French and Love Like a Man
According to Eurostat, 229 million women live in the EU. That's 4.6% more than men. However, fewer women make it to the top of society. When it comes to decision-making and board levels, women are under-represented. As the Gender Diversity Index shows, there are only 7% of female CEOs and just 35% of women on boards in EU top companies. On the 22nd of November, ten years later than expected, the European Union finally approved a directive that will force all member states to increase the presence of women on boards. Why has it taken so long to have a law aimed at closing the gender gap? How will this help women break the glass ceiling? On this podcast, host Alexander Damiano Ricci and co-host Maria Dios, discuss the approval of the Women on Board Directive in the EU. Also, Maria Dios interviews Hedwige Nuyens, Chair of European Women on Boards, a non-profit association that promotes gender equality in decision making and helps women across the EU accessing board level positions. The Inner Work of Inclusive Leadership “We need to be able to be so attuned to what's going out around you. And the only way to do that in a stable way is by being rooted in the way you are. In really understanding…OK, is this me? This constant evaluating.” In Episode 27, I am joined by Rose Cartolari, Founder and Director of RC Consulting, which specialises in Leadership Advisory and Executive Coaching, to discuss the inner work of inclusive leadership, primarily focusing on the importance of self-reflection and flexibility as a leader, and the dissonance between being a successful leader and an inclusive leader. Rose's interest in DEI is evident through her 30-year career journey. Rose has had experiences in management roles for large organisations such as American Express and UNICEF, and experiences teaching at elite business schools in the US and Italy, as well as co-founding and serving as COO of Scharper Pharmaceuticals SpA. Rose's experiences has empowered her to embark on a mission to bring diverse voices into all spaces where decisions are made. To accomplish her mission in promoting DEI, she is a TedX speaker, a co-author of Winning Mindset and she serves on the Executive Committee of European Women on Boards. She also sits on the Advisory Board of DiverCity magazine and is a member of the invitation-only Forbes Coaches Council. Upon exploring what DEI means to her, we speak about the importance of being an inclusive leader, such as the difficulties in balancing the intellectual friction between creating a culture of psychological safety and a culture that promotes freedom of speech, and the challenges technology and global ways of working bring to leaders in the DEI space. As we explore in our conversation, there seems to be a disconnect in what is required from leaders - as an inclusive leader, it is important to show humanity and vulnerability to your employees, but as a successful leader, it is important to show competence. The difficulties in balancing these intellectual frictions are what is dampening the efforts of leaders to fully embrace diversity, equity and inclusion.Rose mentions that in order to help them overcome these difficulties, it is imperative that there is a renewed focus on empowering leaders, not on fixing them in the DEI space. To finish our conversation, I ask Rose about how leaders can learn to embrace the inner work of inclusion. She believes it lies greatly on self-reflection, having that courage to take that step towards inclusion, receiving support and encouragement from others and leading with empathy. As such, leaders can then become someone who is reliable, trustworthy and influential, but it takes courage to make that step towards diversity, equity and inclusion. She finishes insightfully by saying that we should focus on ‘not carrying leaders but really coaching them, not fixing them but empowering them'. By doing this, we are taking a step further in promoting and perfecting the inner work of inclusive leadership. He goes to her workplace to make sure she doesn't "step out" with any other man... and carries with him a pistol. Men were expected to seek an outlet for their sexual appetites, but any women who saw multiple partners or wanted to exit a relationship faced stigma, hostility and deadly violence. I have been a fan of today's guest since I first saw his mind-blowing film, Night Watch years ago. Timur Bekmambetov is an established director, producer, and writer who has built a name for himself both in his home country, Russia, and here in the U.S., making films, music videos, and commercials. At first glance at his film, I became obsessed with Timur's work and his filmmaking style. He is the producer and director of Day Watch (2006), Wanted (2008), Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter (2012), Profile ( 2021), and many many more.Timur is a jack of all trades. His journey in the industry started with theater production design and soon he got the directing bug. While honing his directing skills, he took up producing which then led to movie production. One of my favorite of his films is the genre-bending Wanted, starring Angelina Jolie, James McCovey, and Morgan Freeman.Wesley Gibson (James McAvoy) is an office worker whose life is going nowhere. After his estranged father is murdered, he meets Fox (Angelina Jolie), who recruits him into the Fraternity, a secret society of assassins that takes its orders from Fate itself. Fox and Sloan (Morgan Freeman), the Fraternity's leader, teach Wesley to tap into dormant powers. Though he enjoys his newfound abilities, he begins to suspect that there is more to the Fraternity than meets the eye.Abraham Lincoln is reinvented as a vampire-killing president in this Timur Bekmambetov-directed action picture starring Benjamin Walker, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Rufus Sewell, and Dominic Cooper. Pride and Prejudice and Zombies author Seth Grahame-Smith adapts his own book for 20th Century Fox. Tim Burton produces alongside Bekmambetov and Jim Lemley.Timur's latest project is Profile. The film was initially released in Russia in 2018 and is set to be released in the US on May 14, 2021.Based on Anna Erelle's non-fiction book, In The Skin of a Jihadist, the film contextualizes our digital life and fears. It explores the role of digital spaces in the recruitment of young European Women by ISIS. British journalist, Amy Whittaker sets on this investigation by creating a Facebook profile under the alias of Melody Nelson along with a persona online of a woman who has recently converted to Islam. The results are thrilling and eye-opening.Profile was shot in a new film language called Screenlife. What is Screenlife?Screenlife is a new format of visual content that has grown from independent projects to full-length, world-renowned films, documentaries, and TV shows. Its main idea is that everything that the viewer sees happens on the computer, tablet, or smartphone screen. All the events unfold directly on the screen of your device. Instead of a film set — there's a desktop, instead of the protagonist's actions — a cursor. If you are involved in video production, cinema, or even video games, Screenlife is a new expressive environment for you, the potential of which is yet to be discovered. Before your eyes, there will be new tools to work with, such as the screen life recorder.Bekmambetov produced the Screenlife film Unfriended, in which the action takes place on the screens of protagonists' computers. With a budget of only $1 million, the movie raised $64 million at the box office worldwide. This new film language is extremely exciting. Timur and I discuss Screenlife, his visual style, his directing process, Hollywood politics, and much more.Enjoy my conversation with Timur Bekmambetov.

On Oct. 17, the Council of the EU approved a law to improve gender balance on corporate boards. The development comes 10 years after the European Commission first proposed the rules, and occurs at a time when many companies face pressure to increase diversity on their boards and management teams. In this episode of the ESG Insider podcast, we look at what the new law means for companies, investors and women. "If we want to be sure that women have equal rights, but also if we want to ensure that companies have the best potential leads in their executive committee and their boards, you really need to tap into all talent," Hedwige Nuyens, Chair of European Women on Boards, a lobby group, tells us. In the episode we also talk to Miriam Marra, Associate Professor of Finance at Henley Business School in the U.K., who explains the role of gender quotas in improving gender balance on corporate boards. And we speak to Martin Winner, Professor for Business Law at the Vienna University of Economics and Business, who tells us how the new law could encourage EU countries lagging on board diversity to take action. We'd love to hear from you. Feminist Question Time with speakers from Hungary, Norway and the UK Women's Declaration International (WDI) Feminist Question Time is our weekly online webinars. It is attended by a global feminist and activist audience of between 200-300. The main focus is how gender ideology is harming the rights of women and girls. You can see recordings of previous panels on our YouTube Channel. WDI is the leading global organisation defending women's sex-based rights against the threats posed by gender identity ideology. There is more information on the website womensdeclaration.com where you will find our Declaration on Women's Sex-based rights, which has been signed by more 30,000 people from 157 countries and is supported by 418 organisations. This week's speakers: Borbála Juhász - Hungary - Hungary: anti gender ideology raised to state level: Phase II. - Since my last appearance on WDI FQT Hungary witnessed the outbreak of the Russian-Ukrainian war and we had a general elections in the spring of 2022 where populist leader Viktor Orbán won again with a 2/3rd majority. His overwhelming success -while the country is called a non-democratic state by the European Parliament-is due to several reasons, one being its family policy and its strong, conservative ideological stand. In my presentation I will tell the second part of the "Orbán story". Bio: I am a feminist historian, right now working at a state elementary school in Budapest, Hungary. I worked at the Hungarian Women's Lobby for 14 years both as a volunteer, as a leader and as an employee. I was the vice-president of the European Women's Lobby for 2 years. I also work as a freelance gender policy expert (in its original sense). My main interest in women's rights are: the fight against prostitution, women's history, women education and women in decision making. I live in Budapest with my daughter. Christina Ellingsen - Norway - Update from Norway Claudia - UK - Censorship in the visual arts and how that has enabled the attack on feminist artists - I will give a brief introduction to my practice as an artist, focusing on my feminist practice. I'll set out the problems I have encountered when showing the work, including experiences of censorship since 2010 and 'de-platforming,' since 2019. I will analyse how the increasingly censorious environment in the visual arts has led to and enabled the attempted silencing and 'de-platforming' of feminist artists - from the least experienced students to most experienced practitioners. Bio: Claudia Clare has worked full time as an artist-potter since 1988. She is known for making big pots that record women's histories and support campaigns against men's violence towards women and girls, especially in the sex trade. She is the author of 'Subversive Ceramics,' Bloomsbury 2016. Disclaimer: Women's Declaration International (WDI) hosts a range of women from all over the world on Feminist Question Time (FQT) and Radical Feminist Perspectives (RFP) and on webinars hosted by country chapters – all have signed our Declaration or have known histories of feminist activism - but beyond that, we do not know their exact views or activism. WDI does not know in detail what they will say on webinars. The views expressed by speakers in these videos are not necessarily those of WDI and we do not necessarily support views or actions that speakers have expressed or engaged in at other times. As well as the position stated in our Declaration on Women's Sex-based Rights, WDI opposes sexism, racism and anti-semitism. For some reason Simon and Nic are really happy this week, possibly it's the sunny weather, but more likely it's finally seeing an England football team win a major tournament. We share our stories of jubilation, tears and glorious lobbed goals from the final of the European Women's Championship. After descending from cloud nine, we dive into a legal dispute between a woman and her insurance company who refuse to pay for her to get leg lengthening surgery, and discuss the some of the issues in the German health system. We celebrate the lucrative legal victory of an underdog Berlin tenant over their longtime landlord, and Nic confesses his fear of German numbers. Finally, we learn of the demise of one of Germany's favourite hobbies: finding a bargain. With many shops choosing to discontinue paper advertising, we ask whether the schnappenjager is an endangered species and why Germany should stop using the word porno in it's headlines. For those of you looking to support Ukraine or the many refugees currently fleeing the conflict, please take a look at these different charities and consider donating if you can:Ukraine Crisis Media Centre - A list of different donation pages to help the Ukrainian military response.Disaster Emergency Committee - Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal Save the ChildrenÄrzte ohne GrenzenImage CreditPhoto by PixabayTheme tune courtesy of Kloß mit Soß
“When you start defining diversity in a broader sense, usually you will find a lot of people who are passionate about one element. Maybe they have experienced exclusion because they are a certain age, or have a certain number of years at the company, and they don't feel like they're taken seriously or listened too. Getting people engaged in one element is important, and that's where the wave starts coming and the train leaves the station and can't go back.” In Episode 23 I am joined by Kristen Anderson, Vice Chair of European Women on Boards, to discuss the myth of meritocracy, how organisations can start their DEI journey, and how to gather buy-in from employees who may not immediately understand the need for DEI. Kristen's background is in Chemical Engineering, spending a lot of her career in the technical side of the food industry, working all over the world for big companies such as Kraft and Coca Cola, leaving her native USA to work in Australia, Germany, and China before settling in Italy. Working for Barilla in Italy, Kristen started her official DEI journey, joining their maiden DEI Board before eventually becoming their Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer. We start our conversation with Kristen offering career advice on how to join the DEI field and make progress. She then offers advice for any organisation on how to start their DEI journey, emphasising to walk before they run. This includes advice on how to get that sought after buy-in from employees who may show hesitance towards DEI initially, by making it clear how inclusion is relevant and beneficial to everyone. Getting people interested in one element of inclusion, whether age, gender or race etc., is the first step to getting them to have a broader understanding. Since her role at Barilla, Kristen has retired from the food industry and is now the Vice Chair of European Women on Boards – a non-profit focusing on gender diversity in decision making in Europe. We talk about the crucial work that EWoB does, including how they work with men as allies and believe including everyone is key to improving gender diversity. Meritocracy is a concept Kristen and I both come across regularly in our work. We discuss the ‘myth of meritocracy' and Kristen shares her idea of ‘mirrortocracy' instead, how people reflect their biases and social bubbles instead of purely basing decisions solely in merit. Bias isn't just something external though, Kristen shares her experiences of the female leaders she works with having internal biases against themselves where they often don't realise their full capabilities. We close the episode by discussing what organisations can do to increase their gender diversity and support female leaders, including the support EWoB provides leaders and organisations.
