This week we dig into both LDS and FLDS teachings, and learn about The School of the Prophets, a group composted largely of FLDS polygamists who believed strongly in the gift of personal revelation. And a revelation in 1984 would lead to the murder of a young Mormon wife and their baby. CLICK HERE TO WATCH MY NEW SPECIAL ON YOUTUBE! Almost a year ago, noted Latter-day Saint historian and prodigious researcher D. Michael Quinn died at age 77. Quinn, who retained his belief in the founding events of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints until his death, was pressured to resign from Brigham Young University and subsequently excommunicated from the faith in 1993 as part of the famed “September Six” for his writings about women and the priesthood, as well as about post-Manifesto polygamy. For the past 11 months, friends and fellow academics have discussed the scholar's legacy. On March 25, many of them will gather at the University of Utah for a one-day conference to examine and celebrate Quinn's life. In addition, Signature Books recently published a new biography of Quinn by historian and archivist Gary Topping. Titled simply “D. Michael Quinn: Mormon Historian,” the book helps flesh out the multiple aspects of Quinn's identity as queer, Chicano and fiercely independent. Meanwhile, Barbara Jones Brown, Signature's new director, is researching Quinn's unpublished memoirs, discovered by his children after his death. On this week's show, Topping and Brown examine Quinn's life and legacy, his battles with the faith's hierarchy and with his own identity, as well as his unwavering commitment to an honest telling of Mormon history and how he was ahead of his time.

You might recognize Marc from a previous episode we filmed with him (see below) but what you might not have realized is that the Utah War is a passion for Marc so we eagerly jumped at the opportunity to film this episode with him! We talk polygamy, civil war, guns, artifacts from the war, etc.

Podcast Content -- Drawing on decades of research and analysis, Dr. Bruce Van Orden offers the “life and times” of Willam Wines Phelps (1792-1872), one of the LDS Church's and early Utah's most influential figures. In this fast paced interview Van Orden weaves a myriad of new details and insights regarding a man who worked “shoulder to shoulder” with LDS Church founder Joseph Smith, and justifiably could be described as a fellow creator of early Mormonism. Phelps was an intellect, chronicler, journalist, master printer (he brought the first printing press to Utah), doctrinal provocateur and a political strategist (he was the ghost writer for Smith's 1844 U.S. Presidential platforms and publications). Besides all of this, he was a lawyer, a poet, a hymnographer--with 15 hymns in the current LDS hymnal--and was Utah's first official weatherman/meteorologist. Phelps' life story serves as something of a “hinge,” between pre-Utah Mormonism under Joseph Smith, and the more pragmatic and geographically expansive church under Brigham Young. Readers and listeners will gain a deeper understanding of the religious devotions, the bold political worldviews and the millennial “fire in the bones” convictions that permeated early Anglo-American Utah. A state of mind that, in less than a decade, would come in conflict with a much stronger and more determined United States. As a longstanding member of the Council of Fifty, and as first Speaker of the House in the Provisional State of Deseret (two sessions), Phelps contributed much of the written political thought encountered in early Utah, including the 1849-50 statehood application under a banner of “Deseret,” which name Van Orden believes was suggested by Phelps. Van Orden speaks of Phelps' interactions with Brigham Young, his vision for an educational system for Utah (including the creation of the University of Deseret), his ouster from the Deseret News by editor Albert Carrington, his contributions to the creation of the Deseret Alphabet, and his long standing role as the serpent in the church's endowment ceremony. Guest Bio: Dr. Bruce Van Orden is an emeritus professor of Church History and Doctrine at Brigham Young University. He received his Ph.D., M.A and undergraduate degree from BYU. He has been a member of the LDS Church's Curriculum Committee and has authored many articles and books on LDS History, including Prisoner for Conscience' Sake: The Life of George Reynolds, as well as this biography of Phelps. Shortly after retiring, Van Orden and his wife spent seven years as LDS Church ministers to inmates at the Utah State Penitentiary in Draper. After Joseph Smiths Vision of God the Father and Jesus Christ The Son, he spent the next 3 years being much of a normal teenage boy. Although he had attracted some attention good and bad, he was still able to leave a mostly normal life. All of that would soon change as he sought God in prayer one evening. There he asked good for forgiveness and asked for another Heavenly visitation. He received it as Moroni visited him 3 times that night. The next morning, while working, his father noticed he was struggling to keep up and looked pale. His father instructed him to go home. On his way him, crossing the fence, he collapsed. He awoke to Moroni, again telling him to tell his father all that had transpired. Joseph did as Moroni instructed and his father told him it was of God and to do all that was asked of him. Joseph spent the next 3 years trying to obtain the gold plates, being denied each time. At first he had been tempted to use the gold for earthly gain. Each year he came back, he was more prepared but still not fully committed. On the third visit, Moroni told him he had one more opportunity to align himself with God's desires or he would never obtain the plates. Joseph spent the next year figuring out exactly what God wanted of him. As instructed, he brought someone with him to obtain the plates, that was his wife Emma. Knowing that people were out to get him and the plates for their own personal gain, he hid the plates in a hollow log. The next day, he was able to get them back to the house, but not without some physical altercations. From there his life would be a constant uphill battle as he began the life of being a prophet. Martin Harris, was approached by the prophets mother about financing the publishing of the Book of Mormon. After much prayer and consideration, he decided that he would and became heavily involved in the translation process. Martin Harris had his struggles as he yearned to have proof of the plates. He believed Joseph to be a prophet and believed he had the plates but struggled to keep his wife and family at bay as they constantly battered him about how he was going to lose all of his wealth for this visionary man. Martin pushed forward and even after losing the 116 pages of translated manuscript, he repented and continued doing the work of the Lord. Joseph, also repented of trusting in man rather than The Lord. Joseph regained his ability to translate and the work continued.

The Immanuel David Cult! Not much has been written about Immanuel David compared to more notable cult leaders like Jim Jones or David Koresh - but he was just as delusional and, in his own way, just as destructive. Immanuel David was born in the late 1930s to seemingly normal parents - he had what was likely a great childhood - and then, not long after converting to Mormonism, he decided that he was the REAL prophet that should lead his new religion. After the LDS church excommunicated him, Immanuel David created his own church… and went off to live on a communal compound where a group of people, including his wife Rachel and their seven children, would worship him - not as God's prophet anymore - but as God in the flesh. In true cult leader fashion, he gave his followers biblical names and tricked them into giving him money while they all waited for the US government and the LDS faith to collapse, and for Immanuel to rise up out of the ashes and lead a new church. And then David's rein as cult leader came to end in 1978 in a very dramatic and horrifying way. This week we’ll also examine into some of the fringier aspects of Mormonism’s theological history, as some of these elements lead to the construction of David's cult. And we'll give a brief overview of a few other FLDS cults, on today's messianic edition of Timesuck. In June 1834 Zion's Camp members dug up an "Indian Mound" the significance of which has been debated ever since. The Joseph Smith History, Vol. 2, p. 79-80 would lead a reader to believe Joseph Smith wrote in his diary the partial skeleton unearthed was of "Zelph" a white Lamanite who fought in the final battle between the Lamanites and Nephites. However, the actual source is seven journals, many written years after the event, with conflicting information. This event is used by some to show Book of Mormon events took place in North America. Only those who look at the event superficially would come to such a conclusion.

What objects will carry the Church into the future? Let's discuss.
In 2019 Professor Peter Lineham was made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to religious history and the community. And that honour is well deserved. Few, if any scholars in the field of religious history in New Zealand have the sweeping knowledge and intimate understanding of religion in Aotearoa. He's written about Māori prophets to Catholic missionaries to LDS History over the period of his distinguished career. Peter's fluency and his impressive breadth of understanding of Mormon history highlight the issues arising out of an American church who are in a complex relationship with New Zealand Māori.

On this episode, we start off with a discussion about the history of Mormon temples. This launches us into a discussion about the resources necessary to build such a structure, as well as how they paid for by the church. After that we discuss 6 pages in the History of the Church that sound balls to the walls crazy, I wonder what was in that anointing oil. This leads us into a question about a bigger Mormon history issue, is there a naturalistic explanation for the miraculous angel and dead prophet sightings of the Kirtland Temple dedication ceremony? The episode concludes with a discussion about Ollie and Joe’s friendship, as well as the overarching problem with Mormon Temples. THE CHURCH TEST OATHS Permalink: http://www.blogtalkradio.com/thekingdomofgodornothing/2016/06/10/the-church-test-oaths-of-the-lds-church-on-zions-redemption-radio-06-09-2016 Surely we ought not to be obliged to declare what we believe or do not believe as the price of suffrage. Our consciences are at least our own. (George Q. Cannon, Des. News, Feb. 21, 1890) A religious test oath is contrary to the rights of conscience as given by God. The conscience has its obligation. It is one of the principle rights and privileges of freedom. An article of Mormon faith is that “We claim the privilege of worshipping Almighty God according to the dictates of our conscience, and allow all men the same privilege.” It is the creed of the Latter-day Saints to follow their own conscience–secondly, to allow others the same privilege. A religious test oath is a contradiction to both. Politically such an oath is just as wrong. Such illegal test oaths were once used by the Government. During the debate on such practices with the Edmunds-Tucker Bill, Senator Vest made this statement: The whole spirit of this test-oath legislation is wrong; it is contrary to the principles and spirit of our republican institutions; and whenever the time comes in the Territories or States of this Union that test-oaths are necessary to preserve republican institutions then republicanism is at an end.” Zions Redemption Radio airs Monday through Friday starting at 11pm Utah Time. www.thekingdomofgodornothing.com Read along at https://www.facebook.com/notes/mark-lichtenwalter/compromise-and-concession-by-ogden-kraut/10157014275495344
