Universal once again pairs two of its iconic performers in one film. This time a returning Bela Lugosi as Ygor is joined by Lon Chaney Jr as the Monster. Would the man better known for turning into a wolf be able to fill Karloff's boots? We have a fun discussion of what, to be honest, might be the nadir of the Frankenstein series. Please enjoy this Split Zone Duo Patreon special from our miniseries "Dead Letters." Initially released in July 2022, the three-episode series is a scripted-ish look at college football programs that had enormous success or potential and then ran into problems of either their environment or their own making. The first episode is about the Tulane Green Wave, who were once a contemporary of (and a threat to) LSU in Louisiana college football. Then one university president set about changing that. Here is the story of what happened before and after, along with an interview with Tulane historian Lenny Vangilder. If you enjoy this episode, you might enjoy more of what we do at splitzoneduo.com. After fading from view in the UK after "Strange And Beautiful" (a top 10 hit in 2002), Aqualung was hardly consigned to the legend of the one hit wonder. Instead Matt Hales went to make his name and build his career in the USA - much of it through hard, steady touring - the opposite of his “instant success” in the UK. Aqualung bucked the trend for under-achieving British acts through the naughties, selling several hundred thousand albums and becoming darlings of the cool celebrity crowd, from appearances on Jay Leno's Tonight show to Grammy nominations and cool celebrities attending his shows. Matt Hales became what he calls “inadvertently cool”. How did that happen? By not compromising for one thing. “I tried compromising at one stage, by writing hits and giving the A&R guy what he wanted, but it made me unhappy. So I made the quietest music I could, my Idagio, my quieter version of Pet Sounds. That turned out to be successful anyway!”Hales also established a parallel music career by becoming a successful, sought after writer-producer: collaborating with Lianne La Havas (he produced her superb debut album), Bat for Lashes, Tom Chaplin, Mika, Paloma Faith, Disclosure and many others. This has set Matt free from the curse of every commercial musician out there i.e. not attached to having a hit. Still, despite being a collaborator for hire, Hales has released no less than seven albums as Aqualung. The most recent, Dead Letters, is something truly special. When I heard it I immediately invited Matt on the show to get the inside story on his rather unusual career journey. Hales is often compared with the great & the good, from Radiohead & Coldplay, to Elton John and Talk Talk. It makes sense when you listen to Dead Letters, an album in which he has let all of these influences come to the surface:“This is a record where I am paying homage to the record collection that I was raised on. There is Elton, Stevie Wonder, Bread, Toto - Pet Sounds of course, that's the muesli I was raised on”. And if you thought the key change is dead in pop music, then Matt Hales is out to prove you wrong on Dead Letters. As he mentions in our conversation, he can literally “do anything he wants”.Perhaps that's the very definition of musical longevity.Support the showGet more related content at: https://www.songsommelier.com/

"The Church That Was Dead" If Christians today can't learn from the Christians of old, we're bound to make the same mistakes. And we'll also miss out on nurturing the kind of faith Jesus wants us to have. We can strengthen that faith through interior examination, contemplative practices, and remaining connected to a church community. Miss our Sunday service? Listen in to Pastor Heather's message in Wk 5 of our series, "Letters to Churches."
The Hitchings family experience strange new phenomena, as drawings appear on the walls and rooms are violently trashed, but strangest of all are handwritten letters that appear, seemingly from Donald the poltergeist. Meanwhile ghost hunter Harold Chibbett makes progress in his attempts to communicate, becoming convinced he is on the verge of discovering Donald’s true identity. Danny assesses the new developments, alongside experts Ciaran O’Keefe and Evelyn Hollow. How can these things be possible? Are there other more human explanations for what is going on? Written and presented by Danny Robins, starring Dafne Keen (His Dark Materials), Toby Jones (Detectorists), Burn Gorman (Torchwood) and Alice Lowe (Sightseers), with original theme music by Mercury-nominated Nadine Shah and Ben Hillier, this gripping 8-part series interweaves a chilling supernatural thriller set in 1950s London with a fascinating modern-day investigation into Britain’s strangest ever haunting – a mystery unsolved… until now. On assignment for a small-town newspaper in rural Pennsylvania, rookie reporter, Jessica Weible, meets Joan Swigart, a creative fireball and “pioneer in print.” As the two women forge a relationship based on their passion for storytelling, Joan reveals a mystery that she had discovered years ago, but had never solved—a pile of dead letters found in an abandoned general store, just before it was torn down. Joan gives Jessica the letters, each stamped and dated over a hundred years ago, and encourages Jessica to investigate the untold stories of the people and places contained in each one. What begins as yet another assignment for the reporter, a young millennial who relies happily on email and texting as the primary means of communication, develops into a heartfelt mission to tell the story of the people and places in the letters. The young reporter’s journey takes unexpected twists and turns through the quiet lumber towns of Pennsylvania, the early American settlements in Massachusetts, the bustling crowds at Ellis Island, the violent strikes at the Passaic textile mills, and beyond. Dead Letters is an intimate portrait of small town America and the people who, at times, risked everything in pursuit of economic prosperity, religious freedom, and social equity. Jess Weible is a freelance writer and reporter. She is also a founding editor for The Watershed Journal, an inclusive, regional literary magazine for the western Pennsylvania wilds. Jess leads two writing groups, the Writer’s Block Party and the Rebecca M. Arthur’s Young Writers. She lives with her husband and two boys in Brookville, Pennsylvania. A new book from a local author explores a real-life mystery of unsent letters from a hundred years ago, the people who wrote them, and a glimpse into their lives. Jessica Weible, the author of Dead Letters, says it's the real story of one of her assignments as a newspaper reporter, when she was given a pile of unsent letters that were found in an abandoned general store just before it was torn down. She says it gave her a heartfelt mission to tell the story of the people and places in the letters, and she even got the chance to take some of those letters to the families of the people who had sent them. Before Chris disappears deep into Russia on assignment, we check all our dead drops for incoming correspondence with readers abroad, and find some gems, long forgotten and wedged way in the back. Enjoy tales of babywalling your identical twin, of vile things left in jars, of theme parks gone wrong, and of the time Nick Breckon played Dark Souls 3 alone with nothing but a bottle of rum.

Pocatello High School in Idaho is a beautiful historic school that has made the top ten on a very unique list. Pocatello is one of the top ten scariest high schools in America! There is more to this revelation than just whispered rumors among students in the hallways. Closed circuit TV has picked up strange anomalies. One would think a school in Idaho would not be a place where multiple deaths have occurred, but Pocatello is different. One of the deaths was even part of a twisted suicide pact. Come with us back to school as we explore the halls and classrooms of Pocatello High School. The Moment in Oddity features Dead Letters and This Day in History features the suicide of Nero. Check out our website: http://historygoesbump.com Show notes and video can be seen here: http://historygoesbump.blogspot.com/2015/06/hgb-podcast-ep-49-pocatello-high-school.html
This Monday is a brand new episode of Graphic Policy Radio, the show that mixes comics and politics. This Monday we're joined by comic creator Ronald Wimberly. Wimberly has a long career working on numerous series and with publishers such as Marvel, Vertigo, IDW and more! His work has been seen in many comics such as IDW's Black Dynamite, Marvel's She-Hulk, BOOM!'s Dead Letters, and so much more. His 2012 Vertigo release Prince of Cats, which he wrote and provided art, is a hip-hop retelling of William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. We'll be discussing all of the above, and more! We of course want to hear from you. You can call in with your questions, or Tweet them to us @graphicpolicy.

In this episode of The Comics Alternative, the third of what promises to be an unprecedented five consecutive shows for a single week, Derek and Andy W. discuss four new #1 and one-shot issues. First, they look at Christopher Sebela and Chris Visions's Dead Letters (BOOM! Studios), focusing on the story's clever use of narrative gaps and art-driven action. Then they turn to Shutter (Image Comics), a new series from Joe Keatinge teams up with debut artist Leila del Duca. The guys love the initial setup, but nonetheless wanted more story in this inaugural issue. From there they delve into JC De La Torre and Ray Dillon's Star Mage from IDW Publishing, and what promises to be an intriguing new sci-fi title. Finally, Derek and Andy wrap up with a long discussion of Richard Corben's latest adaptation, Edgar Allan Poe's The Premature Burial (Dark Horse Comics). They point out that the issue also includes an adaption of “The Cask of Amontillado” — in fact, “Cask” takes up more of the issue than does the titular feature — and that it works in similar ways to the other recent Corben adaptations of Poe for Dark Horse, leading up to the fall publication of the collection, Edgar Allan Poe's Spirit of the Dead (Dark Horse Books). The Two Guys had a great time discussing these new comics, and you can join in on the fun as well by lending your ear to this week's review show.
This week on the show we have Chris Visions, who Terence tackled and dragged into the studio by his hair. Chris is the artist on the book Dead Letters, which has issue one hitting the shelf this very Wednesday. Doing interviews with the Dollar Bin is a lot of fun. This interview is an example of said fun.
