After 18 years serving as a probation officer with the Lewis County Juvenile Court, Lee Montgomery '89, saw how easily kids without a strong support system found themselves getting into trouble. He had to do something to help slow the cycle of poverty and incarceration, so he started the Lewis County Youth Mentorship Program with a mission to inspire youth through meaningful relationships to make positive choices that build resiliency, encourage growth and enable them to pursue a successful future.

On the latest episode Jaime, Shawn and Pax celebrate our diamond anniversary with the flick Girls Just Want to Have Fun from 1985. Starring Helen Hunt, Sarah Jessica Parker, Lee Montgomery and Shannan Doherty, the flick was riffing on the Cyndi Lauper hit song, but became a crazy fun dance movie all of its own!
When he was 11 years old, Gabe DenBraber's parents revealed some stunning news: he couldn't play able-bodied sports anymore. Gabe was born with spina bifida, but played baseball for years. Then came two surgeries that compromised the use of his legs and with it, words that every parent would dread saying. Gabe grieved the loss of the game he loved and questioned his faith, but one day his Dad had an idea that would change everything: why not try wheelchair basketball. Quickly learning the sport, Gabe gained confidence as his skills improved. He also developed an unbreakable mindset that kept him going through falls, further surgeries, and other setbacks. In his junior year, Gabe's team captured a national championship and followed it by winning the NIT tournament the following year. This led to offers from several high-ranked college squads and Gabe choosing to play for the storied University of Illinois program, which has won 15 national titles. He has since tried out for the senior national team and been named a captain of Team USA's under-23 team. In this episode, Gabe shares how he:Decided that you can either let life take you or you can take lifeChanneled the belief of coaches Lee Montgomery and Steve Buchi to develop unshakeable confidenceUsed a rough regular season as fuel for a national championship runKept telling the world “yes” when it told him “no”Made the cut for Team USA U23 and helped the team win gold in Mexico as a captainChose to always get up after falling downConnected with a ball boy whose father was killed in front of him by a drug cartelFollow Gabe's journey on his Instagram channel and Twitter feed, and keep your eyes peeled for the Bigger than the Chair documentary on him that's coming soon.
Witches, vampires, ghouls and goblins! This week we're talking 1985 made-for-TV movie THE MIDNIGHT HOUR!!! Starring Jonelle Allen, Lee Montgomery, Shari Belafonte, LeVar Burton and Peter DeLuise, the midnight Hour is about five friends who accidentally unleash a Witch's curse on their small town and summon all the undead and a bunch of demons. It's a fun, very Halloweeny romp that's extremely light on plot, but very enjoyable. I'm dead, you're dying. Everybody should try it, get dead!
In this episode, Lee Montgomery, Associate Professor of Experimental Art and Technology at the University of New Mexico, discusses the intersection of artistic practice and the law. He reflects on the relationship between analog and digital communication, and how the law affects his artistic practice, and those of other artists. Get ready for another TITLE VERSUS TITLE face-off! But THIS time, it's ANTHOLOGY DEATHMATCH style! First, we're subjected to a deadly premonition, ghosts, a haunted mirror, a ventriloquist dummy...and golf. Which story survives the first deathmatch, in the classic anthology film from Ealing Studios, Dead of Night (1945)? Then, we jump ahead to Dead of Night (1977), for our second anthology deathmatch. This time, stories featuring time travel, vampirism and a ritual to bring a child back from a watery grave, battle it out in a three-way dance, to determine who comes out on top! And then from there, it's title versus title! Which movie reigns supreme and takes home the title as Dead of Night champion?
Here we go, everyone! An all-new episode of A Cure for the Common Craig. Adorable Animals All-Out Attack! Get those teeth gnashing, because this time, we're featuring RATS! And when you talk about rats in horror, you have to start with Willard (1971). Watch poor Willard finally gain some friends, as they scurry around on thousands of tiny little feet that do his bidding! Then get ready for the direct sequel, spotlighting a particularly clever little critter, returning from the first movie. That's right! We're talking about Ben (1972). And then from there, Crispin Glover brings some eccentric magic to a familiar story. Get ready for even MORE of Socrates and Ben, in the 2003 remake, Willard! Time to tear it up and prepare yourself for some rockin' rat action!

Since her first appearance on the show (episode 11), Virginia Lee Montgomery has been making videos out of hotel rooms. With insects. On a $200 budget. She is a Material Research Artist-in-Residence at the University of Texas at Austin Center for Dynamic and Controlled Materials and her solo show, The Pony Hotel, opened at Museum Folkwang in Essen on May 9th. Did I mention the insects? Lots of that on this episode.
My guest is Virginia Lee Montgomery, whose new solo show Pony Cocoon is up now at False Flag in Long Island City though March 24th. The show is titled after her new film, following the birth of a Luna moth from a disembodied blonde ponytail, a frequently used symbol in Virginia’s practice. Her films are diffused with these repeated visual motifs. Dripping honey engulfs an object; a power drill bores a perfect hole through the surface of an image; a narwhal’s horn pierces the Arctic water. Images become like recurring characters through her films, which unfold like a surrealist mind-map attempting to make sense of free-associative thought. Concurrent to her art practice, Virginia works as a graphic facilitator, meaning she travels the country diagramming the flow of ideas and concepts for a variety of corporate clientele. The influence of this work is clearly felt in the way she edits her films, taking seemingly disparate ideas and finding the ways they’re interconnected. We’d like to thank Virginia Lee Montgomery as well as Edwin Lewis, Alexander Heffesse, Jon Huddleson, Whitney Smith, and Mel Hyde at False Flag. You can see my portrait of Virginia in her show at www.williamjesslaird.com/imageculture as well as on instagram @william.jess.laird and @image.cultureYou can see Virginia Lee Montgomery’s work at www.virginialeemontgomery.com and you can find the press release for Pony Cocoon at www.false-flag.orgThis show is produced by Sarah Levine and our music is by Jack and Eliza.
Sarah Jessica Parker stars as a Chicago teenager who works her tail off for a spot as a dance on her favorite dance show on television, but spats with her dance partner and a potentially rigged contest makes for a great challenge to success, not to mention her father will not approve if he finds out about her pursuit. Helen Hunt, Shannon Doherty, Jonathan Silverman, and Lee Montgomery get supporting roles in this film that takes its title from the Cyndi Lauper song.

Artist Virginia Lee Montgomery grew up in the Bayou and now has a pretty weird day gig that takes her all over the country. (No spoilers, though). Recent work includes a collaboration with the Dark Matter lab at Yale, an installation of what she calls subversive currency at Sculpture Center, and a solo exhibition at Meyohas Gallery (both in New York). NPR, or Neighborhood Public Radio is an artists collective and community radio project founded in 2004 by multimedia artists and educators Lee Montgomery, Jon Brumit and Michael Trigilio. Acting as a traveling band of guerilla broadcasters, NPR personnel have hosted thematic broadcasts from San Francisco to Serbia, including a stint at the 2008 Whitney Biennial. What is Neighborhood Public Radio? Imagine a storefront community radio station open to you. You get access to the airwaves regardless of your qualifications or message. We caught up with the founders of the now-decentralized NPR team, in Oakland, Chicago and San Diego to talk about the technical, social and political aspects of broadcasting, and about their tattoos. As a special treat for our listeners we thought it would be fun to ask Lee, Jon and Michael to create a new Audio-Art piece for our Podcast series. The idea was simple. They would each create a composition that was no more than 5 minutes long, and we would layer all three parts together to create a single new work. Visit the link at the bottom to hear the results.
