In this episode, we talk with Rachael Sommer, a dedicated mother and caregiver from Cleveland, Ohio. Rachael shares the journey of her daughter Maddie, who was diagnosed with Hepatosplenic T-cell Lymphoma in October 2023, after several months of mysterious symptoms. Treated at Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus, Maddie's condition has profoundly impacted their lives.Rachael recounts their initial stay at the Ronald McDonald House post-diagnosis, highlighting the physical and emotional changes Maddie experienced. Maddie's extreme fatigue and breathlessness were particularly challenging, and Rachael emphasizes the importance of adjusting to a "new normal" while staying in constant communication with doctors. Rachael found solace in the Ronald McDonald House's facilities, specifically the fitness room, which helped her manage her own stress. The conversation shifts to the emotional toll on Maddie, who struggled with isolation from friends and the mental burden of not being able to participate in normal activities. Despite the support of friends and thoughtful gestures like sending cards, nothing could replace the physical presence of her peers. Rachael's creativity shone through when she set up a Google camera to allow Maddie to see her cats, Binks and Leon, while they were away.Rachael discusses the importance of recognizing and respecting individual emotional needs. Maddie's withdrawal from activities she once enjoyed, like listening to music, was particularly hard for Rachael, who feared losing her daughter's spirited personality. Eventually, Maddie slowly began to regain her sarcasm and interactions with her younger brother, Ezekiel, signaling a return to her usual self. The financial strain of Maddie's illness is another significant aspect of their journey. Rachael praises the support from various organizations, including Carrie's Cause, Fight Like A Dozer, and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, which provided crucial financial aid. This support allowed Rachael to focus on Maddie's care without the added burden of financial stress.Rachael also shares her career transition to consulting, driven by the need for greater flexibility to support her family. Her faith in God has been a cornerstone throughout this journey, providing spiritual strength and community support. Finally, Rachael reflects on the importance of savoring small moments of joy amidst the challenges. She encourages other caregivers to focus on what truly matters, finding moments of normalcy and joy, and maintaining hope and strength for their loved ones.Resources:Nationwide Children's Hospital, Columbus, Ohio: https://www.nationwidechildrens.org/Fight Like a Dozer: https://www.fightlikeadozer.org/Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS): https://lls.org/NMDP (formerly Be The Match): https://bethematch.org/The Bible Recap: https://www.thebiblerecap.com/National Bone Marrow Transplant Link - (800) LINK-BMT, or (800) 546-5268.nbmtLINK Website: https://www.nbmtlink.org/nbmtLINK Facebook Page:  https://www.facebook.com/nbmtLINKnbmtLINK YouTube Page can be found by clicking here.Thank you to our sponsors. In this episode we interview Heather Knutson, a registered dietitian from the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS). Heather shares invaluable advice on nutrition management post-transplant, emphasizing the critical role of caregivers in the dietary adjustments necessary during this period. We start by addressing the challenges that both survivors and caregivers face when transitioning back home. Heather points out the importance of preparation before the survivor arrives home, suggesting that caregivers can ease the process by shopping in advance and preparing meals that can be easily accessed and consumed. She stresses the utility of having ready-to-eat and easy-to-prepare meals and snacks available to accommodate the fatigue that is common in survivors.A significant portion of the discussion revolves around the evolving dynamics between caregivers and survivors. Heather advises on strategies to mitigate stress and potential strain on relationships, suggesting practical tools like setting reminders for meals and medications, and using apps like the LLS Health Manager to coordinate care and dietary tracking.Heather also dives into the specific nutritional needs of survivors, highlighting the increased protein requirements post-transplant and the importance of balanced, nutritious meals to aid in survivorship. She provides tips for ensuring safety in food preparation and handling, particularly for survivors with compromised immune systems. The conversation further explores the emotional and logistical support that can be provided by friends and family, such as organizing meal trains or offering help with household chores, to lessen the burden on caregivers. As we wrap up, Heather touches on the broader FREE services provided by LLS, including one-on-one nutrition consultations and meal planning support, aimed at managing side effects and improving the quality of life for survivors and their families. This episode offers a comprehensive look at the intersection of caregiving, nutrition, and survivorship in the context of post-transplant recovery, providing actionable advice and emphasizing the power of thoughtful, well-coordinated care.Resources:LLS Phone Number: 877-467-1936 LLS Website: https://www.lls.org/LLS Nutrition Website: llsnutrition.orgLLS Health Manager App: https://www.lls.org/article/lls-health-manager-app-available-nowFairlife Product Website: https://fairlife.com/Survivor Gregory Proctor's book Faith, Strength, and Courage: https://www.amazon.com/FAITH-STRENGTH-COURAGE-Overcoming-Adversity/dp/760919834XFood Safety Podcast Episode with Sue Hill: https://marrowmasters.simplecast.com/episodes/sue-hillNational Bone Marrow Transplant Link - (800) LINK-BMT, or (800) 546-5268.nbmtLINK Website: https://www.nbmtlink.org/nbmtLINK Facebook Page:  https://www.facebook.com/nbmtLINKnbmtLINK YouTube Page can be found by clicking here.Thank you to our sponsors. Devin: What do you see, JohnMatthew, as your superpower?JohnMatthew: My superpower is a committed life.“There are cities that are literally separated by a zip code; in one zip code, you may see a life expectancy of 80, 85 years of age and in another that butts right up against it, you may see a life expectancy of 65 years, 70 years of age,” explains JohnMatthew Douglas, a leading authority on social determinants of health in helping to define his discipline.Health is measured in many ways, but life expectancy is a simple, easy-to-understand barometer for the impact of social circumstances on population and individual health. Wealth, in other words, is “absolutely” and “intrinsically” linked to life expectancy, he says. One of the ways that individuals can play a role in reducing socioeconomic gaps that accelerate death and cause poor health is crowdfund investing–impact crowdfunding.“Within the United States, we have an environment within which 80 percent of business owners are white–actually, a little bit more than that,” JohnMatthew says. “Somewhere in the neighborhood of 14.5, 15% Hispanic, approximately 2.4% or so are Black-owned businesses, and then the rest are dispersed among our diverse population.”Noting that Black-owned businesses are perceived as having a higher rate of failure, he says, “This is occurring not because of a lack of will and desire and passion, great idea, great solution. But it's occurring because of a lack of access to the resources and tools and knowledge that an entrepreneur or small business would need to ensure their success.”Crowdfund investing is a tool we can all use to address this lack of funding.JohnMatthew consults with the Lonely Entrepreneur, “a SaaS platform that makes it easier for not only for Black and Brown communities of entrepreneurs but all entrepreneurs actually, to access the knowledge, tools and resources that they need to ensure their success.”By investing in diverse founders, we are directly addressing the social determinants of health in a constructive way toward closing gaps in health outcomes.JohnMatthew has developed his expertise and a successful career serving people because he has followed the counsel of Rev. Martin Luther King to have a “committed life,” making it his superpower.AI Episode Summary* Devin Thorpe interviews John Matthew Douglas, co-founder of Nello Health and I Press Forward LLC, on the Superpowers for Good show.* John Matthew Douglas is an authority on social determinants of health and explains that social determinants of health are about the environment we live in and the barriers that may hinder our health and well-being.* There is a connection between social determinants of health and life expectancy, both globally and within specific communities, with wealthier areas having longer life expectancies than impoverished ones.* Nelo Health is using technology and the metaverse to address social determinants of health and improve patient outcomes and the overall healthcare system.* Upstream interventions focus on addressing neglected social determinants such as education and economic empowerment to position individuals for a better life and reduce reliance on downstream interventions.* Crowdfunding can help address health concerns by providing funding to diverse founders who are traditionally excluded from capital markets, leading to positive impacts on health outcomes and communities.* John Matthew's superpower is living a committed life, inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s call to redefine greatness as an individual's capacity to serve others.* He shares an example of his mentorship program, I Press Forward, which successfully impacted the lives of at-risk middle school students through the collaboration of professionals, including Rear Admiral Ken Braithwaite.* The program helped improve attendance, behavior, and academic performance of the students, emphasizing the importance of passion, vision, and believing in oneself.* John Matthew can be reached on LinkedIn and through Nelo Health and I Press Forward LLC's websites. How to Develop A Committed Life As a SuperpowerMLK preached that one's goal should be to maximize service to others. He called that a “committed life.” Having given his life in pursuit of that ideal, subsequent generations–including JohnMatthew–have been influenced by his commitment to walking his preaching. In our conversation, JohnMatthew shared an anecdote to illustrate the power of leaning into a commitment to serving others. He recounts founding the mentorship program "I Press Forward" in 2012 at the behest of a public school teacher. Focused on rescuing middle school boys from troubled paths, the program was inspired by the challenges of crime, single-parent households, and poor attendance. The program's foundation rested on imparting soft skills, resilience, and leadership to students. A pivotal moment came when retired Rear Admiral Ken Braithwaite engaged with the program, sharing his experiences of meeting presidents and emphasizing that anyone, regardless of circumstances, can succeed in the United States.Over four impactful years, the program enhanced students' attendance, behavior, and academic performance, transcending the confines of their neighborhoods.By following JohnMatthew's example, you can make a committed life a strength that defines you, too. In so doing, you can make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Guest-Provided ProfileJohnMatthew Douglas (he/him):Biographical Information: John Matthew Douglas (JohnMatthew), with nearly two- and one-half decades of diverse healthcare industry experience, tireless work in social determinants of health (SDoH) offers perspective many may have not considered. EP 113: "A Chance to Make a Difference" Part 1 ft Jade-Addon Hall  Contributors: Comedian Ivan Martin and Lawyer/ Legal Contribitor Natasha Axelrod Like many of you, this past year has been eye-opening for me. The overwhelming inequities and systemic racism that continues to plague our nation left me wondering, “What I can do to help?” One area that became abundantly clear was the healthcare gap. In 2019, for example, we lost 73,000 Black Americans to cancer; the highest rate of any racial or ethnic group. Because of the exorbitant costs of cancer treatment, even with Medicaid, the gaps in healthcare are significant.  My friend Jade-Addon Hall was nominated for the 2021 Man & Woman of the Year Campaign, to raise funds for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS). I’m proud to announce that I have joined Team Cure Excellence in an effort to raise funds and awareness for ending blood cancers and providing equitable care for those who need it most.  We discuss why he asked me to join in the effort for raising money to LLS. We talk about how I was hesitant at first and why this is so important to me. This is part 1 of 2 episodes about LLS. Ryan LaFontaine’s path after graduation was always clear – he wanted to work for his family’s auto dealership group, which was established by his father, Michael Sr., and mother, Maureen, in 1984. By 2008, LaFontaine was named chief operating officer of the LaFontaine Automotive Group, which has since grown to encompass 39 franchises, 20 retail locations, a global vehicles division, a parts warehouse and five full-service collision centers, employing more than 1,300 individuals across Michigan. And he is a recognized industry leader, having served as president of the Detroit Auto Dealers Association (DADA) and recently named chairman of the 2018 North American International Auto Show, the youngest chairman in the show’s 111-year history. LaFontaine is also proud to guide the next generation of automotive industry leaders through the LaFontaine Automotive Internship Program, a 12-week immersive experience at his dealerships. And while LaFontaine’s career has been meteoric, he suffered a setback in 2008 when he was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma. LaFontaine took that very difficult experience and turned it into something positive. He had heard about a 10-week nationwide fundraising challenge to benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS). Even though he was fighting cancer and just had twin boys, LaFontaine and his sister, Kelley, decided to enter. “With family and friends at our side, we raised $228,000 for LLS, which was an all-time record,” he said. For his efforts, he was named the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Man of the Year in 2010. This successful fundraising effort propelled LaFontaine and his sister to go even further and create the U CAN-CER VIVE Foundation. The organization, which is run solely by volunteers so 100 percent of profits are donated to the cause, provides vital funding and support for local cancer research grants.
