The Shackleton replacement now started to become more urgent. For years the Air Staff and Ministries had argued over what type should replace the Shackleton, including variants of the Vulcan, Britannia, VC10 and Trident, before settling for the Nimrod in 1964 We return to Chris Gibson, author of the brilliant book 'Nimrod's Genesis' to learn how the process unfolded. At the end of World War Two RAF Coastal Command faced the same challenges of all the British military services, one of reduction, cutbacks and a return to a peaceful world. The threat from the axis powers had been effectively squashed but there was a new threat emerging, in the form of the Soviet Union. Coastal Command had to start learning about new adversaries once again, adapting and performing immediately, to protect British interests initially in the northern Atlantic, but rapidly elsewhere. For almost 60 Cold War years, the RAF relied heavily on two aircraft types, through various models, enhancements and sheer longevity. The Avro Shackleton and the Hawker Siddeley Nimrod. Chris Gibson author of the brilliant book ‘Nimrod's Genesis', joins us to help understand the new threat and explain to process the UK took to replace its old aircraft with new more sophisticated platforms. Last week we had General Assembly here in Memphis, and I was glad I didn't have to hobble through any airports on a bad leg. Call me selfish, but I was in a wheelchair last time I went through an airport and to have to hobble along feels just awful. Anyway, apart from all the meetings and happenings, it felt sort of like a homecoming. There, I saw people I don't see often, some I am glad I don't (just being honest) and others I wish lived more close by. I also saw some of our missionaries while there. I saw Chris Furr who is in Scotland and, apparently, he has gone native. He was wearing a kilt. I also saw our good friend Chris Gibson who works in Budapest. What exactly are they, as they do their work in strange places in the world, far from the country of their birth? They are not gypsies, moving around all the time, nor are they citizens of the lands in which they minister. They essentially are “resident aliens”. What I mean is, they are sort of permanent in a place that is not their home. They have civil liberties and protection from the government, but they can't vote; they may even blend in and look like the natives there, until they open their mouth and then you would know they are not from Hungary or Scotland. And yet, they move in and love a place, seek to bless it, work for the good of that place and do what they can, by their presence, to make Jesus known. We are talking about resident aliens this week because Abraham lived his whole life like that. And the Bible says anyone who knows Jesus is a resident alien in whatever city they live, no matter how long they have been there. This is a huge theme in the Bible, from Genesis through Revelation. It really explains the posture of faith as we minister to the city around us. This week we will talk about it. I hope to see you Sunday!

Devin: What do you see, JohnMatthew, as your superpower?JohnMatthew: My superpower is a committed life.“There are cities that are literally separated by a zip code; in one zip code, you may see a life expectancy of 80, 85 years of age and in another that butts right up against it, you may see a life expectancy of 65 years, 70 years of age,” explains JohnMatthew Douglas, a leading authority on social determinants of health in helping to define his discipline.Health is measured in many ways, but life expectancy is a simple, easy-to-understand barometer for the impact of social circumstances on population and individual health. Wealth, in other words, is “absolutely” and “intrinsically” linked to life expectancy, he says. One of the ways that individuals can play a role in reducing socioeconomic gaps that accelerate death and cause poor health is crowdfund investing–impact crowdfunding.“Within the United States, we have an environment within which 80 percent of business owners are white–actually, a little bit more than that,” JohnMatthew says. “Somewhere in the neighborhood of 14.5, 15% Hispanic, approximately 2.4% or so are Black-owned businesses, and then the rest are dispersed among our diverse population.”Noting that Black-owned businesses are perceived as having a higher rate of failure, he says, “This is occurring not because of a lack of will and desire and passion, great idea, great solution. But it's occurring because of a lack of access to the resources and tools and knowledge that an entrepreneur or small business would need to ensure their success.”Crowdfund investing is a tool we can all use to address this lack of funding.JohnMatthew consults with the Lonely Entrepreneur, “a SaaS platform that makes it easier for not only for Black and Brown communities of entrepreneurs but all entrepreneurs actually, to access the knowledge, tools and resources that they need to ensure their success.”By investing in diverse founders, we are directly addressing the social determinants of health in a constructive way toward closing gaps in health outcomes.JohnMatthew has developed his expertise and a successful career serving people because he has followed the counsel of Rev. Martin Luther King to have a “committed life,” making it his superpower.AI Episode Summary* Devin Thorpe interviews John Matthew Douglas, co-founder of Nello Health and I Press Forward LLC, on the Superpowers for Good show.* John Matthew Douglas is an authority on social determinants of health and explains that social determinants of health are about the environment we live in and the barriers that may hinder our health and well-being.* There is a connection between social determinants of health and life expectancy, both globally and within specific communities, with wealthier areas having longer life expectancies than impoverished ones.* Nelo Health is using technology and the metaverse to address social determinants of health and improve patient outcomes and the overall healthcare system.* Upstream interventions focus on addressing neglected social determinants such as education and economic empowerment to position individuals for a better life and reduce reliance on downstream interventions.* Crowdfunding can help address health concerns by providing funding to diverse founders who are traditionally excluded from capital markets, leading to positive impacts on health outcomes and communities.* John Matthew's superpower is living a committed life, inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s call to redefine greatness as an individual's capacity to serve others.* He shares an example of his mentorship program, I Press Forward, which successfully impacted the lives of at-risk middle school students through the collaboration of professionals, including Rear Admiral Ken Braithwaite.* The program helped improve attendance, behavior, and academic performance of the students, emphasizing the importance of passion, vision, and believing in oneself.* John Matthew can be reached on LinkedIn and through Nelo Health and I Press Forward LLC's websites. How to Develop A Committed Life As a SuperpowerMLK preached that one's goal should be to maximize service to others. He called that a “committed life.” Having given his life in pursuit of that ideal, subsequent generations–including JohnMatthew–have been influenced by his commitment to walking his preaching. In our conversation, JohnMatthew shared an anecdote to illustrate the power of leaning into a commitment to serving others. He recounts founding the mentorship program "I Press Forward" in 2012 at the behest of a public school teacher. Focused on rescuing middle school boys from troubled paths, the program was inspired by the challenges of crime, single-parent households, and poor attendance. The program's foundation rested on imparting soft skills, resilience, and leadership to students. A pivotal moment came when retired Rear Admiral Ken Braithwaite engaged with the program, sharing his experiences of meeting presidents and emphasizing that anyone, regardless of circumstances, can succeed in the United States.Over four impactful years, the program enhanced students' attendance, behavior, and academic performance, transcending the confines of their neighborhoods.By following JohnMatthew's example, you can make a committed life a strength that defines you, too. In so doing, you can make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Guest-Provided ProfileJohnMatthew Douglas (he/him):Biographical Information: John Matthew Douglas (JohnMatthew), with nearly two- and one-half decades of diverse healthcare industry experience, tireless work in social determinants of health (SDoH) offers perspective many may have not considered. You'll learn not just how to make investments via crowdfunding but how to make money doing it.Many impact crowdfunding investors focus on impact first. I admire the approach but note that a goal for maximizing impact is best accomplished by making money. It works two ways. A company that goes out of business has no impact after it dies. One that grows profitably can do unlimited amounts of good. Furthermore, if the investment delivers financial results to you, you can reinvest and do more good as an investor! If you're focused primarily on making money, you'll find this session helpful, too. After ten years of working on a specific disease, Chris Gibson's graduate school lab tested their treatment theory on an animal model. It not only didn't work, it actually made the animals worse. The experience prompted Gibson to look into how other tools and techniques could be brought to bear on biological programs. And so he quit medical school to co-found Recursion Pharmaceuticals where he is now CEO. In this episode, Gibson sits down with host Stan Gloss of BioTeam, about Recursion's mission to decode biology, radically improve lives, and set big goals to innovate across every stage of drug discovery. “If you set goals that are easily achieved, you default to using tools that have been used in the past. The only way you can force yourself to use new tools is if you set goals that are very hard to achieve if not seemingly impossible,” Gibson said. He talks about the company's use of 'omics technologies to answer the industry's present and future questions, their highly automated wet lab with robots, and Recursion's use of machine learning to understand biology as a complete system. Gibson also discusses the company's purpose-built datasets and the culture-first approach that helps foster more agility relative to larger, older pharmaceutical giants.Links from this episode: Bio-IT World BioTeam Recursion Recursion's Vision for the New Shape of Drug Discovery Trends from the Trenches boiler: Bio-IT World's Trends from the Trenches podcast delivers your insider's look at the science, technology, and executive trends driving the life sciences through conversations with industry leaders. Today we'll talk about the importance of patch testing, sun protection, and vitamin A retinol for skin care, as well as the toxic ingredients to be aware of. We also talk about the importance of getting enough sleep and recognizing one's skin type, as well as the benefits of leafy greens, lean meats, and omega-3s for skin care. Additionally, he discusses the importance of supplementing with Vitamin K2 for women over 35 and how intermittent fasting, physical activity, and stress management can help to roll back 3 years of biological aging. --Resources:Learn more on Chris's YouTube channelConnect with Chris on InstagramVisit thisishuso.com/rebel and use the code “REBEL25” to save $25Do you want more to empower yourself through healthy living? Today on Reset Renew Revive, Chris Gibson joins us to talk skincare and longevity. Your body thrives when you commit to a dynamic routine of exercise, balanced diet and good sleep. Chris discovered holistic medicine after he was plagued by cystic acne which he was able to eradicate through fasting. This inspired his first book Acne Free In 3 Days. This revelation sparked a lifelong curiosity exploring health and wellness. Chris's 3 day cleanse is proof that what you put in your body either creates problems or solves them. A holistic approach to skincare rejuvenates your skin from within instead of solely relying on topicals to mask a problem. Skincare marketing often claims that blemishes can be tamed with a single product but the reality is there are 9 distinct skin combinations so the wrong product can actually exacerbate the issue it promised to solve. In this episode you will learn just how easy it is to reclaim your health and subsequently heal your skin. “I'm currently sitting 100 feet away from a giant lab full of robots where we can do up to 2.2 million experiments a week,” says Dr. Chris Gibson, the Co-Founder and CEO of Recursion, a company whose mission is to create a more efficient path to drug discovery. You are going to hear a lot of mind-boggling numbers from Chris in today's Raise the Line episode, but they all boil down to this: advances in genetics, computing, artificial intelligence, mRNA capability and other technologies are all converging to accelerate the testing of drugs at an incredible pace. This is particularly good news for people with rare diseases who are often in a race against time for development of therapies. Although only founded nine years ago, Recursion already has four programs in clinical trials. A key factor in this success is a bold departure from the traditional hypothesis-based approach to science driven by lab failures Chris experienced while earning his MD-PhD. Once he and his colleagues cast aside their bias about what was driving the disease in question, they achieved success in animal testing. “We just modeled the genetic loss of function because we knew that incontrovertibly to be true, and then asked the cells what was actually driving the disease and what could make it better.” Don't miss this fascinating look at reengineering drug discovery through gene mapping, training neural networks and other leading-edge technology. Chris Gibson and I discuss the concept of an integrated approach to skin health on the show today. Specifically, we talk about stem cells. There are three stem cell categories: embryonic, mesenchymal and tissue-specific stem cells which repair and renew specific tissue such as the skin. When there is a decline is the function of the epidermal stem cells, what is happening is the telomeres are shortening each time the cells divide. Eventually, this progressive shortening of the telomeres leads to their death. Thus, our skin ages as we age so the question many are asking now, can plant stem cells help to prevent this aging process in our skin?Chris can be reached via the following links:YouTube.com/ChrisGibsonLiveSkinSoFabulous.ChrisGibsonLive.com
