Devin: What do you see, JohnMatthew, as your superpower?JohnMatthew: My superpower is a committed life.“There are cities that are literally separated by a zip code; in one zip code, you may see a life expectancy of 80, 85 years of age and in another that butts right up against it, you may see a life expectancy of 65 years, 70 years of age,” explains JohnMatthew Douglas, a leading authority on social determinants of health in helping to define his discipline.Health is measured in many ways, but life expectancy is a simple, easy-to-understand barometer for the impact of social circumstances on population and individual health. Wealth, in other words, is “absolutely” and “intrinsically” linked to life expectancy, he says. One of the ways that individuals can play a role in reducing socioeconomic gaps that accelerate death and cause poor health is crowdfund investing–impact crowdfunding.“Within the United States, we have an environment within which 80 percent of business owners are white–actually, a little bit more than that,” JohnMatthew says. “Somewhere in the neighborhood of 14.5, 15% Hispanic, approximately 2.4% or so are Black-owned businesses, and then the rest are dispersed among our diverse population.”Noting that Black-owned businesses are perceived as having a higher rate of failure, he says, “This is occurring not because of a lack of will and desire and passion, great idea, great solution. But it's occurring because of a lack of access to the resources and tools and knowledge that an entrepreneur or small business would need to ensure their success.”Crowdfund investing is a tool we can all use to address this lack of funding.JohnMatthew consults with the Lonely Entrepreneur, “a SaaS platform that makes it easier for not only for Black and Brown communities of entrepreneurs but all entrepreneurs actually, to access the knowledge, tools and resources that they need to ensure their success.”By investing in diverse founders, we are directly addressing the social determinants of health in a constructive way toward closing gaps in health outcomes.JohnMatthew has developed his expertise and a successful career serving people because he has followed the counsel of Rev. Martin Luther King to have a “committed life,” making it his superpower.AI Episode Summary* Devin Thorpe interviews John Matthew Douglas, co-founder of Nello Health and I Press Forward LLC, on the Superpowers for Good show.* John Matthew Douglas is an authority on social determinants of health and explains that social determinants of health are about the environment we live in and the barriers that may hinder our health and well-being.* There is a connection between social determinants of health and life expectancy, both globally and within specific communities, with wealthier areas having longer life expectancies than impoverished ones.* Nelo Health is using technology and the metaverse to address social determinants of health and improve patient outcomes and the overall healthcare system.* Upstream interventions focus on addressing neglected social determinants such as education and economic empowerment to position individuals for a better life and reduce reliance on downstream interventions.* Crowdfunding can help address health concerns by providing funding to diverse founders who are traditionally excluded from capital markets, leading to positive impacts on health outcomes and communities.* John Matthew's superpower is living a committed life, inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s call to redefine greatness as an individual's capacity to serve others.* He shares an example of his mentorship program, I Press Forward, which successfully impacted the lives of at-risk middle school students through the collaboration of professionals, including Rear Admiral Ken Braithwaite.* The program helped improve attendance, behavior, and academic performance of the students, emphasizing the importance of passion, vision, and believing in oneself.* John Matthew can be reached on LinkedIn and through Nelo Health and I Press Forward LLC's websites. How to Develop A Committed Life As a SuperpowerMLK preached that one's goal should be to maximize service to others. He called that a “committed life.” Having given his life in pursuit of that ideal, subsequent generations–including JohnMatthew–have been influenced by his commitment to walking his preaching. In our conversation, JohnMatthew shared an anecdote to illustrate the power of leaning into a commitment to serving others. He recounts founding the mentorship program "I Press Forward" in 2012 at the behest of a public school teacher. Focused on rescuing middle school boys from troubled paths, the program was inspired by the challenges of crime, single-parent households, and poor attendance. The program's foundation rested on imparting soft skills, resilience, and leadership to students. A pivotal moment came when retired Rear Admiral Ken Braithwaite engaged with the program, sharing his experiences of meeting presidents and emphasizing that anyone, regardless of circumstances, can succeed in the United States.Over four impactful years, the program enhanced students' attendance, behavior, and academic performance, transcending the confines of their neighborhoods.By following JohnMatthew's example, you can make a committed life a strength that defines you, too. In so doing, you can make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Guest-Provided ProfileJohnMatthew Douglas (he/him):Biographical Information: John Matthew Douglas (JohnMatthew), with nearly two- and one-half decades of diverse healthcare industry experience, tireless work in social determinants of health (SDoH) offers perspective many may have not considered. She was one of the creators of the Broadway musical Soul Doctor and was inducted into the Brooklyn Hall of Fame in 2016, receiving a Certificate of Congressional Recognition for her work. In addition, Neshama has sparked public conversation about the place of women in Judaism, and the importance of religious pluralism as she collaborates with musicians of different faiths. Neshama is also the daughter of Shlomo Carlebach, a man both widely celebrated and shunned in the Jewish world. Reb Shlomo, as he was called by his followers, is considered by many to be the foremost Jewish religious songwriter of the 20th century. Through his charismatic storytelling, unconventional spiritual approach, and lively songs, he inspired thousands of Jews to desire to live a spiritual and Jewish life. But Shlomo was also accused by many people of sexual abuse, accusations that were heard and addressed mostly after his death in 1994, and many Jewish communities particularly after the #metoo movement, wrestle over whether to use the music he created at all. Neshama untangles herself from the complicated life and legacy of her father. She sits rooted in her deep values, purpose and voice, looking out with piercing honesty at the hypocrisy that surrounds her. She shares insights into a world that, in the pursuit to idolize her father, pushed her aside. She shares about both the greatness and the brokenness of Shlomo, and about the way she is using her life to love with boundaries and attention in a way he never could. And she blows me away with her daily routine, as a way to make herself and her children her top priority. Most exciting of all, Neshama shares her latest project which is to be sure to illuminate our eyes and to change countless people's lives. Neshama, thank you for being here. we are so in need of your life and spirit in this world.

Youth for Troops (Y4T) is a youth-led, service-focused, non-profit 501(c)(3), with a desire as youth to inspire this generation and all other generations to volunteer together and support our service members and veterans. It was created by co-founders Taylor Piatt, Heather Piatt, Hannah Piatt, Sophie Hoffa, Walter Hoffa, and Leo Hoffa, located in Anthem and Tramonto. Y4T became an official non-profit in April 2017, but they've been passionate about serving and volunteering since they were young. Youth for Troops hopes that this generation will develop a respect and appreciation for those that protect our liberties and freedoms through meaningful experiences and unique volunteer opportunities. Their mission is “To inspire patriotism in fellow youth and across generations by volunteering on behalf of service members and veterans through community service, advocacy, and education.” All six youth board members have had a passion for serving our military and veterans for many years. However, the majority of community service opportunities were geared towards adults, so they decided to start an organization that would allow anyone from ages 0 to 120 to volunteer with them. Youth for Troops hosts monthly activities, including a Care Packages for Deployed Troops event, held on the second Monday of every month at the Outlets at Anthem. Volunteers of all ages fill care packages with food and hygiene items that are shipped to our deployed heroes, with a total of 5,352 boxes shipped since 2018. They have raised over $80,280 to cover shipping costs  and have filled each box with in-kind donations from local schools, businesses, organizations and individual supporters. Y4T also holds a Plastic Mats for Homeless Veterans event on the third Tuesday of each month. Volunteers sort and cut plastic bags into strips, and then crochet them into decorative mats that are given to homeless veterans. It takes 700-900 recycled plastic bags and many volunteer hours to make one mat. Y4T has distributed 535 plastic mats throughout the state since this event started. Youth for Troops founders are proud members of Arizona Patriot Guard Riders, who hold flags at active military homecomings, veteran events, and military funerals. Y4T also collaborates with Arizona Honor Flight to support WWII, Korean, and Vietnam Veterans, and serve meals at reunion banquets. Y4T founders are also members of the Daisy Mountain Veterans and they participate in their annual DMV Veterans Parade. The Youth Board will gladly present to schools, clubs, corporate team building activities, and special events and provide patriotic projects. Through family-friendly community service projects and patriotic events, Y4T volunteers have accumulated over 22,800 community service hours supporting veterans and deployed heroes. Youth for Troops was honored with a flag that was flown over NATO Headquarters in Afghanistan.  It was delivered by a local hero that received their care packages while stationed in country. Y4T was recently presented with the 2020 Anthem Veterans Service Award from the Anthem Community Council and has been honored with a Congressional Recognition from Arizona's District 8 Congresswoman Debbie Lesko. Y4T was also honored to have a proclamation read into the United States House of Representatives in Washington, D.C. in 2019. Y4T was also awarded the Anthem Area Chamber of Commerce 2018 Non-Profit of the Year award, and Hulafrog Most Loved Local Charity 2019. Youth for Troops grows by word of mouth, so please spread the word about their mission. They can be found on Instagram and has a YouTube channel, as well as a website, youthfortroops.org. Youth for Troops is very passionate about honoring our service members, both past and present. They get a great deal of satisfaction knowing that they are encouraging all ages to take an active role in supporting our heroes.
