Twee jaar geleden overleed Meindert Fennema. Ter nagedachtenis organiseren we de Meindert Fennema-lezing. Deze tweede editie wordt uitgesproken door Annelien de Dijn, hoogleraar Moderne politieke geschiedenis en auteur van het boek Vrijheid: een woelige geschiedenis.Tijdens deze lezing laat zij zien hoe negentiende-eeuwse ideeën nog steeds doorwerken in onze samenleving. Ze benadrukt dat feminisme niet alleen terug moet kijken naar de geschiedenis van het patriarchaat, maar vooral vooruit moet denken. Een uitnodigend pleidooi om oude patronen los te laten en samen te bouwen aan een gelijkwaardige toekomst.Annelien de Dijn is hoogleraar Moderne politieke geschiedenis en voorzitter van de afdeling Politieke geschiedenis van de Universiteit Utrecht. Haar onderzoek richt zich op de geschiedenis van het politieke denken in Europa en in de Verenigde Staten van 1700 tot nu. promoveerde in 2005 aan de KU Leuven. Bart Geeraedts heeft met Marli Huijer en Christien Brinkgreve een gesprek over het moederschap. Steeds meer, met name hoog opgeleide vrouwen aarzelen of zij nog wel kinderen willen, het is nog steeds moeilijk om als moeder een gelijkwaardige positie te behouden in persoonlijke relaties, binnen werk, in de maatschappij en in het publieke leven. Maar een moeder die gemengde gevoelens heeft over het moederschap past niet in het maatschappelijke ideaal van perfect moederschap en roept daarom angst op bij radicaal rechtse partijen en orthodox gelovige groeperingen. Met hun familiepolitiek en anti-abortusstandpunten hopen zij de verworven reproductieve vrijheden van vrouwen terug te draaien, en daarmee de vrijheid om zelf over hun leven te beschikken.  Marli Huijer en Christien Brinkgreve geven van 28 oktober t/m 1 november de cursusweek Moederschap revisited

Hunter Wadlington is the Director of Programs at the Mission Community Resource Center in Owasso. She is so vital to helping those in need with resources and has added so much to the program. Her road to getting there is part of what we talk about. Sometimes our roads are not linear and we don't know where they will end up. Hunter and her husband, Christien, have been married for a little over two years. They met in their freshman year of high school and stayed best friends for ten years before realizing they were meant for each other! They are an amazing couple who help serve their community in Tulsa, OK. Hunter is originally from Virginia and her story of getting to Oklahoma is interesting with lots of turns. Christien Meinderstma is a Dutch designer who has a fascination with materials. She currently has an installation at the V&A, entitled Re-forming Waste, which shows new work based around her interest in linoleum, as well as technological advances with the material she has described as her first love, wool. Christien came to wider attention initially when she graduated from the Design Academy Eindhoven in 2003, with a book that catalogued a week's worth of objects confiscated at security checkpoints in Schipol Airport. She followed that up a few years later, with PIG 05049, an extraordinary tome which looked at all the products made using a single pig. Her work is the collections of MoMA, the V&A, and the Vitra Design Museum. Over the years, she has won numerous Dutch Design Awards, as well as creating the award for the prestigious Earthshot Prize.In this episode we talk about: working alone; experimenting with linoleum; her family's history with wool; the importance of provenance; defining failure and success; not being interested in selling things or mass production; working with the city of Rotterdam to find ways to deal with its wool; collaborating with a ‘wobot'; designing like a journalist, the energy of Design Academy Eindhoven; and the unexpected uses of a  pig…We are delighted this episode has been sponsored by the Surface Design Show. “Your next position is your best position”. Variety is the spice of life when it comes to the ideal posture and exercise, according to Christien Bird, Women's Health Physiotherapist. Regular exercise is crucial for women in midlife, not just to support bone density, but also to reduce the risk of heart attacks, which increases as oestrogen levels drop, post-menopause. Exercise is also a great stress-buster, and relieving those cortisol levels can make a big difference to your wellbeing during the menopause.In this episode of The Happy Menopause, I speak to Christien about how, when and how much to exercise to optimise our bone, heart and hormone health. As a Women's Health Physio and founder of the excellent White Hart Clinic in Barnes, South West London, she's ideally placed to bust all those myths about what menopausal women ‘should' or ‘shouldn't' be doing on the exercise front. She's a specialist in pelvic floor and incontinence and a passionate supporter of women's health in midlife.We talk bone health, nutrition and the different ways that exercise can keep you strong, healthy and mobile through the menopause and beyond. Christien shares the shocking statistic that from the age of 5, girls are already less active than boys – less likely to cycle, join a sports club or walk to school -  and this gap widens as children grow. She's full of good advice about the different types of exercise you can try, how much you need to do and how to make sure you don't get in a rut.
