Thought leaders often find themselves entangled in the webs of negativity, especially in our digitally interconnected age. In a conversation that's as illuminating as it is uplifting, Anthony Iannarino, author of "The Negativity Fast," joins Phil Gerbyshak to dissect the essence of negativity and offer potent solutions for personal growth. This podcast is a respite for anyone—speakers, trainers, coaches, consultants, facilitators, and authors—who is feeling stressed or overwhelmed by the surging tide of negativity.Key Takeaways:1. The Power of a 'Negativity Fast':Anthony Iannarino kicked off the conversation by stressing the importance of a "negativity fast." This essentially means stepping away from negative stimuli like news and politics to focus on personal growth. This was inspired by one of his less-than-pleasant life experiences—putting stucco on houses, which turned out to be one of the worst pieces of advice he'd ever received. Despite such challenges, he decided to use his trials as a platform to build positivity.2. Empathy as an Antidote to Negative Emotions:Reflecting on his background and development in comedy, Iannarino advocates the transformative power of empathy. By using his life experiences, he helps others navigate their challenges. The key takeaway here is that empathy is not just an emotional balm but a critical tool for thought leaders to connect with and guide others.3. Letting Go of the Need for External Validation:In a profound exchange with Phil, Iannarino discusses the reality that most people are not as concerned with us as we might think. This realization can be incredibly liberating, allowing us to focus more on our own growth and less on what others might think. He also stressed the importance of daily writing to maintain authenticity and to crystallize one's own thoughts and beliefs.4. Gratitude as a Lifestyle:Both speakers delved into the science-backed benefits of gratitude, which include lowered blood pressure and increased cognitive functioning. Iannarino also noted the mental wellness benefits of limiting social media exposure, which can be a significant source of negativity and stress. They advocate for teaching social media literacy to middle schoolers and stress the importance of face-to-face human interactions.5. Solving Instead of Complaining:The final leg of the podcast was a hard-hitting discussion on the dangers of complaining. From damaging personal relationships to promoting a negative mindset, complaining does more harm than good. Instead, Iannarino promotes a "solution-oriented" approach. This change in mindset not only eliminates negativity but also propels us towards creative problem-solving.Next steps and conclusion:In a world that is often overrun with negativity, the podcast offers a beacon of positivity and actionable advice. Whether it is the power of taking a "negativity fast," the freedom that comes from releasing the need for external validation, or the simple yet profound impact of saying "thank you," this podcast is a must-listen for any thought leader looking to make an impact in a meaningful way.So, if you're looking to reshape your perspective and reignite your passion, it might be time to hit that pre-order button for Anthony Iannarino's upcoming book, "The Negativity Fast" at The Sales Blog. Because let's face it, the world could use a bit more positivity, and so could you.  ★ Support this podcast ★ This is a public episode. Elite Sales Strategies: A Guide to Being One-Up, Creating Value, and Becoming Truly Consultative by Anthony Iannarino About the Book: Accelerate your sales career with this how-to book from an expert in sales In Elite Sales Strategies, expert sales leader Anthony Iannarino offers his philosophy about becoming a commercial success. This guidebook provides unique insights into how to approach every sale by serving your clients from a position of authority and expertise. As Iannarino himself notes, this technique speaks to an ethical obligation towards your client, combining ethics and tactics to help place you in a position where your strengths can be fully utilized. This guidebook suggests putting yourself in a “one-up” position, where you, as the salesperson, come to a client in a position of authority and strength, where you yourself are qualified to offer nuanced and helpful advice to companies that have put themselves in a “one-down” position, whether that be by bad decision-making, poor understanding of the marketplace, or bad luck. At its heart, this book suggests you find the advantages that you can provide that will, in turn, help your client become “one-up” themselves in their own field and ensure they achieve the better results they need. In addition, Elite Sales Strategies provides readers with: A step-by-step approach for how to become “one-up” yourself and what you provide to your clients A healthy analysis of what makes a person or a company “one-down” and tips on how to course correct Strategies, tactics, and talk tracks that will provide you with what you need to become “one-up” Terminology and vocabulary so that you can approach your client with tact and decorum while still addressing the weaknesses of their system As a successful international speaker, author, and sales leader, Anthony Iannarino brings a unique set of skills to bear in this book. Iannarino's tried-and-true methodology is an ideal resource for sales professionals in all fields, as well as for executives and managers looking to improve their sales success and position within the business world. About the Author: Anthony Iannarino is a writer, a best-selling author, a speaker, a sales leader, and an entrepreneur. His primary focus is human effectiveness in sales, management, leadership, and personal and professional transformation. Anthony publishes a daily post on his blog, a practice he has kept since the end of 2009. And, interesting facts – he has a law degree and at one time was the lead singer for a hair metal band in LA! Anthony Iannarino, author of Eat Their Lunch: Winning Customers Away From Your Competitors, wrote the book to teach others how to create greater value, become more strategic, and how to make people think better, and make better decisions about running their business. Iannarino felt that, while there are plenty of books about sales, no one had taken the time to list the steps on how to gain customers by taking them away from your competition. He says that while it seems cutthroat, it's actually not. Instead, he sees it more as a takeaway because you still have to win their hearts and minds. Iannarino says that the first step in playing the game is having mindshare, someone to engage and share new ideas with, and someone to show others where the gaps are. Make it worth their time because “time is the single-most finite non-renewable resource any of us have.” Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Anthony Iannarino, author, speaker, and well-known sales leader discusses his contrary opinion of the buying process in B2B. He says prospects don’t already know about the product and salespeople aren’t unnecessary as some will have us believe. In this interview with the host Paul Petersen he covers: ----more---- The most important, six-word question a salesperson can ask. It is misleading to think the prospect knows everything.  Of the four values a salesperson gives the prospects, only one is a real value add to the prospect. Inexperienced sales qualifiers subtract value in the buyer's mind rather than give value. Why the first contract with a prospect has have value in creating a compelling partnership Why literature is useless Anthony also discusses his book “Eat Their Lunch.”   The first-ever playbook for B2B salespeople on how to win clients and customers who are already being serviced by your competition, from the author of The Only Sales Guide You'll Ever Need and The Lost Art of Closing.  About Anthony Iannarino ANTHONY IANNARINO is a highly respected international speaker, bestselling author, entrepreneur, and sales leader specializing in complex business-to-business (B2B) sales. This book is about winning competitive business in a me too market and Iannarino refers to the 'red ocean' - when you're competing against someone whose product is similar to your own and where it's a zero some game i.e. they lose, you win. Chapter 7: 'Building Consensus Horizontally and Vertically'. This chapter talks about a sales pitch where you've got different decision makers involved in the process to get your product/solution signed off and the interrelationship between those people. Chapter 8: 'Finding a Path to a Deal' More often than not, most deals follow a path. Maybe not a grooved path that others have walked on, but they still follow a path. Chapter 9: 'Creating a Preference' This opens part 3 of the book and is one of my favourite bits of the book. His opening line in each chapter is excellent and this one is no exception: 'We often forget that the act of selling is about creating a preference to work with us instead of our competitor' well said. I think a lot of people we interview forget that - you're in the business of persuade the customer to do something that they might not have done without you.

We're on a. brand new book this week which is Anthony Iannarino's 'Eat Their Lunch: winning customers away from your competition' author of 'The Only Sales Guide You Will Ever Need'. You can tell from reading the book that Iannarino is a good salesman. We've read the first 3 chapters and so far, it is a really great book and we've enjoyed it. It's really well suited to people who sell to a Me Too market - and whether or not people admit it, a lot of the IT industry is a Me Too market. This book is not only for the new business salesperson, but for account managers looking to win wallet share across an acocunt in competitive environments. What's interesting about the book so far, is that it's different to a lot of the other sales books we've read. What a lot of the other sales books will talk about is understanding a prospect's need and then differentiating yourself from your competitor by linking them back to the product that you sell. Which this doesn't do and a different viewpoint and insight is good. Introduction: Anthony makes a point that you don't have to kill your competition to beat them. You don't win by focusing on your competition, you win by focusing on yourself and the end user prospect. He also talks about how there is no deal worth your integrity or your character - which we are in full agreement with! Add more value to the end user and you'll win. Anthony talks about how you can't create doubt about your competitors - it makes client resistant. The problem with rubbishing your competitor is that you're also telling your prospector that they're an idiot. Chapter 1: You Are The Value Proposition Anthony uses the word 'displacement' - you have to look at accounts and think actually, why is there an opportunity for displacement? Anthony lists reasons why an account you're dealing with might not be complacent. He also makes the point of if you're waiting around for the moment when change takes place, you won't win. What you have to do is compel a client to make a change. And he explains this using levels, which are really useful. Anthony makes a beautiful point which we love which is 'However, it is even more important to know that a great salesperson with an acceptable product beats a poor salesperson with an excellent product'. As a law of average, this is very true. The exercise at the end of the chapter is brilliant and it is in our diaries to carry out this exercise. Chapter 2: Capturing Mindshare This is an extension to the first chapter and Anthony questions why people go through the trouble of getting through a client's door and then don't take the time to get all the money out of them that they can. This is the predilection of new business hunters, to win and move on. Anthony absolutely nailed his comments on the trusted advisor. He's referring to how you need to be perceived as the person who knows more about the service that you offer than they do. He gives an example that couldn't be more apt for our industry and that is super trends. He talks about the importance of looking at the bigger picture and using the super trend to drive the sale and he's 100% right. Once again, there's an exercise at the end of this chapter that we've put time in our diary to do. We would very highly recommend this book. Chapter 3: Creating An Opening Through Nurture Campaigns The process in this chapter was beautiful, a process that most of us know but rarely carry out. If you're writing your 2019 business plan, we would buy this book just for this chapter! This chapter is about making a statement to your client that you're starting this game in a different way to everyone else. There's also a workflow for canvassing clients in different kinds of mediums. This book is a me vs. the wo

The phrase “moral management” may not be one you’ve heard much in the context of your business or sales career, but it’s a concept that leadership legend Tom Peters is emphasizing more often these days. He’s come to believe that one of the best opportunities for change in the world rests on the shoulders of middle managers, those who daily influence the effectiveness and development of the common people of our day. In this conversation with Anthony the conversation ranges from rock-n-roll, to a visit from a home service technician, to the boardroom - and in all of it you’ll hear Tom’s passion for encouraging managers and CEOs alike to foster a healthy culture that builds people. Don't miss it. This conversation could be the highlight of your week. On this episode, discover why @Tom_ Peters believes that moral #management can - and should - change The world. #InTheArena with @Iannarino #TheExcellenceDividend #sales #leadershipClick To Tweet Societal and technological changes require that we rethink who we are and what we do with and for each other There is a lot of concern these days that the advent and growth of AI, robots, and machine learning will result in the loss of many jobs in coming years. Tom Peters believes that the concerns are valid, but he doesn’t believe it’s going to be an apocalypse if we can make the adjustments now that will enable us to pivot as a society. In this conversation, you’ll hear what Tom believes needs to happen in our thinking to enable us to not only survive but thrive in the new world that’s coming. You'll also learn why business owners and service providers today need to continue working hard at what they do even though robots may be coming to take their jobs. It’s a fascinating and valuable conversation you won’t want to miss. Every business has a moral responsibility to develop the people who work for them ~ Tom Peters When you consider that the average middle-level manager in any business has at least a handful of people who are direct reports, and you open your eyes to the fact that the manager in question is one of the primary leaders and influencers in the lives of those they lead, you see the foundation for the point Tom Peters makes on this episode: Every business has a moral responsibility to develop the people who work for them. Find out why Tom is so passionate about this point and hear how he’s come to his conclusions. But even more vital for where you are at now, learn how his new book, “The Excellence Dividend” can serve as a checklist for making your company - and your role in it - more and more of a change maker in the lives of your employees. Every #business has a moral responsibility to develop the people who work for them ~ @Tom_Peters. Hear Tom make the case on this episode of #InTheArena with @Iannarino. #sales #leadership #TheExcellenceDividendClick To Tweet There is no excuse for not making any organization of any size, a great place to work ~ Tom Peters It’s easy to think of the Mom and Pop service businesses in small town USA as insignificant or second-rate, but Tom Peters believes that those local, customer-facing businesses that provide opportunity and income for average Americans are some of the best places for the work of excellence to take place in ways that truly impact the lives of those they employ and serve. Tom’s expertise and experience are unquestioned and his ongoing emphasis on the impact excellence makes in the lives of employees and customers is one that needs to be heard over and over. This episode sounds the charge again and is one that will inspire you to evaluate what you’re doing in the role you occupy at your company so that you can up your game and make an even greater impact The pinnacle of achievement has nothing to do with CEOs Tom Peters once read a post on social media that said something to the effect that Elon Musk is the greatest thing that has happened to the world in recent years.

Dan Pink is not a guy who normally would come to mind when you begin thinking about a person who can teach you productivity improvement techniques. But given that Dan is committed to a research-based approach to his writing, it shouldn’t surprise you that he's discovered something that can improve your productivity either. His new book, “When” is a masterpiece for those looking to improve their productivity - but you won’t know it when you first pick up the book. This conversation digs into what Dan discovered through his research about how humans work, how our biological cycles and clocks inform the decisions we should make about the work we do and provides practical things you can do to increase your chances of getting more important stuff done. Dan’s discoveries are revolutionary, so don’t miss it. .@DanielPink: #Productivity Improvement Techniques, #Chronotypes, and Napucinnos, on episode 109 of #InTheArena with @Iannarino. #SalesClick To Tweet Are the “morning person” and “night owl” stereotypes based in reality? For a very long time, we’ve heard people referred to as “morning person” or “night owl.” It’s an example of a trite saying that IS a trite saying because there is truth to it. Dan Pink's research has revealed that there really are rhythms to life and patterns to the way individuals operate that make them more prone to be productive at different times of the day. Why does that matter for productivity? It's because knowing which type of person you are will enable you to strategically plan certain types of work for specific times of the day. The result is that you’ll be operating at peak capacity when you are working. These ideas make a lot more sense in the context of the conversation Anthony had with Dan, so set aside time to listen to this intriguing conversation. Peak, trough, and recovery: 3 stages of daily activity you need to understand One of the most important things Dan Pink has discovered while researching for his new book, “When” is that every human being operates in cycles. We all experience the following three periods in every day - peaks, troughs, and recovery periods. When you are able to identify exactly WHEN each of those periods happens in your typical day, you’re able to do the right kind of work during the right time frame and your productivity soars as a result. This is more than a productivity improvement technique, it’s a day planning strategy that can yield results beyond what you might imagine. Listen in to the conversation and you’ll hear it straight from the horse’s mouth. New York Times Best-Selling Author, Dan Pink is Anthony’s guest on this episode of In The Arena. Peak, trough, and recovery: 3 stages of daily #activity you need to understand. @DanielPink explains why on this episode of #InTheArena with @Iannarino. #sales #productivityClick To Tweet Why you should never evaluate your decisions based on the outcome Outcome-based evaluations are never a good idea, even though it’s the kind of reasoning most of us fall into. You can’t tell if an idea was good or bad simply because of the outcome because there are too many variables that could have or didn’t happen to be entirely sure of the result. Dan cites the decision to run every red light on the way to work as an example. Just because you get to work safely and without being pulled over by the police doesn’t mean it was a good idea. Listen to find out how Dan applies this concept to decision making, sales strategy, and day-planning and productivity. Are you limiting your productivity by trying to be too productive? Most of us who are worker-bees or "doers" spend our day in non-stop productivity mode. But research reveals that non-stop production actually becomes counterproductive. In this conversation, Dan Pink highlights how breaks throughout the day, and even what he calls a “Napucinno” (you’ll have to listen to find out what that is) can actually increase your productivity and enable you to get more done in le...

Anthony Iannarino  -  Becoming The Trusted Advisor  What Is Not Advice  Your product is not advice. Nor is your service. Nor are the solutions that you happen to sell. The features, benefits, and advantages of what you sell are not advice either.  Your management team isn’t advice, and as impressive as your board members may be, they aren’t advice. You know what else isn’t advice? All of your locations, and all of the logos of the big, recognizable, widely-admired companies you serve. As remarkable as your clients are, they are not advice. Your differentiation strategy isn’t advice either. The things that make you different and make a difference for your clients may help you distinguish yourself in a crowded market, but they are not advice.  If you are spending the precious little time you have with your dream clients talking about you, your product, your company, your clients, and what makes you different, you are not “advising.”  What Is Advice  What are all the forces weighing down on your dream client and causing them to produce results that are less than they should be? How should they be thinking about these forces, and what should they do about them?  What are the risks of not responding to the systemic challenges that threaten your dream client’s business? What are their choices? What are the trade-offs? What are the risks of taking action now?  What opportunities are available to your dream client now? Which provide them with the greatest advantages and which hAve the fastest return on invested time, money, and resources?  How you engage with your dream client matters.  Where you start the conversation is important because you are defining your relationship. If you begin the conversation with the things that you are comfortable talking about but that don’t create value, then you are not establishing that you have the potential to be their consigliere.  If on the other hand, you start the conversation with strategically important issues, you demonstrate that you know something worth knowing, something that can benefit your dream client.  Business acumen is the new sales acumen. What is at risk by starting the conversation too low is nothing less than your relevance. To learn more about Anthony and his work please visit:  www.thesalesblog.com/newsletter

Seeing the Lean Our guest on today’s Popping the Bubbl is Elissa Shevinsky. Elissa from the jump, has been creating, founding, leading, and influencing people in the tech world. She’s the author of “Lean Out,” a collection of essays that chronicle the experiences of women, LGBTQ folks, and people of color in the start-up world. In contrast to Sheryl Sandberg's widely read Lean In, Elissa’s main message is not that women (and other groups) need to change their behavior, but rather it is the companies themselves that must change and reach these groups that are leaning out because of marginalization. FastCompany article, “As former Google employee Jamesha Fisher told Fast Company, when she landed in the Bay Area, she became aware of a systematic stigmatism for being both black and female, which made her feel like "the odd egg." She had to work to develop a support circle of peers and mentors, in part through social media, so she could feel more a part of a community.” “Brogrammer” culture. In the micro, Elissa’s evocative personal vignettes about her own experiences are shocking. The disregard for her talents, the targeted bullying, these barriers that exist belie our expectations of companies like Google, Twitter and Facebook. From my view on the edges of the industry (I live in the SF Bay and have consulted with dozens of local tech based clients) my impression was that start-ups and tech giants were leading the way, with some exceptions, in terms of including diversity groups—I was wrong. One of the baseline tools I bring clients is to re-orient with other perspectives in mind. If the perspective of your target/partner/customer would improve how you approach your objective, it’s critical to obtain and accept their perception to open collaboration. Recognizing another’s perception isn’t agreeing with it. I don’t agree with a lot of things I experience, but I do accept that someone else’s reality was formed in a different environment; and that matters in ways that create wonderful opportunities.   In a recent interview with Rob Bell we discussed “the furniture of the mind.” If we run through someone’s “mind room,” blindfolded and unaware of their furniture, we disrupt or ignore their world. Leaving them to wonder what they are supposed to do to prevent our chaotic influence...then, they put their room back just as it was, and then begin to lean outside the organization. Our institutional and personal cultural perceptions tend to revert back to a comfortable setting similar to a compass—in the case of the Silicon Valley, the archetype of Brogrammer with Mark Zuckerberg as its poster boy or “white male nerd” is celebrated and actively sought out by Angels and VC’s. The trick is realizing you are stuck on magnetic north when you intend to work off of true north. The hard work comes in actually improving the culture of an organization. That improvement requires discomfort, mistakes, patience and a guide. Illustrating this, Elissa’s stories exposed my own dis-perception of diversity. I realized my experience was shallow and white male (hi, I’m a white dude) based…and dismissive of other experiences; and I know better. She talked to us about Squinky. I had no idea who or what a Squinky was, I immediately judged simply based on the name. That position, is completely wrong, dismissive and unfair to Squinky. Elissa afforded me the chance to see the “lean” and evolve. I’m thankful to Elissa for coming on Popping the Bubbl, and for her wonderful book. Notes: Elissa is a passionate advocate and recruiter at Kearney, Boyle and Associates delivering underrepresented candidates to companies looking bring diversity to their workforces.  Elissa is available and excited to give talks on her book, if you are interested in booking her, please reach out to her agent Melissa Broadway. In this episode I mention Anthony Iannarino, who writes “The Sales Blog.”
