Light The Night brings communities together to celebrate those who are fighting the disease and to honor those we have lost. Each year friends, families and co-workers form teams to raise money in support of our mission. Ria Freydberg – The Truman Charities Podcast: A Community of Caring with Jamie Truman Episode 28 Ria Freydberg Ria Freydberg serves as the Executive Director for the Mid-Atlantic Region of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. After more than a decade in restaurant management, Ria was nominated to run for LLS' Man & Woman of the Year campaign in memory of her mother. Ria lost her mother to acute myeloid leukemia and after participating in the campaign, new she had found a new love and passion for non-profits, specifically LLS. Shortly after, her mentors, Allison Gurnitz (then LLS Board Chair) and then Executive Director, Beth Gorman, recruited her to work for the National Capital Area Chapter. Fast forward ten years and Ria now oversees the Washington Metro Area and state of Maryland (aka the Mid-Atlantic) for LLS. She works tirelessly toward a world without cancer and, as the top producing region in the country, has an amazing team of volunteers and staff alongside her. The Prescott Fire Department is joining a national tribute to “Light the Night for Fallen Firefighters”. Every October, the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation sponsors the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend, the official national tribute to those firefighters who died in the line of duty during the previous year. In 2017, the Foundation created Light the Night for Fallen Firefighters to recognize the 25th anniversary of the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation and the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend. Since then, Light the Night for Fallen Firefighters has expanded to include fire departments and families lighting their homes in red. The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's Light The Night is back in person this year!  Anne Bradley of LLS joins us today to talk about the many ways to get involved.  The event will be September 30th in Hart Plaza (with a virtual component for those who are more comfortable).  Anne walks us through the return of this amazing event.All of us know someone touched by cancer.  Thanks to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society's work, blood cancer survival rates have gone from 3% in the 1960's to between 80 and 90 percent today.
