Welcome to this first episode of Season Seven of the Mother's Quest Podcast! Today's episode was sparked by an experience I had on my most recent big milestone birthday. The morning of December 1st, I turned 50 and the podcast, which was a 45th birthday present to myself, turned 5. As I often do, I began my morning practice reading a book on my bedside table; the one I grabbed this time was a new one I had purchased called Wonder Seeker. Inspired by an idea within the gorgeously photographed pages, I hopped out of bed, wandered over to my bookshelf, pulled books from the shelves that were speaking to me on this occasion, and before I knew it had organized them into a pile which that became my "Manifesto for Becoming 50." There was such spontaneity, joy, and ease in this creative endeavor...qualities that emanate from the book Wonder Seeker and qualities I had long admired in Wonder Seeker's author Andrea Scher. So, when it came time to launch the new season and invite a guest to anchor our month-long Mother's Quest May invitation to reclaim our E.P.I.C. lives in the Mother's Quest Community, I knew just who to ask. What a delight it was when Andrea Scher said yes! Andrea is an author, artist, and life coach whose work is driven by her belief in the transformative power of creativity for joy and wellbeing. For nearly two decades, through her award-winning blog Superhero Journal, her Creative Superheroes podcast, and her bestselling e-courses, Andrea has thrilled others with their own power to find the magic all around them. Her new book, Wonder Seeker: 52 Ways to Wake up Your Creativity and Find Your Joy straddles the world of creativity and mindfulness - playfully inspiring readers to live more vibrant lives full of presence, joy, and connection. Like the book, I felt like this whole conversation straddled the world of creativity and mindfulness. Andrea shares with us where she developed her unique lens of looking at things through "wonder goggles" as she calls them, about the big dreams she calls Mondo Beyondo, how she loved herself and her children through her divorce, and where she's finding joy today. Talking with Andrea reminded me that our creative endeavors have ripple effects we may not even know and that we don't need permission to pursue the things that we love. I hope you love this conversation as much as I did and open yourself to seeking more wonder in your life. I also invite you to join me and Andrea in saying "yes" to our own Mondo Beyondo dreams, to our own creativity, and to creating our own Manifestos, by signing up for the Manifesto Challenge, linked in the show notes, tapping into some of the creative ideas for expression from Wonder Seeker, like the book spine poetry I drew inspiration from, and then joining Andrea and me on May 24th to celebrate what we're creating and manifesting together. Welcome back to the Mother's Quest Podcast. I know it's been a while– a long while. When my father, David Lieberman, died in December, I put the podcast on pause. And in many ways, it felt like I also put parts of my life on pause. But after months of navigating waves of grief, I'm finding my way back into my life and back to my voice. Through laughter and tears, I recorded a special solocast to officially close out Season Six of the Mother's Quest Podcast so I can begin again. It felt like part of my healing to share my stories with you and I'm hopeful that there may be something in these reflections that can be meaningful and healing for you too. Death is one of the few things we can all count on in our lives. And yet it's one of the things we are most reluctant to talk about. I hope this exploration of my experience during my father's death, and the lessons I learned, might support you to open yourself to conversations about death. In so doing, you'll open yourself more fully to life and love. "There is nothing so whole as a broken heart" – a quote I cut out in a magazine while working on my vision board the other day. It resonated immediately. There were so many people, only a few of you who I mention by name in this episode (but you know who you are!) whose wisdom, compassion and caring made moving through this painful process not only bearable but at times beautiful. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. You helped me and my family stay whole and I am so grateful. Lessons To Guide You Through the Death of a Loved One In this episode, I walk you through the eight lessons I learned through my father's death, my grief, and most importantly– my love for my Dad and my family. 1) Look for the Signs 2) Find Your Guides 3) Closure Can be Healing 4) Lean Into Your Rituals. Make Them Your Own. 5) Let Laughter In and Invite the Possibility that the Unexpected Can be a Gift 6) Release Perfectionism and Shame 7) Open Your Heart and Ride the Waves 8) Have the Conversations This Episode's Challenge: While it's not easy to talk about, having conversations about death is one of the best ways to prepare ourselves and those around us for when the time comes– because we'll never know when it might happen. So say "yes" to conversations about death and dying. Use the resources at Death over Dinner to gather with friends and family for these conversations. Also have meaningful conversations, and consider recording them, like I did with my father, with the important people in your lives. Finally, enjoy the journey, cherish the dash between the years from when you were born and when you will die and continually ask yourself the question "What is it you want to do with your one wild and precious life?" I do want to share a link to an episode I recorded with Trayvon Martin's mother, Sybrina Fulton, who tragically lost her son in senseless gun violence. Your gut feeling, your intuition, your inner knowing, that thing you just know but can't say why or show the proof – that's what we're talking about today. Modern mystic, business strategist, psychic channel, new paradigm entrepreneur and energy and light worker, Lindsay Pera joins us to talk about the new landscape of business, leadership and human existence altogether as we navigate the civilization shifting moments that are colliding together all at once right now. Lindsay shines a light on the importance of understanding that we are navigating a crisis in our relationships, our health and in our financial wellbeing, from an individual level to a collective level and beyond. Our climate is in crisis, our ways of governing and leading are being tested all around the globe, our ability to feel safe around one another and the air that we are surrounded by has taken a toll on our relationships to others and to ourselves. Lindsay shares her experience of using the wisdom from years of managing chronic illness to heal through the uncertainty of the coronavirus and COVID-19, she talks about the shift in ideology and the vulnerability of misinformation in the wellness industry and the importance of curiosity, grace and discernment as we step into the new frontier of forming the building blocks for our civilization in the years to come. Get your pen and paper ready for this episode, Lindsay offers frameworks and blueprints to sort through the chaos of the current moment to find resonance with your inner wisdom and unique contributions in this life. If you are looking for an episode to productively think about how you are going to show up in the “after times” this is it!
I'm honored to share this special episode with a woman who has been an incredible source of wisdom, support, and guidance in my life, a mentor and teacher who has helped me claim the “mystic” in me, Lindsay Pera. Lindsay and I connected in a magical way at a group dinner in San Francisco about four years ago. Though she was seated at the other end of a long table, she came up to me before the evening ended to say “I have this feeling I'm supposed to talk with you!” We had a delightful conversation and parted ways. But several months later, when my youngest son Jacob received a Lyme disease diagnosis, I searched in one of my Facebook groups for someone who had experience with the disease, and Lindsay's name popped up again and again. I reached out to her for guidance and after an almost two-hour phone conversation, I learned about how she discovered she had chronic Lyme disease and had passed it along in utero to two of her children. I hung up with tremendous admiration for her motherhood journey, a plan of action to navigate Jacob's care, and also knowing that Lindsay would become a trusted resource in my life. Blending strategy honed from her career as an analyst at Accenture with her intuition as the founder of a new paradigm business called the Modern Mystics Institute, Lindsay is a source of inspiration and guidance for so many others like me. We all benefit from transformational courses she has created like the Journey to Right Livelihood which you'll hear more about, her books the Mystics Path and the Mystics Almanac, the Mystics Oracle Deck she created with her partner Sarah Love and her membership community, the Mystics Society. The idea that we can care for ourselves and the children in our lives, even through significant health and developmental challenges, and do work we love, blending all the parts of who we are, stepping into our leadership and legacy, and finding magic and gratitude along the way, is something Lindsay demonstrates herself. And she illuminates it all for us in this conversation. From her decision to move her family to a multigenerational homestead and creating the Modern Mystics Institute, to how she's navigated having chronic Lyme and now long-haul COVID, this discussion is a beautiful weaving of all the ways Lindsay slows down in her life to manifest and notice what she's grateful for, even when things are difficult. Her gratitude practice, which she started in a “spark moment” when she found beauty in the sunset during one of her darkest days, begins its 11th year of 365 days just as this episode is being shared.I was so grateful for this time with Lindsay. I hope you'll find time to slow down and listen to this beautiful conversation, so you can find strands of what Lindsay shares that are meant for you, and that help you weave some new magic and meaning in your E.P.I.C. life. I'm Selina Davis, and I am honored to dedicate this episode of the Mother's Quest podcast to Lindsay Pera, my friendtor. What's a friendtor? Well, that is a friend and mentor all wrapped up in one. Over the years, Lindsay has helped me learn how to gather all the things I know to create the right livelihood. Lindsay even introduced me to Julie as a Mystic, because of our similar path in disability and special needs parenting. I am a person of a multifaceted lifestyle, so I've learned to create a business with blogging and podcasting, all while creating a special education advocacy practice, life coaching, and management consulting, with an emerging community called Spectrum Mother. Without the help of Julie and Lindsay, I never would have realized how to gather and align my life and my work with being a mother to a special needs child who is severely neurodivergent. Thanks to them, I am reminded to always live an EPIC life and claim my right to livelihood. A moment of total defeat that transformed into a moment of gratitude and a daily gratitude practice that Lindsay has maintained for over a decade. “I’ve got my eye on the future. The future that keeps me going forward is one that is built in a more loving way. A more compassionate world is the one that I keep in my mind’s eye as my guidepost and my true north.” – Sarah Love Politics and spirituality have a long-standing dysfunctional relationship. In this conversation with artist and writer Sarah Love and Lindsay Pera, founder of the Modern Mystic Institute, we begin to dig for the roots of this dysfunction. We already know the damage: On the right, spirituality has been manipulated and melded with politics and patriotism to oppress people and rigidly control the narrative about values in our country. The consequences are disempowering. On one hand, we’ve got the “love and light” spiritual practitioners who resist analysis and truth-telling about political and social realities. On the other hand, we have political activists who have rejected spirituality because it’s been used to bypass the harsh realities of white supremacy, cis-hetero patriarchy, and capitalism. It’s time to rewrite the narrative and to push back on constructs that narrowly define what it means to love and what it means to be a peacemaker. What if we refuse to be divided by the pundits and politicians who insist that protest, patriotism and action have to look just so? That our protestations must be polite and palatable? What if we get super clear amidst the gaslighting about what loving our country looks like? If we are going to change the trajectory of our country, we’ve got to move forward as whole people, not as people who are compartmentalized, divided and constricted. It’s time to unapologetically reclaim, redefine and sharpen our tools. We can unapologetically infuse love and spirituality with politics and politics with spirituality. The Way Station, with Lindsay, Sarah and I as your guides, will take you deeper into this re-tooling and revision of our narrative. The Way Station is a place for those working to dismantle systems of oppression can gather, refuel, get tools and get grounded in strategy. Participants will be bringing our political expertise as well as our embodied wisdom and intuitive tools. We will explore the ways in which we can stay active, involved, creative and aligned in this moment of flux and crisis. Expect rigor and magic, love and analysis. No matter the outcome on November 3rd, our work is not over. We are in it for the long haul of liberation. Please join us. Sarah, Lindsay and I talked about: The ways in which we’ve been socialized to avoid discussing politics and systems of oppression; Why politically progressive people shy away from spirituality; How spirituality and politics, when used together, have historically been weaponized to oppress people; The importance of questioning, pushing back, redefining and expanding our understanding of engaging politically with the tools of faith, peacemaking and love; Our “pivot points”: those moments in our lives where we saw more clearly our role as activists and how we could wield spirituality as a powerful force for change; Our upcoming retreat, Way Station, on October 30th, which is an opportunity to come together to refuel, get tools, and ground strategies for the work ahead; Linday’s and Sarah’s divination on the energies of 2021. About Sarah and Lindsay: Sarah Love McCoy is an artist, writer and teacher working on expanding and awakening the power of love in herself and human hearts the world over. Creator of the “I Stand for Love” Calendar (in its 17th year in print!), Sarah’s best known for her daily nuggets of inspiration. The belief that healing our inner wounds, learning to trust our hearts, moving energy through our hands (while getting out of our heads) and coming together in a community as a path towards a more loving tomorrow is the philosophy behind Sarah’s mission and purpose. Lindsay Pera is the CEO of the Modern Mystics Institute and founder of the Mystics Society. As a Mystic mama, tech entrepreneur and intuitive strategist, she’s a sought after contributor and motivator on the topics of health, wealth and transformation. When she is not extolling the virtues of “Sacred Commerce” or “Resonance” based business, you can find her knocking almonds and generally getting her gratitude on. Lindsay's new paradigm business community, The Mystic’s Society, is a safe haven for entrepreneurs weaving magic into their *work* in the world. If you’re anything like the vast majority of the mothers I’ve been talking with, you’ve been feeling disoriented and like you’ve lost yourself during these last few months. You may be wondering how am I ever going to come back home to myself? I had been feeling this way too...overwhelmed with fear, moving through all the stages of grief, and juggling demands at home that now included supporting my children’s distance learning... on top of all the other things! In this special Mother’s Day episode, I share how the E.P.I.C. Life framework itself, words of wisdom from past guests on the podcast, and a question my teenage son Ryan asked me, started to help me reclaim myself. Listen in for special clips lighting my way from episodes I’ll be re-releasing this week as part of a special series to light the way in the midst of challenge: Planting Seeds for Mother’s Quest – My Introductory Episode “E” engaging mindfully with our children - “Flawed” with Truth Bomb Mom Kristina Kuzmic “P” passionate and purposeful impact beyond our family - From Grief to Advocacy and a Circle of Mothers with Trayvon Martin’s Mother Sybrina Fulton “I” invested in ourselves - Choosing Gratitude and Glitter with Nancy Netherland “C” connected to a strong support network - Reclaiming Ourselves in Motherhood with Graeme Seabrook I also share about some epic plans for our third annual Mother’s Quest Manifesto Challenge, the one Graeme Seabrooke and I had created together in our conversation on the podcast two years ago. Taking place starting May 11th, in the free Mother’s Quest Facebook Group, it’s a 7-day journey to reclaiming ourselves, a chance to reflect together, along a new process I’m naming “CHOOSE,” and to create or refine our own manifestos for living our lives, yes even in the midst of a pandemic. Sign up here to join us. As for me, I’ve learned on Mother’s Day, that in addition to spending time with my children, I need some time to myself. So, today I’ll be going on my favorite milestone hike, and when I reach the summit, I’ll sit down and listen to my favorite meditation, one called “Teshuvah” or “Return” in Hebrew, that brings new meaning to the idea of setting out on a journey and returning home. Of losing our center and finding it again. So, this Mother’s Day, I invite you to find your center again as you listen to this episode, and ask yourself some of the same questions I’ve been exploring. In what ways have you been feeling trapped? When was the last time you felt connected to your purpose? And what might it take for you to open a door for yourself…to choose yourself...and to take even just one tentative step closer to your version of an E.P.I.C. life? One Possible Next Step: Join Us for the Mother’s Quest Manifesto Challenge The Mother’s Quest Manifesto Challenge is a 7-day experience that will move you through a series of reflective prompts to support you in creating or refining a "manifesto" of your own to become an anchor in your life in these years that you are raising your children. In addition to reflective prompts that I'll share live in the group each morning, I've invited a different mother to also go live, to share their journey and manifestos and also to offer a tool or practice that would support the prompt we're reflecting on. This year, I'll be exploring a new acronym mnemonic and framework "CHOOSE" that captures the process I went through when I claimed my manifesto...a process I realized has been with me in all the other times of my life when I shifted a perspective and moved myself forward in a powerful way. Here is what’s in store for you in the next 7 days. 5/10 Mother's Day with Graeme Seabrook - Both Graeme and I will be live in the group at some point to wish everyone a Happy Mother's Day, welcome new members, share about why we co-created the challenge two years ago, and set the frame for the week. 5/11 Day 1: C with Lindsay Pera - "Claim" the experience or opportunity in front of you that calls you to something different; sometimes these are even painful moments you would not choose for yourself. Sometimes these feel like a "sign" that calls to you in mysterious ways. What is the "spark" for you? 5/12 Day 2: H with Jadah Sellner - "Hold space for reflection" give yourself an opportunity to pause and make meaning of what is happening so you can learn from it and consciously move forward in a different way 5/13 Day 3: O with Nic Strack - "Own the perspective" that is NOT serving you. What story are you telling yourself that feels outdated? Or what way of looking at something is feeling out of alignment or holding you back? Before you can move forward, it's important to really look at where you are now. 5/14 Day 4: O with Jamie Greenwood - "Own a more empowering perspective" explore a new way of looking at something that resonates for you and that returns a sense of power to you 5/15 Day 5: S with Amy Walsh and Elsie Escober - "Stake in the ground" put your stake in the ground and claim this new perspective by expressing it clearly (and sharing when/if you feel comfortable). This is the day when the manifesto itself comes into form. I've invited several key guests this day who will each offer a different creation method that you can utilize to help express yourself. 5/16 Day 6: E with Jessica Stong - "Explore one next step" begin to close the gap between where you are now and where you want to be by taking setting intention for one action. 5/17 Day 7: Reflection and Celebration Circle An opportunity to come together via zoom after the challenge is over to reflect on the process, lessons learned and to share our manifestos with one another. In honor of Mother’s Day, I’m releasing episodes each week in the month of May that I will think will help us pause from the busyness and prioritize and invest in ourselves. I found a powerful guide for this purpose in Elena Lipson, someone I met through another mentor and coach of mine, Lindsay Pera, who beautifully dedicated this episode. As a retreat leader, speaker, writer, coach and podcaster, Elena inspires women to redefine the hustle in exchange for creating a life they love with what she calls the Feminine Metrics of success: Pleasure, Play, Ease, Grace and Trusting Your Own Pace. In this conversation, we explore Elena’s journey from a life that began in Russia to one based today in the fresh air of the Pacific Northwest with her husband of over 19 years and their teenage son Miles. The best adjective I could think of to describe this conversation is “juicy” filled with so much goodness, insights, and examples for how to connect to our bodies, speak our desires, and lean into presence and inquiry instead of assumption... with ourselves, our children and our partners. In fact, toward the end of the conversation, we begin to explore how we can keep the “pilot light” burning in our romantic relationships, so if you’re listening with children around, you may want to put in some earbuds. I left this conversation recommitted to building presence in my life, with greater awareness of the importance of body, heart, gut, and brain alignment, and excited to explore Elena’s challenge to us to get in touch with what we really want and then to ask for it. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did and that it sparks a shift in you, as it did me, to claim our self-care and speak our desires. Much appreciation, P.S. As you'll hear in the episode, Elena agreed to share more on the topic of "Movement and Pleasure" through a presentation in the Mother's Quest Facebook Group. Check out the resources below to get access to that recorded session with Elena! P.S.S.Know someone who would love this conversation? Hello and welcome to this episode with mindfulness educator, corporate trainer, podcast host and author of “Mindful Parenting in a Messy World,” Michelle Gale. This conversation, rooted in how to bring more equanimity to our lives–finding our center of calm in the storm–came to me just when I needed it most, during a start to my fall season marked by big school transitions for my children, travel away from home, and supporting my family after my father’s bypass heart surgery. In the midst of all of that, it was such a gift to have this time with Michelle, whose journey brought her from working in technology startups like Twitter to a deep dive in mindfulness training. Michelle draws on that training today as an advisor to organizations like Wisdom 2.0, in trainings with corporations like Disney and Google, for summits and workshops for parents that she organizes, and as a parent with her own two boys at home. An awareness of our impact in the day to day, through being a mindful parent, is something that Michelle embodies in her own parenting, in the appreciation she describes for her own mother, a single parent who adopted Michelle at the age of four months old, and in the ways that she makes mindfulness relatable and accessible to those she teaches. I learned so much from Michelle in the time we spent together, about answering our own calls for life-long learning, about slowing down, raising our awareness and making the implicit explicit, of the importance of bringing compassion, especially during times of transition, and how to draw on our experience as mothers as a source of learning and transformation. When we began, I asked Michelle to lead us through a Three Breath Practice which I heard her share about on Deborah Reber’s TILT Parenting Podcast. The practice became the bookends for this episode, the opening that allowed us each to make intentions for our time together, and the challenge that Michelle invites us to integrate into our lives. As you listen to this episode, I invite you to slow down by taking your own three breaths with us, tap into Michelle’s intention for finding “equanimity,” your center in the midst of chaos, and open yourself to Michelle’s wisdom. If you do, I’m certain you’ll find more of your calm in the storm and connect more fully to your own mindful parenting in a messy world. In This Episode We Talk About: The Three Breath Practice and how I’ve begun using it to help me make better decisions about how to use my time. The concept of “equanimity” and the importance of creating awareness and space for our discomfort so that we can come back to our center. Michelle’s appreciation for “Attachment Theory” through the lens of her own experience being adopted at the age of four months. Also the realization that she doesn’t have a newborn photo and how that drove her inquiry about who was mothering her before she was adopted. Michelle’s journey to mindfulness and how she roots her practice in the day to day experience of mothering, especially in the challenging moments, like when our children can’t fall asleep alone or when they struggle with homework. Michelle’s ritual before sitting down to do creative work that she has introduced to her children as well before they do homework. Michelle’s passion for changing the landscape of how corporations think about supporting parents and the E.P.I.C. snapshot moment that happened for Michelle during a training at Macy’s. How her experience in circle and community enabled Michelle to call more of that connection into her life and more about the tools she uses to “call in”. How Michelle is bringing her mindfulness practices to her health, especially as she navigates the transition to menopause and the hormonal swings and changes that come with it. Katie’s beautiful dedication shines a light, through the example of her mother Linda, of the ways we can make an impact in our day to day lives through being a mindful, loving parent. You can connect with Katie on Facebook, Instagram or through her website. This Week’s Challenge: Michelle encourages us to find a place in our life where we can consciously use the 3 Breaths Practice that she modeled in the episode. The practice includes: Focusing on your breath coming in and out Letting your body relax; and, Asking yourself, what’s really important and what really matters? By noticing an area of our lives that needs more consciousness (like reaching for our phone for distraction for instance) and using this practice, we can invite more intentionality, awareness, connection, and equanimity into our lives. Welcome to another new episode of the Mother’s Quest Podcast, one I’m sharing after a short break, so I could focus on transitioning my children into the new academic year, welcoming in the Jewish New Year and supporting my parents as my father recovers from bypass heart surgery (he is doing much better and already plotting to get back on the golf course!) During this time of reflection and connection to family, it feels right to bring forward this episode on ancestry with Nicka Smith, a professional photographer, speaker, host, and documentarian with more than 19 years of experience as a genealogist. I learned about Nicka through my friend and previous podcast guest Jenjii Hysten, one of Nicka’s biggest cheerleaders, who regularly acknowledges Nicka’s expertise in African ancestored genealogy and her ability to connect young people to their ancestry. Nicka’s experience and accomplishments are vast: she has edited and designed volumes of family history that include narratives, photos, and genealogical information and is the host of BlackProGen LIVE, an innovative web show focused on people of color genealogy and family history. Using Nicka’s life experience, this episode goes deep in how to give ourselves permission to step into becoming our own family historians, the importance of connecting the threads of our ancestors to who we are today, the challenges and emotions involved in tracing genealogy for African American people whose ancestors were enslaved, and the idea that we can become today the ancestors we aspire to be for our descendants by taking the political and social action our times demand. With Nicka’s guidance, I’ve started the process of connecting the threads of my ancestors. To be honest, I was a little skeptical that I would find anything particularly interesting. But, while visiting my parents in Los Angeles, my mother and I stayed up late on the couch looking on ancestry.com at documents connected to her mother, my grandmother, Ruth. My mother shared details about Ruth’s life in a previous episode’s dedication, that I’ll link in the show notes. We knew that her mother had married (what we say in Yiddush) a “nogoodnick” who left my grandmother destitute with three young girls to raise on her own. That night on the couch, we found a strange named document connected to my grandmother’s records titled Hebrew Orphan Asylum of New York City. We clicked on the link and soon saw evidence that my grandmother and her youngest sister had been left in the care of an orphanage. But that some time after, my great grandmother, came back to get them. My grandmother, who was only 2 at the time, never spoke of this to us and may not have known. But now my mother and I know that our ancestor, against the odds, found a way to reunited with her children. Had she not, my grandmother’s fate would surely have been different, and my mother and I might not have been here today. I know now that my discoveries as my family historian are just beginning. I hope this episode and what I uncovered about my great grandmother give you permission to step into becoming your family historian, to explore the untold stories of your ancestors, and to weave the threads between yourself, your ancestors and your descendants, that will help you more fully live your E.P.I.C. life. Much appreciation, Julie Neale In This Episode We Talk About: How a simple hobby back in college turned out to be Nicka’s passion and purpose in life. The diverse community and landscape that shaped Nicka’s worldview The layers to Nicka’s “genealogical cake” including revelations she learned about her family ancestry: the Native American blood in her family, the fact that her great great grandfather was legally married to a white woman in the late 1800’s, and that her ancestors were enslaved on the same plantation for more than 30 years by a slave-owner from western Massachusetts. Nicka’s ancestor who took great risks to advocate for his birthright as a Cherokee Freedmen to the Committee on Indian Affairs and the impact that had on Nicka. How Nicka’s 3 year old son teaches her to experiment and to explore new experiences How we can use tools like ancestry.com and a database of documents to help us explore our lineage.. The life-long trauma experienced still by Nicka’s grandmother’s grandmother, in her 90’s, from being forcibly separated from your parents during their enslavement and how that connects to the children separated at the border today. The case of Plessy vs. Ferguson and how the descendants of slaves and slave owners now unite to fight for civil rights The threads that connect us to who we are across generations and the ways that Nicka’s ancestors activism have shaped her own. You can connect with Carrie on Facebook, Instagram or through her website. This Week’s Challenge: Nicka challenges everyone to give yourself permission to step into the role of family historian. Sign up for an account with ancestry.com and begin with yourself to trace your family tree backward. Investigate to trace your own lineage and see how history repeats itself. Take a deep dive, and ask yourself these questions: How did we get here? Who immigrated? Why? And apply that to your present.
