Story Key Notes:
Joining “Addiction Talk” is five-time Olympic medalist Greg Louganis. Before becoming who many consider the most remarkable American diver, Louganis turned to alcohol and drugs in his early years for several reasons: his feeling of not fitting in due to being adopted at nine months, having a darker complexion due to his Samoan heritage, and when on the U.S. National Team, bullied for being gay. His addiction to pills and alcohol and depression led to multiple suicide attempts, including one after winning the silver medal in the 1976 Olympic Games. After realizing drinking and smoking began interfering with his diving, he attended rehab and therapy. He stopped drinking entirely in 1983, one year before the 1984 Olympics, where he became the third man in the sport's history to win gold medals in both springboard and platform. In this episode, Louganis will discuss his journey and post-Olympic life in recovery.
This was any divers dream come true! Interviewing the GREATEST OF ALL TIME Greg Louganis! Join us in enjoying this amazing talk with Mr. Louganis.
Greg Louganis, simply put, is the greatest diver of all time, and over 30 years later, his records remain unbroken. Even so, many people remember Louganis for hitting his head during a dive at the '88 Olympics, for being HIV-positive, for being an out gay man in the '80s, and for all the controversy surrounding these topics. Join us as Louganis shares his struggles since retiring from diving, including bouts with mental illness, suicide attempts, and substance use issues. He also discusses how he is doing now and whether pop culture portrayals of him in shows like “Family Guy” ruffle his feathers. Greg Louganis is considered the greatest diver in history, having won Four Olympic gold medals in the three-meter and 10-meter diving events. He is also the first man in Olympic history to sweep the diving events in consecutive Olympic Games. Greg won a record 47 national titles and 13 world championships throughout his diving career and was the first person to receive a perfect score of 10 from all seven judges in an international event. At the Seoul 1988 Games he suffered a concussion during the preliminary rounds of the three-meter event that almost put an end to his medal hopes. He competed despite the injury, claiming two gold medals and becoming the first man in Olympic history to sweep the diving events in consecutive Olympic Games. After his competitive diving career, Louganis became a LGBTQ+ activist and worked frequently with the Human Rights Campaign to defend the civil liberties of the LGBTQ+ community and those diagnosed with HIV.I met Greg in Australia while a contestant on a reality TV show called Celebrity Splash and have since stayed in contact. The thing I respect most about Greg is his selflessness and vulnerability - a trait that he has used to help millions of people around the world. 4-Time Olympic Diver, GREG LOUGANIS joins us for today's program!!!! We dive deep into his road to being an Olympian and the sense of duty he felt to be great for the people of the world.
It is not every day you get the opportunity to interview someone considered to be a GOAT -- the greatest of all time. It was such a thrill for Eva to chat with Greg Louganis, four-time Olympic diving champion and the greatest diver of all time. Greg took part in his first Olympic Games, the 1976 Montreal Games, aged just 16 and claimed silver in the 10m platform. Four years later, he was firmly established as the world’s best diver, but the United States’ boycott of the 1980 Moscow Games meant that he had to wait another four years to taste Olympic gold. At the 1984 Los Angeles Games, Greg found himself competing in front of his home crowd in California. He won the gold medal in both the 3m springboard and 10m platform events. This made him the first Olympian in 56 years to achieve this spectacular double. He repeated this feat in the 1988 Summer Olympics, becoming the only man and the second diver in Olympic history to sweep the diving events in consecutive Olympic Games. Thank you Greg for inspiring Eva and the Big Dreamers with your incredible life story and the lessons you shared about hard work, overcoming obstacles, and never giving up.

We have a legend in the house this week! It's part one of our interview with Sydney 2000 gold medalist Laura Wilkinson. In this episode Laura explains how the sport works -- and something unusual that a lot of divers have in common. Follow Laura: Facebook Insta Twitter Website She also has her own inspirational podcast called Hope Sports where she interviews athletes about their journeys on and off the field, their successes and their struggles. We highly recommend it! We also talked about that epic moment from the Seoul 1988 diving competition, when Greg Louganis smacked his head on the board--and still won the gold. Plus some Tokyo 2020 mascot updates and a little slice of TOFU! Don't forget to support the show--it all helps to bring you a better podcast and more features leading up to Tokyo 2020! This Sunday February 5th at 9pm EST Robert will be speaking with Olympic Gold Medalist Greg Louganis. Openly gay and HIV-positive Olympic diving legend Greg Louganis wants to show off his moves on ABC’s ‘Dancing with the Stars’ next season. Louganis fans have created a Facebook campaign to ABC to extend an invitation to Louganis, and the campaign is getting some attention. Greg is a five time World Champion and holds 47 National Championship titles. At the Pan Am Games, he earned six Gold Medals, and in 1985, he was awarded the Sullivan Award as the “Nation’s most outstanding amateur athlete.”However, what most people remember about Greg is that he went on to win Olympic Gold at the 1988 Games despite striking the back of his head on the springboard during the preliminaries. He attempted a reverse 2½ somersault pike in the ninth round of the prelims, and he hit his head on the board and fell into the water. Thirty-five minutes later, after receiving stitches to his scalp wound, he resumed diving. The following day, he hit all 11 dives and easily won the Olympic Gold Medal. After he tested positive for HIV in 1988,he recounted his story in a best-selling book Breaking the Surface. The book spent five weeks at number one on the New York Times Best Seller list. His story was also documented in the 1996 Showtime movie Breaking the Surface: The Greg Louganis Story with Mario Lopez playing the lead and Louganis narrating. Greg has worn many hats, Actor, Dancer, Olympian, Diver, Dog Trainer, Speaker, AIDS Activist, Equality and Diversity Activist, and yes he would love to be on Dancing With The Stars in honor of his Mom’s memory, Frances Louganis, “My Mom would have loved to see me on that show” says Greg.
In an inspirational speech Olympic twice-gold medalist Greg Louganis, of Samoan/Swedish heritage, and a UCI drama alumnus, Friday 10 June 2011 addressed graduating seniors at UCI's Arts School graduation (the event also included graduates from the Physical Sciences). Louganis, who was HIV-positive when he won the two golds in diving in the 1988 Olympics, said he is proof HIV/AIDS is no longer a "death sentence." He exhorted UCI's graduating students in the Arts and in Physical Sciences to be imaginative {"to explore your imagination") and have trust in fellow human beings, even though he himself was at times overly trusting of others ("I'd rather trust... than be cynical"). The UCI drama alumnus said this was his first graduation he ever attended.
