This week we're exploring the idea that if you water and care for your lawn, you'll find that the grass is greener right where you are. In essence, if you tenderly care for your marriage and water it with the Word it will grow and thrive. The statistics of marriage that were mentioned can be found below 67% or 2/3 of second marriages end in divorce in comparison to 50% of traditional marriages. For third marriages that statistic of divorce is 74% or around 3/4! The Marriage Study mentioned was a 2002 study by the Institute for American Values by Linda J. Waite, Don Browning, William J. Doherty, Maggie Gallagher, Ye Luo, and Scott M. Stanley. A part of the study found that two out of three unhappily married adults who avoided divorce or separation ended up happily married five years later. In this week's episode, Pastor Bob explores the genius of marriage. And not just any idea of marriage, but the idea defined by the Bible, the oldest record of a covenant relationship or union. The genius of marriage leads to strong families that become strong communities, churches, and, therefore, strong nations. He explains the unique account of how the institution of marriage was created—before law, or any other institution, or even worship, there was marriage. For two decades, Maggie Gallagher was a leading voice writing about the importance of permanent, monogamous marriage to society. At first, that included pointing out the problems with divorce, feminism and single parenthood. Then as same-sex marriage became the predominant issue, Gallagher became the public face of the movement against it. A few years after the Supreme Court made gay marriage legal across the 50 states, Gallagher switched gears when Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone of San Francisco asked her to be Executive Director of the Benedict XVI Institute for Sacred Music and Divine Worship, which he founded in 2013. She says that to avoid despair, we have to build beautiful things. In this interview Maggie discusses: How becoming a single mother in college led her to focus her career on the defense of marriage Her time in the pro-marriage movement, including co-founding the National Organization for Marriage Why the defenders of marriage were less effective than the pro-life movement Why certain critiques of the pro-life movement's political involvement are unfair American classical liberalism's inability to think about social institutions Meeting Archbishop Cordileone and getting involved in the BXVI Institute The BXVI Institute's patronage of the arts, especially the liturgical arts The Archbishop's campaign of prayer and fasting for the conversion of Nancy Pelosi Links www.BenedictInstitute.org Benedict XVI Institute on YouTube https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC4a0pooErfPoWck0xc7WHGg Maggie Gallagher, Enemies of Eros https://www.amazon.com/Enemies-Eros-Revolution-Killing-Marriage/dp/0929387007 Maggie Gallagher and Linda Waite, The Case for Marriage https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/184776/the-case-for-marriage-by-linda-j-waite-and-maggie-gallagher/ This podcast is a production of CatholicCulture.org. National Polygamy Advocate ™ Mark Henkel appeared on Pat Robertson's show, "The 700 Club," on the Christian Broadcasting Network, CBN, on August 16, 2005. For history archiving purposes, Mark Henkel's taped appearance on this specific segment helped "made history." Namely, for the first time in history, a renowned Christian organization (The 700 Club), as led by a worldwide-known Christian leader (Pat Robertson), had publicly acknowledged "Christian Polygamy" as "evangelical Christians" on TV and even said the exact words of "Christian Polygamy" and "Christian polygamists." The two words "Christian" and "Polygamy" were no longer a supposed "contradiction in terms." History had been made indeed. For this segment, Mark Henkel had been previously "interviewed on tape" by a professional woman named Kim Bonney. To hear her lengthy interview with Mark Henkel, listeners will want to hear Episode 99 of this podcast, posted February 5, 2020. The final segment that aired on August 16, 2006 (despite a number of times being "bumped" from previously scheduled dates to air) was instead reported by David Brody. The scope of this segment unfortunately intended to scare its major Christian audience with the notion that the then-growing efforts to legalize same sex marriage would supposedly result in legalized group marriage, polyamory, and polygamy too. The premise - and especially the early part of the segment - initially focused more on salacious notions pertaining to group marriage and polyamory in order to indeed "scare" the network's Christian audience. The report included statements from many then-big names such as Stanley Kurtz ("conservative" lecturer and pundit), Maggie Gallagher (president of the Institute for Marriage and Public Policy), and David Frum (albeit famous among conservatives as a "faux conservative") - all to speak against such supposed "changes to marriage." Contrary to their opinions, the report also included statements from Elizabeth Emens (former University of Chicago Law School Professor), an unnamed then-President of the American Civil Liberties Union (claiming that the ACLU would "defend polygamy" – which never really happened as the ACLU ultimately remained silent regarding polygamy in the following decade to come), Robin Trask (editor for the polyamory magazine, Loving More), and of course, the one and only advocate for actual polygamy on the segment, Mark Henkel (Founder of the TruthBearer.org Organization for Christian Polygamy). As the concluding voice to make the final argument for polygamy, Mark Henkel was able to make a number of quick yet important soundbites in the segment, including his "circular argument of law and sin" soundbite. Most importantly, the reporter, in the end, genuinely treated the concept of Christian Polygamy itself separately yet surprisingly fairly. The reporter kindly and accurately introduced Mark Henkel with the following QUOTE that made history: "Polygamy has a range of defenders including some evangelical Christians. Mark Henkel is the founder of the Christian Polygamy organization, TruthBearer. Christian polygamists believe husbands are called to love their wives as Christ loves the churches." That introduction is repeated and looped a couple of times at the end of this podcast to demonstrate its profound history-making significance. Yes, with this segment, history had been made on August 16, 2005. http://www.NationalPolygamyAdvocate.com --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/nationalpolygamyadvocate/support

To support this ministry financially, visit: https://www.oneplace.com/donate/1085/29 There’s nothing funny about making mistakes when they affect your finances. Well, if financial mistakes are the enemy, knowing your enemy is the first step in defeating it.Rob West has a list of those blunders so you can avoid them. And how do we do that? Well, certainly you want to learn from your mistakes so that you don’t repeat them. And the first step isadmittingthem. The second step is knowing that God forgives all of our mistakes including those with money. 1 John 1:9 reads,If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. So let’s look ahead so we can steer clear of financial mistakes whenever possible. This is hardly an exhaustive list, but these are some of the bigger mistakes people commonly make: Not realizing how expensive health care is.Having a serious medical condition without insurance or medical cost-sharing such asChristian Healthcare Ministries(chministries.org) can wipe out your finances for years to come. Not havingdisabilityinsurance.Have you ever thought about what would happen if you suddenly couldn’t work because of a health issue or an accident?Don’t count on Social Security disability benefits. It’s tough to qualify and the benefits don’t match most other policies. Getting divorced. Even after attorney and court fees and the dividing of assets, the financial impact goes on for years. In her book,The Case for Marriage, author Maggie Gallagher shows that the majority of people who weathered marriage problems were actually happier years later than those who divorced, in addition to being much better off financially. Day trading stocks and trying to time the market. The stock platform Etoro surveyed day traders and their habits and found that 4 out of 5 of them lose an average of 36% of their invested money over the course of a year. It’s a wonder day traders hang on for so long. It’s probably because day trading is so much like gambling, which we know can be addicting. Folks forget about their losses and just look for the next big win. Before they know it, they can be in deep financial trouble. So stay away from both day trading and gambling and your bank account will thank you. Next, Rob turns to our callers and answers the following questions: I’ve got a pretty sizable amount of money in my retirement account at work and am considering taking about $350,000 out to help us move to a better house. Is there a way to do that without a huge tax hit?I was able to purchase my current house outright. We’re looking at getting a second house in Florida and are wondering if we should take out a mortgage to pay for that second home? And if so, should the mortgage actually be on the first or the second home?We have enough in savings if we include part of our Emergency Savings to pay off our home.We would probably be left with about two months of expenses in reserve. Is it wise to do this?We learned that the reason to get out of debt is not just to have more money, but to have more money to give. However, there are so many charitable needs out there. How do I know where the need is greatest? And is it better to give a little to a lot of organizations or to give more to fewer organizations?I’m eligible to retire from my job.My options are to take a lower annual pension along with a lump sum, or to take a higher annual pension with no lump sum.Is there a Biblical perspective to help me determine the best decision to make? Despite our ever-greater mobility and even more efficient connectivity, sociologists continue to note that Americans struggle to form lasting, fulfilling relationships of all kinds but especially marriage. We face a very real epidemic of loneliness, one that is, not coincidentally, accompanied by a steady decline in marriage.          According to Pew Research, marriage rates have fallen to historic lows over the last thirty years, especially among younger people. At the same time, the typical age at first marriage has climbed to a historic high.          Increasingly, Americans who are looking for love can't find it, at least not in the traditional ways. And so they are turning online. A new study by researchers at Johns Hopkins University reports that online dating has now replaced the church, family members, and mutual friends as the primary way American couples meet.          Now, in no way do I wish to knock online dating per se. Many happily married Christian couples began their stories together via an online dating service. I'd suggest online dating is filling a void left as traditional social institutions fail. At the same time, plummeting marriage rates and spiking loneliness rates indicate that even our best technologies will never fill the hole left as families, churches, and community become less central to our life together.          The loss or decline of core social institutions in recent decades is well-documented. Just in my lifetime, extended family, youth clubs, civic organizations, and the church have all become less important to more people than ever before. This seismic social shift is a problem for many reasons, not least of which because these were places and means by which couples used to meet and connect. It's simply impossible to replace such timeless, local, and embodied ties with apps!          In fact, it's no exaggerating that this is even a question of how the next generation will come into being—and what will play the central relational roles in their lives. After all, marriage is not a stand-alone institution. It's part of a social fabric that's tearing apart. As fewer couples get together and form strong marriages, the faster the tear grows, and the further apart people drift.          Writing at Quillette recently, Mary Eberstadt describes how the de-centering of marriage and family has resulted in and reinforced the explosion of sexual and gender identities. Increasingly, young people are forced to answer the basic human question “who am I?” without a mother and a father, without siblings, an extended family, a community, or a church body to help. So many are left only with a letter in an acronym or an adopted sense of historical grievance to center their identities. No wonder, as Eberstadt describes in her new book “Primal Screams,” so many identities today are meager and fragile, and the movements built around them more and more unhinged.            Yet, this culture of identity and family crisis is also a tremendous opportunity for the church, one not without historical precedent. As Rodney Stark observes, one of the reasons early Christianity grew so rapidly in the second century was that Roman young men turned to the church to find eligible young women. The church was full of eligible young women because early Christians had faithfully rescued Roman girls from infanticide and raised them in their communities.          Years ago, I heard Maggie Gallagher suggest that it might be time for churches to get back to this kind of work. While we rescue babies from abortion in word and deed, perhaps we should also get serious about introducing singles to each other? Perhaps married Christian couples should, you know, “meddle” a bit more and host some matchmaking dinners?          While there's a universally repeated “ring by spring” joke across every Christian college campus, perhaps marriage opportunism is a good reason to encourage your son or daughter to attend one. Where else, other than working summer staff at a Christian camp, will young believers be surrounded by so many like-minded peers of the opposite sex? Having spent years watching this process in action, I promise it works.          The Body of Christ has a unique potential role to play in reversing the decline of marriage and the epidemic of loneliness. If we do, those looking for love may one day open the doors of a church instead of an app.

About Chesterton Academy and the Cultura Vitae LectureThe result of a grass-roots movement of parents, Chesterton Academy is a pro-family, independent high school offering an integrated, college preparatory curriculum centered on the Incarnation of Jesus Christ. Focusing on the classics, the school develops complete thinkers who learn to draw on faith and reason for the purpose of building a culture of life. The Cultura Vitae Lecture Series was established during Chesterton Academy's inaugural academic year as an effort of the school to educate the greater community and to build what Pope John Paul II called “the culture of life.” The series is dedicated to bringing scholars and accomplished individuals to speak on a variety of issues that directly affect the protection of the human person, the family, and the building up of the common good. Gay Marriage: Evidence from Europe?

As the Senate prepares to debate the Federal Marriage Amendment many scholars are looking at evidence from Scandinavia, Belgium, and the Netherlands. Some observers have argued that experience in those countries shows that legal recognition of same-sex unions leads to a decline in traditional marriage and marital child rearing. A new book challenges that analysis. William N. Eskridge Jr. and Darren R. Spedale find that the argument often advanced is inconsistent with the Scandinavian evidence. In no way, they write, has marriage in the Nordic countries suffered from legalization of same-sex unions. A close look at the data suggests that the sanctioning of gay marriage in the United States would neither undermine marriage as an institution nor harm the well-being of children. Maggie Gallagher argues that the move toward gay marriage in Europe is part of a larger marriage crisis, including a powerful trend away from marriage as a social norm for childbearing and child rearing.
