Today's Topics: 1, 2, 3, 4) Gospel - Jn 8:31-42 - Jesus said to those Jews who believed in Him, "If you remain in My word, you will truly be My disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." They answered Him, "We are descendants of Abraham and have never been enslaved to anyone. How can you say, 'You will become free'?" Jesus answered them, "Amen, amen, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is a slave of sin. A slave does not remain in a household forever, but a son always remains. So if the Son frees you, then you will truly be free. I know that you are descendants of Abraham. But you are trying to kill Me, because My word has no room among you. I tell you what I have seen in the Father's presence; then do what you have heard from the Father." They answered and said to Him, "Our father is Abraham." Jesus said to them, "If you were Abraham's children, you would be doing the works of Abraham. But now you are trying to kill Me, a Man Who has told you the truth that I heard from God; Abraham did not do this. You are doing the works of your father!" So they said to Him, "We were not born of fornication. We have one Father, God." Jesus said to them, "If God were your Father, you would love Me, for I came from God and am here; I did not come on My own, but He sent Me." This week on A Podcast About Catholic Things, Eric (The Ambassador of Common Sense) and Dan (The Ambassador of Nonsense) discuss the state of the nation--America seems to be going down in flames. Father James Altman speaks with Bishop Michael Petro at General Flynn's and Clay Clark's ReAwaken America Tour in Virginia Beach, VA. In this interview Father James Altman discusses why he was canceled as a priest due to his comments on the vaccine, democrats, and abortion such as “You can't be a Catholic and a Democrat.” He also shares why Nancy Pelossi should have been ex-communicated from Catholicism, calls out the 17 Bishops who did support Archbishop Cordileone who did deny Pelosi Communion over her support of abortion rights saying where have they been on this issue during the last 50 years? Where have they been since they took office as a bishop in the Catholic Church? Why are they all of a sudden taking a stance is his argument. Altman is also very clear on his stance and perspective on Pope Francis stating he is as evil aas they come off camera. On camera he states Francis is a liar, only preaches pastorally when it suits him, and a teacher of false ideologies promoting it throughout the world. He also doesn't understand why Chelsea Clinton was invited to the Vatican when her mother and father are the biggest and vigorous supporters of murdering babies nor why Jesuit Priest James Martin who pushes homosexuality was also invited to the Vatican. James Altman is a Catholic priest who received attention in August 2020, in the months before the 2020 United States presidential election, Altman gained attention after appearing in a viral YouTube video. In the video, Altman stated that “You cannot be Catholic and be a Democrat”, due to the party's support of abortion legalization. He encouraged Catholic Democrats to “repent of your support of that party and its platform or face the fires of hell...There will be 60 million aborted babies standing at the gates of heaven barring your Democrat entrance.” Altman has since contended that the Jan. 6 riots in the U.S. Capitol by a medley of supporters of President Donald Trump and the QAnon movement were a “false flag.” His messages to parishioners in April parish bulletins claimed that the COVID-19 vaccines are an “experimental” use of “a genetic altering substance that modifies YOUR BODY - YOUR Temple of the Holy Spirit.” In May 2021, Altman announced that Callahan had requested his resignation as a pastor, and that he would contest the request with the diocese. In July, Callahan issued a decree for the removal of Altman as pastor from St. James the Less Parish.Callahan stated that Altman would remain a priest in the diocese, and continued to be paid, but would no longer be allowed to preach publicly. On Sunday, May 29, Pope Francis announced he would create 21 new cardinals this year, including American Bishop Robert McElroy of San Diego and several other surprise choices. 16 of the new cardinals are under 80 and will be able to vote in a conclave, meaning Pope Francis has now appointed just under two-thirds of the current cardinal-electors. As of December, that number will rise to 69 percent. This week on “Inside the Vatican,” host Colleen Dulle and veteran Vatican correspondent Gerard O'Connel discuss some of Pope Francis' most interesting picks for the college of cardinals. He has traditionally passed over so-called “cardinalatial sees,” big cities where the bishop has often been named a cardinal, in favor of bishops from underrepresented communities. This idea of Francis choosing the person over the place was evident in the case of the sole American bishop who was named a cardinal-designate this weekend: Bishop Robert McElroy of San Diego. Bishop McElroy, one of the leading intellectuals in the U.S. hierarchy, has been named while the bishops of two larger cities, Archbishop Gomez in Los Angeles and Archbishop Cordileone in San Francisco, were not. Gerry and Colleen discuss the message this appointment sends to the U.S. church, while dispelling speculation that Bishop McElroy was appointed in direct response to Archbishop Cordileone's decision to bar U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi from receiving communion. Then, Colleen and Gerry turn their focus to the global stage. Pope Francis named the first cardinal from the Dalit, or “untouchable,” caste in India. The hosts examine what effect this will have on India's leadership, which sees Christianity as a threat to the caste system. Gerry also tells the story behind Cardinal-designate Peter Ebere Okpaleke, a Nigerian prelate who was once rejected by the priests of a diocese for belonging to a different ethnic group. If we are what we eat, how could our consumption habits not be morally fraught? This week's guest, Robert Cruz, believes they are, and he wants Catholics to be more intentional about what goes on their dinner plates. Working in the meat department of his local grocery store opened Robert's eyes to the way meat is processed, marketed and sold—and inspired him to start a small regenerative farm on his own property. We ask Robert what Catholic social teaching says about ethical eating, how eating chickens he raised himself changed his relationship to food and animals, and why fake meat is not the morally superior option many vegetarians assume it to be. In Signs of the Times, Zac and Ashley weigh in on Archbishop Salvator Cordileone's decision to bar Speaker Nancy Pelosi from Communion because of her “aggressive” support for abortion rights. Plus, Pope Francis has named a new U.S. cardinal: Bishop Robert McElroy of San Diego. Hour 1 of The Drew Mariani Show on 5-31-22 JD Flynn from Pillar Catholic discusses the additional Bishops that have come forward to support Archbishop Cordileone - including Bishop Burbidge, to uphold the ban in Arlington VA, right outside Washington Dr. Bob Tiballi joins us for an update on the latest COVID news
Recent news about Archbishop Cordileone preventing Nancy Pelosi from receiving Communion ignited debate among faithful Catholics. Paul and Dominic chat about the deeper concerns: how some of the discussion we've seen online distorts the Church's teaching on the Eucharist and sin. More importantly, what could an appropriate response from faithful Catholics look like? We talk through the various aspects: personal responsibility, the Eucharist, scandal, competent authority, confusion, and the danger of knee-jerk opinions. “The Eucharist, although it is the fullness of sacramental life, is not a prize for the perfect but a powerful medicine and nourishment for the weak. These convictions have pastoral consequences that we are called to consider with prudence and boldness. Frequently, we act as arbiters of grace rather than its facilitators. But the Church is not a tollhouse; it is the house of the Father, where there is a place for everyone, with all their problems” (Evangelii Gaudium 47). Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone of San Francisco announced Friday, May 20, that he would bar Nancy Pelosi, the speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, from receiving holy communion in his diocese, which is also Ms. Pelosi's home diocese. His decision comes after a lengthy and polarized debate over the past two years among U.S. bishops over whether to mandate a blanket ban on pro-choice politicians receiving communion. Ultimately, and after direct intervention from the Vatican, the U.S. bishops decided not to pursue a joint pastoral teaching on the matter. The decision to deny communion would remain with each individual bishop. On “Inside the Vatican” this week, host Colleen Dulle asks Gerald O'Connell, America Vatican correspondent, how Archbishop Cordileone's statement has been received at the Vatican and whether the Vatican will intervene.. After the break, we look into a change Pope Francis made to canon law which would open leadership positions in priestly religious orders to members who are lay brothers, not priests. We'll talk about what effects this could have going forward. In the episode of Acton Unwind, Dylan Pahman, Sam Gregg, and Dan Hugger focus on the war in Ukraine and its religious context. What battles over ecclesiastic authority are involved? What is the Russian Orthodox Church saying about the conflict? The discussion then turns to the economic effects of the war upon the rest of the world, with particular focus on food production and distribution. Why are some countries affected more severely than others? Also among the discussion is a focus on China and its COVID lockdowns and growing economic problems. How is China moving away from its limited economic liberalization of the past? What does this mean for America's future relationship with China? Lastly, Nancy Pelosi has been recently barred from receiving holy communion by the Archbishop of San Francisco. What makes the Pelosi case different from instances of Roman Catholic politicians in conflict received Church teaching on abortion? What does this case say about how many Americans view the relationship between church and state? I recently had a friend of mine gracefully challenge me about a story I posted on Instagram which read "You cannot be Catholic and Pro-Choice". What I really meant was that you cannot be Catholic and pro-abortion, but I think that was sufficiently clear. We often hear the more tolerant side of Christianity voice opinions that some of us are too judgmental and harsh on those who disagree with us on certain social and political issues. What many fail to realize is that at their core these issues are not simply about politics and society, but more importantly they are rooted in morality. And morality matters. Our understanding of morality and our willingness to live in accordance with it ultimately determine the eternal destiny of our soul. So are we too harsh on pro-abortion Christians? Can you really be Catholic and pro-choice? I share my answers to these questions in today's episode. *Note*: This episode was recorded before Archbishop Cordileone made his statement regarding Nancy Pelosi receiving Holy Communion. I support that decision and some of the content from today's episode is relevant to that, but does not explicitly discuss it since I did not know about it at the time. The Cale Clarke Show - Today's issues from a Catholic perspective.
Cale discusses this afternoon's breaking news about Archbishop Cordileone banning Nancy Pelosi from receiving the Eucharist; The Shakespearean fall of Phil Mickleson, last year's PGA champion, who now finds himself a pariah; plus The Week That Was!
Gloria interviews the Archbishop of San Francisco, Salvatore Cordileone, about a statement he just released restricting the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, from receiving the Sacrament of the Holy Communion. Speaker Pelosi is a Catholic, who represents the congressional district of San Francisco. In his statement, the Archbishop laments that Speaker Pelosi's position on abortion has become more extreme over the years. He says that he's made numerous attempts to speak with her to help her understand this grave evil, but to no avail. He states, “I have determined that the point has come in which I must make a public declaration that she is not to be admitted to Holy Communion unless and until she publicly repudiate her support for abortion “rights” and confess and receive absolution for her cooperation in this evil in the sacrament of Penance. I have accordingly sent her a Notification to this effect, which I have now made public.” Gloria speaks with Archbishop Cordileone about his decision, how it came to be and what consequences it will have on an already polarized political climate in the country, and in the Catholic Church.
