Professor Tim Evans of Middlesex University assesses Liz Truss's first month in office and wonders if the era of the Magic Money Tree is coming to an end. As part of Belfast and District Trades Council's May Day Programme, Trademark's Stiofán Ó Nualláín gives a take on the Magic Money Tree, MMT and why it's not quite socialism.

From minting coins to digital currencies, Anne McElvoy is joined by Harvard economist Kenneth Rogoff, British Museum coin curator Tom Hockenhull, historian of science Patricia Fara and political economist Ann Pettifor to explore the physical and virtual life of money as we approach the fiftieth anniversary of Decimal Day in the UK. The discussion ranges from the symbolism of images we find stamped on individual coins to the cashless society, and whether or not there is a magic money tree. February 15th 1971 was the date when the old British system of pounds, shilling and pence changed, following earlier unsuccessful attempts and the founding of a Decimal Association in 1841. But what is our relationship with money at the moment in a world of bitcoin, and paying by credit cards not loose change ? Bank Regulation, more bottom-up or more top-down? Mike and David debate the need for regulation of banks and for rules separating the high street commercial banks from the speculative activity (ie gambling) of the investment banking sector. More broadly, they consider what is driving the risky behaviour of the banking sector. Is it lack of regulation or is it toxic regulations that amount to special privileges? Once again the issues surrounding fractional reserve banking feature in this debate. But the discussion goes further into the murky world of investment banking, with securitised assets, derivatives and other exotic financial products. A world of fraud, gambling and financial fog. How much much separation is needed, or even is possible. Can the real economy be insulated from the speculators? These questions and more are asked as the conversation hones in on more specific matters for the ongoing deconstruction of the magic money tree.

In this episode of Deconstructing the Magic Money Tree, Mike and David look at central banking, the Bank of International Settlements, the Bank of England and the "Firepower" they aim at the UK economy. They discuss some frightening statistics concerning money supply growth and ponder whether the real economy can escape the hole dug by our central bankers since the turn of the century can. They note that easy money and ideological compliance dominate central banking, with the financial system and political system now aligned and both all-in. In conclusion the risk of a future reset at a time of crisis is explored and the scale of this vent is sketched.

What is Money? Mike and David discuss the types of Money and then delve into the strange world of fractional reserve banking where wealth, it is claimed, can spontaneously spring into existence from the void. Government money printing and real silver and gold coins are examined and the true scale of loss of value to inflation is identified. They then return to the bizarre world of fractional reserve commercial banks and debt-based money generation and consider what exactly happens when you borrow money to buy a Jaguar. Bank runs, inflation, boom and bust, central banking and the funding of wars all make in appearance in this wide-ranging conversation. As they draw to a close, the key benefit of silver and gold as currency is seen to be as much political as economic.

In this episode, Mike and David look at the current British Government avowed intention to "Build, Build, Build!" They discuss the infrastructure funding options available: taxation, borrowing and inflationary monetary expansion. They examine peak-taxation, and consider whether government debt is harmful and what the implications of debt funding are for future generations. Finally, the conversation returns to the boom-generating effects of inflationary monetary policies and the subsequent busts. Against a background of unprecedented monetary intervention by central banks, they ponder whether the effect will be to bring about a currency collapse and a "Great Reset".

This week we find ourselves moored in the U-bend of Ghislaine Maxwell's toilet waiting for our final confrontation with the evil Ghost of Jeffrey Epstein. Will we learn the secret of who killed him? Is there a global Illuminati? All these questions and more won't be answered. This week we will also look at the politics of social welfare. We explain how Fredo chocolate bars can teach you about inflation and how governments' use unemployment as a political tool and where the magic money tree is buried.

Mike and David return to the questions arising from Boris Johnston's "Build-build-build" policy. In a wide ranging discussion they cover international development in Africa, the political decision-making system as it contrasts with economic decision-making and the fact that, with modern technology, small is beautiful. Illustrating thoughts with Empire railway-building and Glasgow trams, they move on to the unseen effects of state infrastructure investment. In the end, the destructive effects of perverse state policies are considered.
