Crude oil prices slipped some, with West Texas Intermediate down 0.55% to $109.99 and Brent off 0.57% to $112.29. But grains continue to reflect rising pressures on current and future supply, with wheat up more than 7% and corn up nearly 5%. And it doesn't appear as though Russian President Vladimir Putin is any closer to succumbing to the global sanctions regime that's targeted the country's oligarchs and hamstrung the lives of ordinary Russians. Indeed, missile attacks against Ukraine's major cities are intensifying. Meanwhile, the fed funds futures market is still pricing in five interest rate hikes by the Federal Reserve, as potential inflationary pressures increase. Michael Gayed, Portfolio Manager at Toroso Investments, and Frances Coppola, who writes and speaks on banking, finance, and economics, join Real Vision's Ash Bennington to assess the Russia-Ukraine crisis and its broader global impact. We started off the programme by asking the independent banking analyst Frances Coppola how in practical the newly announced EU sanctions work. Then we moved on to the Russian economy and asked Kallum Pickering, a global economist for Berenberg bank here in London how it would be affected by these sanctions. Next, our Markets Report guest Michael Hughes, an independent economist, told us that that the cost of agricultural goods was going to be something to watch when markets re-open in the coming hours. We then have a look at the British multinational energy giant BP. It announced Sunday afternoon it was to quit its 20 per cent stake in the Russian state oil firm Rosneft, with its chief exec Bernard Looney quitting the Rosneft board too. Our correspondent Katie Prescott told us more. Moving on from energy, we look at how during an emergency parliamentary session on Ukraine on Sunday, Chancellor Scholz announced an additional $113bn for the German army. He also announced pivots on energy policy, and laws about the export of German made arms - in what he called a turning point brought about by the war in Ukraine. Dr Liana Fix is a Resident Fellow at the German Marshall Fund in Washington DC and told us more about the move. Our programme ends with our correspondent, Lucy Williamson on a report from Moldova looking at the influx of Ukrainian refugee's into the country. On this episode of the Unhashed Podcast, the gang's all back together, covering influencer tweets and price movements, was Miami a super-spreader event, Mara pool getting their act together, Taleb aligning with BSV fraudsters, El Salvadorean volcano mining, decentralized social networks, and hot takes on hippie clothing.Elon Musk tweeted Sunday that Tesla would again accept Bitcoin payments for Teslas if miners could demonstrate that 50% of their energy sources came from renewables. The next day, Billionaire hedge fund manager Paul Tudor Jones made a bullish comment regarding bitcoin on CNBC's 'œSquawk Box: 'œI like bitcoin as a portfolio diversifier. Everybody asks me 'œwhat should I do with my bitcoin?' The only thing I know for certain, I want 5% in gold, 5% in bitcoin, 5% in cash, 5% in commodities,'. The cryptocurrency began its latest surge on Sunday after Tesla CEO Elon Musk said the electric vehicle maker could accept bitcoin transactions again in the future. Bitcoin pumped to $39,000 following Musk's comments and was pushed over the edge to above $40k following Tudor's.Was Bitcoin2021 a 'œsuper spreader' event? If you follow CNBC then yes...maybe. However there appears to be very little evidence beyond the anecdotal for this. Eric Wall appears to have been beset by one of the more serious cases, tweeting (and then deleting) Thursday that he had 'œJust tested positive for COVID' and sharing a photo of himself in an ambulance or hospital attached to medical equipment. We wish Eric the best. The Miami Mayors office responded to claims of the conference being a super spreader event: 'œWe have no reason to believe the conference was a '˜Super Spreader.' At this point, with the information we know, this characterization of the event is not only unfair but also irresponsible,'. Bitcoin Magazine also responded that all attendees were provided with 'œthe current recommendations of the CDC and State of Florida,' and they had expressed to the audience that 'œthose who were high risk or hadn't been vaccinated should consider waiting until next year.' It should also be noted that any US citizen has had access to vaccines for almost a month now, meaning that any risks taken put only the individual who took them at risk.VOLCANO POWERED BITCOIN is the latest meme on Bitcoin Twitter following Salvadorian president Nayib Bukele's announcement that they would be using Geo-thermal energy produced from a volcano to mine Bitcoin: 'œOur engineers just informed me that they dug a new well, that will provide approximately 95MW of 100% clean, 0 emissions geothermal energy from our volcanoes. Starting to design a full #Bitcoin mining hub around it. What you see coming out of the well is pure water vapor'. Attached to the tweet was a video of a well spewing water into the air at incredible pressure. These comments follow a much larger announcement at Bitcoin2021 by Jack Mallers that El Salvador would pass a law that would recognize Bitcoin as Legal Tender and perhaps even keep Bitcoin as a reserve on the government's books. The move is not without its criticism, primarily coming from those who have rightly pointed out Bukele's historical strong man tactics in government and borderline authoritarian control over it. Perhaps most strangely of all the people who praised the move is none other than Bitcoin critic Frances Coppola, who tweeted 'œMy unpopular opinion (well, perhaps popular in some circles): the President of El Salvador's decision to adopt BTC as an alternative to the USD for transactions in his country is actually quite sensible.' Following news that the law had actually been passed was further proclamation from leaders in Brazil, Paraguay, Mexico, Argentina and other Central and South American countries that they would be considering similar laws in order to 'œde-dollarize' their economies.Mara Pool, the bitcoin mining pool operated by digital asset technology company Marathon Digital Holdings, will update its miners to the latest Bitcoin Core 0.21.1 software (signalling Taproot activation), and stop censoring transactions, according to a press release. ""Marathon is committed to the core tenets of the Bitcoin community, including decentralization, inclusion, and no censorship,"" said Marathon's CEO Fred Thiel. ""Over the coming week, we will be updating all our miners to the full standard Bitcoin core 0.21.1 node, including support for Taproot. By adopting the full standard Bitcoin core node, we will be validating transactions on the blockchain in the exact same way as all other miners who use the standard node."" The announcement comes in great contrast to Marathon's actions in the past few months. In late March, the company announced its bitcoin mining pool would filter transactions to mine blocks compliant with U.S. regulations, including anti-money laundering (AML) and Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) standards, effectively censoring transactions. And earlier this month, the company successfully mined its first 'œcompliant' block. '" https://bitcoinmagazine.com/business/marathon-to-stop-censoring-bitcoin-blocksTaproot has locked in! In the early hours of Saturday morning, the threshold of 90% blocks signalling taproot support was reached for this difficulty epoch, which means that as of block 709632 (expected in November this year), taproot's rules will be enforced on the network. Taproot is the first update to the bitcoin protocol in 4 years, since SegWit was deployed despite much contention back in 2017. This also validates the newly tested activation mechanism 'œspeedy trial', which has defused some tensions that were building over which mechanism to use to deploy taproot.Everyone's favorite publication, Coingeek, held a BSV conference in Zurich last week, and joining as speakers were notable Bitcoin critics Nassim Taleb and Nouriel Roubini. Our condolences to everyone involved. On June 11, Jack Dorsey cast doubt on the future of Twitter, tweeting that 'œit is only a matter of time' to integrate the Lightning Network into the social network he runs. It is unclear if it would be implemented on Twitter on BlueSky, the project he is currently working on to decentralize social media

Lex discusses his recent piece How DeFi Can Avoid the Irrelevance of P2P Lending and Crowdfunding, where he compares DeFi to once-hot financial ideas, like equity crowdfunding. He explores how DeFi can avoid the fate of those trends. Our focus for this episode of the Rational Reminder is split into two sections; first, we cycle through our regular features, looking at a number of studies and articles of interest, the market during the pandemic, and our bad advice segment, and then Benjamin is joined by Tim Nash to talk about ethical investing and comment on Wealthsimple's new sustainable portfolio. We start off our weekly round-up talking about the idea of broadening a knowledge-base and how reading widely and diversely on all manner of subjects can influence and benefit your investing. From there, we turn to the topic of quantitive easing before exploring Tim Wu's thesis about information empires and how they cyclically influence economics. We then dive into the Ontario Securities Commission Investor Experience Study and Lubos Pastor's paper, 'Mutual Fund Performance and Flows During the COVID-19 Crisis'. Both of these shed light on investor behaviour and market performance during 2020 and also offer some interesting findings on the strength of some active management. Daniel Crosby has laid out what he calls '22 Behavioral Nudges to Optimize Client Outcomes', which we then run through, touching on each of his ideas and commenting where necessary. Our bad advice of the week comes from TikTok, and we listen in on two, worryingly misleading clips from TikTok personalities — the social platform may not be the best place to find sound financial advice! For the last part of the show we hear from Tim Nash; he shares his thoughts on Ken French's appearance on the show recently and what the pandemic has proven about sustainable funds going forward. This week, we have a guest on the show - economics and finance writer Frances Coppola. She's the author of a book, "Quantiative Easing for the People", which argues that central banks and governments should work in concert to ensure that their response to financial crises really helps the entire economy, rather than just inflating asset prices.   In the second part of our interview, we go into much more depth about the specific idea of quantiative easing for the people - essentially, what would happen if the central banks or government directly gave every individual in the country a few thousand pounds, rather than injecting this stimulus into the market indirectly by buying up assets. We also discuss specifically what the ideal response to the coronavirus crisis should be and the role that banks and governments have to play in our response.

What is quantiative easing, and what was it intended to do? It was a really fascinating discussion and it does amaze me how much economics is almost taken for granted + not explained as par for the course in our education when these ideas and principles have the potential to affect our lives so much. I hope you enjoy.

1 August 2016 - It is always glorious when we can have the well-known banking expert, economics wonk and blogger, Frances Coppola on the show. We were thrilled to welcome her back this week to talk about threats to the independence of central banks. We also discussed her recent panel at the Financial Times Festival of Finance where she consistently pointed out that the rise in populism expressed both through the Brexit vote and in the Trump candidacy, is all about the local. Will and I had a lot of fun at the top of the show where he reveled in the number of GOP pundits who had to admit they loved the Democratic National Convention and I revealed what is, perhaps, the single most important polling result of this election cycle. Will then goes on to tear into what we know (and what we don't) about the relationships between Donald Trump, members of his campaign staff, Julian Assange, Vladimir Putin and various Russian surrogates and agencies. The word "traitor" does indeed come to mind. Seriously. I spend my time on an overview of the economy of India, the modernization efforts and challenges and a bit about the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) including its recent upheaval. Since the soon-to-be former Governor of the RBI may very well be the incoming head of the IMF, after Lagarde steps down later this year, it's worth getting to know a bit more about him. Rughuram Rajan is a neoliberal economist but he is also extremely accomplished, qualified and would be a much stronger voice for developing nations. In spite of Trump, this has been a great week to be a Democrat and Will and I are still in the post-convention glow. In the next 100 days this country may well rise or fall. Let's get to work. 14 March 2016 - I follow many media sources on economics but none more closely than I do Frances Coppola. Frances' insight on banking fraud, regulation and on the Greek crisis has contributed significantly to my thinking on these subjects. Having her on the show to talk about Brexit is especially exciting for me and I know you will be bowled over by her as well. Her blog, Coppola Comment and other writings, at The Guardian, the Financial Times, The Economist, Forbes and her appearances on the BBC provide an accessible clarity rare among financial industry wonks. Will is breaking news today on the Agent Orange crisis on the San Carlos Apache reservation lands in Arizona. The Environmental Protection Agency is apparently stepping up to finally (thirty years after the fact) mitigate extreme adverse impact. At the top of the show Will talks about working to focus on the big issues, the real issues in the campaign and not getting lost in the weeds of a single comment. I finish my financial instrument backgrounders by talking about mortgage-backed securities and collateralized debt obligations. Whew! I also update on the Finnish economy which, sadly, is not being held aloft by Angry Birds. Is the Finnish economy "Finnished?" Once again, our interstitial music is by the wonderful Irish American band, Bua. Buy their album. You won't be sorry. - Carrots! Arliss
