If you're disturbed or simply turned off by America's rigid political divisions this is the show for you. We discuss creative skills and practices that put a little hope back in your political lifeDoug Teschner and Beth Malow are co-authors of the forthcoming book "Beyond the Politics of Contempt: Practical Steps to Build Positive Relationships in Divided Times." Their work builds on what they've both learned as bridge builders and Braver Angels volunteers. They also write about their work on Substack.Imagine a country where people of opposing political beliefs and different social, geographical and educational backgrounds get along pretty well, and manage to make progress together on vital issues that they care about. Our two guests show how it can be done."We've always had debate and disagreement," Doug tells us. "The concern now is that this has become personalized. If you don't agree with me that means you're evil." People should disagree, but when it's about "us versus them, this is really dangerous for our country."Most Americans want to get along, says Beth. "I just think there are forces out there tearing us apart because that's what they see their profit and power in... We need to stand up and say enough is enough. We're better than this."Beth Malow leans blue. Doug Teschner leans red. He is a former Republican State Legislator in New Hampshire. Doug served as a Peace Corps country director in Ukraine and West Africa. He volunteers for Braver Angels as New England political leader. Beth Malow is a neurology physician, science and health communicator and lives in Vermont. She is also a trained volunteer moderator and debate chair for Braver Angels. This is our latest episode on the people, projects, and ideas of Braver Angels: The volunteer-led nationwide citizens' group that's working to bring people together across rigid and often antagonistic divides. During our interview Beth mentioned a May 20th Braver Angels New Hampshire debate that she's involved with. Our podcast host, Richard Davies, is a media trainer who works with clients to strengthen their public speaking, messaging, and interview skills. Ten years ago this month we launched our first show at a time of new beginnings for podcasts. We were early to this game, and well before podcasting became part of mainstream media. In contrast to other shows about politics and current affairs we ran against the grain, avoiding snarky slogans and angry attacks. How Do We Fix It? focused instead on solutions journalism and what might be improved if we listen carefully to others who we don't agree with. We urge listeners to get out of their comfort zone.Right from the start, co-hosts Jim Meigs (leans red) and Richard Davies (leans blue) embraced nuance and celebrated the ideas of contrarians and compromisers alike. Their weekly podcast partnership lasted nine years. Together in this episode Richard and Jim consider a range of ideas that we have discussed. Our podcast was well ahead of many others in its stout defense of free speech for all sides and firm support of enlightenment ideals. We also share examples here of how we broke ground with episodes on the impact of smartphones on children and college students, the spread of COVID, and the need for carbon-free nuclear power to be part of the response to climate change. In this episode we include extracts from our rich catalog of episodes that date back to 2015. All of our shows can be found at howdowefixit.me.Recommendations: Jim and Richard are both avid podcast listeners. Two of their favorites are "Breaking History" and "Strangers on a Bench". Eli Lake interviews historians, academics and reporters for Breaking History, "mining the past of human experience to figure out the present. " British singer-songwriter Tom Rosenthal hosts Strangers on a Bench. He meets people for the first time while sitting on a park bench, usually somewhere in London.. How Do We Fix It? is a proud member of the Democracy Group podcast network. We recorded this episode at The Manhattan Institute in New York. Thanks for their help and support. Hosted on Acast. We release this show at a moment of high political drama. Economics, financial markets, and America's relations with the rest of the world are in a state of tumult. So how on earth do we talk with and listen to people on the other side? Should you even try? Jessie Mannisto, Director of Debates at Braver Angels says “yes!” In this episode we learn why understanding those who you disagree with is a vital first step to repairing civic relations. We discuss the First 100 Days Debates: “Is President Trump Making America Great?” Braver Angels is holding a series of structured debates this spring on birthright citizenship, DEI, foreign policy, the limits of executive power and more.Everyone has an opinion about the President and his Administration. “Right now we are all in some way emotionally activated, whether with triumph or with fear and anger,” Jess tells How Do We Fix It? host Richard Davies. “At Braver Angels we are coming together to try to live well in a polarized time.”This episode is our latest report on the people, projects, and ideas of America's largest cross-partisan group that's boosting civic friendship. Bringing Americans together to bridge the partisan divide and strengthen our democratic republic is vital work. At a time of so much anger and misunderstanding the repair of our national conversation may be the biggest challenge the nation faces. Subscribe to our podcast. Like us at your favorite podcast platform. Head to Braver Angels to learn more about the work they're doing.Jessie Mannisto came to Braver Angels as a volunteer after being "cancelled" by friends for disagreeing with some of their political views—an experience that led her to seek a space where she could, in the words of the Braver Angels Way, "speak freely and fully without fear." Now she works to cultivate such a space for others, regardless of their beliefs. She also trains Braver Angels members to chair their own debates; one major part of this is mastering our own responses to fear and anger so that we can support others in doing the same, learning from those emotions what they are trying to tell us and using this information constructively. Before joining Braver Angels, Jessie served as a leadership analyst at the Central Intelligence Agency focusing on Eastern Europe. She is also the founder and editor emerita of Third Factor, a magazine and membership community for creative and intellectually excitable people striving to develop and live by their values. She is a native of Detroit, Michigan. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Allica Bank has been Britain's fastest-growing company over the last few years according to a collection of different reports that track this. This growth has been driven by Richard Davies, the chief executive, who arrived at Allica in 2020 from Revolut to what was effectively a blank sheet of paper - the bank had a licence and funding, but its founder had departed and it made only £5m of loans. Since then Allica has been transformed into a thriving digital bank for small and medium-sized businesses. At the heart of this transformation has been an approach inspired by what Davies has learned from his varied career and a book, The Geek Way, that provides a playbook for modern businesses...In this episode of the Business Leader Podcast, Graham Ruddick speaks to Richard Davies about the story behind Allica, why small and medium-sized businesses need a better bank and the outlook for the UK economy. The holiday season is here, but many people across the country may dread sitting down with their nearest and dearest— all because of politics. In this episode we share down-to-earth advice from two wise experts who have thought deeply and creatively about how to minimize conflict and maximize cooperation with parents, family, and friends.Tania Israel is a Professor of Counseling Psychology at the University of California, Santa Barbara and award-winning author of "Beyond Your Bubble: How to Navigate the Challenges of Living in a Divided Nation".Arthur C. Brooks is Professor of the Practice of Public and NonProfit Leadership at the Harvard Kennedy School. We discuss the findings of his book "Love Your Enemies: How Decent People Can Save America From the Culture of Contempt".We make podcasts about the work, ideas, and projects of Braver Angels, the volunteer-led, cross-partisan network of American citizens who are working together across divides to push back against toxic polarization. This episode is very much in the spirit of what Braver Angels are working to achieve. This show is released just weeks after the election of Donald Trump to serve a second term as President. Divisive rhetoric by both sides during the campaign added to recent bitterness and division. Polarization is "not only hurting our connections with other people, it's hurting our health and our democracy," says Tania Israel. She argues that Americans "need to strengthen our connections with other people and tolerate, even embrace differences". A longer version of the interview with Tania was first published by the podcast, "Let's Find Common Ground".In the second half of this podcast we hear about the radical ancient teachings of Jesus, Buddah and many religious leaders— love your enemies." This is a "subversive, sort of crazy-sounding idea", Arthur Brooks tells us. But it can have a profound impact on how we live. "It's pretty easy to love your friends, but to love your enemies is something entirely different," he says. "You see them in an entirely different way. You change your own heart."Our "How Do We Fix It?" interview with Arthur Brooks was first recorded in 2018. Richard Davies and his co-host Jim Meigs asked the questions. Hosted on Acast. In the last episode Jim Meigs and Richard Davies celebrated more than nine years as co-hosts. They also announced that their podcasting partnership was ending. But "How Do We Fix It?" is not going away. Instead we plan to focus on something we've covered a great deal recently, and is of urgent importance right now: The broken nature of American politics. In the weeks to come, Richard will be the solo host of the show. We'll feature a series of creative, constructive conversations with bridge builder— people who are working to reduce polarization and push back against partisan divides. We'll shine a spotlight on the largest group in the field: Braver Angels. There are many stories we're excited to share with you here on How Do We Fix It? Watch this space. Hosted on Acast. We recently appeared on "How Do We Fix It?", a wonderful podcast in search of constructive and practical ideas to address the many problems that plague our age. We had a fantastic time talking to the hosts Richard Davies and Jim Meigs about free speech, academic freedom and campus politics. We discussed DEI, Inc.—what the term means and why we think it's useful. And we argued that an ascendant discourse of harm is at the heart of today's threats to campus free expression, from the chilling effects of many DEI initiatives to the even chillier effects of anti-CRT legislation like Florida's Stop WOKE Act. Thank you to Richard and Jim for giving us their permission to post our discussion on Banished. This is a public episode. We continue our Best of 2023 episodes with an episode from the How Do We Fix It? podcast, hosted by Richard Davies and Jim Meigs. Toxic polarization is "the problem that eats all other problems... It's the sludge at the base of everything else," our guest Mónica Guzmán tells us. In this really useful repeat episode from 2022, we learn how to fight back against the confusion and heartbreak of living with rigid divides. This show is a curtain raiser for a series we are doing this fall with funding from Solutions Journalism Network. We will be examining threats to our society from polarization and recent efforts to build a national movement to bridge divides.Monica is a bridge builder and author of the highly-praised book "I Never Thought Of It That Way: How to Have Fearlessly Curious Conversations in Dangerously Divided Times". She serves as a Senior Fellow for Public Practice at the national depolarization organization, Braver Angels. This interview contains surprises. One of them, says Monica, is that "the anger and the rage that we see out there that defines our division doesn't actually exist that much on the one-to-one level,"She argues that the best tool we can use to have successful conversations with those we disagree with is our own curiosity. We also learn about Monica's personal story as the loving liberal daughter of Mexican immigrants who strongly supported Donald Trump. We hear how Mónica discovered ways to overcome divisions that hurt our relationships and society. In this episode, Monica discusses how we can put our natural sense of wonder to work, finding the answers needed to work with people, rather than score points against them. Bridging the gap involves asking questions that help you get across the difficult divides that are causing so much pain in our families and communities. We also learn about the work and practice of Braver Angels and its current campaign, "Rise For America."Additional InformationHow Do We Fix It? Affective polarization in America – the gap between voters' positive feelings about their own political party or "side" and negative feelings toward the opposing party – has sharply increased during the past two decades. We speak with two leaders in local government and a nationwide students group about effective ways to bridge divides. Erica Manuel is CEO and Executive Director at the Institute for Local Government in Roseville, California. She has over 20 years of experience helping public, private and nonprofit organizations implement innovative policies to provide strong leadership, advance climate resilience, support economic development, engage communities, and drive positive change.Manu Meel is CEO of BridgeUSA, a student-led nonprofit organization that creates spaces at colleges and high schools for open discussion among students about political issues. BridgeUSA began in 2016 at the universities of Notre Dame, CU-Boulder and UC Berkeley in response to growing polarization on campus. Erica and Manu were interviewed by our co-host Richard Davies at the 2023 Braver Angels Convention in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Both of them played leading roles at the cross-partisan gathering of Democrats, Republicans and independent citizens. Braver Angels is part of the growing movement of bridging organizations, who are finding new ways to push back against rigid and dehumanizing political divides. Many young people on college campuses are "just scared to say what's on their minds, and walking on eggshells," Manu tells us. He blames "the loudest voices" for silencing open discussion. "This is not a problem of the majority," he says. "It is a problem of the loudest voices imposing their closed-mindedness on an exhausted majority."Both Erica and Manu insist they're hopeful that the crisis of polarization can be successfully overcome. "I'm hopeful because not a single person I've talked to has said why on earth would you do that? Why on earth would you talk to someone on the other side? Why on earth would you want to treat someone like a human being with dignity?" Erica tells Richard.Recommendation: Jim recommends Commentary Magazine, a monthly publication of conservative "non-Trumpy" opinion. This week we're bringing you a very special rewind show from the Fintech Insider archives. Hosted by Benjamin Ensor and joined by some very special guests from Allica bank, Anthemis and This Week in Fintech, the show asked the question: How should we measure success in fintech?' In a period where valuations are tumbling, we're seeing fintechs either get bought out entirely or sadly have to shutter their doors, we're examining whether valuation and customer numbers are the best measure of success for fintech. Should we be paying more attention to profitability or the problems they are solving for their home markets? Or are there even success metrics we haven't thought of at all? This is as highly relevant a discussion now as it was almost a year ago when we first had it, perhaps even more so. This week's guests include: Katie Palenscar, Managing Director & Global Head of Venture Studio, Anthemis Nik Milanović, Editor, This Week In Fintech Richard Davies, CEO, Allica Bank Come and see the show LIVE at our Fintech Insider: After Dark event on 20th September in London's Village Underground. News broke yesterday that veteran Newstalk ZB broadcaster Mike Hosking will be New Zealand's sole media representative inside Westminster Abbey for the coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla this weekend. Now, Kate Hawkesby has teased what her husband will be wearing to the once-in-a-lifetime occasion. Taking to Instagram, the Newstalk ZB Early Edition host shared a series of images including the “inspo” for Hosking's royal attire which appeared to be a gold embellished Dolce and Gabbana suit. The choice doesn't seem too farfetched for Hosking who is no stranger to fun features on his clothes, however, Hawkesby quickly posted the photo again with a large “just jokes” plastered over the sketch. Kate Hawkesby had a bit of fun with her followers when sharing the journey to find Mike Hosking's coronation suit. Photo / Instagram Still on the hunt for the perfect suit, the following images posted to her social media story included a stop at Dolce and Gabbana and Ralph Lauren, before she shared with fans that they were dead ends because Hosking had his heart set on something else. Saville Row. The iconic British suitmakers have long been known for traditional bespoke tailoring for men and fittingly – no pun intended – has been the location men of royal descent have been dressed for centuries. Built between 1731 and 1735, the development was home to the creator of the dinner jacket, Henry Poole in 1846 and later Henry Huntsman of H. Huntsman & Sons. Saville Row has seen many historic and royal names come through their doors including Winston Churchill, Napoleon III and the man of the moment, King Charles. The pull is their “bespoke” tailoring – a term meaning each suit is hand-made to perfectly fit the individual. Sharing an image from inside an elite Saville Row suit makers, Hawkesby teased Hosking getting fitted for his coronation outfit, telling fans it's been “extremely last minute and stressful”. Covering up the look she wrote, “All will be revealed once it's been tailored and finished tomorrow”, however, the couple appear to have changed their mind about sharing the suit with the world before King Charles' coronation on May 6. The couple are yet to share Mike Hosking's coronation suit. Photo / Instagram This morning the ZB host posted photos from the final suit fitting including a snap of Hosking walking out of what appears to be a fitting room. Looking dapper, he donned a crisp white shirt, black pants and a jacket – which may or may not include tails. She then shared a close-up image but covered the suit with a green squiggle and wrote “Full reveal on Coronation day!”. Based on the sneak peek Hawkesby posted, Hosking's look keeps in line with the rumoured guidelines mentioned in the coronation invitation. The Herald reported last week that the Palace has requested male coronation attendees wear either a morning suit or business suit and for women, a “day dress” - a dress or suit intended to be worn during the day. It's a rather different request from that made when his mother, Queen Elizabeth, was crowned 70 years ago as the Palace then asked attendees to dress in formal regalia. While the ZB powerhouse couple is yet to share a full image of Hosking's royal outfit, Hawkesby did share one thing. His shoes. In a series of images she told fans that by a twist of fate, her husband will be wearing the exact same shoe as the King himself. Showing a close-up of the shoe, she said she spotted them at a “bespoke shoemaker” shop and couldn't help but look at them in awe. “Salesman explains these are the shoes the King is wearing to the coronation,” she wrote on a picture of Hosking holding up the shoes, “This is a sample they made of them but there's only one and only in one size.” “Mike (Cinderella)” she cheekily quipped, “asks what size are they? Salesman says let's try them on and see if they fit you …” Mike Hosking will wear the same shoes as King Charles thanks to a Cinderella moment. Photo / Instagram In the next Instagram story, Hawkesby posted a photo of Hosking wearing the shoe, “and guess what? They fit like a glove ...” She went on to say the salesman agreed to sell them to the couple, meaning Hosking will be wearing the exact same shoes to the coronation as King Charles – minus a gold royal buckle that is being added to Charles' pair as per coronation custom. Hosking will join a select few Kiwis inside Westminster Abbey to celebrate the King's coronation including Prime Minister Chris Hipkins, former All Black captain Richie McCaw and Governor-General Dame Cindy Kiro. Spy reported last week that McCaw has chosen a morning suit from the menswear store Sergios in Christchurch. Kiro will reportedly wear a day dress and a korowai, while her husband Dr Richard Davies intends to wear a morning coat, her office says. - Lillie Rohan, NZHSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

2022 was a year of surprises in politics and the world beyond. In our year-end special, "Let's Find Common Ground" podcast puts the spotlight on six interviews that we published during the past twelve months. We hear former Congressman Will Hurd discuss moderation and extremes in American politics. Author and market researcher Diane Hessan tells us what pollsters often overlook when they speak with voters. Former gun industry executive Ryan Busse reveals the key differences between responsible gun ownership and the reckless use of firearms. Co-hosts Richard Davies and Ashley-Milne Tyte also feature their conversation with a prison reformer and a corrections industry executive. Two members of Congress— one Republican, one Democrat— explain their efforts to improve how Congress works. And a leading newspaper editor and reporter discuss how they face up honestly and creatively to bias and misinformation in the news media. Learn more at commongroundcommittee.org/podcasts

The public's trust in government is near an all-time low. Now some politicians are recognizing that polarization and division in the United States is a threat to how our democracy functions. In this episode, we hear from two members of Congress: One Republican, one Democrat. Representatives Derek Kilmer and William Timmons both work together on the Select Committee on the Modernization of Congress and are leading supporters of the Building Civic Bridges Act — a proposal that would fund federal and local efforts to reduce polarization. We also discuss how bipartisan support for robust measures in response to the invasion of Ukraine may strengthen efforts to improve ties between Members of Congress of both parties. This effort comes at a critical time. Recent polling has found that about four-out-of-five Americans are very or extremely concerned about America's political divisions. "Let's Find Common Ground", produced for Common Ground Committee, is co-hosted by Richard Davies and Ashley Milne-Tyte.
On today's show, we're joined by Richard Davies. When you hear his voice, you may say “sounds familiar. He gave multiple examples of the latter as related to views on policing and the origins of COVID-19.He also gave practical advice for thoughtful speaking and for interviewing and saluted a reporter who he felt was doing great work.Thank you as always for listening. You can find “How Do We Fix It?” here and wherever you get your podcasts.
Richard Davies is an entrepreneur and artist. He is known for Abandon Ship Apparel company and Abandon Ship bars. It was fantastic to be back recording in real life in a studio which allowed for the intimacy this podcast deserved. Abandon Ship Apparel was founded in 2011 in a bedroom in Glasgow with £300, a web domain and a passion for making art. Within 3 years, Abandon Ship Apparel saw itself in high street windows grossing over £1.2 million in annual sales revenue through channels such as ASOS, Topman and Foot Asylum. In 2015, Abandon Ship Apparel entered liquidation and Richard used his own money to buy back the rights to the brand he had spent almost 5 years growing from the ground up to rebuild. Fast forward 6 years, Richard, and a team he is proud of, have expanded the apparel brand beyond t-shirts. He has opened the Abandon Ship bars in Dundee and Glasgow which have become WILDLY popular especially for it's unmissable facade and insane artwork (I have visited weekly!). Abandon Ship in Covent Garden, London is opening in a month's time as part of the plan to expand the bar across 10 locations in the UK. Richard speaks candidly about: - His upbringing and his rebellion against traditional education - A life changing moment that changed his mental model and direction - The highlights and lowlights of owning a rapidly growing apparel brand - Stories from travelling to tradeshows across the world (including closing a £10,000+ of apparel deal after partying all night) - The long-lasting effects of liquidation on the psyche of an entrepreneur - The inspiration and methodology behind the renowned Abandon Ship Bar ceiling artwork - His definition of healthy and toxic masculinity - His reflection on his first 35 years on earth that he defines as “his training years” Thanks, Rich, for stopping by and looking forward to round 2!
To understand how humans react and adapt to economic change, we need to study how these people who live in harsh environments survived these conditions. From war zones to natural disasters and failed states, to aging societies and those who are challenged by technological advancement. In his book, Extreme Economies, economist, and journalist Richard Davies features stories of communities that experienced seismic shock or have been violently changed in some way. In this episode, he gives an account of how people living in these odd and marginal places are often ignored by number crunching economists and politicians alike. His timely and revealing insights shed light on how markets recover from catastrophic events. Listen as Greg and Richard talk about humans living in extreme situations, and of the financial infrastructure they create.Episode Quotes:What motivated you to study the places featured in your book Extreme Economies?I started out at university, actually as a medical student, and I switched to philosophy and economics after a year of that. And one of the interesting things from the sciences is that there are these landmark cases. One that I mentioned is this English physician, William Patti, and his discovery of human circulation. One that will be more famous, I think, to listen to in the States —is the case of a patient called Phineas Gage, who was a Canadian railway man, who was shot through the head —this gruesome injury which separated his brain. And the point is that these one offs, this case allowed medics because the person survived. Because the person was resilient to find out something really important about how human anatomy works —the general human anatomy for the rest of us.The first idea of looking at extremes I had been that one which is, ‘Can I find places where something radical has happened and yet, their economies survived?'Is entrepreneurship a natural human tendency? There is something innately human about entrepreneurialism. I'm convinced of that now. And why is that? Because if you take people, and you strip them of everything, so they're left with just the basic assets that they have— their time, some skills, some kind of natural source, they will start to trade. In what ways do the reconstruction of tenements in Glasgow provide insight into the social capital, which is not represented in public housing data? There are hundreds of stories across Glasgow that become more or less popular in the social sciences. But I think we would call it social capital— the norms, traditions, non-market based ways of interacting and providing for one another. When the tenements were destroyed, they built these high-rise buildings with external developments. But they didn't build a single shop, pub or communal area because they just didn't think of that. And again, that's my point about data. You need to look at all the data. They just looked at the other housing. Is the house bigger? Yes. Is it better? Is it cleaner? Yes. But they didn't look at all the other things that make a neighborhood. And that's one of the reasons, I think, talking to people, those places did so badly and made Glasgow sink from one of the best cities to the most troubled city in Europe by the mid-1960s to early '70s.Time Code Guide:00:06:04 Places with Extreme Economies00:07:21 Entrepreneurship created from necessity00:16:52 Beyond physical needs00:17:41 The urban decline of Glasgow00:21:07 Thriving economy through social capital00:24:19 Social capital's non-mainstream definition00:26:35 Ineffective government intervention00:28:01 The Network of Trust00:31:48 Building back disrupted markets00:38:56 The economic malfunction in Kinshasa00:43:52 Informal privatization of a collapsing civil service00:50:55 Inequality in Santiago01:11:11 The Economic ObservatoryShow Links:Guest ProfileRichard Davies at University of BristolRichard Davies on TwitterRichard Davies WebsiteAcademic Profile at the London School of EconomicsHis WorksArticles on Economic ObservatoryArticles, blogs, and videos at Chartwell SpeakersExtreme Economies: What Life at the World's Margins Can Teach Us About Our Own Future
