The Week in Westminster

Sonia Sodha delves in to the latest developments at Westminster.Sir Keir Starmer celebrated not one, but two, new trade deals this week: with the United States and India. But has Britain got good deals? The Labour chair of the Business and Trade Select Committee, Liam Byrne, and former Conservative trade minister and UK trade envoy to the US, Sir Conor Burns, discuss the merits of the agreements.Following the local election results, in which Reform UK made strong gains at the expense of the main parties, restive Labour MPs have been making their feelings known to the Prime Minister about the government's performance. One of those MPs, Jo White, chair of the Red Wall Group, joined Joe Dromey, General Secretary of the Fabians, to discuss whether Labour needs a change of direction.A spate of recent cyber attacks on retailers including M&S and Co-op have caused alarm in business circles and in government. Cabinet Office minister Pat McFadden this week said the attacks were a "wake-up call" for business. To discuss that Sonia speaks to Ciaran Martin, former chief executive of the National Cyber Security Centre and now a professor at Oxford University. And, to reflect on the 80th anniversary of VE Day, Sonia is joined by Lord Michael Heseltine, former Deputy Prime Minister, who witnessed the celebrations in 1945, and Alex Baker, the first Labour MP to represent Aldershot - the home of the British Army.

Former start-up founder Liam Byrne's career is a study in the fusion of public service values and business acumen. In a wide-ranging conversation with Jamie, Byrne reflects on how his upbringing, education, and professional journey - from a tough Essex school to the heart of government - shaped his political philosophy and fuels his urgent call for a more radical approach to Britain's biggest challenges.

The Week in Westminster

George Parker of the Financial Times assesses the latest developments at Westminster. To discuss the Chancellor's trip to Washington to try to secure a trade deal with the US, George is joined by Labour MP and Chair of the Business and Trade Committee, Liam Byrne, and former Conservative government Trade Minister, Greg Hands. Also this week, London hosted the global energy security conference. To discuss the green energy transition, George is joined by Green Party MP Ellie Chowns and Gary Smith, the General Secretary of the GMB union.Liberal Democrat MP Christine Jardine and Conservative MP Dr Caroline Johnson join George to discuss the recent Supreme Court ruling that a woman is defined by biological sex. And, in the week of St George's Day, the Prime Minister hosted the first ever Downing Street reception to mark the occasion. To discuss the meaning of 'patriotism', George speaks to Tom Baldwin, a former Labour adviser and the author of a biography of Keir Starmer and Samuel Kasumu, who worked as an adviser to former Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

After the Irish fought for and won their independence from the British in 1921, they had a problem. Centuries of exploitation had left the island one of the least forested nations in Europe, with less than 2% tree cover. So, they started planting a non-native American tree: fast-growing Sitka spruce capable of rebuilding their timber resources in record time. And it worked. Today, about 17% of the island is forested. But in the rural areas where iconic rolling hills have been replaced by rows and rows of conifers, farmers are not happy. Outside/In host Nate Hegyi takes us to County Leitrim, an area of Ireland hit hard by the Troubles and the Great Famine, to meet the townspeople who are fighting what they say is a new wave of colonialism: Sitka spruce plantations. Produced by Nate Hegyi. The Week in Westminster

Caroline Wheeler, political editor of The Sunday Times, assesses the latest developments at Westminster. To discuss whether there should be a national inquiry into grooming gangs, Caroline is joined by Labour MP Paul Waugh who represents Rochdale, and former Conservative MP Laura Farris, who served as Safeguarding Minister in Rishi Sunak's government. Following the announcement of the government's plans to reducing waiting lists in England, Caroline speaks to surgeon and former Labour Health Minister Ara Darzi who now sits in the House of Lords as an independent peer. He is the author of the recent government review into the NHS in England. As the Chancellor Rachel Reeves visits China, Caroline brings together the chair of the business and trade select committee, Liam Byrne, and Conservative MP, Tom Tugendhat, who is a former Security Minister. And, finally, the beginning of the Westminster week was dominated by political interventions made by the owner of the social media platform X. To discuss how the Prime Minister should handle such interventions, Caroline brought together Katie Perrior, former Downing Street Director of Communications for Theresa May and David Yelland, a former newspaper editor who is co-presenter of Radio 4's ‘When It Hits the Fan'.

Despite the arrest of Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada, a key leader of the Sinaloa Cartel, the drug trafficking operations are expected to continue with minimal disruption. Zambada had been preparing for a potential exit by gradually delegating responsibilities to his sons and other trusted members of the cartel, ensuring a seamless transition in leadership. The Sinaloa Cartel remains a robust and diversified organization, with multiple factions like Los Chapitos and Los Mayitos operating independently in different regions. These factions control critical drug trafficking routes and maintain established networks with suppliers and distributors. The cartel's operational resilience is also supported by its ability to adapt to leadership changes without significant loss of control over its territories and drug routes. Experts believe that while there may be some internal power struggles or adjustments, these are unlikely to disrupt the overall flow of drugs into the United States. The cartel's established networks, alliances with other criminal groups, and ongoing control of key territories will continue to facilitate the northward movement of drugs. Furthermore, the cartel has a history of strategic adaptations in response to law enforcement actions, suggesting that the arrest of El Mayo is just another event in its long history of overcoming challengesSegment 2:The Mexican government has been underreporting the violence occurring in the border state of Tamaulipas, particularly in cities like Matamoros. This underreporting has raised concerns both within Mexico and in the United States. Despite frequent shootings, street blockades, and reports of extortion and kidnappings by cartels, official crime statistics often do not reflect the full extent of the violence. This discrepancy is partly due to political reasons, such as maintaining a positive public image and avoiding economic repercussions like decreased tourism and foreign investment.Local residents and business owners in Tamaulipas have expressed frustration over the government's failure to accurately report the situation, which they believe downplays the threats they face daily from organized crime. Moreover, there are reports of extrajudicial killings and disappearances, further complicating the security landscape. The lack of transparent and comprehensive reporting by the government makes it difficult to address the root causes of the violence and hampers efforts to seek justice and accountability.Segment 3:Volunteers from the group Colectivo Amor por los Desaparecidos (For the Love of the Disappeared Collective) discovered human remains in a suspected cartel "kitchen" near the Reynosa-Matamoros highway in Tamaulipas, Mexico. The group notified authorities after finding bone fragments exposed to heat, a common practice used by cartels to destroy evidence after killing their victims. These locations are often referred to as "kitchens" due to the use of fire to dispose of bodies. Two sites were identified: one near kilometer 85 of the Reynosa-Matamoros highway and another at Sierrita farm, west of Matamoros. Authorities recovered four sets of bones and 54 bone fragments from the first site, along with seven steel drums containing bone fragments at the second site. The use of fire to reduce bodies to bones is a known tactic among cartels to conceal murders. The Attorney General's Office has stated that DNA testing will be conducted on the bones to help identify the victims, but this process is expected to be lengthy and complex. This discovery underscores the ongoing violence and human rights abuses in the region, as volunteers and community groups continue to search for missing relatives amid persistent cartel violence. The findings were reported in August 2024 and highlight the efforts of local collectives in uncovering these hidden crimes and working with authorities to seek justice for the missing persons and their families.Segment 4:Liam Byrne and Thomas Kavanagh, both linked to the Kinahan cartel, are preparing for a trial in the UK on charges of attempting to acquire firearms and ammunition. Kavanagh is already serving a 21-year sentence for organizing cocaine and cannabis shipments worth €36 million, while Byrne was charged in relation to the plot after being extradited from Spain last December.  (commercial at 7:09)to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.comsource:Kinahan Cartel pair Liam Byrne and Thomas ‘Bomber' Kavanagh could launch Encrochat legal challenge - SundayWorld.com

In the pursuit of a truly egalitarian society, what can we learn from the United Kingdom's race and class wealth divides? Can politicians implement policies around wealth and taxation without being accused of attacking aspiration? And what impact does the uneven growth of wealth have on political engagement and democracy? On this episode of Democracy Sausage, inequality expert Professor Mike Savage joins Professor Mark Kenny to discuss the wealth divide and how to create a more even playing field. Thank you also to Professor Mike Savage for his book recommendations: The Inequality of Wealth: Why it matters and how to fix it by Liam Byrne and The Trading Game: A Confession by Gary Stevenson. The former chair of the Post Office, Henry Staunton, who was dismissed last month, claims he was told by a top civil servant to "hobble into the election" and delay payouts to sub-postmasters, in a newly released memo. But Business Secretary Kemi Badenoch told MPs there's "no evidence whatsoever that this is true", and called his allegations "a disgrace". The row comes as only 5% of sub-postmaster claimants have received compensation for the Horizon IT scandal so far.Late on Wednesday evening, the government published a letter from Sarah Munby, the former permanent secretary to Kemi Badenoch, responding to claims in The Times that government officials told Mr Staunton to stall on compensation payments to wronged postmasters. The letter stated: "It is not true that I made any instruction, either explicitly or implicitly, to Mr Staunton to in anyway delay compensation payments. I did not."On this edition of the Sky News Daily, Niall Paterson speaks to Labour MP and chair of the Business and Trade Committee, Liam Byrne, who says it's now his job at next Tuesday's committee to "flush out who is telling the truth".Plus, our deputy political editor Sam Coates discusses the fallout from the row. In possibly the most dramatic development in Irish gangland since the US sanctions on Daniel Kinahan, Kinahan associate Liam Byrne has been arrested by Spanish police after a trip to Mallorca. A spokesman for Spain's National Police in Majorca said: “National Police officers have arrested in Majorca a dangerous Irish fugitive who is a member of the Kinahan clan and was a priority of the UK's National Crime Agency, for leading a criminal organisation involved in weapons trafficking in the UK. “The fugitive led the weapons trafficking organiSation which bought pistols and submachine guns to then sell to other organisations." john Hand joins with Michael O'Toole as we explain why this happened, and what this means.
