The Detroit Tigers continue their winnings ways, clinching 15 of their last 21 games. Coming out of Labor Day, the Tigers are five games out of the third and final wild-card spot in the American League, looking up at the Kansas City Royals and Minnesota Twins. What will it take for the Tigers to surpass one of those teams? Regardless, does the wild-card race change anything about how the Tigers plan to approach the offseason? To get to this point, the Tigers utilized their pitching depth to win games in August despite having just two traditional starters, thanks to the strategy created by president of baseball operations Scott Harris. Manager A.J. Hinch explains the role of the bulk reliever, as well as how it helps the Tigers win games. As for one of the starters, Tarik Skubal is running away with the AL Cy Young Award, but how dominant has he been compared  to pitchers of the past? (Hint: It's one of the best seasons in nearly 60 years.) Follow Mark on X/Twitter here. Follow Evan on X/Twitter here.  Read Evan's most recent work here

Have A Seat with Jason Benetti and Dan Dickerson

Detroit rookie Wenceel Pérez sits down with Jason and Dan to discuss his journey to the Big Leagues, one that began as a 16-year-old international free agent signing in 2016. What was it like moving to a foreign country at such a young age to pursue his dream? The Dominican Republic native recounts learning to switch-hit as a kid, as well as his recent transition from shortstop to outfielder. Manager A. J. Hinch describes Pérez as “fearless.” Where does his confidence and seemingly endless trove of joy come from? Also in this episode, we learn about what it's like to face Aroldis Chapman, why triples are fun, and why we all need to try “La Bandera Dominicana.” To learn more about listener data and our privacy practices visit: https://www.audacyinc.com/privacy-policy Learn more about your ad choices. Tigers starter Matthew Boyd and reliever Will Vest were already hurt and out of the game before Ibañez hit a tiebreaking three-run homer in the third inning for a 4-1 lead. Rogers went deep with two outs in the sixth to chase Rangers starter Andrew Heaney. Six Tigers pitchers combined for 16 strikeouts, the most against Texas this season. Angels 2, White Sox 1 – Trout, Ohtani give Angels 2-1 walk-off win over White Sox Mike Trout scored on a game-ending wild pitch, Shohei Ohtani hit his 26th home run, and the Los Angeles Angels defeated the Chicago White Sox 2-1. Trout slid home head-first on the bad throw by Aaron Bummer, helping the Angels get a critical seven-game homestand off to a successful start. After having struck out in each of his first three appearances, Trout drew a leadoff walk against Reynaldo López (2-5). Bummer then came in to face Ohtani, who drew his own walk. The two Angels superstars successfully executed a double steal, which set up Trout’s heroics and the team’s second walk-off win on a wild pitch this season.  Carlos Estéves (2-1) pitched a scoreless ninth inning to get the win. Luis Robert Jr. homered for the third straight game for the White Sox. Reliever Will Vest left an inning later with right knee discomfort. Boyd left the mound with a trainer after several minutes consulting with him. Manager A.J. Hinch took the ball away from the left-hander, who at one point in the conversation pointed at his arm. Vest was clearly in discomfort after landing awkwardly on a 1-1 pitch in the second inning. Wilson cleaned up against Indiana for the third time with 24 points and 10 rebounds, plus three steals, three blocks and three assists. Gray, who had eight points in the winning 11-0 run before the Fever made two closing free throws, had 25 points on her bobblehead night. She also had five assists to reach 1,300 for her career. The No. 1 draft pick for the San Antonio Spurs told L’Equipe newspaper it was a “difficult” decision to make and that it was “irrevocable.” The World Cup is scheduled from Aug. 25 to Sept. 10 in the Philippines, Japan and Indonesia. Wembanyama says he made the choice “on his own” after consulting with close friends and his medical team. L’Equipe reports that Wembanyama told the France coach and other players from the team about his decision over the weekend. NHL – Blackhawks acquire forward Taylor Hall in multiplayer trade with Bruins The Chicago Blackhawks have acquired Taylor Hall in a trade with the Boston Bruins. The Blackhawks sent pending restricted free agents Ian Mitchell and Alec Regula to Boston for Hall and the expiring contract of Nick Foligno. It gives some valuable salary-cap space to the Bruins heading into free agency. The 31-year-old Hall had 16 goals and 20 assists in 61 games last season. Hall has played alongside at least five fellow No. 1 picks. He is likely to make it six because Chicago is expected to take Connor Bedard at No. 1 in this week’s draft. NHL – Top prospects for the NHL draft from Bedard to Fantilli to Reinbacher and more The NHL Draft opens Wednesday in Nashville, Tennessee. The top prospects include forward Connor Bedard and defenseman David Reinbacher. Bedard is projected to be selected first overall by the Chicago Blackhawks. Reinbacher is under consideration to be the first defenseman drafted. The wild card of the draft is Russian forward Matvei Michkov, who could raise a red flag for some teams because he’s under contract with the Kontinental Hockey League through 2025-26. NHL – Where to pick Russian players is a top question at the NHL draft Matvei Michkov is probably the best hockey prospect out of Russia in nearly a decade. He might be the best since Alex Ovechkin and Evgeni Malkin in 2005. But Michkov still is no lock to get drafted in the top five because he’s still under contract in the KHL for three more seasons. That’s giving NHL teams reason to worry he might never make it to North America. The war in Ukraine has also meant the dilemma over Russian players isn’t just limited to Michkov because of resulting travel restrictions and international bans that have made scouting more difficult. NHL – Connor McDavid wins third NHL MVP, falls one vote short of unanimous selection Connor McDavid has won his third Hart Trophy as NHL MVP after the highest-scoring season by a player in more than a quarter-century. McDavid fell one vote short of unanimous selection. McDavid also won the Ted Lindsay Award as the NHL’s most outstanding player as voted by his peers. The Edmonton Oilers’ captain led the league with 64 goals, 89 assists and 153 points. That’s the most points since Mario Lemieux in 1995-96. One voter out of 196 picked Boston’s David Pastrnak as MVP. San Jose’s Erik Karlsson also became a three-time award winner, receiving the Norris Trophy as top defenseman.  Seattle’s Matty Bernier’s won the Calder Trophy for Rookie of the year. NCAABSB – LSU wins 1st College World Series title since 2009, beating Florida 18-4 LSU cranked up its offense a day after it gave up the most runs ever in a College World Series game and won its first national title since 2009 with a 18-4 victory over Florida in the third and deciding game of the finals. LSU staved off elimination three times in bracket play and bounced back from a 24-4 loss in Game 2 to claim its seventh championship. That’s second to Southern California’s 12. The Tigers wiped out an early 2-0 deficit with a six-run second inning against Jac Caglianone and Cade Fisher. Golf – PGA/LIV– Players returning from LIV part of Saudis’ agreement with PGA Tour Now that the PGA Tour and European tour have a deal with the Saudis, one step is deciding how players can return from LIV Golf if they so choose. That’s part of the framework agreement that was signed last month. The Associated Press obtained a copy of the agreement. It was among documents requested for a Senate hearing on July 11. Senator Richard Blumenthal, a Connecticut Democrat, wants more details on how the deal came together. There still aren’t many details spelled out in the agreement. One part is deciding how players return from LIV Golf and what would be a fair punishment. MLS – Ticket sales and anticipation are high ahead of Messi’s arrival at Inter Miami Lionel Messi announced that he was joining Inter Miami in a move that stunned the soccer world and will bring the sport’s biggest face to the United States and Miami, where enthusiasm for the sport has been growing over the years. The top prospects include forward Connor Bedard and defenseman David Reinbacher. Bedard is projected to be selected first overall by the Chicago Blackhawks.
