Chris Johnston joined us today to break down a chaotic week in the hockey world. We kick things off with Mitch Marner's post-Toronto renaissance: what has fueled his playoff brilliance with the Golden Knights, and why did that version of him never materialize in the 6ix? Turning to Edmonton, CJ gives us the outsider's view on the shocking Kris Knoblauch firing—from the "messy" handling of the news to where Knoblauch lands next. Plus, we debate the looming question: Is this the most pivotal offseason in NHL history? With the Oilers' window closing and a coaching vacancy to fill, the stakes have never been higher. It was then time for the Play Alberta Early Bird Bet of the day. After the break it was time for MMMMMMM That's Good presented by The Italian Centre Shop. A lot of good going on today. YouTube Trev chimed in on what's good for him, which was Schaefer winning this year's Calder Trophy. Which then led to a guessing game, what's the only movie Trev has ever cried too. We capped off hour two with Eric Macramalla. We got his thoughts on the Oilers display of the professionalism this year and his thoughts on the Habs and Sabres series thus far.
This week, the boys talk about the latest happenings in Toronto with Craig Berube's firing, Matthew Schaefer winning the Calder Trophy in a runaway, and two new PWHL teams. Lyle Richardson of Spector's Hockey joins to talk playoffs, Evgeni Malkin, and Vegas blocking their old coaches.

We also take a quick look at Matthew Schaefer winning the Calder Trophy and two Canadian teams making big changes. Eric Jensen and RK break down the world of the NHL. The guys touch base on some college hockey storylines, determine who the contenders are in the East and West and look at the playoff race plus a December viewing guide and some Calder Trophy talk.
The Detroit Red Wings lost 4–3 to the New Jersey Devils, but unlike so many of their blowout losses this season, this one showed real fight. Detroit heavily out-chanced the Devils at 5-on-5, dominated long stretches of play, and nearly tied the game with a frantic two-minute barrage in the final moments. This was one of those rare “good” losses — not something we celebrate often on Red Wings Rant — but the effort in periods two and three showed what this team can be when they lock in. Still, the problems are real. Early defensive mistakes continue to sink the Wings, with breakdowns in coverage, failed clears, and brutal giveaways repeatedly ending up in the back of the net. With Simon Edvinsson out, Detroit is forced to lean more heavily on a third pair that simply cannot keep up. And the analytics tell an even clearer story: the Wings have the 5th worst High-Danger Goals For%, league-worst Medium-Danger Goals For%, 3rd worst shooting percentage, 5th worst save percentage, and 2nd worst PDO at 5-on-5. Even at all strengths, Detroit is top-5 in expected goals but bottom-10 in both shooting and save percentage. A good team keeps beating itself. We also break down strong performances from Larkin, Raymond, Finnie, and Seider, the physical pushback the Wings showed late in the game, the awful non-call on Jonas Siegenthaler's hit to Lucas Raymond's head, and why this loss — strangely — gives us more confidence in Detroit's long-term trajectory. Plus: Emmitt Finnie makes honorable mention in The Athletic's Calder Trophy race. Red Wings Rant: Where tirades and impassioned pleas about your Detroit Red Wings finally have a home. Alberga, Hahn and Jensen cover the most surprising and disappointing teams over the first quarter of the season and the biggest fantasy draft steals and busts around the League. The guys answer fan questions about selling high on Evgeni Malkin, Spencer Knight, Yaroslav Askarov and more, while also discussing the struggles of Brayden Point, Carter Verhaeghe and others. Then, in “On the Money,” presented by Bet365.ca, the guys dive into the updated Stanley Cup odds, NHL Awards races, with angles surrounding Connor Bedard, Macklin Celebrini in various markets, longshot odds for the Jack Adams Award, Calder Trophy and picks for the rest of the week.
Brad Marchand’s emotional return to Boston as a Florida Panther stole the night. Marchand drew a penalty on his first shift, assisted on the ensuing power-play goal, and was visibly moved during a heartfelt tribute video. The guys agree his number will one day be retired in Boston. Elsewhere, the Devils are rolling after a 5-2 win over the Leafs, with Hughes and Hischier leading a team that finally looks like the contender Ray expected last year. Toronto, meanwhile, looked big and slow, Anthony Stolarz allowed five goals one game after publicly calling out his team's performance, and Dregs wonders if Brad Treliving’s offseason tweaks may have backfired as the Leafs search for a second-line center and miss Mitch Marner badly. In Calgary, scoring has dried up despite Dustin Wolf’s strong play, while Montreal’s Ivan Demidov is emerging as a likely Calder Trophy candidate. In Buffalo, Colton Ellis’s debut win over Detroit capped a feel-good story for a goalie who’s battled through the minors to reach the NHL.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Alberga, Hahn and Meaney discuss the Lane Hutson contract extension and the Montreal Canadiens' talented core, as well as some of the top fantasy and betting storylines around the NHL, including Matthew Schaefer's strong EDGE stats and rapid rise in the Calder Trophy race and surprises around the League like fans dropping Ivan Demidov and slow starts for some of the elite Atlantic Division teams. Jensen joins the show to identify the top fantasy waiver wire pickups for Week 2, from the Anaheim Ducks' young duo of Beckett Sennecke and Cutter Gauthier to Shane Pinto's goal-scoring, John Klingberg on the Sharks' PP1, goalies Jet Greaves and Cam Talbot and more. Then, in "On the Money," presented by Bet365, the guys discuss prop angles for games this week, including high-scoring options across the Ducks and Minnesota Wild lineups, Michael Misa's upcoming NHL debut, Zack Bolduc's immediate impact with the Canadiens and more.

(51:18) But before we get to Cam, we talk about the latest San Jose Sharks news. Macklin Celebrini does not win the Calder Trophy. (01:56) There's a ton of trade and free agent targets right now: Who's real, who's not for the San Jose Sharks? (11:10) Of course, Mitch Marner and Jason Robertson and company would look great in teal, but are they realistic hopes? What are sensible ways for the Sharks to acquire K'Andre Miller or Nicolas Hague? What does Keegan think of Combine chatter, like the Sharks thinking hard about Caleb Desnoyers at No. 2? (32:40) And now, Cam! (51:18) What kind of trade could get the New York Islanders to move off No. 1? If the San Jose Sharks pick Michael Misa at No. 2, when does he need to make the decision about going the NCAA route? Does Cam have a No. 2 sleeper, if not Misa? (1:05:18) How sure is Robinson that the Sharks will make Misa the No. 2 pick? Who are some good candidates for the No. 30 and 33 picks? (1:07:50) What does Cam think of Will Smith now? (1:10:15) Cam reported that K'Andre Miller was available…how can the San Jose Sharks improve themselves if they won't hand out six-year plus contracts in free agency, won't offersheet anybody high-end, and only really have futures to trade? Their earliest years were, frankly, like those of many expansion teams. A team comprised of marginal talent as part of the 1972 Expansion Draft and the first-year record certainly reflected that. While the second season saw only slight improvement in the standings, it was the promise of a first overall pick who went on to win the Calder Trophy that laid the foundation of what was ahead. The third season saw a surprising playoff berth, a stunning opening round win over the veteran team from New York City and an historic comeback against Pittsburgh. Then, reality. While the team continued an upward trajectory, the playoff results got increasingly difficult over the course of the next four springs. Finally, in 1980, it came together. A strong core was bolstered in March by the arrival of a college defenseman fresh from winning Olympic gold and a veteran forward who became the final piece of the puzzle. From there, they made history - some of which may never be seen again in the NHL.Join the hosts as they go back 45 years with Captain Denis Potvin, left wing John Tonelli and defenseman Ken Morrow. This is Doormat to Dynasty.IN THIS EPISODE:[00:00] - Open voiced by long-time Islanders play-by-play man Jiggs McDonald with Islanders theme underneath from organist Paul Cartier. [01:25] - Welcome and after Vic and Neil do some initial reminiscing about Bob Nystrom's Cup clinching goal, guests Denis Potvin, John Tonelli and Ken Morrow are welcomed.[05:00] - 45 years later, the guest share their recollections on the Nystrom goal.[10:09] - The approach to 1980 following increasingly difficult playoff losses after the 1975 Cinderella run. Discussion includes the final pieces coming into place with Ken Morrow arrival fresh off a gold medal at the Olympics and Butch Goring proving to be the missing link coming in a trade from Los Angeles.[16:15] - The road the first championship begins, including the brutal second round series against the Boston Bruins and some hijinks during the semi-final with Buffalo.[32:25] - The Final against rival Flyers begins with some sidebar stories about the toughness of the Broad Street Bullies.[52:10] - With a 3-1 series lead, the Isles drop Game 5 and return to Nassau Coliseum for the potential clincher. After letting a 4-2 third period lead get away, the stage is set for overtime. [1:02:14] - Vivid descriptions of the celebration after the Islanders first-ever Stanley Cup-winning goal. [1:10:51] - 1981 and the first defense of the Cup. The team doesn't miss a beat...even with Neil Smith joining the organization. Among the stories is Denis sharing the emotional piece of his brother Jean being traded away before being re-acquired.[1:17:09] - After an opening round scare, the Isles roll to their third Cup with the Final over Vancouver featuring a spectacular goal in Game 3 by Conn Smythe winner Mike Bossy,[1:23:24] - In pursuit of the fourth Cup, the club drops a bit during the regular season but is more than ready for an upstart team from Edmonton with a phenom wearing #99. In the end, the challengers learn some valuable lessons from the defending champs.[1:33:49] - Going after the Canadiens record of five straight Stanley Cups, the Isles discover their opponent learned well from the previous spring. However, to this day, the guests are still rankled by a change in scheduling during the Final.[1:43:50]- With the dynasty at an end, the perspective and significance of its place in league history becomes more evident with time.[1:54:05] - A final personal question to Ken, John and Denis.X: https://twitter.com/NHLWraparoundNeil Smith: https://twitter.com/NYCNeilVic Morren: https://www.linkedin.com/in/vic-morren-7038737/NHL Wraparound Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/nhlwraparound/#NHLWraparound #ShortShifts...
