Very cool morning today (not just temperature wise), where I found 3 connections to a message I wanted to share with you. First came a post that I saw on Twitter / X, where Bri Lewerke (@brilewerke) shared a clip about how “The way Erica Wheeler is looking out for Caitlin Clark is everything.” It's about an older, more experienced player helping a younger player and where both of them put ego aside to be their best for each other and their team. I then listened to Mitch Albom's “Tuesday People” podcast with his friend & producer Lisa Goich, and today's podcast Episode 202 (find it HERE) where they talk about the more experienced actors helping the younger ones in the play about “Tuesdays With Morrie”. Mitch makes a great connection with just about all the different play productions around the world, where the older actor (playing Morrie) and the younger actor (playing Mitch), develop this very strong friendship - exactly how it happened for the real Mitch and Morrie. Wisdom being shared with younger people where it changes lives! Finally, from the book that I read a passage from, every morning, “The Traveler's Gift” by Andy Andrews - comes the lesson on Wisdom. It reminds us that we do get to choose who we hang out with and learn from, along with the importance the words from wiser people are often like raindrops on dry ground. They help people grow. So again, a very inspirational connection here with these 3 things (at least for me) and I hope you are able to draw some lessons to add to your life and the lives of others. Thanks for listening. Erica Wheeler took over as Indiana Fever point guard, and the team took tremendous strides forward in the 2023 season. This is not a coincidence, which host Howard Megdal dives into with Erica on the latest podcast. Wheeler played all 40 regular season games, and has big plans for the Fever going forward. The two discuss Erica's mission to not only give back to the community, but to find ways to do it at a cost that anyone can afford. Welcome to episode 18 of the Nurtured by Nature podcast. Today I'm delighted to be joined in conversation by the sensational Erica Wheeler of Sense of Place Consulting. During this inspiring episode we discuss how many of us will find ourselves feeling out of place and uprooted at some point during our lives and why connection to the world around us is so important and how by finding a way to belong we can allow the ancestry of the places we inhabit to weave their magical stories into our own unique tapestries of life. We also challenge the concept of utilising negativity to evoke responsibility and explore the power of story to build the bridges of connection in our search for meaning that help leave a lasting imprint and inspire love and the reasons to care. From my own experience I know it's very easy to feel depressed by the negative dialogues we are constantly bombarded by but Erica's wisdom is simple yet profound: “Ask yourself, does it make it better living in despair? Don't complicate it your only job is to tune into love and express this…”Learn more about EricaErica Wheeler is an award-winning singer-songwriter, a TEDx speaker, a professional development trainer and a creative mentor. MLB – Major League Baseball Last Night Detroit Tigers 7, Texas Rangers 2 Los Angeles Angels 2, Chicago White Sox 1 Cubs were off Tigers 7, Rangers 2 – Ibanez and Rogers homer as the Tigers win 7-2 over Texas after two more pitchers get hurt Andy Ibañez and Jake Rogers homered for the Detroit Tigers, who overcame the early departures of their first two pitchers to beat the AL West-leading Texas Rangers 7-2. Tigers starter Matthew Boyd and reliever Will Vest were already hurt and out of the game before Ibañez hit a tiebreaking three-run homer in the third inning for a 4-1 lead. Rogers went deep with two outs in the sixth to chase Rangers starter Andrew Heaney. Six Tigers pitchers combined for 16 strikeouts, the most against Texas this season. Angels 2, White Sox 1 – Trout, Ohtani give Angels 2-1 walk-off win over White Sox Mike Trout scored on a game-ending wild pitch, Shohei Ohtani hit his 26th home run, and the Los Angeles Angels defeated the Chicago White Sox 2-1. Trout slid home head-first on the bad throw by Aaron Bummer, helping the Angels get a critical seven-game homestand off to a successful start. After having struck out in each of his first three appearances, Trout drew a leadoff walk against Reynaldo López (2-5). Bummer then came in to face Ohtani, who drew his own walk. The two Angels superstars successfully executed a double steal, which set up Trout’s heroics and the team’s second walk-off win on a wild pitch this season. Carlos Estéves (2-1) pitched a scoreless ninth inning to get the win. Luis Robert Jr. homered for the third straight game for the White Sox. Reliever Will Vest left an inning later with right knee discomfort. Boyd left the mound with a trainer after several minutes consulting with him. Manager A.J. Hinch took the ball away from the left-hander, who at one point in the conversation pointed at his arm. Vest was clearly in discomfort after landing awkwardly on a 1-1 pitch in the second inning. Wilson cleaned up against Indiana for the third time with 24 points and 10 rebounds, plus three steals, three blocks and three assists. Gray, who had eight points in the winning 11-0 run before the Fever made two closing free throws, had 25 points on her bobblehead night. She also had five assists to reach 1,300 for her career. L’Equipe reports that Wembanyama told the France coach and other players from the team about his decision over the weekend. NHL – Blackhawks acquire forward Taylor Hall in multiplayer trade with Bruins The Chicago Blackhawks have acquired Taylor Hall in a trade with the Boston Bruins. The Blackhawks sent pending restricted free agents Ian Mitchell and Alec Regula to Boston for Hall and the expiring contract of Nick Foligno. It gives some valuable salary-cap space to the Bruins heading into free agency. The 31-year-old Hall had 16 goals and 20 assists in 61 games last season. Hall has played alongside at least five fellow No. 1 picks. He is likely to make it six because Chicago is expected to take Connor Bedard at No. 1 in this week’s draft. NHL – Top prospects for the NHL draft from Bedard to Fantilli to Reinbacher and more The NHL Draft opens Wednesday in Nashville, Tennessee. The top prospects include forward Connor Bedard and defenseman David Reinbacher. Bedard is projected to be selected first overall by the Chicago Blackhawks. Reinbacher is under consideration to be the first defenseman drafted. The wild card of the draft is Russian forward Matvei Michkov, who could raise a red flag for some teams because he’s under contract with the Kontinental Hockey League through 2025-26. NHL – Where to pick Russian players is a top question at the NHL draft Matvei Michkov is probably the best hockey prospect out of Russia in nearly a decade. He might be the best since Alex Ovechkin and Evgeni Malkin in 2005. But Michkov still is no lock to get drafted in the top five because he’s still under contract in the KHL for three more seasons. That’s giving NHL teams reason to worry he might never make it to North America. The war in Ukraine has also meant the dilemma over Russian players isn’t just limited to Michkov because of resulting travel restrictions and international bans that have made scouting more difficult. NHL – Connor McDavid wins third NHL MVP, falls one vote short of unanimous selection Connor McDavid has won his third Hart Trophy as NHL MVP after the highest-scoring season by a player in more than a quarter-century. McDavid fell one vote short of unanimous selection. McDavid also won the Ted Lindsay Award as the NHL’s most outstanding player as voted by his peers. The Edmonton Oilers’ captain led the league with 64 goals, 89 assists and 153 points. That’s the most points since Mario Lemieux in 1995-96. One voter out of 196 picked Boston’s David Pastrnak as MVP. San Jose’s Erik Karlsson also became a three-time award winner, receiving the Norris Trophy as top defenseman. It gives some valuable salary-cap space to the Bruins heading into free agency. The 31-year-old Hall had 16 goals and 20 assists in 61 games last season. The selection of the 19-year-old from France that had been a foregone conclusion for months was announced by NBA Commissioner Adam Silver on Thursday night at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Wembanyama arrives with far more height and hype than most No. 1 picks. Listed at 7-foot-4, he dominated his French league in his final season there, leading all players in scoring, rebounding and blocked shots. Brandon Miller of Alabama was the No. 2 pick by the Charlotte Hornets and Scoot Henderson went third to the Portland Trail Blazers. NBA – Pistons, Pacers banking on lottery selections to provide immediate help on defense The Detroit Pistons and Indiana Pacers used lottery picks on players who should make their biggest early impact on defense while the rest of the Central Division teams sat out the first round of Thursday’s draft. Detroit selected wing Ausar Thompson of the Overtime Elite developmental program with the fifth overall selection. Indiana took Houston forward Jarace Walker, who went eighth. Both the Pistons and Pacers ended up with two first-round picks. The Pistons added Houston guard Marcus Sasser and the Pacers landed Belmont forward Ben Sheppard later in the first round. The Pistons received some tough luck in the lottery when they got stuck with the fifth pick despite having the NBA’s worst record at 17-65. But they believe they found a keeper in Thompson. The Bulls traded into the second round with Washington to acquire Tennessee forward Julian Phillips at No. 35. NBA – Jett Howard follows his father Juwan’s path from Michigan to NBA lottery pick Jett Howard can only hope he keeps following in his father’s footsteps as he goes from Michigan to the NBA. He joined his father Juwan as an NBA draft lottery pick Thursday night. Juwan still has bragging rights as the fifth pick overall in the 1994 draft out of Michigan. His son went at No. 11 overall to Orlando after playing his lone college season for his father at Michigan. Jett credited all the time spent learning from his father on and off the court for preparing him. The two-time NBA champ played 1,208 games over 19 years with eight different teams. Executive vice president of basketball operations Arturas Karnisovas says the Bulls do not expect him back next season. He says it “would be great” if Ball does return in 2023-24. NBA – Victor Wembanyama is the No. 1 pick in the NBA draft, with expectations of stardom Victor Wembanyama is the No. 1 pick in the NBA draft, headed to San Antonio with enormous expectations to become basketball’s newest sensation. 35. His son went at No. 11 overall to Orlando after playing his lone college season for his father at Michigan. The rules are intended to protect catchers. But runners are now sometimes safe even after being tagged out and without any collision. San Diego manager Melvin and Texas manager Bochy both had outs recorded by their teams this week become runs after replay viewed that their catchers obstructed the runner. Kelly and Triplett each shot 5-under 67 to finish at 18-under 198, two strokes ahead of Steven Alker and Hall of Famer Bernhard Langer. NASCAR – Logano wins in OT Joey Logano jockeyed for the lead with Kyle Busch in overtime before winning the inaugural NASCAR Cup Series race at World Wide Technology Raceway. Logano moved ahead of Busch for good just before the white flag flew, giving Team Penske its second major win of the day. Penske won the IndyCar race with Will Power earlier in the day in Detroit. Kurt Busch finished third with Logano’s teammate, Ryan Blaney, fourth and Aric Almirola in fifth. FIFA – USA Soccer – Macario out of Women’s World Cup qualifiers with ACL injury U.S. national team forward Catarina Macario injured her the anterior cruciate ligament in a match with French club team Lyon and will miss World Cup qualifying next month. Macario was injured 13 minutes into Lyon’s season finale on Wednesday, a 4-0 victory over Issy. The 22-year-old was Lyon’s top scorer this season with 23 goals in 35 matches across all competitions. The injury means she’ll miss the CONCACAF W Championships next month in Mexico, which determine the region’s World Cup teams. FIFA – Ukraine’s World Cup quest ends with loss to Wales amid war Ukraine has missed out on qualifying for the World Cup after the war-disrupted team lost 1-0 to Wales in the European playoff final for the FIFA soccer showpiece. Andriy Yarmolenko inadvertently headed the ball into his own net while trying to clear Wales captain Gareth Bale’s first-half free kick. This was an agonizing end to Ukraine’s emotionally charged mission to qualify for the World Cup in Qatar while remaining under invasion by Russia. Wales will head to a first World Cup in 64 years and will open against the United States on Nov. 21 before playing Iran and England. Orlando finished with the worst record in the Eastern Conference at 22-60 and missed the playoffs for the eighth time in 10 years. But they got a huge win in the lottery, with the top pick for the first time since taking Howard in 2004. Duke’s Paolo Banchero, Gonzaga’s Chet Holmgren, Purdue’s Jaden Ivey and Auburn’s Jabari Smith are widely considered the most likely candidates to be taken first. Danielle Robinson and Kelsey Mitchell score 12 points apiece. NaLyssa Smith, the No. 2 overall selection in last month’s draft, did not play for the Fever due to an ankle injury. Tonight Chicago Sky at Seattle Storm, 10:00 p.m. WNBA – State Dept pushing to see Griner; NBA Commissioner weighs in The State Department said Tuesday that it still pushing to have regular contact with WNBA star Brittney Griner, who has been detained in Russia for nearly three months. A consular official was able to meet with Griner last week, when her pre-trial detention in Russia was extended for one month. Griner has been detained since February, after vape cartridges containing oil derived from cannabis were allegedly found in her luggage at an airport in Moscow. The NBA also weighed in on the matter Tuesday. Commissioner Adam Silver says his league is also trying to bring Griner home. NFL – Bears try to prove they can support QB Justin Fields The Chicago Bears have brought in numerous new faces on offense, but none of the most expensive free agents and they used their second-round draft picks for defensive help, so at organized team activity workouts they face questions about how well they’ve supported quarterback Justin Fields. The Bears signed third-round receiver Velus Jones to a contract on Tuesday and added another offensive lineman in Shon Coleman, but they’re trying to prove competition and a thorough understanding of their new offense can compensate for the lack of top-level offensive help for Fields. NFL – Former Bears RB Tarik Cohen injured during streamed workout Former Chicago Bears running back Tarik Cohen, now a free agent, apparently suffered an injury during a training session being live-streamed on his Instagram account. The hard-luck player, released in March by the Bears due to past injuries, grabbed the back of his leg after going down during the workout. The incident was seen on Instagram Live, with Cohen falling to the floor after back-peddling. Cohen played three full seasons with Chicago but made it to only three games in 2021 before tearing knee ligaments. Horse Racing – Rich Strike skipping Preakness reignites Triple Crown debate Kentucky Derby winner Rich Strike’s absence from the Preakness has reignited the debate over whether the spacing of the three Triple Crown races should be changed. The current schedule of two weeks from the Derby to Preakness and then three weeks to the Belmont has been in place since 1969, except for 2020 when the pandemic disrupted the order. Proponents of change argue it’s better for horses to get more rest and that the Preakness would become a better race. Those in favor of the status quo point to the sport’s tradition and say it should be difficult to win the Triple Crown. WNBA – Women’s National Basketball Association Last Night Atlanta Dreams 101, Indiana Fever 79 Dream 101, Fever 79 – Howard scores 19 as Dream beat Fever, again, 101-79 Rhyne Howard scored 19 points, Cheyenne Parker added 17 and the Atlanta Dream beat the Indiana Fever 101-79. Erica Wheeler had a season-high 16 points and rookie Kristy Wallace added a career-best 15 for Atlanta. Wallace was a second-round pick out of Baylor in 2018 and made her WNBA debut in the season opener after playing professionally in her native Australia the last four seasons. Howard hit 3-pointers to open and close an 11-2 opening run and the Dream never trailed. Victoria Vivians led Indiana (2-4) with 16 points. Cade Cunningham had 25 points, nine assists and seven rebounds for the Pistons. NBA – Silver says NBA plans to keep next All-Star Game in Utah The NBA plans to keep its next All-Star Game in Salt Lake City, despite its opposition to Utah’s ban on transgender youth athletes playing on girls teams. The NBA pulled the 2017 All-Star Game out of Charlotte because of its opposition to a North Carolina law known as HB2 that limited anti-discrimination protections for lesbian, gay and transgender people.
