Send us a textChrystal and Merf welcome the incomparable Marie Denee, founder of The Curvy Fashionista, for a real-talk episode packed with fashion, fire, and fat joy. Marie shares her journey from launching a blog in 2008 to becoming one of the most respected voices in plus-size media. We dive into fashion industry pitfalls, the power of representation (yes, including steamy werewolf smut), and how Marie's pushing boundaries with her growing digital empire. This one is full of laughs, inspiration, and a whole lot of truth. Plus, find out which sex toy brand has Marie feeling fancy.
Calling all fashionistas! This one is for you! Truth be told I had to Google where Inland Empire is and the origin of the name which was a bit embarrassing because, I consider myself a rather savvy person when it comes to geography. Fun fact! It's the place where my next guest is from and before you go down the rabbit hole of what this mysteriously named place is, like I did, listen to this super inspiring episode first! Marie Denee is a true OG when it comes to the plus-size movement and industry. She started the website The Curvy Fashionista fifteen years ago and is the sole creator and EIC aka Editor in Chic. I love that title! Since then TCF has been providing reliable, real, and très chic curated content. By sharing the latest plus-size fashion news and updates for all, she's created a community that supports each other highlighting how empowering it is to be yourself. During my book launch she asked for an article about living in Paris and staying empowered. I was happy to oblige. She and I talk about the history of the industry, the current climate, what works and what doesn't but most importantly she offers us all fantastic insight into what it means to hold that entrepreneurial spirit and how to keep it going in a way that is rooted in self-care and love. I learned so much from this conversation and I know you will too! You can find Marie on instagram @mariedenee and on her website mariedenee.com. You can learn more about me

One of the challenges the plus size community has faced for years is proper representation when it comes to brands and the companies with whom we choose to spend our money. Several retailers have expanded their offerings for plus in the past few years. It seems that while major strides have been made with the number of plus size offerings that have become available over the years, some retailers are still missing the mark when it comes to what actually matters to their customers. What will it look like on ME or a body that looks like MINE? Plus size shoppers, like anyone else, want to see what clothing will look like on bodies that resemble their own. When a brand boasts offerings up to a size 26, but only use models that stop at a size 16/18, that feels a bit disingenuous. It sends the message that larger bodies are good enough to give a brand their money, but not good enough to be represented in their ad campaigns or on their social media platforms. On this week's episode of The Thickening, Toni, Danni and a few special guests, tackle this issue head on! Plus size influencers Saucye West, Marcy Cruz, and Marie Denee drop in to discuss The ROI (return on investment) of Representation. A discussion on brands that cater to the plus size demographic and what they are doing right and wrong. TOPICS Where do the Brand's bottom line and the consumers wants and needs intersect? Many brands fall short of giving the plus size community what we want or what we need. They even fall short of defining their stance and position when it comes to the needs and wants of their plus size consumers. What can they do to better serve their customers? As customers we often share feedback with brands via social media, videos, and email. More often than not, it seems as though our voices are not being heard. What steps could brands take to show their customers that they are listening to our wants and needs? Follow Our Team on Social Media! Fashion brands are upping marketing rhetoric and imagery to include a wider range of body types, but many companies are still failing to serve the plus-size consumer. The market for plus-size fashion is worth nearly $30 billion in the US alone. But while brands are upping marketing rhetoric and imagery to include a wider range of body types, many companies are still failing to serve the plus-size consumer. In the latest episode of The BoF Podcast, chief correspondent Lauren Sherman speaks with Marie Denee, creator and editor-in-chief of The Curvy Fashionista, Alexandra Waldman, co-founder and creative director of Universal Standard and BoF’s senior editorial associate Alexandra Mondalek about the right way to do plus-size fashion. Plus-size customers want one thing: choice. But too often they’re left sifting through limited ranges that reflect a narrow view of how they should dress. “Give us the same assortment,” Denee said, adding that brands must unlearn tropes about what the industry can offer plus-size consumers. Lazy marketing that co-opts the language of body positivity without really serving plus-size shoppers is also a problem. “We have to learn to speak to a consumer that has been not just ignored, but belittled… it’s an emotional minefield,” said Waldman. “Body positivity is a personal journey.” Companies need to invest in plus-size ranges too, taking the time and spending the cash to perfect fit, style and branding. “You have got to be led by the change and not the money,” explains Waldman. Beauty does truly come in all shapes and sizes. Luckily, the fashion industry realized this a while ago and started catering clothes to plus-sized people, who often struggled when finding garments that fitted them correctly. However, it was not easy finding brands and businesses that offered this. This is why Marie Denee, today's guest, started her own blog called “The Curvy Fashionista,” in order to show brands and designers that offered plus-sized clothes. Marie is a respected voice in the plus-size fashion arena and has made it her mission to continuously empower women to feel Curvy, Confident, and Chic.Highlights:Marie Denee explains how “The Curvy Fashionista” started out as a simple blog and then evolved into a media platform for plus-sized women, plus-size fashion, and lifestyle. On the fourth episode of Radically Honest, your host Dasom Lee brings in this week's double threat—Influencer and Entrepreneur—Marie Denee. This powerful Black woman is Creator and Editor-in-Chief of The Curvy Fashionista, a magazine and plus-size fashion resource. Her mega-platform celebrates the beauty in diversity. Don't miss it—all ears on deck. The Great Recession hit the United States in 2008—and suddenly Marie found herself unemployed. Propelled by the insecurity entrenched in her retail career, she began building her dream business from her laptop screen. An early adopter in the blogging world, Marie was forced to become comfortable with ambiguity. Mutually beneficial relationships sprouted, as bloggers rallied toward an incomprehensible state of financial success on premature platforms. Two driving factors pushed her: bills to pay and her empathy for plus-size shoppers, derived from her own in-between sizing. Originally a boutique idea, she launched her personal brand on mariedenee.com. She recognized something valuable: women of color are dominating the plus-size industry and deserve to be praised. Today, her digital platform illuminates the positive voices of diverse, plus-size influencers all over the globe. In an even more courageous fashion, Marie shares stories of overcoming anxiety and depression to help her audience realize that they are not alone. Her career has been shaped by a few key ideas, gifted by her role models. Never diminish yourself in your act of uplifting others. Project your light. Radiate outwards and bring your purpose full-circle “I realized that I wasn't recognizing my own dope-ness.“ – Marie Denee. A challenging twelve years later, her success speaks volumes of her hard work ethic. Don't restrict yourself to a moment where you'll finally breathe, “I made it.” Her philosophy is to break down the confines of your perceivable success and expand your reach. To put it simply, the sky is not the limit. In light of COVID-19 affecting the state of our nation, her Facebook Live series inflamed her spark once more. Business owners have united in an online community where advice is shared and ideas are exchanged. So, how can you combat mental barriers and bring your vision to life?
