Today we're talking all about size zero to plus size: fashion tips for all sizes from a personal stylist. As a stylist, it's my job to not only be well versed in many brands for men and women, it's also important for me to understand what each client feels good or not so good about when it comes to their body. Some people don't say it up front in our initial Closet Edit call, sometimes it comes up as we are shopping and they try something on that fits well, but their insecurity comes out in how they feel about it. I share my top tips with you for dressing your body type and dressing to feel really confident and good about yourself. Here are the brands I mentioned below:

Plus-Sized Hearts starts its journey with a very special guest from Korea. Vivian Geeyang Kim is a true trailblazer in Korea's plus-size scene. After attempting to go see a showing of Jeanie Finlay's empowering documentary Your Fat Friend at the DMZ Doc Fest in Seoul I saw that Vivian was on the speakers panel after the showing.   After a couple of DMs and emails, Vivian and I ended up having dinner at a great burger place in a cool part of Seoul and the rest is history. Every time we meet, I learn something from her about staying true to yourself. She is unapologetic when it comes to making sure people (mostly women) in Korea feel seen and heard no matter what their body size. For the past 15 years Vivian has been chipping away at the Korean culture's tendency to completely turn away from people with larger bodies. She's been steadfast in her commitment to bring about awareness that people with larger bodies are people with hearts, feelings and have the right to do as they chose living in the society of Korea, and most importantly they have a right to live without feeling like they don't belong. Try not to tear up at the end when she shares what she does to keep her heart plus-sized. Vivian put her money where her heart is and started her own design house called im66100 and she shares what the name means in this episode. She's also been photographed in major fashion magazines such as Vogue and Elle. She appears regularly on TV talking about being plus-size in Korea.  This first episode of Plus-Size Hearts is one you don't want to miss! Here's where you can learn more about Vivian and her ongoing projects: Instagram: @plusmodelThreads: @plusmodelDesign house: www.im66100.comVivian's website: plusmodelkorea.comYoutube: @kimgeeyang You can learn more about me

We are so honored and thrilled to have our Fashion Bestie, Supermodel EMME, back with us on the podcast this week! She is here to share her favorite summer fashion picks and give us a short recap from our last show where we interviewed the winner of her “Fashion Without Limits” competition, Nina Chen.     Go back to EP 152 and have a listen!      EMME's Favorite Summer Fashion Picks:  Our BFFF (best fashion friend forever), EMME spent some time in Mexico this summer at Rancho La Puerta, a wellness resort in Tecata on the Mexican border - and as you can imagine - it was HOT and SUNNY!     So, what are her secrets for beating the heat while staying in style?     A large reed beach bag that she cannot leave home without.  A large sun hat, long sleeves and clean-ingredient sunscreens!  Anything linen. She says breathability is key, so go with the wrinkles if you are hot!   Smocked Tops (you may even be able to go without a bra if you do it right).  Any sort of tunic which will provide cool and stylish coverage – think Morocco.  NYDJ skinny jeans.  Gladiator sandals.  Fresh pedicures (due to a “hiking toe”).  Bathing suits that will stay on her body because she likes to move around in the water. Favorite swimwear brands include Anne Cole and Nautica – whose designs bridge the gap between coverage and style.     Hot Tip: check out Swimsuits for All* for the best selection of women's swimwear!    *As we speak, Holly is wrapping up an interview at the SWIMSUITS FOR ALL headquarters in NYC. Stay tuned for that episode!     EMME's vision for Fashion Without Limits Design Competition  To recap: Supermodel Emme is a Division 1 college athlete who put “athletic curvy” on the map and rose to fame in the mid-1990's as the world's first plus-size Supermodel, and is once again shedding light on size inclusivity in the fashion industry.     After beating cancer a few years ago, EMME felt strongly about creating a legacy project. The result of this vision was the creation of the Fashion Without Limits Design Initiative.     Teaming up with her alma mater Syracuse University and online plus-size retailer OneStopPlus (OSP), the nationally recognized advocate for body positivity, health and wellness is promoting fashion inclusivity in the classroom with the 8th Annual Fashion Without Limits (FWL) Design Competition.      Emme enlisted the help of fellow advocate and veteran plus-size fashion designer Zahir Babvani, head of design & style for OneStopPlus, to inspire a new generation of up-and-coming fashion designers to put their talents to work for the silent majority -- the estimated 70 percent of American women who wear sizes 12 and up! #FACTS    Emme says that she created this competition to galvanize the design school community around the exciting career opportunities in one of the fastest growing, yet most under-served, segments of the fashion industry.      The 1985 Syracuse University grad, athletic Hall of Famer, and Fashion Without Limits founder says, “Learning from successful designers like Zahir Babvani shows young designers that this is a rewarding career path. Syracuse University is at the forefront of making inclusive design an exciting area of concentration, giving tomorrow's designers the skills, and ability, to enact real change on the fashion landscape. We hope this program will become a template for other schools moving forward.”    According to Emme, curvy women are professionals, celebrities, mothers, daughters and sisters.     “All women want to feel special, confident, and secure in their clothes.  At Fashion Without Limits, we believe that love, happiness, and success have no size limits. Our goal is to offer fashion design students an inclusive curriculum that enables them to provide women of all shapes and sizes with the apparel they want and deserve.” – EMME    It has been so fun catching up with the delightful EMME. We will continue to follow her Fashion Without Limits program, and her mission to change fashion for the better with size-inclusive styles.  #YAAASSSS!    Thank you, EMME!       VOTE FOR US!  In other fashion news, we have been nominated for the People's Choice Podcast Awards honoring podcasters since 2005, and we would love for you to vote for us.    Please vote via this three-step process:      Go to https://www.podcastawards.com/ and create an account.    Please verify your account via your confirmation email.    Then you can vote for us in the People's Choice Award, and in the Arts Category.       We know this is a big ask. Big retailers like Old Navy and Loft have swung and missed. Contemporary brands like Staud and ALC have quietly launched extended sizes that disappeared before getting any traction. Because your favorite personal stylist  Holly Katz, is expanding her focus on CELEBRATING WOMEN-OWNED BRANDS and WOMEN ENTREPRENEURS on the podcast - all year - this year!  #Yaaaaaasssss!    And who better to PUMP US UP with confidence and wisdom than our new BFFF (Best Fashion Friend Forever), than supermodel and fashion mold-breaker, EMME?!     After three decades empowering women and influencing (shapeshifting / disrupting) the worlds of fashion and beauty, Emme has all this experience and more to share!    We are all about Fashion Over 40 - and we mean, WAAAAAYYY over 40.  So, it is perfect timing that EMME sits down with Holly to talk about loving who you are - no matter what stage of life you are in.    LISTEN HERE!    About EMME:   Emme has been a trusted voice in the fashion, wellness, beauty, and news industries for more than 20 years, and she is widely regarded as a trailblazing social reformer for women's empowerment and positive body image. She is the founder of the True Beauty Foundation, whose mission is to enhance young people's mental wellness.     Emme's passion is to "feel extraordinarily free in our bodies and live our most inspired lives possible" as a TV personality, brand spokesperson, TV and podcast host, consultant, author, Revlon spokeswoman, keynote speaker, and creative director of her clothing lines (EMME®, mebyEMME®, and TrueBeautybyEMME®).    Emme was chosen twice for People Magazine's "50 Most Beautiful People," and Ladies' Home Journal named her one of the "Most Important Women in America" and one of the "Most Fascinating Women of the Year."     In 2018, Oprah Magazine dubbed her the "Godmother of the Full-Figured Industry." Emme is also a TEDx speaker. She has also been recognized as one of the "Women of the Year" by Glamour Magazine and one of the "25 Most Influential Women" by Biography magazine.     So, now you know that EMME is a BFD.  (If you need to Google that, then go ahead.) But this girl knows fashion. And she knows women's fashion over 40...and how to love living in your own skin after 40.   Join us for a delightful, enlightening and refreshing conversation about loving the woman that you are. Not what you see on Instagram. Not the one you see in photoshopped images in magazines. Not what the trends tell you to be.     In Emme's words:    “I love finding joy within the honoring of my body and all that it can do. I love being in fashion, being able to be involved in fashion and wearing trend-appropriate fashion. I was also an athlete growing up, so I love being out and about and being fit.”    Emme has written a book and done TV shows, and it's all around honoring the body, all the different shapes and sizes and colors and all that we are - and not listening to voices that dictate that “you should be this way, or you should be that way.”     “I don't want to feel like I am “less-than” every single step of my life. I want to feel infused with joy. That is it. It's an inward journey to tap in, tune in and turn on to that.”    “So, when you hear messaging on the outside, when you hear conversations around the dinner table, when you hear cocktail party discussions, or you see billboards and your image - or your friends' images - are not reflected in the ideas of beauty, just know that deep down inside, that if you're rocking your life and you're in it to win it, that's the best place to be, instead of trying to change yourself.”  EMME    MKAYYY, #PREACCHHH     For instance, one day, you might not have a big butt and then suddenly the trend is that you need to have a bigger butt.  So, you run out and try and get one.  Or, the next day you need to have a certain hairstyle, so blah, blah, blah. Don't spend time being something you're not.    From her early days in journalism to becoming the first plus-size supermodel to becoming a life coach, EMME's journey is one all women can relate to.     She has broken every rule and every mold that women have been forced to believe for decades – and then – she walked New York Fashion Week runway in her 50s for Chromat - in lingerie - no less!   (Or, very much less!) This is GIVING. US. LIFE.   Her inspiring, nurturing and thoughtful approach to being body-positive, to tapping into to her female super-powers and spreading human happiness, is just a beyond refreshing conversation to hear. You'll want to save this one.   Listen, review, SHARE and enjoy this soul-comforting episode wherever you get your podcasts.     FASHION CRIMES PODCAST  “The Best Fashion Friend You Never Knew You Needed!”    Hosted by your favorite personal stylist, Holly Katz!  www.fashioncrimespodcast.com

Natalie Wakeling is Australia's first plus-size editorial model, turned size inclusive fashion designer and she's got a bone to pick with the fashion industry. Natalie has been part of a pioneering movement to redefine the fashion and retail industry into a more size inclusive, body positive space not only for customers and models but also plus size designer brands. And not just a ‘we feature some curvy girls once a year in our body diversity issue' inclusive. As in, get these brands on the runway, plaster real bodies all over billboards and start supporting the fact that retail customers (and most styling clients) are a size 14 MINIMUM. Her most recent ‘win' was the battle with the giants of fashion week to get the first plus size parade (called the Curve Edit) debuting at Australian Fashion Week. Natalie began her designing career with Embody Denim in 2006, which has now become one of Australia's most recognised and respected size inclusive brands featuring a full collection of denim and apparel. Nat shares some incredible stats that will be helpful for you stylists when it comes to your marketing material. USE THESE FACTS IN YOUR POSTS ⬇️ Google search data revealed Australia has become the country most interested in size inclusive and ethical clothing in the past 3 months. A report by McKinsey said “60 percent of people considered a brands ethics while shopping” A report by ABS showed “the average woman's waist circumference was 88cm, equivalent to sizes 16-18” AND THAT'S NOT ALL THE BEEF For plus size, size inclusive designers to thrive, which is what all of your clients want, we need the media to support them. That means features, PR, editorial coverage, celeb endorsements, to broaden the reach of these brands and get them in front of your clients. SO SHE'S DOING SOMETHING ABOUT IT, GOD DAMN IT Natalie has started a national movement called #realaustralianfashion The goal is to raise enough money to book out a whole year's worth of advertorial space in Australia's top magazines and fill the pages with size inclusive brands, styled by Australian stylists specialising in curvy clients, and on curvy models that truly represent the average Australian customer. BUT SHE WANTS YOUR HELP STYLISTS! “I'd actually really like (stylists) to reach out because I'm going to need help. I can't do all of this on my own. I really want this to be a collective effort amongst women and the community. This is about raising awareness to all the stylists that are struggling to find quality, sustainable, designer brands for their clients, and for customers looking for brands they would love.” If you're a stylist in Australia who'd like to be included in the upcoming shoots, please email info@stylingadvisory.com.au LINKS https://www.embodywomen.com/pages/natalie-wakeling https://www.instagram.com/nataliewakeling/?hl=en RECENT PRESS https://www.mamamia.com.au/plus-size-jeans-review-embody-women/

Welcome back to Silhouettes. This week; the first episode in a new series focussing on the history behind what many would consider 'modern' fashion trends. We start this new trio of episodes with a topic close to my heart - The History of Plus Size Fashion, where I debunk the ideas around modern sentimentalities in fashion. Fashion for the larger woman is not just something we have today, but has a long, often tenuous, history. People have always been curvy, fat, plump (or stout as the term used to be) and how these are not words to shy away from, then or now! Plus-size fashion has always been along for the ride for generations of gorgeous, gorgeous girls, and in this episode we discuss it's origins, including the unexpected role Amelia Earhart has to play. -Mild TW for this episode, as I do briefly go into the history of diet culture and ideas towards fatness

Eight years ago, Nadia Boujarwah launched fashion styling and e-commerce company Dia & Co to cater to women wearing sizes 10-32. This customer segment has long been neglected, but according to Boujarwah, brand interest in serving the demo is at its height. “The social calls for inclusivity have never been more pronounced,” she said on the latest Glossy Podcast. “Inclusivity has really moved into the limelight in the last two years." She added, "We're hopeful we're at the beginning of the next renaissance of plus-size fashion, where both the social imperative and the inventory availability finally meet”. Old Navy recently laid the foundation for such a renaissance by launching inclusive sizing, pricing and merchandising across its women's product portfolio. Of course, not every brand can afford to make such an investment in the category -- but doing so isn't needed to forward progress, Boujarwah said. “Our advice to brands is to just start [offering plus-size options],” Boujarwah said. “As long as the customer knows they're on a journey with you – where things are going to get better, and that is communicated clearly – the endpoint doesn't have to be today.” In addition, Boujarwah discussed Dia & Co.'s strategic use of data, approach to fundraising and evolving business model.

Diet culture, starving ourselves, food guilt, being at war with our shape, fat phobia, body shame. It's a special kind of torture and what I've discovered is that no woman is immune to this hell. For plus-sized women, magnify the feelings of pain by 100 because of how our culture responds to those who don't fit in, literally. Listen in as we talk about Sarah's life growing up as a fat and happy child and what her uncle told her about her weight and her worth. Hear about how the fashion industry disregards plus-sized women and how much of the population that actually omits. Gain insight into how fat phobia is literally everywhere in our culture and why it's so important that we start to recognize how we unconsciously perpetuate it. Fall in love with Sarah's fierce rebellion as she shares a story about literally prying her braces off of her own teeth with a pair of pliers and why she was so hell bent to make everyone around her stop trying to make her conform to their standards of beauty. This woman is a beautiful force to be reckoned with, taking plus-sized to the mainstream without asking for permission. GO SARAH! She is the co-Founder of Plus Amplified, an organization dedicated to educating and empowering those who live in plus-sized bodies and serves as a catalyst for cultural and internal shifts towards size equity.
