Are you interested or are you committed? This was the question posted by my friend, Melanie Spring the other day. And it really got me thinking about two those simple words that have profound consequences.Running your own business is so sexy from the outside. But if you've ever run your own business, you know that it is messy, full of ups and downs and everything in between. If you haven't run your own business, you probably only see the good parts. You see your friends who are living a life where they have complete control over their schedule. You see them post their wins on social media. You think, "I'm interested! I'm interested in having my own business, working for myself."I'd venture to guess that the majority of people who are looking to grow a business are really interested in building a business. The question is how many of them are actually committed? Are you?Tune into this episode to hear:Why commitment means being okay with getting uncomfortableWhy it's okay to just be interested in things, but only if you're honest with yourselfHow to stay committed even when things aren't going wellLearn more about Pia: No BS LaunchpadNo BS Agency Owners Free Facebook GroupThe Show Your Business Who's Boss Crash Course Start reading the first chapter of my bookPiasilva.comThe 50/25/25 Rule to Profit and Freedom™ Mini CourseResources:Melanie Spring on Instagram

What does it mean to own and share our own stories? Why would other people want to hear our stories?  In today’s episode of About your Mother, we answer those questions with our special guest, Melanie Spring. Melanie is a vibrant speaker, an approachable bad-ass woman, and the facilitator of both personal and brand stories. Today, she shares her struggles and triumphs that made her who she is now. Melanie also discusses what it’s like to own our stories and how everyone should walk into a room and think ‘you’re welcome’.   Break The Barriers Melanie takes us through her favorite memory with her mother and how she managed to break down barriers and reunite with her after being estranged. It wasn’t easy for both of them, but through a letter on Mother’s Day, they were able to reconcile and leave the past behind and move towards a better relationship. She encourages everyone to own their story by taking that one step into sharing one’s authentic self.  “It took a big shift for the two of us together to reunite. We had to accept each other as who we are. We can talk about the hard things and it's not going to ruin our relationship forever. We can sit and cry about it and talk through it and take a minute with it and come back to it. We won’t let it just get swept under the rug again. ” - Melanie Spring Life is About Integration People often say that life is all about balance when on the contrary, it’s always off-balanced. Melanie discusses how life is about integration and figuring out how things can be more aligned, in sync, and woven together in a way that allows everyone to find peace. Especially during the pandemic, everyone’s lives have changed drastically and it has to be about integration and finding out how to make it all work together.  “It's not about working all the time and then finding time to do some yoga and then some writing. It's about sitting down with my husband for lunch for 30 minutes, those kinds of things. It's the integration of all of them. It's us choosing how we want our lives to be integrated. It's us choosing what things we want to say is work versus life. Do I really want to put a clear line on that and do I have to?” - Melanie Spring Own Your Presence Confidence comes when one chooses to be confident. - Melanie SpringClick To Tweet Melanie shares the connection between owning our stories and being confident. It may take a long time to believe, but being able to own one’s confidence and allow oneself to share and own their stories is an incredible journey. Melanie reminds us that not everyone is for everyone, and unapologetically owning your presence is about allowing yourself to exist and become more confident in the space you’re in.  “The constant reminder to not apologize unless you're actually sorry for something. If you did something terrible, please say you're sorry. Otherwise, don't apologize.Click To Tweet "Every time you walk into a room or get don't get back to me within five minutes to do something. Don't apologize and rather say ‘hey, I forgot about that’, ‘here's the thing’, ‘thanks so much for understanding’. There's a big difference in a shift and apology versus you're welcome when it comes to owning your presence.” - Melanie Spring To learn more about Melanie Spring and how you can own your presence and your story, download and listen to this episode.   Bio: INTERNATIONAL KEYNOTE SPEAKER & BRAND STORYTELLER, MELANIE SPRING When we share our stories, we connect with each other at a deeper level. When we share our stories, we connect with each other at a deeper level. When we make friends with our fear, we can step into who we're meant to be.Working as a brand strategist with businesses of all sizes - from big brands like Five Guys to brand new entrepreneurs - for the past two decades, Melanie once drove 7,000 miles in 3 weeks on the Live Your Brand Tour to find out why great brands work. The HUMANS were at the center of everything. Along the way, she noticed that every human had a personal story to share along with their brand story. Diving into the methodology of writing branded talks, she saw an even bigger pattern - people wanted to write their talks, yet focused on what they had to do at their "real job" instead of their bigger impact in the world. She knew she had to change this.As an international keynote speaker, brand storyteller, and public speaking trainer, Melanie took all of her corporate & personal branding experience and created a safe place for Kickass Humans to write the talks they needed to write so they could share it with the world through her course, SPEAK With Confidence. Kris and I were introduced a few years ago by phone and Facebook (thanks, Melanie Spring), but the trip was our first time meeting. And, I can tell you first hand, from two days in the Grand Canyon, that Kris lives and breathes what he preaches. It’s not surprising the Kris was the first one to reach the top of the North Rim after 12 hours of hiking on day one... since he’s competed in 8 full Ironmans. in 1996, Kris started Kris & Co., a manufacturers’ sales agency that represented and sold the coolest of brands to retailers across the northeast US. After running the business for 20 years from zero to 8-figures in revenue, he sold it to Justgot2haveit.com. In 2012, Kris started his coaching business, K2, and committed to being “all-in” on helping other leaders get similar results. He says his calling is “Empowering Better” in CEOs, Entrepreneurs, and their people to Kickstart Clarity to be better versions of themselves. K2 is hyper-focused on pushing you past your limits and defying your expectations. And you’ll hear that same enthusiasm in our conversation today. Today’s topic is larger than sales and marketing. It’s about beginning with the end in mind and getting clear on what your goals are and what you’re working towards. I like to joke with my clients that it takes exactly the same amount of work to build a business that you love as one that you hate. The difference is just your decision. So ask yourself what you’re working towards in your career, life and family. Can you clearly articulate it? Or, are you just looking to take advantage of whatever comes your way like so many people see as their only option? If you’re interested in being more intentional about making awesome happen in your life, check out Kris’s process for kickstarting clarity. "Brand storytelling." It's one of those concepts that sounded so deep and powerful when everyone first started talking about it. Sadly, it wasn't long before it was labeled as yet another well-meaning phrase that was completely ruined by marketers. (As the joke goes, "marketers ruin everything," right?) Regardless of its "buzzword-y" reputation, however, brand storytelling matters in a very big way. Because the brands that know how to tell their story effectively and authentically will always outperform those that don't. Period.

I was never a child prodigy. I didn't grow up being excellent at gymnastics. (You should see me trying to do a forward roll.) I can't really play any instruments, except the recorder with my nose. And while I can say, “I love you because you're a tall and handsome man” in Cantonese, my language skills are a bit rubbish. I've never been really good at anything. Just okayish at a lot of things. If I were a superhero I'd have an ‘M' on my cape for Mediocre Woman! (And no, I'm not being self-deprecating here. I love me. But I also know my strengths and weaknesses.) But looking at some entrepreneurs out there in social media land, you'd think you need a superpower to succeed, whether it's inventing your own brand of yoghurt when you were eight or having a chain of poodle massage shops by age 22. We've been sold the idea that to be a success you need to be horrendously attractive, a chino-wearing supernerd or someone with a beard. (I'm 99% convinced Branson would be nothing if he was cleanly shaven.) Oh, and it also helps if you're bald. I'm none of these things. But I quickly realised it was important to appreciate my superpowers, however boring and pathetic they seemed. (Yes, I know ‘appreciating my superpowers' might sound a bit ‘woo woo,' but bear with me.) We all have superpowers. And if we can identify them, they can really help make our business a success. Tune in to learn: In this episode we cover: What are superpowers? Why are they important? How do you find out what your superpowers are? Who would play Kate and Melanie in a movie? What are Kate's superpowers? What are Melanie's superpowers? Are superpowers part of our nature or does it come down to nurture? What to do if your superpowers are bad things?

Being a badass and branding go hand in hand, but doing business and thinking about the humans involved in it on both sides of the deal has a tendency to get lost in the shuffle. On episode 17 brand strategist Melanie Spring joins Woj and Bobby to talk about her cross-country journey to uncover the lesser known stories of businesses across America. Whether big or small, every organisation has to work hard to connect with the people who work for them and the people who buy from them. A company's branding is the essence of that connection and Melanie shows us how she can guide individuals and businesses through the processes of knowing, growing and managing their brand identity.

“You have to find people who like you but aren’t like you.” This is a mistake many brands make. They look for customers just like them — with their specific interests and characteristics — instead of people who like your brand and what it stands for. Melanie Spring is a speaker, facilitator, and brand strategist at Branded Confidence.  We discussed community, culture, and more on this week’s episode of the On Brand podcast presented by Twenty20. About Melanie Spring When you ask a brand strategist how she defines her brand and she says “Approachable Badass”, you know you’ve found someone who can help you define your own brand. Melanie Spring was put here to get you outside of your box and firmly in your purpose – professionally and personally. Melanie runs Branded Confidence as an international speaker and facilitator – bringing her charisma and confidence to humans worldwide. She’s so dedicated to her purpose that she once drove 7,000 miles in 3 weeks to find out why great brands work. Episode Highlights Wait — 7,000 miles in 3 weeks? I had to ask Melanie about this first. “Five and a half years ago I was frustrated with my life so I took a road trip to learn about brands.” And being a brand practitioner herself, she gave it a name and branded it! “The Live Your Brand Tour” led Melanie from DC to California and back again, visiting a variety of brands from Timbuk2 and Chobani (check out our podcast episode featuring Chobani) to a jewelry store in San Luis Obispo. She documented her travels and the brand stories she uncovered in Entrepreneur magazine. Knowing your humans. Many of her stories focused on brands building community and culture. But what if you don’t know your humans? “Most haven’t asked. If you just ask them they’ll tell you everything.” Grandma’s still not sure … When being an “approachable badass” is part of you’re bound to raise some eyebrows. And sometimes they are your grandmother’s eyebrows! Melanie joked that her grandma said, “She’s still not okay with the ‘ass word.’ The ‘f-word’ is off limits because then mom can’t share it with her church friends! But brands need a bit of an edge.” Melanie specifically uses the word ‘badass’ to help screen potential clients. “If you can’t handle the word ‘ass’ you won’t like working with me!” What brand has made Melanie smile recently? “I just moved from DC to Denver and I love REI.” Melanie then shared their recent #OptOutside campaign. “If you can get an everyday human like me to giggle, I’m all over that kind of stuff.” To learn more, go to brandedconfidence.com and kickasshumansclub.com.
