The Leadership Enigma

The Leadership Enigma

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 14, 2022 32:05

James Ryan is the President and CEO of Mercedes Benz Financial Services in Canada and this episode is part of our CEO series.  James started his life as a musician, studying Comparative Literature and then moving and working in Germany as an intern for Mercedes Benz in 1995. James has had multiple roles within the organisation leading to his current role as CEO and President responsible for a $5bn portfolio. James and I explore how his early years as a musician (drummer) have crafted his approach to leadership which has allowed James to be very thoughtful and deliberate as regards his leadership, impact and legacy. As a CEO James is humble enough to realise that he can't be expert in all that he oversees, and his style allows him to empower others whereby he can lead by asking questions and increasing his own awareness in order to be the strategic as opposed to the technical operator. James understood the real power in leading by questioning and with that, James' style of leadership was underpinned by his ability to listen and really hear others. The Post pandemic environment challenged James's leadership and questioned his own thinking and norms when it came to the issue of physical office space and flexibility for his teams. James asked his staff a series of questions and quickly understand they need to be a Purpose Driven Organisation and that the office space was not to simply facilitate work but was necessary to create collaboration, connection and camaraderie. As part of James' focus on listening, he carried out a series of ‘stay' interviews to complement what they were hearing in the ‘exit' interviews. The results were fascinating as it helped the organisation understand what people were motivated about including, purpose, personal growth and the importance of culture which has never been so important in post pandemic environment.  James continues to listen intently to his people which has allowed him to consider how he can measure his leadership by focusing on four key components. 1.    Engagement: the experience that leaders create for their people. 2.    Involvement: allowing people to own the whole not just their part3.    Trust: a critical component especially post pandemic as people ask themselves if they trust their leader and the organisation within which they work. The higher the trust the higher the performance as a business. 4.    Values: values drive value and must be non-negotiable and embedded in all that you do.James also shares the two questions that he always asks himself when he considers an opportunity in his life. Can I learn something? Can I bring something unique to the table? Enjoy this great episode.

In this episode of Culture by Design, Timothy R. Clark is joined by Bobbye Sweat, Director of Diversity and Inclusion for First Command Financial Services in Forth Worth, Texas. Bobbye shares her experiences in seven different industries as she has worked to meet people where they are. She explains that if you really care, you'll be authentic. That foundation of inclusion makes all the difference. Bobbye's origin story (02:00). Raised by a single dad in Arkansas, Bobbye learned the importance of relationships and caring for others from her father, “Mr. Mom”. That one lesson changed the way she approached interactions for the rest of her life. How Bobbye got her professional start (13:30). When Bobbye worked at Telecom during her junior year of college, she was encouraged to take a full-time job in the engineering field when all she wanted was to be a teacher. Her mentor helped her see the opportunities in front of her, which jumpstarted her professional career. Bobbye took her dad's words to heart when he said: If you have the attitude and aptitude for learning, you can do anything you want to. How do you leverage and take advantage of opportunities? (18:00). Bobbye tells the story of how she has been able to work in seven different industries during her professional career. She explains that when people enter new environments with enough support and encouragement, they thrive. They put their head down and get to work. From phones, to airplanes, to DEI (24:45). While Bobbye was working at Boeing, she noticed that while the work atmosphere was diverse, people weren't talking. She wondered: how do we get people to look at each other and leverage our differences? As a pioneer in the DEI space, inclusion solidified everything that Bobbye had learned in her career. She learned to link the passion to the purpose of the work. A foundation of inclusion makes a world of difference (30:00). Bobbye explains that organizations that are truly inclusive will enjoy its byproducts: diversity, equity, innovation, and other business outcomes. When inclusion is the primary focus and foundation, you can get your footing and build from there. No organization can commit itself to a diverse workforce without an inclusive culture, where policy and practice works for everyone. Leaving a legacy (31:30). When asked what she wants to pass on to the next generation, Bobbye responds that authentic caring is her main focus and goal. As Theodore Roosevelt said: “People don't care what you know until they know that you care.” When we're willing to meet organizations where they are, culture can change. Meet unkindness with kindness (34:30). Bobbye says: pick your battles. Sometimes you'll have to remove yourself from situations, sometimes you need to speak up. This balance of forgiveness and standing your ground is one that Bobbye has learned well. Ask yourself: “What did I do to serve someone else today?”Maintaining authentic caring through intent and motivation (39:10). Bobbye shares her practical tips on how to care authentically. Sometimes it means doing the opposite of what people would expect you to do. Creating a speak-up culture (44:00). People continue to ask the question: “Will I have a voice in this position?” Bobbye explains that you can't expect an organization to magically produce a speak-up culture when it is not designed to sustain one. You have to meet the organizations where they are. About Our Guest:Bobbye Sweat is the Director of Diversity and Inclusion for First Command Financial Services in Fort Worth, TX.Bobbye joined First Command in August 2020, bringing over 16 years of Diversity & Inclusion leadership experience to her current role.  Prior to First Command, Bobbye was D&I Integration Director for Hallmark Cards; the Head of the Diversity & Inclusion at Mercedes-Benz Financial Services; Senior Manager Diversity & Inclusion at JC Penney; Associate Director Diversity & Inclusion at AT&T and Senior Manager Network Services & Customer Care Operations at The Boeing Company.Bobbye received her MBA in Total Quality Management from City University of Seattle. [vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] Who can you trust when buying a car? This is a very complex question. Certainly, the easy answer, the one that speaks to our monkey brain, is to seek the counsel of your parents. After all, if they kept you alive for the last 18 years, they have some credibility of knowing what's right, and therefore you trust them implicitly. Another answer would be to trust technology. Examples of trust in technology are visiting websites like Kelly Blue Book, Edmunds, and Truecar, where they've amassed copious amounts of data points to provide you with trusted guidance. Other examples of trust in technology are to use apps. Seventy episodes ago, we discussed an app called AutoGravity which allows you to shop for cars, apply for credit, and know your payment all from  your phone so that there are no surprises when you arrive at the dealership. There is a common thread to these trusted sources. They remain agnostic about your purchase. It is ironic, to some degree, that trust is embedded in sources who don't care about your business versus those who do care about your business. This is the conundrum of automotive dealers where agnostic sources of car buying are trusted more than the dealer. And let's be honest. Both customers and dealers play this game of poker, trying to only disclose tidbits of information so that one player can eventually go all in. Tune in to hear about this crazy game of poker between customers and dealers. Rinaldi Halim is currently serving as Dealer Principal of Los Angeles Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram and Managing Partner of Downey Nissan and Nissan of Tustin. Prior to these roles, Mr. Halim served as Executive Manager of Nissan of Duarte and a number of leadership positions with Mossy Automotive Group, San Diego. Mr. Halim is frequently sought by top leadership at Nissan North America and FCA for his insights and operating processes which have afforded him and his dealerships consistent achievement in sales volume and other measures. He holds recognition as Downey Nissan California’s number one Nissan dealer and LACDJR FCA’s fastest growing dealership in CA. Mr. Halim has won five consecutive Nissan Top 50 Global Awards of excellence. Mr. Halim resides in Irvine, CA, with his wife and daughter. Chuck Schofield is vice president of Sales and Dealer Development at AutoGravity. He and his team handle nationwide, dealer-facing engagement, recruitment and customer service. Chuck spent 27 years at Daimler Financial Services and 12 years with Daimler Truck Financial. He has also served as director of Business Vehicle Finance at Chrysler Financial and western region manager for Mercedes-Benz Financial Services. In those roles, he was responsible for managing U.S. finance products and services sales and cultivating and maintaining relationships with Mercedes-Benz, Dodge, Chrysler, Jeep, Ram, Freightliner and Western Star dealership personnel.
