We'd be much less happier—or perhaps, less entertained—without it. Mythology permeates our country: George Washington axing the cherry tree, the sweet but apocryphal story of the first Thanksgiving, stacking back issues of The New Yorker near our desk with the false implication we've read any of them.Here's another one: the Pilgrims didn't first land at Plymouth Rock. In fact, the Rock itself—yes, there is a literal rock—had nothing to do with the Pilgrims. It marks a spot long claimed to be the landing area of the Mayflower, the Dutch cargo fluyt that carried the Pilgrims across the Atlantic, but the claim was originally and erroneously made by 94 year-old Thomas Flaunce more than 120 years after the landing. Flaunce, of course, was not an eyewitness to this.And the Pilgrims never mentioned the Rock. They would be very confused by the importance placed on it today and may consider us all a bit weird (actually, it's guaranteed they would consider us all weird).No, in reality, the Pilgrims first anchored in the harbor of what is now known as Provincetown, a gorgeous seaside community of less than 4,000 residents at the southern tip of Massachusetts.The other myth about the Pilgrims that was beaten into our heads from an early age is that they absconded from Europe in pursuit of true religious freedom, a core tenet of the American Experiment. But in truth, the Pilgrims were religious conservatives who wanted to be completely separate from the spiritual influence of outsiders — perhaps “aspirational purists” might be a more apt description. They weren't seeking true religious freedom for all.The area where they first anchored already had residents: the Nauset people, closely related neighbors of the better-known Wampanoag, who were almost certainly the opposite of the Pilgrims in terms of social attitudes. Although there isn't substantial scholarship on the topic, it's fairly likely that LGBTQ people were accepted on that land long before the Pilgrims arrived with their strict outlook on gender, sexuality, and family.And so, it's quite fitting that Provincetown is today considered one of the premier vacation destinations for LGBTQ families. The season reaches its celebratory apex every year with LGBTQ Family Week, organized by the organization Family Equality, this latest being its 30th year of celebration.For three decades, LGBTQ families have traveled from throughout the nation—some crossing an ocean from other countries—to enjoy what can only be described as one of the safest places in America (and the world) for the LGBTQ community.During a long, wonderful walk through town, I ran into a friend and caught up on life. She and her wife have been bringing their son ever since he was a baby. He's now 15. He's grown up surrounded by love and joy in Provincetown.Last month, Nissan (North America) reached out and asked if I would join them as a guest for the festivities. They offered to cover travel and lodging, only requesting that I write about my experience if the spirit so moved me. I was not paid, nor would I have accepted payment.My sole motivation was quite simple: while anti-LGBTQ laws are being passed in dozens of states and children are being attacked and books are being banned and fear campaigns are being waged against trans people by elected officials, I wanted to draw attention to companies who are walking the walk (or driving the drive, in this case).If you're pleasantly surprised that Nissan is so invested in LGBTQ equality, allow yourself to be further delighted. As a number of other large corporations, from Target to Tractor Supply, have quietly moved away from LGBTQ outreach in the midst of backlash from anti-LGBTQ extremists, Nissan has doubled down.For years, they've achieved high marks in the Corporate Equality Index, an annual report released by the Human Rights Campaign to assess the commitment of a wide range of companies to LGBTQ equality. And this year, they increased their sponsorship of LGBTQ Family Week, desiring to send a message that all families deserve and should expect kindness, respect, and dignity.Of course, I immediately agreed to join.There are two ways to get to Provincetown (“P-town") after landing: you can take a long drive from Boston or catch a much shorter ride on the Bay State Cruise Company ferry across Massachusetts Bay. I took the ferry, and it was lovely. It was about 90 minutes, but it felt like half an hour, I kid you not. I spent the week with the lovely group from Nissan going whale-watching, singing karaoke (enthusiastically and badly and hilariously), laughing at a drag show based on the Devil Wears Prada, eating at several of the many charming restaurants in town, and generally enjoying the festive and welcome atmosphere. And that was all great, to be sure. It was wonderful. But the parts of the trip that stick with me most were seeing hundreds of LGBTQ families gathered together in such safe and joyous celebrations. There was Family Night at Motta Field, in which many a parent could be observed cleaning sticky fingers with wet wipes and cheering on their kiddos dancing in front of the stage and toddlers walking around with watermelon wedges bigger than their heads. Everyone just seemed happy and at peace. Nissan's Don Hayes delivered brief and moving remarks during the gathering, which included this heartfelt offering that got huge applause:“You know, there was a time when I didn't feel comfortable to be myself at work, concerned for my ability to advance…but I'm happy to report, that is no longer the case.”Nissan also displayed their Ariya, an electric crossover, which I only mention here because it's truly a gorgeous piece of machinery. (Again: they are not paying me to say this. I just think it's pretty.)And, of course, there was the Parade. Oh, the Parade. If you haven't experienced the Provincetown Family Week Parade, you're missing out. I've been to countless Pride parades in my life, and there's something particularly special about this one. LGBTQ families, as far as the eye can see, who weren't so much marching as they were joyously promenading through downtown, proud parents and energetic kiddos, amused and cheering tourists on the sides, a collection of excited humanity slowly enveloping the streets. Love upon love upon love.At the Parade's end, I caught up with Alexis Cantor, who recently took the helm as President & CEO of Family Equality. I had seen Ms. Cantor around all week, always spreading good cheer and having a kind word and smile for everyone she came across.I asked her what Family Week means to her. She said:“Being surrounded by queer joy and a sense of belonging and families just feeling safe, protected, loved, and celebrated is all we can ask for… I would remind people that we need joy with our justice, and at the end of the day, families come here because they don't always feel safe. They do have worry in their hometowns, and here, they can find their community… everyone gets to show up authentically as they are… we're here to celebrate it all.”At the end of our conversation, she summed it up about as well as anyone could: “How can you not want to create a world where every single child, every single adult, every single human, gets to feel that unconditional love of family?”I couldn't agree more, and as I headed back to Boston on the ferry, I found myself immediately longing to return to P-town and feel unreservedly safe and accepted, walking its streets and simply existing as myself, beautifully and unapologetically and in communion with no shortage of kind souls.My everlasting gratitude to the folks at Nissan and Family Equality for offering a bit of heaven in a time when so many desperately need it.I only wish everyone could have that, too. In this episode of America on the Road, we try to answer a question posed by our two road test cars, the 2024 Volvo S90 Recharge and the Hyundai Ioniq 6. The Volvo is a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and the Hyundai is a battery-powered pure EV. Of course, they aren't in the same segment, but looking at them can help answer the question that is on a lot of car buyers' minds right now — should I purchase a plug-in hybrid or a battery-electric? We examine both that question and the pluses and minuses of each car individually in this week's vehicle test segment of the show. Leading the news this week, Consumer Reports says that retailers across the country could be the salvation of the troubled electric-car infrastructure that is severely limiting EV growth. CR posits that the more than a quarter million big box stores across the country should take it upon themselves to install public chargers to remedy one of biggest reasons average consumers are rejecting EVs. The only problem with that is it flies in the face of the findings of an AutoPacific study that describes what EV owners want in recharging stations. It turns out they don't want the big box store experience. What they want is more in line with what they get at a … well, we'll tell you the rest in the news segment. Meanwhile, one highly touted electric vehicle company is looking for salvation of its own. It's grabbing desperately for a lifeline as it tries to stave off bankruptcy. We'll tell you more about that and who the company's possible savior is. Plus,we'll give you some details on why Apple finally has pulled the plug on its once-promising Apple Car development program. Aubrey Walker III was trained at the Portfolio Center, School for Creative Communication Arts in Atlanta, GA. In his first year of the two-year program, Aubrey was recruited as a Copywriter with MATLOCK, working on Publix, BellSouth and BMW. In 2000, Aubrey joined CHWA in Oakland, California as a Copywriter, working directly under Carol H. Williams, the only African American woman in the Advertising Hall of Fame. While under her tutelage Aubrey quickly became the lead writer on Coors Light. Not long after, Aubrey moved to Chicago as an ACD at Burrell. His duties there were McDonalds, P&G, Heineken, Bacardi and Verizon. For the TIDE brand Aubrey created the award winning global spot, “Nostalgia Dad.” Today, it's still one of the highest ranked spot in the history of P&G. In 2006 Aubrey accepted a position with The TRUE Agency a subsidiary of TBWA in Los Angeles, California. His client duties were primarily on Nissan North America. In 2010 Aubrey accepted an Associate Creative Director role on the Jeep brand at Globalhue. There he led the team on the Call of Duty and Jeep partnership. In 2012 Aubrey became a Creative Director at commonground in Chicago, IL. There he led the Nike High School basketball account, Nike Marathon, Nissan North America and Bacardi USA Brands. In 2015 Aubrey became the Creative Director of Ideation and Content at GMR in New Berlin, WI. His accounts included, the NFL, Chobani, Miller Lite, Amazon, Pepsi, Johnsonville Brats, TuneIn and Lincoln Financial. And in 2016 Aubrey joined MKTG Chicago as VP Creative Director over Nike, Dick's Sporting Goods, Maven, Gatorade, Propel Water and Beats By Dre. Aubrey then opened his own company, TEACHERS NEVER LIKED US where their main client was Four Loko. In 2019, Aubrey received an offer to become the first Executive Creative Director of OKRP in Chicago where his role would be to manage the creative department on accounts such as Illinois Lottery, Ace Hardware, Cars.com, Nerds, P&G, Illinois Dept of Tourism, Home Chef & Black Shop Friday. Currently, Aubrey is the ECD of OKRP and Founder and CCO of a minority owned start-up production and creative agency, PUTNEY. Along with his partner, Elena Robinson.

In the new Ariya electric crossover, Nissan opted for a button-less dashboard over the ever-growing tablet-sized screen. Their goal is a clean and calming dashboard experience rather than a wide array of buttons and complicated menus. By creating a smooth, haptic feedback control panel with only the most important functions, consumers can focus on their main task: driving. . So, how does haptic feedback work? The control panel in the Ariya reacts to touch, communicating through fingertip vibrations. To adjust settings like climate controls and drive modes, drivers interact with a familiar set of icons. However, because the points of interaction are felt and heard rather than seen, drivers can remain focused on the road ahead. . We sat down with Adam Tacey, Senior Manager, Nissan Marketability and Testing at Nissan North America, to discuss the company's new generation of haptic feedback controls and the critical relationship between design and function. . Capcom is a Japan-based publisher of blockbuster games detected a breach During the end of 2020, Capcom said its personal, as well as corporate data, was compromised. A group called Ragnar Locker claimed responsibility and said they had downloaded more than 1TB of corporate data, including banking details, contracts, proprietary data, emails and more. Gaming is increasingly becoming a target for all types of cyberattacks. In 2012, a 2004 Infiniti QX56 SUV driven by Solomon Mathenge t-boned a Dodge Caravan in Los Angeles, resulting in the death of the driver, Hilario's wife, and daughters Stephanie, 4 and Hilda, 6. Solomon insisted that his brakes were not working properly. Originally charged with three counts of vehicular manslaughter, Solomon later joined the case as an additional plaintiff, separately represented, against Nissan North America, Inc., due to the discovery of a history of braking issues in Infiniti vehicles. Nissan knew as early as 2003 that select models were equipped with a defective braking software with a "delta stroke sensor," which unnecessarily activated the car's optimized hydraulic braking. Despite this knowledge, Nissan failed to recall the vehicle or notify all vehicle owners. Jerome witnessed first-hand how lawyers could make a difference in people's lives. The trial lawyers who represented his family successfully held the responsible party accountable for the tragedy, and he knew then that he wanted to be a trial lawyer. His road toward achieving that goal was not easy, but hard work has never been an obstacle for him. Jerome was born in Alexander City, Alabama - a hard-working, cotton mill town that taught him the values of persistence, keeping his word, and doing his best. The lessons learned from his community propelled Jerome to become the first college graduate in his family. Chuck Searles has played an active role in the automotive service and training community for 28 years. He is a proud supporter of the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) and is a member of the ASE Training Managers Council (ATMC). He was born in Alaska and spent childhood years on the North Slope in small rural villages. After his Fathers retirement from the Alaska educational system, the Searles family relocated to the Big Island of Hawaii, where Chuck attended high school. After high school, he attended post-secondary technical school in Phoenix, Arizona, and then moved back to Alaska to begin a career in the automotive industry. Chuck served as a Line Technician, Service Advisor, and eventually Shop Foreman at Nissan Dealerships in Fairbanks, Alaska, and Phoenix, Arizona. He was then hired by Nissan North America as a Technical Support Specialist in Los Angeles, CA. Over the next 19 years, he served several Sales and Technical Training roles, including Sales Training Senior Planner, Technical Training Operations Manager, and Instructional Design Manager. He is currently the President of the Automotive Management Institute (AMi). Certainly, the easy answer, the one that speaks to our monkey brain, is to seek the counsel of your parents. After all, if they kept you alive for the last 18 years, they have some credibility of knowing what's right, and therefore you trust them implicitly. Another answer would be to trust technology. Examples of trust in technology are visiting websites like Kelly Blue Book, Edmunds, and Truecar, where they've amassed copious amounts of data points to provide you with trusted guidance. Other examples of trust in technology are to use apps. Seventy episodes ago, we discussed an app called AutoGravity which allows you to shop for cars, apply for credit, and know your payment all from  your phone so that there are no surprises when you arrive at the dealership. There is a common thread to these trusted sources. They remain agnostic about your purchase. It is ironic, to some degree, that trust is embedded in sources who don't care about your business versus those who do care about your business. This is the conundrum of automotive dealers where agnostic sources of car buying are trusted more than the dealer. And let's be honest. Both customers and dealers play this game of poker, trying to only disclose tidbits of information so that one player can eventually go all in. Nissan North America, Inc. (9th Cir. 2019) 932 F.3d 811: The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals held that the Plaintiff’s theory of liability—that Nissan’s manufacture and concealment of a defective clutch system injured class members at the time of sale—is consistent with his proposed recovery based on the benefit of the bargain. The dealing with mistakes culture in Japan is definitely in the tough love category. This makes innovation and engendering creativity difficult here because, the penalties for failure far outweigh the rewards for success.   Welcome back to this weekly edition every Tuesday of "THE Cutting Edge Japan Business Show" I am your host Dr. Greg Story, President of Dale Carnegie Training Japan and we are bringing the show to you from our High Performance Center in Akasaka in Minato-ku, the business center of Tokyo. Well, where is this Cutting Edge?  For all of us, the quality of our people is the cutting edge for success in Japan. Before we get into this week's topic, here is what caught my attention lately. Japan's exports as at October are up 14% on last year.  Japan is doing well with exports of vehicles, electronics, and machinery.  China replaced the US as Japan's largest export market in October as exports were up 26%.  Imports from China also increased 14%.  President Trump won't be happy that Japan's trade surplus with the US is up 11%., mainly driven by chemicals and machinery. Import from the US were up but only by 3.1% mainly for fish, soybeans, coal, liquid petroleum gas and iron ore.  Nissan has said it is planning to build a new factory in the US, to keep up with the local demand.  Their existing plants in Tenessee and Mississippi are “maxed out” according to Jose Munoz, Chairman of Nissan North America. Nissan's sales in the US have increased by 70% over the last 6 years. This is episode number 13and we are talking about Dealing With Your Own Mistakes Soredewa ikimasho, so let's get going.     We want people to fail!  That's right, because we all know that we are the product today of all of our accumulated failures.  We have learnt what works and does not work by trying something, failing and then adjusting the way we do things.    American Basketball Coach John Wooden once said, "Failure is not fatal, but failure to change might be." The obvious point he was trying to convey is that everyone makes mistakes and fails. It is what you do after the mistake or failure that makes all the difference.   This attitude to mistakes is particularly relevant here in Japan.  Errors are viewed very dimly in Japan.  In fact, the fear of making an error is so strong, that people are very cautious about anything new or unfamiliar, as the mistake incidence is likely to be higher.   If you grow up in Japan, you will have had this idea drummed into your head from an early age.  I encountered this when I was working with a visiting Japanese film crew, doing a shoot for a magazine image, as part of a product launch.    We were down on the beach in Surfers Paradise on the Gold Coast and the second camera assistant accidently dropped a completed film canister in the sand, as he was changing film rolls. Without a moment's hesitation the shortish director reached up and gave this 190cm, 100 kilo young guy a most tremendous whack across the head, followed by a severe tongue lashing for his error.   The dealing with mistakes culture in Japan is definitely in the tough love category. This makes innovation and engendering creativity difficult here because, the penalties for failure far outweigh the rewards for success.   As leaders we need to set the scene that mistakes happen because the creative process is messy and involves a lot of trial and error.  The team are watching like a hawk about how mistakes are treated and take their cues from there. Lee Iacocca is famous for how he treated a multi million dollar failure, by one of his marketing executives at Chrysler. It was no small change and the executive in question presumed he was being called to the boss's office to be given his marching orders.  Upon entering the office he said, “I suppose you are going to fire me”.  Iacocca said. “Fire you! We just spent millions educating you”. Is that how you see you own mistakes – part of your education or do you beat yourself up?  Here are 5 ways to shake off your mistakes and move forward to success. Brush it off No one is perfect. Once in a while everyone makes mistakes, it's going to happen. Don't spend time worrying about it, cooperate with the inevitable and focus on what you are doing.  This is how we learn, so see a mistake as a stage in your education.  In high tech environments the mantra is “fail faster”, because they know how important it is to try new things when seeking breakthroughs. Analysing the reason for the mistake, it is often because we are dealing with permanent overload and are always rushing. We don't take the time to check because were are too wrapped up in production mode.  Count mistakes as a cost of business and try to move ahead and reduce that cost factor. Find out when we come back from the break Welcome back. Don't fuss about trifles Forget the small stuff. Perfecting something pointless or of low value makes no sense and adds little to the organisation's efforts.  If you can mentally stop obsessing about the smaller mistakes, you'll be more focused and catch the larger ones before they happen.  Accuracy is a key thing, in some areas, so we need to flick the switch to know when we are entering a key area. When we get there we need to slow down and go for perfection for a few minutes in the day.  We don't have to be like this the whole day and beat ourselves up if we aren't. Don't worry about the past Shake off your mistakes and move on. Don't live in yesterday (or tomorrow for that matter).  Forget about what happened, no matter how silly or embarrassing. By letting go of the past it will help you focus on your current task. “Mistakes are building blocks for enlightenment” – think of them that way, get on the front foot and start pushing forward.  Everyone is so tied up in themselves, they soon forget about you and refocus on themselves again.  We might have provided some inadvertent mild relief but it doesn't dwell in their minds. Like bad news in the media, the next day the newspaper is embracing the fish bones, vegetable peels and other garbage. The world has moved on and so should we. Profit from your mistakes So you've made a mistake, now figure out why you made the mistake, make a note and move on. Making even a mental note will help remind you to be more careful next time the situation comes up.  Ironically, some of the greatest breakthroughs in science and technology have come from mistakes rather than intention. In brainstorming sessions, the ridiculous ideas spark the genius ideas.  You might not have gotten one without the other.  See your own mistakes as sparks and catalysts to a better future. Rest before you get tired Many times silly mistakes are made simply because you are tired. Tiredness combined with making too much haste makes for a nasty combination. When we are tired, errors will pop up like weeds after rain.  Make sure that you get enough sleep and sometimes it is better to tell yourself “go slower!” or “time for a break”. Understand your best work rhythm. Winston Churchill did his best writing in the early hours of the morning after midnight, propped up with cigars and whisky.  Others are at their most creative in the early part of the day up until lunchtime. If you know that about yourself, hive off that Golden Time and devote it to the creative work you need to be doing. Our errors may occur with greater frequency because we are asking our natural biorhythms to work at cross-purposes to the task required.  We should always seek the best alignment between our talents, our energy and the nature of the task to be completed. Continuing with the world of basketball, Michael Jordan provides a great final quote about failing: “I've missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I've lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I've been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed.  I've failed over and over again in my life.  And that is why I succeed”. Mistakes are rarely “game over” in business.  Remember, this is a marathon not a sprint.  We need consistency, reliability and stamina.  Reacting to mistakes is a more critical skill than eliminating them. You will never eliminate them all, so defining what comes next is more important. While integrating related research and education across Ohio State’s academic units, she also helps coordinate Ohio State’s involvement as the primary research partner for Smart Columbus, a $140 million program to transform Central Ohio into the nation’s premier transportation innovation region. Carla is a leader in engineering and vehicle program management, with 35 years of experience in the automotive industry. Before joining Ohio State, she served as senior vice president of research and development for Nissan North America. She was responsible for vehicle engineering and development operations in Michigan, Arizona, Mexico and Brazil, managing a $500 million budget and 2,500 employees. In this edition of our podcast, we present a telephone interview with Cheryl Procter-Rogers, president of the Public Relations Society of America, the world's largest professional organization for public relations practitioners. In a February speech to PR students at Ball State University, Procter-Rogers addressed three critical issues for shaping the future of the public relations profession. Diversity, ethics and risk are becoming increasingly critical to the financial success of businesses, she said. Cheryl also spoke to the students about the dangers of succumbing to "confirmation bias," a kind of complacency in which mass media audiences only pay attention to news and opinion content that matches their own belief system closely. With more than 25 years experience in the public relations arena, Cheryl Procter-Rogers is currently corporate affairs director for Home Box Office (HBO), where she is responsible for the development and implementation of public relations and integrated marketing communications strategies across 11 states in the Midwest. Before joining HBO, she worked as a communications consultant in the Chicago area, assisting such clients as Sears Roebuck & Co., Nissan North America, Inc., Allstate Insurance Company, McDonald's Corporation, and HBO in developing and implementing internal and external communications strategies supporting critical business objectives. Cheryl holds an M.B.A. from Keller Graduate School of Management, Chicago, IL; a B.S. in English and Journalism from Bradley University, Peoria, IL; an E-Business Certificate from the School of Business Administration, Loyola University Chicago; and a professional designation in public relations from UCLA Extension. She was the youngest member of the Los Angeles Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) in Los Angeles to earn the Accreditation in Public Relations (APR), and the first African American woman to earn that honor there. In 2000, Cheryl became the youngest member ever to be inducted into the Public Relations Society of America's College of Fellows, a distinction held by a little more than 400 individuals in the field of public relations. She, along with Dr. Debra Miller, was the first African-Americans inducted into the College. She was the first African-American elected as president of the 500-member Chicago Chapter of PRSA. She is a charter member and past president of the Black Public Relations Society of Southern California.
