I believe journalist, photographer and all-around producer Andy Isaacson has found ways to lean into his own curiosity, creating vehicles for the rest us to come along for the ride – in one case, literally. For him a good day sparks his curiosity -- a thought that came to him for the first time in this conversation. (Hurrah for asking about what makes for a good days!) We talk about why it's so important to meet people where they are; the intersections of respect, fairness, empathy and rigorous investigation; resourcefulness; and why stories are a form of currency. Lee Horton delves into the critical importance of understanding both the destination and the starting point when creating a vision for an organisation. He emphasises that while many companies focus on their aspirational goals, they often overlook the current state of their teams and the challenges they face. Lee provides insightful questions to help leaders engage with their teams, uncovering what is working well, what hinders progress, and what support is needed to bridge the gap between where they are and where they want to be. KEY TAKEAWAYS Understanding the Current State: Before setting a vision or goal, it's crucial to assess where the organisation currently stands. Knowing the starting point allows for a more effective strategy to reach the desired destination. Engagement Through Questions: Engaging team members by asking targeted questions about their current challenges, frustrations, and what works well can provide valuable insights. This helps in understanding their perspective and meeting them where they are. Three Key Aspects of Vision: When working on a vision, consider three components: where you want to go, where you are now, and how to bridge the gap between the two. This holistic approach ensures that everyone is aligned and understands the journey. Focus on Empowerment and Support: Identifying moments when team members felt supported and empowered can help recreate those conditions. Understanding what keeps them engaged is essential for fostering a motivated workforce. Stop, Start, Continue Framework: Utilise the stop, start, continue framework to evaluate current practices. Determine what should be stopped (hindrances), what should be continued (successful practices), and what new actions should be initiated to achieve the vision. BEST MOMENTS "Rather than talking about the destination, the word you want to get to, the big goal for next year, five years, 10 years, I want to talk to you about where are you today?" "What are your biggest challenges or frustrations that you face in your daily work?" "When people feel like and are genuinely listened to, cared for and supported, then they will give that back." "Don't just focus on the future. Absolutely start with the ending mind. But also take a moment to understand where we are today." "You can only understand where they are starting from if you meet them where they are." How can empathy combined with playful banter transform relationships in personal and professional settings? In this episode, Rebecca Greene interviews Jill Robin Payne, a seasoned mental health professional with over 40 years of experience. Jill shares her innovative approach to empathy, blending it with lighthearted banter to deepen connections and foster healthier relationships. The conversation spans from parenting tips to enhancing workplace dynamics, emphasizing the importance of fun, communication, and understanding in every interaction. Key Takeaways: ➔ Empathy with Banter: Jill's unique concept combines empathy with playful chit-chat, making interactions lighter and more engaging while building deeper connections. ➔ Balancing Technology: Excessive screen time diminishes face-to-face empathy; set boundaries to maintain meaningful interactions. ➔ Parenting with Fun: Infuse fun into structured activities with children to foster a bond, such as gamifying chores or finding shared hobbies. ➔ Workplace Relationships: Improve communication by mirroring colleagues' and supervisors' styles, focusing on creating win-win scenarios. ➔ Empathy vs. Sympathy: Empathy is about feeling with someone, creating connection, while sympathy often involves feeling for someone, leading to disconnection. Memorable Quotes: "Empathy with banter helps us see the third side of the coin—it fosters understanding, emotional intelligence, and social skills." "Make your environment motivate you to be the person you want to be and get where you want to go in life." Renee Baribeau had a profound experience that inspired this episode. We encounter countless people each day, moving through life at such a rapid pace that it becomes difficult to pause and engage in true heart-to-heart exchanges. Too often, we place labels on others—calling them ignorant, lazy, or mentally ill—without ever stopping to connect with them on a human level. But when we take the time to engage authentically, we tap into a deep well of truth, empathy, and shared humanity. Viewing others as archetypes or one-dimensional characters distances us, reducing them to mere figures in a virtual game, void of connection. In this episode, we explore what it means to truly see and honor the people we cross paths with, from a place of compassion and openness. Life is about connection. We came here to connect with people and all of nature. So if connection is what we truly crave it is time to start treating people as individuals who we can connect with in beautiful ways to open to the vastness of unique beings who all came to share something quite unique when they chose to be incarnated into this lifetime. Meeting people outside of the labels we give them creates a more enriching life for all of us.Join Renee and Sandra Ingerman as they reflect on this powerful topic!
Andrew was ecstatic to have this firecracker of a guest in the Pritchett Brothers studio for this episode of Mind Yo Business – Natalie Holden. Born in Evansville and raised in Bloomington, Natalie grew up in a “red-headed raucous” of a family! Her words. Growing up, she was surrounded by work ethic. With a stay-at-home mom who managed a home and an entrepreneurial dad who, quite literally, taught the kids how to network during family vacations – it's no wonder Natalie turned into the woman she is today! The conversation travels from post-high school husband hunting, to selling Mary Kay in Idaho and navigates to her journey to health through running! Natalie tells her story and weaves in lessons she has learned over the years about meeting people, understanding what people need, reaching your goals through determination, and how to overcome struggles you inevitably face. She gives her younger self some advice that all overthinkers need to hear – “simmerdown” We wrap up the episode hearing how Natalie got to the position she holds today in hospice care. Natalie has so much experience and wisdom to share and this conversation is filled with golden nuggets you don't want to miss! Read our new book, The Score That Matters - https://amzn.to/3w5K0FW Full show notes at www.LearningLeader.com The 5 Journal Prompts - What am I grateful for? Where am I winning? What will I let go of today? What does my ideal day look like? What needs to be said at the end? Avoid the old person flaw – Sometimes you meet an old person and they spend hours in conversation living in the past. Don't ever believe that your best days are behind you. Have a “never peak” mindset with an upward trajectory… Always. Go see people in person - In Italy they say, “We are not friends until we've eaten together.” Release the energy vampires – “We feel guilt when we no longer want to associate with old friends and colleagues who haven't changed. The price, and marker, of growth.” - Naval Ravikant Stop salting your food before you taste it. Happiness is an inside job. See Solitude as the new status symbol. A sweaty workout is never a silly idea. Ask Yourself the 10,000 Dinner Question: That's how many dinners you can expect to share with your chosen mate. Does that thought thrill you, or give you the shivers? If the latter, you may not have found the one. Be a Perfect Moment Maker: Focus on making magical memories with those we care about so we feel rich when we're old. Never be a prisoner of your past. Become the architect of your future. You will never be the same. “Your "I CAN" is more important than your IQ.” “Everything is created twice, first in the mind and then in reality.” “You can't make someone feel good about themselves until you feel good about yourself.” “Investing in yourself is the best investment you will ever make. it will not only improve your life, it will improve the lives of all those around you.” Start a mastermind alliance… For years, every Friday at 6am, Robin met with his mastermind partner at a coffee shop where they'd chat for 2 hours. “Success occurs in the privacy of the soul.” - Rick Rubin – Success is about YOUR definition, not whatever society says it should be. It's about understanding your purpose, your values, and the critical behaviors to match those values. The cool part about it, is you get to define it. That isn't easy work, but it's worth it. Ski instructors aren't rich, “but we have a rich life.”

In this episode, Joe interviews Ayize Jama-Everett: author; educator; filmmaker; and therapist with a long history of work in substance use and mental health services. When Jama-Everett was last on the show, “A Table of Our Own” – a film focusing on healing, psychedelics, and bonds within the Black community – was still in its infancy. It's now complete, and he and others behind the film are touring with it, with showings coming up in Detroit, LA, and Boston. A free follow-up discussion hosted by CIIS' Center for Psychedelic Therapies and Research is happening Feb. 15, and, from February 15-16 only, the film is available to rent online. He gives his full origin story: growing up around substance use, how he got into therapy and healing people through journeys, how “A Table of Our Own” came about, and how it was influenced by mushrooms. Then he discusses a lot more, with a much-needed critical eye: His experiences with some notorious bad actors in the facilitation space Decriminalization and how we celebrate small wins while ignoring steps back Drug exceptionalism, the Drug War, and the demonization of crack Power dynamics and the dangerous concept of letting go Why the Black community is so skeptical of psychedelics And he talks about why it's so important to meet people where they are – that what works for one person or one community won't necessarily work for another, and the above-ground, corporatized, overly medicalized model will never work for everyone.
