The past decades have seen a steady erosion of Democratic support from what used to be core voters: blue collar workers in factory towns. There are many reasons for this, and to explain what's happened and how to fix it, I've invited Mike Lux, founder of American Family Voices on to discuss. Mike is a writer and thought leader, and as the co-founder of Democracy Partners, one of the most influential voices in progressive politics in the United States. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/alyssa-milano-sorry-not-sorry/message

It's easy to be down on the Democrats right now. I'm constantly invoking that old adage about Democrats always "snatching defeat from the jaws of victory." I can't help it, it's just their track record. But I got a bit of an awakening in the form of an email on a list I subscribe to, filled with real progressives from a cross-section of backgrounds. The author of that message is Mike Lux, and I invited him to join us today to give us a different perspective on how the party works (or doesn't), from the point of view of a progressive working in the trenches. So, today' we'll begin with Mike Lux, and I hope you'll listen with an open mind. After all, consider the alternative to being a Democrat in the US today. It's not an option.
Handicapping and mobilizing for the midterms after a tough summer.
Today is Day 48 of the Biden administration, and we're one day closer to a bit of relief. The House today passed the Senate's revised version of the American Rescue Plan Act. Next it goes to the White House for President Biden's signature. Tomorrow night, he begins the process of explaining what's in it to the American people! I think this is the perfect time to take stock of where we are, and look at Biden's first 48 days in office through a progressive lens. How's he doing? I'll ask Mike Lux, a real progressive Democrat who's worked within the Democratic Party for decades. We'll take an honest look at his performance so far. Then, because it's been too long, we'll finish the show with a visit from Julianna Forlano of act.tv
As Joe Biden begins naming his staff and cabinet picks, some of us are left wondering whether that elusive Democratic Party unity is even possible in this era. Mike Lux, the (progressive) Politics Guy, joins me today to talk about the subject. We'll start with the latest news and info. And a personal memory or three, as my life changed dramatically twenty years ago today!

This week we are one year away from the election where Donald Trump will be seeking four more years in power. He'll be the first incumbent running for reelection after having been impeached –unless the Senate votes to remove him from office. Elie Mystal analyzes what it would take for that to happen. Also: Joe Biden may be the frontrunner, but he's slipping, and big donors are pulling away from him. But do the so-called “moderates” in the party–-the Wall Street Democrats--have a Plan B? Jeet Heer will evaluate the possibilities—there are a lot of them, but none are very promising. Plus: Left politics can win in New York City and L.A. and San Francisco but what about Iowa and Ohio? Mike Lux says ‘Left Politics Can Win All Over the Country' –he's a longtime strategist for the progressive movement and Democratic candidates. And finally: Amy Wilentz reports on the recent street protests in Haiti, one of those countries about which Trump has made those disparaging remarks.
Mike Lux is producing videos under the moniker of "The Politics Guy" these days. Mike has been a force in progressive politics for four decades as a strategist and presidential advisor. He joins us today to weigh in as a champion of progressive candidates and causes on the first night of the first Democratic debates of the 2020 presidential elections, and about the final rulings handed down this morning by the Supreme Court. Needless to say, there's a lot to talk about!
Mike Lux joins The Great Battlefield to share the insights he's gathered in his forty year political career; he discusses serving in the Clinton White House, the roles he's played in the formation of several major progressive organizations, and the work he's currently doing with his firm, Mike Lux Media. He also gives us highlights from his new book, How To Democrat in The Age of Trump. | Episode 210

We also speak with Indivisible leaders in Massachusetts and Florida about the surprise wins of Ayanna Pressley and Andrew Gillum in their states respectively, about the roles each group played, and about the ascendancy of progressive politics nationally. Left politics can win all over the country, not just in New York City and Chicago and LA – that's what Mike Lux says, he's a longtime strategist for the progressive movement and Democratic candidates, and his new book is “How to Democrat in the Age of Trump.” Katha Pollitt is not happy with leftists calling Trump a “fascist” – maybe there's a better term for his attacks on democracy, which have a lot in common with authoritarian leaders in Russia, Turkey, Egypt, Hungary, Poland, and other places. The foundation for all of them: austerity, pushed by the big banks and right-wing parties, which creates the economic anxiety that fuels racism and anti-immigrant sentiment.

Aired 05/05/09 One of Ronald Reagan's most famous and successful quotes is from his 1980 debate with Jimmy Carter, "There you go again..." No one can remember what it was about or whether it was accurate, but it worked. I bring it up because a new book makes clear that that same line applies all too well to the right in this country. "There you go again..." - bringing up the same old stereotypes, same old fears, same old prejudices... Today's first guest MIKE LUX has a new book out -- THE PROGRESSIVE REVOLUTION: How the Best in America Came to Be -- in which he traces the role progressives have played in leading the US to so many of its best advances, battling every time the right's determination to keep progress at bay. Needless to say, we are at another of those moments today. After 30 years of dominance by the right, disaster is clear to all, and change is on the move. We'll talk about the history, the present moment, and what we all need to do to keep moving forward to a more progressive future. www.theprogressiverevolution.com www.anewwayforward.org
